✨✧ VariousRed Hot & Rio ... CD
Verve/Red Hot, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
An early volume in the Red Hot series of benefit compilations, with a Brazilian theme, and as with others in the series, a broad range of artists, often pairing new with old. 21 tracks in all, some with only the most tenuous connection to Brazilian music, but others a brilliant fusion of new sounds with old, including Everything But The Girl "Corcovado", Maxwell "Seguranca", Cesaria Evora, Caetano Veloso & Ryuchi Sakamoto "E Preciso Perdoar", Incognito with Omar & Anna Caram "Water To Drink", Milton Nascimento "Dancing", Stereolab & Herbie Mann "One Note Samba/Surfboard", Funk'N Lata "Sambadrome", Gilberto Gil "Refazenda" and Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo", plus a dozen more! ✨✧ Bebel GilbertoBebel Gilberto ... CD
Ziriguiboom/Six Degrees, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bebel's second album for Six Degrees – and quite possibly an even better album than the first! Not one to rest on the laurels of her success of recent years, Bebel seems to diverge a bit from the sound of her initial hit – going for a deeper approach to songwriting, and a musical style that shows she's got a lot more to offer than just bossa remix-styled vocals! The album kicks off with a wonderful take on Os Mutantes' English reading of the Tropicalia classic "Baby" – then rolls into a sweetly laidback set of tracks that borrow a lot from the bossa, but which also have some extremely personal songwriting touches. Overall, there's less beats and more natural instrumentation than before – and the album feautres guest work by Joao Donato and Carlinhos Brown, as well as some great use of strings! Titles include "Winter", "O Caminho", "Ceu Distante", "Next To You", "All Around", "River Song", "Every Day You've Been Away", and "Simplesmente". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Bebel GilbertoAll In One ... CD
Verve, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lovely work from Bebel Gilberto – her debut for Verve – which in a way, brings her home, given that Verve released so many great records in the 60s from Brazilian artists with boundary skirting appeal! Bebel's work has never lacked warmth, but she's bringing even more of it to this set, with less clubby textures, and more of a timeless blend of voice, strings and percussion. Even the tunes produced or co-produced by John King of the Dust Brothers and Mark Ronson are steeped in a real love of classic bossa soul, just done with a nice modern groove, with some subtle programming. Carlinhos Brown's percussion is kind of the secret sauce here, but there's no overshadowing Bebel's lovely, wonderful vocals – and the covers are very well chosen. A little less than half the songs are sung in English, and titles include "Cancao De Amor", Bob Marley's "Sun Is Shining", Stevie Wonder's "The Real Thing", "Ela", "Far From The Sea", "All In One" and more. ✨✧ Bebel GilbertoMomento ... CD
Ziriguiboom/Six Degrees, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bebel Gilberto's certainly one to keep her public waiting in the space between each new record – but she always makes the wait worthwhile by coming up with something new! The sound here is again something different than her previous two albums – somewhat electric, but also fairly acoustic as well – even more mature than before, and not as easily given to simple tricks or flourishes – which is a very good thing in our book! One track was done in collaboration with Kassin, with backings by Orquestra Imperial – and other titles feature contributions from Sabina Sciubba, Didi Gutman, Masa Shimizu, and Guy Sigsworth. Titles include "Tranquilo", "Night & Day", "Um Segundo", "Cade Voce", "Words", "Azul", and "Os Novos Yorkinos". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Bebel GilbertoTanto Tempo (Six Degrees pressing) ... CD
Ziriguiboom/Six Degrees, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
In a world of supposed crossover Brazilian projects that have mostly lost their roots, the music of Bebel Gilberto is surprisingly refreshing! This daughter of Joao Gilberto (not Astrud) sings in a manner that's in keeping with the classic bossa divas of years past – but she works here in adventurous collaborations with the likes of Thievery Corporation, Amon Tobin, Suba, and Smoke City, which makes for a mixture of styles that freshens up the bossa considerably. Titles include a remake of "So Nice (Summer Samba)", plus "Samba Da Bencao", "Lonely", "Tanto Tempo", "Bananeira", and "Sem Contencao". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ VariousVerve Remixed 2 ... CD
Verve, 1960s/2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic jazz for the 21st century – a treasure trove of tunes from Verve Records, all remixed for the modern dancefloor! The set's the second in Verve's Remixed series – and unlike the first, which focused mostly on vocal numbers, this one throws in some instrumental killers that are among some of our favorite in the catalog! The overall groove is much more expanded from the first session – way past the standard of floating vocals, keys, and beats – into a realm of abstract jazz that really gets at the heart of the project! 14 tracks in all – with "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie remixed by Funky Lowlives, "Here's That Rainy Day" by Astrud Gilberto remixed by Koop, "Naima's Love Song" by Betty Carter remixed by DJ Spinna, "Fried Neckbones & Some Home Fries" by Willie Bobo remixed by Dan The Automator, "Soul Sauce" by Cal Tjader remixed by Fila Brasillia, "Do What You Wanna" by Ramsey Lewis remixed by Mr Scruff, "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair" by Nina Simone remixed by Jaffa, "Mama" by Hugh Masekela remixed by Metro Area, "Whatever Lola Wants" by Sarah Vaughan remixed by Gotan Project, "Blues For Brother George Jackson" by Archie Shepp remixed by Mondo Grosso, and "Brother Where Are You" by Oscar Brown Jr remixed by Matthew Herbert. ✨✧ VariousVerve Remixed ... CD
Verve, 1960s/2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very groovy idea! This sparkling set takes older vocal jazz tunes from the Verve catalog, and uses the songs as the basis for new tracks by some of the better producers in the global groove underground. The mix of styles and eras is quite compelling – as torchy vocals drift over the top of cutting edge beats – creating a sound that's bound to get you digging through the crates for some of these singers, and reevaluating work from the past like never before! Titles include "Who Needs Forever" by Astrud Gilberto remixed by Thievery Corporation, "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday remixed by Tricky, "Hare Krishna" by Tony Scott remixed by King Britt, "See Line Woman" by Nina Simone remixed by Masters At Work, "Return To Paradise" by Shirley Horn remixed by Mark De Clive-Lowe, "Feelin Good" by Nina Simone remixed by Joe Claussell, "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby?" by Dinah Washington remixed by Rae & Christian, and "How Long Has This Been Going On" by Carmen McCrae remixed by MJ Cole. And don't miss the super-low priced Verve Unmixed CD! (Funky Compilations, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Nat King Cole & OthersRe:Generations ... CD
Capitol, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's been nearly 20 years since Natalie Cole first sang duets with her father through the magic of technology – so the time's long overdue to throw a host of other talents into the mix! The style here is a bit like the Verve Remixed albums – in that the record takes older classics by Nat from the 40s and 50s, and updates them strongly with contributions from a host of contemporary mixers and producers. However, there's also a key difference here in that the album also features a fair bit of extra vocals too – from Bebel Gilberto, Natalie Cole, Nas, The Roots, and Izza Kizza – all of whom help to make the album a bit more than the simple remix effort you might expect. Nat's own vocals are a bit buried in the mix at times, but that's no problem if you're eager to hear more from the younger generation – or re:generation, as the case may be! Titles include "Day In Day Out" with Cut Chemist, "Straighten Up & Fly Right" with Will I Am & Natalie Cole, "Lush Life" with Cee-Lo Green, "Walkin My Baby Back Home" with The Roots, "The Game Of Love" with Salaam Remi & Nas, "El Choclo" with Brazilian Girls, "Pick Up" with Just Blaze, "Nature Boy" with TV On The Radio, and "Anytime Anyday Anywhere" with Amp Fiddler. ✨✧ VariousFuture Lounge 03 ... CD
Stereo Deluxe (Germany), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful stuff! This is a sparkling collection of modern lounge material – compiled by the folks at Stereo Deluxe from a host of different labels, all put together with a perfect vibe that's sure to satisfy fans of the old stuff as much as the new. Although most of this music was created in the past few years, it's filled with oodles of older elements – like bubbling Hammond organ, sweet Fender Rhodes piano, washes of soulful strings, and touches of bossa beats. More than just a slap-dash licensing effort, this is a wickedly conceived set with a strong feel throughout. Includes "Return Of The Coconut Groove" by Trio Eletrico, "Dis Poem" by Mutabaruka, "2ter Tag" by Siedg Der Liebe, "Reincarnation" by Pablo, "Elevator" by Jaffa, "Papdam" by Yonderboi, "Stories" by Airfix, "Ambrosia" by A Reminiscent Drive, and "Maria Quiet" by Astrud Gilberto. 15 tracks in all! The Red Hot series returns to Rio – for a 2CD set with a pretty incredible roster – steeped in a love of Brazilian music and featuring many classic and contemporary Brazilian artists as well as international adventurers! It's filled with exciting collaborations: Beck & Seu Jorge, Alice Smith & Aloe Blacc, David Byrne & Caetano Veloso, Phenomenal Handclap Band & Marcos Valle, Marisa Monte with Devendra Banhart & Rodrigo Amarante and more great tracks by Bebel Giberto, Mia Doi Todd, Quadron and many more. ✨✧ VariousVerve Remixed 3 ... CD
Verve, 1960s/2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
The 3rd volume in the Verve Remixed series – a now-legendary approach to older jazz, and one that's set a whole new standard for the remix scene! As with previous volumes, this one takes a dip in the Universal back catalog – working with older tunes from the Verve, Mercury, and Philips labels – and bringing them nicely up to date with a variety of dancefloor touches. The groove here feels a bit more open than some of the previous volumes – not as much in the Starbucks-torchy mode, and handled with an ear for groovier and farther-reaching sounds. There's still plenty of singers on the set, but the overall sound seems to allow the remixers to get a bit of their own voice into the tunes a bit more. 13 tracks in all – and titles include "Little Girl Blue (Postal Service rmx)" by Nina Simone, "Come Dance With Me (Sugardaddy rmx)" by Shirley Horn, "Speak Low (Bent rmx)" by Billie Holiday, "Sing Sing Sing (RSL rmx)" by Anita O'Day, "Yesterdays (Junior Boys rmx)" by Billie Holiday, "Stay Loose (Lyrics Born rmx)" by Jimmy Smith, "Peter Gunn (Max Sedgley rmx)" by Sarah Vaughan, "Gentle Rain (RJD2 rmx)" by Astrud Gilberto, and "Just One Of Those Things (Brazilian Girls rmx)" by Blossom Dearie. (Funky Compilations, New Grooves) CD
