✨✧ BucketheadsAll In The Mind ... CD
Henry Street/Big Beat, 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from the young Kenny Dope – one of his first big-name projects of the 90s, and a great showcase for his already-mature approach to a groove! There's echoes here of the indie east coast club scene of a few years before – some of the soul of New Jersey, and the playful pastiche of Todd Terry and others – yet Kenny also takes things even farther, really hitting that warm, soulful synthesis of elements that made his Masters At Work productions so unique – way more than just the sum of their parts, as you'll hear here! The record has a few famous samples that stand out nicely – and titles include "Whew", "Sayin Dope", "Got Myself Together", "Time & Space", "Just Plain Funky", "You're A Runway", and "The Bomb". CD
(Out of print. Booklet has a gold promotional stamp on the cover.)

Deee-LiteWorld Clique ... LP
Elektra/Get On Down, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
There's never been a better bit of pop throwaway dancefloor fodder ever! Sure, these guys were blaring out of every cheap radio at the time, and it was just about impossible to walk into a shopping mall without hearing "Groove Is In The Heart" for about 5 years after the album came out – but to us, that was a great thing, and the record represents one of the high points in pop music of the past few decades. Thanks to some skillful sampling by Towa Tei, the group were grounded in a rich history of funk, house, disco, soul, and Brazilian influences – all of which they managed to blend with a postmodern perfection that other groups could only ever dream of! The big hits are certainly very familiar, but the whole album's a delight – and tracks include "Who Was That?", "Smile On", "Try Me On . . . I'm Very You", "World Clique", "ESP", and "Good Beat". ✨✧ Prefuse 73Sacrifices ... CD
Lex, 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Prefuse 73 doing his distinctive thing – mood-setting, hypnotic beats that roll from raw and deconstructionist to big and boisterous – with plenty off off-kilter melodic touches between! The range from stripped down and mellow to dense and rollicking is impressive as always, and his way of putting such signature stamp on the craft of abstract electronics an spacey hip hop beatcraft is impressive ever. There's coolly layered vocals too that give it a lot of atmosphere. Titles include "Late To The Party", ""Gravure", "The World Is Bigger", "We Lost Our Beat Tape In Mecca", "In The Blood", "Silver And Gold", "Her Desire Is To Be Left Alone", "Transmission Of Eights" and more. TM JukeForward ... CD
Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity, 2006. Used ... $3.99
Forward, indeed – this this a big step up and some of the best work yet from TM Juke – his debut for Ubiquity! On Forward, the crafty producer/arranger/DJ, pushes the laptop bits and broken beats a little further out to the fringes – and focuses on the richer soul approach we love from his work with Alice Russell! The sound incorporates bits of spacey jazz, electro funk, and hip hop era thump – beat based but percolating sweetly under the vocals the rich aural tapestry! He brings out some great guest vocalists for the groovier soul sounding tunes – including Kinny of Kinny & Horne, Tru Thoughts compatriot Alice Russell, Elmore Judd and others – and the instrumental cuts are just as groovy! "Damn" feat Kinny, "Come Away" feat Sophie Faricy, "Bee's On Mars", "Arrggh!", "Skin" feat Naim, "So Good" feat Alice Russell, "Lady Garden", "Electric Chair" feat Elmore Judd, "Grounded In Fargo", "Life, Rain, Fall" and "Pencils For Dolphins". ✨✧ BonoboAnimal Magic (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ninja Tune/Tru Thoughts (UK), 2001. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first full length album from Bonobo – aka Simon Green – a set that's gone on to have a surprising amount of endurance over the years, and which really helped mark the pace for a new generation in the beats and soundscape universe! The record kind of takes off from the territory of Kruder & Dorfmeister in the decade before – with some low-end sounds that almost have you wanting to speed up the record, mixed with some lighter elements on top of the beats, and these bits of organic, almost exotic sounds – which might well be the biggest Bonobo contribution to the scene at the time. Titles include "Kota", "Terrapin", "The Plug", "Sugar Rhyme", "Silver", "Shadowtricks", "Sleepy Seven", and "Dinosaurs". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CuicaCity To City ... LP
Ubiquity, 2003. Sealed 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The debut release from Cuica – a group that features Simon Serrietella, aka Big Bang! Cuica take their name from a Brazilian percussion instrument that has a very unusual sound – and while this record has very little to do with Brazilian music, it does have a highly percussive sound – one that's almost a stripped-down version of the London broken beats of Big Bang. The groove is very spare on most cuts – and a lot of the basis for the percussion is natural instruments, sampled and looped in a way that gives the work a nice tribal kind of feel. Warm keyboards step out on a number of cuts, adding in a nicely soulful approach – and titles include "Nights Over Vauxhall", "Slipping Away", "Afrique", "Meierising (parts 2 & 3)", "Why Not Samba", and "Double Blues". Deee-LiteDewdrops In The Garden ... LP
Elektra/Get On Down, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $21.99
Not the famous debut album from Deee-Lite, but a killer set of grooves that has the trio very much at the height of their powers! So many folks remember these guys as a bigger pop act, they tend to forget how much they brought back to dance music – a real embrace of warmer elements from the past, served up in samples and set to rhythms that were often more funk-based than a lot of the stark, stiff, house-inspired beats of the time! Lady Kier is completely charming in the lead – and the group get lots of help on production from Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, who really add in a Masters At Work level of soul. Titles include "River Of Freedom", "Bittersweet Loving", "What Is This Music", "Picnic In The Summertime", "call Me", "Stay In Bed Forget The Rest", "Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector", and "Sampladelic". Everything But The GirlWalking Wounded (180 gram pressing – half speed master) ... LP
Atlantic/Buzzin' Fly, 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
A seminal set from Everything But The Girl – even if the record has them leaving behind everything that made them so unique back in the 80s! Gone are the jazzy riffs and retro elements – and instead, the lovely vocals and impeccable songwriting of Tracey Thorn are tied to more contemporary beats and rhythms – the real flowering of Ben Watt as a producer, as he mixes together spare, subtle elements into grooves that turn out to fit the EBTG aesthetic every bit as well as before! Titles include "The Heart Remains A Child", "Single", "Wrong", "Before Today", "Good Cop Bad Cop", "Mirrorball", and "Big Deal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Flevans27 Devils ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great recent work from one of the earliest artists on the Tru Thoughts label – funky Flevans, working here in a variety of styles that keeps things fresh throughout! Some of the tunes have the spare, beat-heavy feel of Flevans' early work – while others have a more developed sense of songcraft – full lyrics that really tie things together, and guitar-heavy instrumentation that may well cross the album into much bigger audiences than before. Some of the tunes are pretty darn catchy, yet never too poppy – thanks to the work of vocalists Shona Foster and Sarah Scott – and titles include "More On The Way", "Mad Perks", "Pretty From A Distance", "Hold On", "On & Out", "All To Play For", "Lay Back", and "Flicker". Foreign ExchangeConnected ... CD
BBE (UK), 2004. Used ... $5.99
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Tracks include "Von Sees", "Raw Life", "Let's Move", "Nic's Groove", "Sincere", "Brave New World", "The Answer", "Come Around", "Happiness", "All That You Are" and more. (Neo Soul, New Grooves) CD

Alessandro MagnaniniSomeway Still I Do (colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". Myele ManzanzaLove Requited ... LP
First Word (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
Beautifully dynamic work from drummer Myele Manzanza – an artist we've never heard work in this scope before, and we hope will soon do so again! The album's got Myele at the helm of a great large ensemble – a group who have a strong spiritual sense at the core, but often move in more vibrant rhythms driven by Manzana's work on the drums – not really funky, maybe more in an upbeat modal mode – which allows for great sounds from the rising crest of alto, trumpet, tenor, trombone, and flute in the lineup! Bass is by Ross McHenry, whose sound is a key core part of the record – and Ross also produced, as well – really capturing the right sort of vibe for the entire album. Myele's part of the Adelaide scene, in New Zealand – but we'd put this record right up there with some of the best work coming out of the London jazz world in recent years – with titles that include "Big Deal", "Madrid", "Itaru's Phone Booth", "Family Dynamics", "Ritual", and "A Love Requited". NicolayCity Lights Vol 2 – Shibuya ... CD
Hard Boiled, 2009. Used ... $4.99
Spacey soul soundscapes from Nicolay – another big step for the unpredictable, but always soulful beatmaker, producer, and artist – inspired by a consciousness awakening trip to Tokyo on Shibuya – City Lights Volume 2! When we were first tipped to Nicolay's sounds, it was from a soulful hip hop perspective, and he still carries that vibe, but the scope of colors he's composing with is broad – using them to craft material that's both intimate and hypnotic. Fresh beats, Rhodes, Moog, bass, strings and drums flavor the sound. Much of the material on this set is instrumental, but several tunes featuring lovely vocals by Carlitta Durand – with lyrics penned and vocal arrangements by frequent collaborator and Foreign Exchange partner Phonte Coleman. Titles include "Lose Your Way", "Saturday Night", "Wake Up In Another Life" and more with Carlitta Durand, "Shibuya Station", "Crossing", "Rain In Ueno Park", "A Ride Under The Neon Moon", "Bullet Train", "The Inner Garden", "Departure" and more. ✨✧ ToscaDifferent Tastes Of Honey ... CD
G Stone/K7 (Germany), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Everything you've ever come to expect from Tosca – heavy beats, tuneful flourishes, and a downtempo groove that never breaks its cool – despite the presence of a rich array of other remix talents here. The posturing gets a bit stiff for us at times – and makes us long for the naive innocence of the early Kruder & Dorfmeister days – but that's not really a problem if you want to put the CD on to impress your friends and mates. Includes work by Faze Action, Supatone, Funky Lowlives, Biggabush, Organic Audio, and others. CD
