✨✧ Ronny JordanQuiet Revolution ... CD
Island (Canada), 1993. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent early album by funky guitarist Ronny Jordan! Back when everyone seemed to have lost their groove, Ronny emerged with a strong single-note style that reminded us a heck of a lot of Grant Green or Melvin Sparks. This record features some great backings behind Ronnie's guitar, arranged by either him, Ray Hayden, or Guru. Includes the cut "The Jackal", with cool hipster poetry by Dana Bryant – plus "In Full Swing", "Come With Me", "Midnight Lady", "Mr Walker", "Slam In A Jam", and "Under Your Spell". Import version – and tough to find! CD

VariousFreedom Jazz Dance – Book 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2006. New Copy ... $11.99
The sound of jazz in the 21st Century – a bold new wave of acosutic expression and soulful improvisation – served up here in an amazing assortment that features a few previously unreleased tunes! As with other volumes in this Schema series, the focus here is on the strong return to acoustic jazz on the dancefloor – served up mostly by European combos who are steeped in the traditions of 50s hardbop and 60s soul jazz. A few titles here are of older vintage, but most numbers are recent ones – either pulled from pricey import singles, or from previously unreleased tapes by the artists. Unreleased titles include "Jitterbug" by Gerardo Frisina, "Anisia" by Luis Ferri, "Revealed" by Soulstance, "Shades Of Blue" by Quintetto Lo Greco, and "A Handful Of Soul" by Marco Biondi & High Five Quintet – and other tracks include "African Rumble" by Timo Lassey, "Versilian Samba (Five Corners Quintet version)" by Sunaga T Experience, "Conversation (Nicola Conte new jazz club mix)" by High Five Quintet, "Invitation" by Kenny Clarke Francy Boland Sextet, "Bohemia After Dark" by Sahib Shihab, and "Freedom Jaz Dance" by Fez Combo. Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Kirk Degiorgio Presents As One21st Century Soul ... LP
Ubiquity, 2001. Sealed 2LP ... $9.99
Spacey beats, funky keyboards, and a clear vision for the future – all coming from the hands of Kirk DeGiorgio, one of the most important producer/musicians to come out of the London scene of the past decade! This Ubiquity full length goes way past most of Kirk's recent singles and remix efforts – to a level of expression that few groups can match, save perhaps 4Hero – blending a rich tradition of space jazz funk, with broken beats and the occasional soulful vocal, into a seamless wall of sound that shifts, shimmers, and delights throughout! Titles include "Like No Other", "Another Revolution", "Problems", "Music Is An Open Sky", "Amalia", "In The Arms Of You", "Undefeated" and "Contours". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Masters At Work & OthersHouse Masters – Masters At Work Vol 2 (4CD set) ... CD
Defected (UK), 1990s/2000s. Used 4 CDs ... $17.99
The title definitely gets it right – as the team of Kenny Dope and Louie Vega are certainly masters of house – as you'll hear in this overstuffed 4CD set! The package brings together 40 tracks that really span the gamut of the duo's genius – from their important early house records, their crucial remixes of tracks for others, and their groundbreaking work during their second chapter – when the Masters At Work name helped bridge a space between older funk and soul, and the freshest sounds of the 21st Century! There's a huge amount here to love – and titles include "I Like (MAW main mix)" by Shanice, "Our Time Is Coming" by MAW with Roy Ayers, "Buddy X (Masters At Work dub 1)" by Nenah Cherry, "Always There (MAW main mix)" by Incognito with Jocelyn Brown, "I Feel Love (Masters At Work 86th Street mix)" by Donna Summer, "When You Touch Me (MAW re-edit)" by Taana Gardner, "You Can Do It (Nuyorican style mix)" by Nuyorican Soul with George Benson, "Star Chasers (Nu Yorican dub)" by 4Hero, "Let It Go (Ken Lou mix)" by Black Magic, "Ten Percent (Ken Lou mix)" by Double Exposure, "See Line Woman (MAW rmx)" by Nina Simone, "Truth Don Die (Masters At Work house version main)" by Femi Kuti, and lots lots more! Tom & JoyAntigua ... CD
Yellow/Tommy Boy, 2005. Used ... $6.99
Bossa via Paris – and a wonderfully dreamy set from the team of Tom & Joy! Joy is actually Joyce Hoze Liwer, a beautiful vocalist whose approach to the lyrics not only recalls some of the bossa greats of earlier years, but who also manages to stretch them out with a more sophisticated sort of singer-songwriter approach. And Tom is Thomas Naim, guitarist on the record, and an arranger with a wonderful feel for a variety of different larger backdrops – one that takes Joy's vocals through classic bossa, soulful fusion, and even a bit of Afro Funk on the set! The pair have really expanded their sound from the days when they used to record under the name of Tom & Joyce – and the record's got a playful depth that's even more important, given that it's their first US release. Titles include "Antigua", "Souls Tes Ailes", "Be Mine", "Esquisse", "Broadway", "Lluvia", "Kadia", "Out Of My Mind", and "Imagina". CD

VariousSweet House Chicago – A Mickey Oliver Production ... CD
M Records/Still Music, 1986. New Copy ... $12.99
A classic compilation from the Chicago scene – one that stood as one of the key full-length releases of house music that was bubbling under in the Windy City – important at the time, as most other albums of house music were from overseas labels issuing Chicago recordings! As you'd guess from the title, Mickey Oliver's at the helm throughout – producing the work with a nicely soulful quality – one that takes things a bit past some of the starker, colder modes that sometimes showed up on Trax Records – and which really illustrates that great second chapter as Chicago house was maturing a bit. The beats are nice and crispy throughout, the keyboards get cool and moody – and titles include "I Can't Stop For You" by Pierre's Fantasy Club, "Take It To The Top" by Joe Magic, "House Rights" by Phortune, "Suavesito" by Ralphi Rosario, "I Want Your Love" by Jamie, "Lost Me Boy" by Mickey Oliver with Dari Mor, and "Anticipate" and "I Need A Beat" by Mickey Oliver. CD featuers bonus tracks – "Anticipate (12" rmx)" by Mickey Oliver and "I Need A Beat (12" mix)" by Ralph Rosario. (Soul, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Vikter DuplaixSingles – Prelude To The Future ... CD
K7, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer collection of work from Vikter Duplaix – the man who's been on more records recently than anyone else we can think of! Vikter's only dropped one full album to date, but alongside that great record, he's also shown up on dozens of singles, working with some of the best artists of the jazzy soul underground! This set does a great job of bringing together the best of those far-reaching appearances – offering up 10 singles, most of them formerly pricey imports, and some of them even now out of print! Titles include "Manhood (Vikter's IML mix)", "Messages (Critical Point feat Vikter Duplaix & Wadud)", "I'll Do It For You (Sylk 130 feat Vikter Duplaix)", "Galaxy (unreleased version)", "That Night (Jazzanova with Vikter Duplaix rmx)", "Manhood (original)", "City Spirits (original)", "Messages (unreleased version)", "Soon (Jazzanoval with Vikter Duplaix)", and "Sensuality (original)". ✨✧ Lack Of AfroThis Time ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2011. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bold step forward from Lack Of Afro – the modern funk & soul vehicle of producer, DJ and song stylist Adam Gibbons! The slew of singles and trio of full lengths that we'd heard prior to This Time have all been really impressive – a mix of breakbeat funk era and classic inspiration – fleshed out brilliantly with great players. This one reaches farther and sinks deeper with a more stylistically diverse set of sounds and one strong song after another – with elements of uptempo 60s soul, 70s cinematic funk, Afrobeat, jazz funk and funky hip hop – an eclectic stew that's tasty as can be! Guests include guitarist Eddie Roberts, Wax & Herbal T, Jake Morely, Angeline Morrison and excellent studio players. Gibbons provides beats, programming, synth, bass, Rhodes and more backed by vocalists, horns, guitars and more depending on the needs of the cut. Includes "Holding My Breath" feat Jake Morley, "A Time For" feat Wayne Gidden, "Fool" feat Angeline Morrison, "Contusions", "Little Fugue", "One For Bielski", "The Importance of Elsewhere"f eat Angeline Morrison and "Lazy Lazarus". ✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD
