BeatchoroBeatchoro ... CD
Trama (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $9.99
A delightful collision of music old and new – as acoustic Brazilian choro comes into play with more booty-styled beats – in a blend that's surprisingly great on the best numbers in the set! The style is one that might sound a bit hokey on paper, but it comes off well – never too overdone, and with an energy that makes the whole record crackle with the feel of new discovery. A big part of the credit goes to DJ Marcelinho, who produced the whole thing – and manages to balance things out nicely without letting the R&B side of the record overwhelm the classic one. Titles include "Mandinga Beat", "Quero Paz", "Beat 6", "Coisa Linda", "Favela Beat", "Samba Bem", "Som Estereofonico", "Meu Beatchoro", and "Kissanga No Kalunga". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Deee-LiteWorld Clique ... LP
Elektra/Get On Down, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's never been a better bit of pop throwaway dancefloor fodder ever! Sure, these guys were blaring out of every cheap radio at the time, and it was just about impossible to walk into a shopping mall without hearing "Groove Is In The Heart" for about 5 years after the album came out – but to us, that was a great thing, and the record represents one of the high points in pop music of the past few decades. Thanks to some skillful sampling by Towa Tei, the group were grounded in a rich history of funk, house, disco, soul, and Brazilian influences – all of which they managed to blend with a postmodern perfection that other groups could only ever dream of! The big hits are certainly very familiar, but the whole album's a delight – and tracks include "Who Was That?", "Smile On", "Try Me On . . . I'm Very You", "World Clique", "ESP", and "Good Beat". ✨✧ Foreign ExchangeConnected (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Foreign Exchange, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Tracks include "Von Sees", "Raw Life", "Let's Move", "Nic's Groove", "Sincere", "Brave New World", "The Answer", "Come Around", "Happiness", "All That You Are" and more. Alessandro MagnaniniSomeway Still I Do (colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". (Limited edition double colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks!)

NicolayCity Lights Vol 2 – Shibuya ... CD
Hard Boiled, 2009. Used ... $4.99
Spacey soul soundscapes from Nicolay – another big step for the unpredictable, but always soulful beatmaker, producer, and artist – inspired by a consciousness awakening trip to Tokyo on Shibuya – City Lights Volume 2! When we were first tipped to Nicolay's sounds, it was from a soulful hip hop perspective, and he still carries that vibe, but the scope of colors he's composing with is broad – using them to craft material that's both intimate and hypnotic. Fresh beats, Rhodes, Moog, bass, strings and drums flavor the sound. Much of the material on this set is instrumental, but several tunes featuring lovely vocals by Carlitta Durand – with lyrics penned and vocal arrangements by frequent collaborator and Foreign Exchange partner Phonte Coleman. Titles include "Lose Your Way", "Saturday Night", "Wake Up In Another Life" and more with Carlitta Durand, "Shibuya Station", "Crossing", "Rain In Ueno Park", "A Ride Under The Neon Moon", "Bullet Train", "The Inner Garden", "Departure" and more. Frank Popp EnsembleTouch & Go ... CD
Unique (Germany), 2005. Used ... $4.99
A great set of jaunty groovers from the Frank Popp Ensemble – a group who always manage to tap into an older mod and Northern Soul-influenced vein, yet come up with a sound that's cracklingly fresh! As with the other Popp releases, this set's got a really playful feel – not really kitschy, but unabashedly groovy – and topped off with plenty of female vocals to emphasize the catchy hooks of the tunes. There's plenty of Hammond grooving in alongside the snapping beats and driving guitars of the tunes – and the album could well be another big crossover hit for the ensemble! Titles include "All I Need", "Enough", "Touch & Gio", "Getting Down", "Business & Pleasure", "Leave Me Alone", "Just Say Goodbye", "Getting Down", "Fonce Danse Le Coeur", and "The World Is Waiting". RuralsTenth Chapter ... CD
Peng (UK), 2007. Used ... $5.99
Hard to believe these guys have got 10 albums under their belt – but over the past decade or so, The Rurals have been quietly building up a heck of a great catalog of grooves – and this album's the latest chapter in their triumphant story! The Rurals have never gotten the acclaim or attention of some of the bigger acts on the international groove scene – but their music is wonderful, and some of the most soulful dancefloor work around – a beautiful blend of beats, keys, and soul – all served up with a lot more warmth and depth than most of their contemporaries! Vocals are by the lovely Marie Tweek, and Charlie Hearnshaw plays some great sax on a few cuts – and titles include "Show Me The Love", "Steps", "Saving Time", "Rain", "7th Sun", "So High", "I'm Lost", and "Liquid". ✨✧ VariousMad Mats Presents Digging Beyond The Crates ... CD
BBE (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mad Mats is not only digging beyond the crates here, he's also digging beyond any conventional expectations you might have – as the set's got a unique vibe that may well make it one of the most compelling BBE compilations in years! The music is from the late 60s through the present – but it all comes together in a very future-sounding way – with rhythms that are often offbeat, electric elements that seem to crackle with independent energy, and vocals that can fall down in the mix one minute and burst forth the next! This isn't a dance music compilation, and it's also not a set of rare funk tracks either – and instead, Mats creates his own very personal journey in sound – heedless of time periods, genres, and often national boundaries. Titles include "Take A Stand" by Psalms, "Big Big Boss" by Johnny Moore, "Badly" by Cuthead, "Sherriff (Murlo rmx)" by Gappy Ranks, "Keep The Music Alive" by Yvonne Gray, "Evil Woman" by Bobby Hebb, "Jazz In Outer Space" by BSTC, "The Traveller" by Deft, "Space Based" by Mode M, "Don't Hold Back The Feeling (key trip dub)" by U N I, "Animations" by Intimate Disco, and "Jah I See You" by Ensemble Entendu.
