A great group gets even better – thanks to some heavenly production from the legendary Ed Motta! Ed's an artist that we love tremendously for his own work – particularly the recent groundbreaking sides on the Trama label – but here he's working in the studio in support of Jazzinho, giving their already-great groove an added touch of warmth, soul, and imagination! As on their debut, Jazzinho work strongly in a jazzy 70s territory – hitting the best notes of Brazilian fusion from that time, and coming off with an especially soulful sound on the vocals – which are mostly backed up by live combo instrumentation. Ed's participation here runs past even his control of the studio board, as he sings a bit, arranges some, and also plays guitar and percussion – really acting as a special extra member of the group for this set! A very cool take on the music of Thelonious Monk – a set that's far more abstract and offbeat than any of Monk's original recordings – but in a way that the composer might have appreciated, had he lived until the 21st Century! Mast clearly really loves these tunes, and knows them inside and out – and he splits them down the middle and feels free to take them in any way he wants – sometimes angular jazz, sometimes, much more freewheeling and electronic – but almost always with some acoustic instrumentation at play. Musicians include Gavin Templeton on alto and baritone, Jonah Levine on trombone, and Dan Rosenboom on trumpet – and Tim Conley handles guitar, bass, keyboards, and rhythms. Dang, these guys have really come a long way since their last album – into territory that's even more soulfully uplifting! Jazzin Park work very strongly in that upbeat, all-soul mode that we loved in some of our favorite Japanese artists from years back – that positive groove we remember from the early years of Monday Michiru – carried beautifully here into the 21st Century by the Jazzin Park duo, with help from guests who include Heather Johnson, Emi Tawata, Ryohei, and others. Most tracks have English lyrics, and instrumentation is a great mix of keyboards and acoustic elements – in grooves that are usually midtempo, but with a few more house-based moments – on titles that include "Free To Believe", "Dold Inside", "Brand New Day", "New Sun", "11 AM", "Shatterlove", "Long Way", "Joy", and "Your Love Has Freed Me". The vibe here is a lot more Strata and spiritual than the style you'd expect from Jazzanova – as they take on tunes by label legends like Lyman Woodard, Kenny Cox, Sam Sanders, Maulawi, and other talents from the same Motor City underground of the 70s that gave the world Tribe Records. Instrumentation is a blend of Fender Rhodes and lots of live jazz work on flute, tenor, trombone, and trumpet – sometimes topped with vocals from Sean Haefeli, who really helps open up the soulful side of the tunes! Wonderful throughout, better than we might have even guessed – with titles that include "Joy Road", "Face At My Window", "Ortotundes", "Loser", "Scorpio's Child", "Creative Musicians", "Lost My Love", "Inside Ourselves", and "Saturday Night Special".
