The set's almost a return to the warm soul territory that first won us over in Monday's work from the 90s – as she takes on a whole host of older American soul tunes by Stevie Wonder, Teena Marie, and others – sung with a wonderfully mature vocal approach, and set to jazzy backings that really help change things up – and make the record way more than just a simple set of cover versions! There's a great blend here – the instrumental depth that Monday's shown in recent recordings, and the straightforward soul of the early years – all handled with just the right production balance to make it come off perfectly. The group's first, with production courtesy the great Gary Katz, who's put a fine touch on many Steely Dan LPs. While we were a bit dismissive of this effort at the time, it's kind of become a bit of a watershed in retrospect, the high water mark for the American Acid Jazz scene, if a bit commercial, and definitely a nice portrait of the mid 90s NYC scene, with loads of great players from all over the spectrum. Ubiquity's first volume of tracks from some of best underground producers of the 90s – thirteen spooky turgid tracks from the likes of Q-Burns, DJ Wally & Swingsett, Molasses, Mumbles, The Sharpshooters, Bugs, and Cut Chemist. This stuff kicked a lot of these guys off, and it's still a good American counterpart to things like the Headz comp on MoWax. CD
