VariousFreedom Jazz Dance – Book 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy ... $11.99
The sound of jazz in the 21st Century – a bold new wave of acosutic expression and soulful improvisation – served up here in an amazing assortment that features a few previously unreleased tunes! As with other volumes in this Schema series, the focus here is on the strong return to acoustic jazz on the dancefloor – served up mostly by European combos who are steeped in the traditions of 50s hardbop and 60s soul jazz. A few titles here are of older vintage, but most numbers are recent ones – either pulled from pricey import singles, or from previously unreleased tapes by the artists. Unreleased titles include "Jitterbug" by Gerardo Frisina, "Anisia" by Luis Ferri, "Revealed" by Soulstance, "Shades Of Blue" by Quintetto Lo Greco, and "A Handful Of Soul" by Marco Biondi & High Five Quintet – and other tracks include "African Rumble" by Timo Lassey, "Versilian Samba (Five Corners Quintet version)" by Sunaga T Experience, "Conversation (Nicola Conte new jazz club mix)" by High Five Quintet, "Invitation" by Kenny Clarke Francy Boland Sextet, "Bohemia After Dark" by Sahib Shihab, and "Freedom Jaz Dance" by Fez Combo. Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". ✨✧ Kirk Degiorgio Presents As One21st Century Soul ... LP
Ubiquity, 2001. Sealed 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Spacey beats, funky keyboards, and a clear vision for the future – all coming from the hands of Kirk DeGiorgio, one of the most important producer/musicians to come out of the London scene of the past decade! This Ubiquity full length goes way past most of Kirk's recent singles and remix efforts – to a level of expression that few groups can match, save perhaps 4Hero – blending a rich tradition of space jazz funk, with broken beats and the occasional soulful vocal, into a seamless wall of sound that shifts, shimmers, and delights throughout! Titles include "Like No Other", "Another Revolution", "Problems", "Music Is An Open Sky", "Amalia", "In The Arms Of You", "Undefeated" and "Contours". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fingers IncAnother Side ... LP
Jack Trax (UK), 1988. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful full length set from Fingers Inc – one of the more important groups on the Chicago house underground of the 80s – and maybe one of the most fully developed, too! The set shows that keyboardist Larry Heard and crew really had a lot more to offer than just standard house music – as the record's a treasure trove of 80s soul – with a mix of dancefloor groovers, midtempo burners, and heavy house cuts all laid out wonderfully over the double-length set – really developing the Fingers sound, but showing a sense of soul that didn't always come through on their more cosmic 12" single records. Both Robert Owens and Ron Wilson sing on the record – and the vibe is maybe a bit like that moment when Blaze stepped into soul music on their 25 Years Later set for Motown. Titles include "Mystery Friend", "So Glad", "Shadows", "Can You Feel It", "A Path", and "Bring Down The Walls". (Soul, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Marc MacInvisible Soldiers ... LP
Omniverse (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $19.99
One of those great little mixtape projects from the mighty Marc Mac – a set that mixes together his own beats and keyboards with a range of spoken passages taken from a history of Civil Rights and political activism! The set's not the first time that Marc's done this sort of thing, but we're still amazed at the way he manages to bring together snippets of the past and give them new relevance with his own music – maybe in part because some of these issues are maybe more important today than ever! Titles include "Dying For The Cause", "Black Buffalo", "Justifiable Reasons", "This New World", "Tuskegee Symphony", "Shells Like Rain", and "A Grateful Nation". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nostalgia 77Songs For My Funeral ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great batch of slow building funk and hypnotic mood music from Nostalgia 77 – and another gift from future funk generators at Tru Thoughts Records! Nostalgia 77 takes the sort of inward, not necessarily downtempo, but definitely more cerebral tack of later work by DJ Shadow and others to a deeper level. The programmed funky drums, spare hip hop scratches and samples, and, perhaps most importantly, a hugely melodious jazz and sparely trippy psychedelic influences really make for a unique vibe here! This is one of the finest DJ-based albums we've heard in a good little while! Tracks include "Processional", "The Conventicle", "Rain Walk", "Only Hush", "Metamorphosis", "The Mirror", "The Gates Pts 1 & 2", "Dirge" and more. CD

Trax, 1988. Very Good- ... $19.99
3 tracks from one of the most important acid house acts of the Chicago scene! Phuture were the brainchild of DJ Pierre – and they had a complicated mix of beats and electronics that predated the Detroit Techno sound for a few years, and was touched with all the darkness of the best Chicago work on Trax. (Soul, New Grooves) 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Red label pressing. A-side label has a small sticker and initials in marker.)

Tom & JoyAntigua ... CD
Yellow/Tommy Boy, 2005. Used ... $4.99
Bossa via Paris – and a wonderfully dreamy set from the team of Tom & Joy! Joy is actually Joyce Hoze Liwer, a beautiful vocalist whose approach to the lyrics not only recalls some of the bossa greats of earlier years, but who also manages to stretch them out with a more sophisticated sort of singer-songwriter approach. And Tom is Thomas Naim, guitarist on the record, and an arranger with a wonderful feel for a variety of different larger backdrops – one that takes Joy's vocals through classic bossa, soulful fusion, and even a bit of Afro Funk on the set! The pair have really expanded their sound from the days when they used to record under the name of Tom & Joyce – and the record's got a playful depth that's even more important, given that it's their first US release. Titles include "Antigua", "Souls Tes Ailes", "Be Mine", "Esquisse", "Broadway", "Lluvia", "Kadia", "Out Of My Mind", and "Imagina". CD

✨✧ VariousNew Chapter – Idyllic Records Compilation ... CD
Idyllic (Germany), 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
A key moment in the Japanese scene – the "new chapter" from the scene that was really turning out some great music for the global underground! The collection features work from Nobukazu Takemura's Idyllic label – a groundbreaking imprint that moved beyond simple dancefloor tracks to embrace a range of different sounds and styles – bits of bossa, dub, and more – all performed with a sense of creativity and freshness that still holds up quite strongly today! This music turned a whole generation onto the importance of sounds from Japan – and it still holds up wonderfully all these many years later – almost the best work ever recorded by all the artists involved. Titles include "For Tomorrow (Childlike mix)" by Nobukazu Takemura, "Midori No Umi" and "Pupa (Kool Jazz Productions rmx)" by Silent Poets, "After All Those Years" and "Day Dream" by Natural Calamity, "Kick Back" and "Moment Scale (rmx)" by Silent Poets, "Idyllic"by Spiritual Vibes, and "Meaning In The Tone (95 Space & Oriental)" by Silent Poets. VariousOff The Shelf – A Selection Of Tracks From Far Out & Solaria Singles Archive ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2002. Used ... $5.99
Great work from one of the most important labels of the past few years – the groundbreaking Far Out imprint, known for its unique style of blending Brazilian and London grooves! The set features tracks from Far Out's oft-deleted singles series – hard to find 12" releases that often get only short release, and disappear much more quickly than the rest of the label's catalog. If you've missed some of these gems, or if you're like us, and sometimes prefer to put on a full album and save yourself flipping wax, the set's a great way to catch up – and probably introduce yourself to loads of great new music. Titles include "Khameleon" and "Second Future" by Difusion, "Ponteio" by Da Lata, "Colours" by Big Bang, "Smile" by Nature's Plan, "Strike Hard" by Trouble Man, "Brazil (Brazilian reprise)" by Democustico, "Faca De Conta (Roni Size rmx)" by Azymuth, "E Ruim/The Samba (4 Hero rmx)" by Grupo Batuque, and "Banzo Theme" by Banzo. VariousSweet House Chicago – A Mickey Oliver Production ... CD
M Records/Still Music, 1986. New Copy ... $12.99
A classic compilation from the Chicago scene – one that stood as one of the key full-length releases of house music that was bubbling under in the Windy City – important at the time, as most other albums of house music were from overseas labels issuing Chicago recordings! As you'd guess from the title, Mickey Oliver's at the helm throughout – producing the work with a nicely soulful quality – one that takes things a bit past some of the starker, colder modes that sometimes showed up on Trax Records – and which really illustrates that great second chapter as Chicago house was maturing a bit. The beats are nice and crispy throughout, the keyboards get cool and moody – and titles include "I Can't Stop For You" by Pierre's Fantasy Club, "Take It To The Top" by Joe Magic, "House Rights" by Phortune, "Suavesito" by Ralphi Rosario, "I Want Your Love" by Jamie, "Lost Me Boy" by Mickey Oliver with Dari Mor, and "Anticipate" and "I Need A Beat" by Mickey Oliver. CD featuers bonus tracks – "Anticipate (12" rmx)" by Mickey Oliver and "I Need A Beat (12" mix)" by Ralph Rosario. (Soul, New Grooves) CD

VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD
