Crustation/Mood II SwingFlame (Mood II Swing Vocal Mix, Borderline Insanity Dub Mix) ... 12-inch
Melodies International, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Mood II Swing takes on This great groover from Crustation – serving up an especially nice mix on the vocal version – which has this nicely creepy vocal passage seeping out between more ubeat, uplifting house-oriented grooves! There's a great kick in the rhythm, and these really great keyboard blasts – and the energy still returns on the flipside, even though the bass is up a bit more for the dubby mix! 12-inch, Vinyl record

More beats than straight jazz, but pretty great overall – a set that really reminds us of that key 90s moment when real jazz instrumentation first started creeping into the work of beatmakers! Simon S is at the head of the project – handling most beats and instrumentation, often with a spare, soundscapey feel that really takes us back to the glorious early years of Mo Wax – or perhaps the initial glimmer of genius we heard from Kruder & Dorfmeister. There's a bit of guest vibes, sax, and flute at times – but most of the main jazzy bits are from keyboards and piano. Titles include "One For Joe", "Land", "Maybe", "Time For", "Bologna", "J Bounce", "CM Vibe", and "Thoughts Of You". CD

Acid Jazz/Hollywood, 1995. Used ... $4.99
Hard hitting funky 45 material – supposedly recorded by a "lost" funk group from the 70s, but actually the James Taylor Quartet playing under a different name! That little bit of name trickery doesn't stop the album from being a nice batch of funky jazz tracks, though – with lots of hard drums and nice organ solos in the lead, hitting hard like the best early work by the Taylor Quartet, but with a few nice 70s funk touches in the mix! Lots of nice tracks, including "Dream Waves", "On Or Off", "Green Screen", and "Smokin". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Massive AttackMezzanine (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin, 1998. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A heavier, darker prime era set from Massive Attack – and rightly remembered as a classic! The grooves are still really strong, but the trip hop pioneers are delving more deeply into a bass heavy dub trip with a deep, rumbling bottom running throughout the tracks and some distorted guitar and reverb drenched key and sample bits punctuating the cuts and moody vocals. Stunningly strong to this day – which is no mean feat given the rapid musical evolutions of the 90s onward! Includes "Angel", "Risingson", "Teardrop" (which features vocals by Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser), "Inertia Creeps", "Exchange", "Dissolved Girl", "Man Next Door", "Black Milk", "Mezzanine" and "Group Four". 2CD set features a 20th Anniversary mix of the record – and a bonus CD with a Mezzanine Mad Professor selection of mixes – all handled by Mad Professor, with titles that include "Metal Banshee (Mad Professor mix one)", "Teardrop (Mazaruni dub one)", "Group Four (security forces dub)", "Wire (leaping dub)", "Inertia Creeps (floating on dubwise)", "Angel (angel dust)", "Exchange (mountain steppers dub)", and "Risingson (setting sun dub two)".
