✨✧ Deee-LiteWorld Clique ... CD
Elektra, 1990. Used ... $1.99
There's never been a better bit of pop throwaway dancefloor fodder ever! Sure, these guys were blaring out of every cheap radio at the time, and it was just about impossible to walk into a shopping mall without hearing "Groove Is In The Heart" for about 5 years after the album came out – but to us, that was a great thing, and the record represents one of the high points in pop music of the past 25 years. Thanks to some skillful sampling by Towa Tei, the group were grounded in a rich history of funk, house, disco, soul, and Brazilian influences – all of which they managed to blend with a postmodern perfection that other groups could only ever dream of! The big hits are certainly very familiar, but the whole album's a delight – and tracks include "Who Was That?", "Smile On", "Try Me On . . . I'm Very You", "World Clique", "ESP", and "Good Beat". A bevy of beat-oriented abstractions from the man behind the Wagon Christ and Plug monikers, cut at the height of the Mo Wax driven headz era. ✨✧ Mark De Clive-LoweLeaving This Planet EP (limited bonus track edition) ... CD
Mashibeats, 2011. Used ... $9.99
A great little EP from Mark De Clive-Lowe – whose way of inflecting timeless dancefloor heat with boundless cosmic atmosphere and a genuine love of global soul jazz has always been big part of his appeal – and he's doing it as deeply as ever here! The Leaving This Planet EP is centered around a sweet cover of the Charles Earland classic – featuring beautiful soul vocals by Sharlene Hector – and Mark also covers Gene Harris's "Koko + Lee Roe" for another gem with a jazzy soul vibe. Other tracks include the Afrobeat and dancefloor hybrids "Dreams" and "Love Broke", both featuring Bembe Segue, plus "What It Is", "Eight", "Freesoul Interlude (Live)", "The Calling" feat Olatunde and "Hope" feat Rahel. ✨✧ Deee-LiteDewdrops In The Garden ... LP
Elektra/Get On Down, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Not the famous debut album from Deee-Lite, but a killer set of grooves that has the trio very much at the height of their powers! So many folks remember these guys as a bigger pop act, they tend to forget how much they brought back to dance music – a real embrace of warmer elements from the past, served up in samples and set to rhythms that were often more funk-based than a lot of the stark, stiff, house-inspired beats of the time! Lady Kier is completely charming in the lead – and the group get lots of help on production from Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, who really add in a Masters At Work level of soul. Titles include "River Of Freedom", "Bittersweet Loving", "What Is This Music", "Picnic In The Summertime", "call Me", "Stay In Bed Forget The Rest", "Music Selector Is The Soul Reflector", and "Sampladelic". ✨✧ Foreign ExchangeConnected ... CD
BBE (UK), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Tracks include "Von Sees", "Raw Life", "Let's Move", "Nic's Groove", "Sincere", "Brave New World", "The Answer", "Come Around", "Happiness", "All That You Are" and more. (Neo Soul, New Grooves) CD

Groove ThingAdventure ... CD
Eightball, 1994. Used ... $2.99
Basically a group made up of members that had also recorded under the Groove Collective name, with a few missing and some other folks brought into the fold. They're under the wing of Bill Ware, who'd also played in the acclaimed straight jazz group of young lions, the Jazz Passengers – a big part of the Knitting Factory scene. He teams up with Jay Rodriguez here though, for a set with a great NY acid jazz vibe, equal parts sampled beats and live playing, with crisp production that never gets too slick, and some nice soulful vocals on a number of cuts. Nine tracks in all, including "Groove Thing", "Too Late", "On The Sand", "Sly 2" and "Sax It Up". CD

Grupo Batuque & OthersRhythmix – Reluque Batuque ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2002. Used ... $1.99
The rhythms of Grupo Batuque are remixed, reworked, and remade by a host of today's best producers and DJs – who take the complicated percussion grooves and forge them into a host of styles just right for the 21st Century dancefloor! The sound here is quite different from other Grupo Batuque albums – as the core sound of the ensemble is expanded tremendously, often with added beats and programming, additional keyboards, instrumentation, and the occasional vocal. Titles include "The Samba (4 Hero's nature's plan mix)" by 4 Hero, "Berimbal Capoeira" by Da Lata, "Read Between The Lines (Marco Tardelli's 1st Half)" by Big Bang, "Na Batida Do Agogo" by Osunlade, "E Ruim" by Zero DB, "Ole Ola" by Fauna Flash, "Keyzer (Dizub n Kutz mix)" by Masters At Work, and "Brazileiros E Ingleses" by Viper Squad. 11 tracks. ✨✧ Koom HKoom H ... CD
Big Sur (Italy), 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spacey keys and heavy beats from Koom H – the latest in a line of great Italian combos who mix acoustic instrumentation with well-chosen samples and programs! The sound here is almost a rougher take on the Schema mode – one that's more abstract than work on that label, but still filled with a range of solid instrumental moments, and a real love of acoustic bass bits and drums! That style's no surprise, really – given that Schema artists The Dining Rooms, Marco Bianchi, and Paolo Fedrighini all help out on the record – and although most titles are instrumentals, there's a few vocal numbers here that are especially great. Titles include a remake of Archie Shepp's "Song For Mozambique", plus "Mr Cool", "Ghost In Paradise", "Home", "Estate", "Move Your Funk", "Don Vito Corleone", "Just For A While", and "Rain". CD

Alessandro MagnaniniSomeway Still I Do (colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition double colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks!)

Ghislain PoirierNo Ground Under ... CD
Ninja Tune (Canada), 2008. Used ... $1.99
Montreal's never predictable Ghislain Poirier's first full length for the venerable Ninja Tune – with beats that cover diverse territory while still holding together as a tightly spun sound – from tight, hard hitting club bounce, to stuttering synth hop – with guest vocals from Fave-T, Abdominal, Omnicrom and others. We remember a more chill vibe on his earlier LPs, and grew to expected the unexpected with subsequent singles and remix work – here he is as extroverted and club floor ready as ever – with dancehall heaviness, big bass grooves, and trippiness in the outer edges. Titles include "Courto", "Blazin" feat Face-T, "Jusquy'en Haut" feat Omnikron, "Hit & Red", "No More Blood" feat Face-T, "Go Ballistic" feat Zulu, "One Hand Can't Clap", "City Walking" feat Abdominal, "It's A War War War", "Exils" feat Abdelhak Rahal, "Dem Nah Like M" feat Mr Lee G, "Mangnen L'Boule" feat Nik Myo and more. ✨✧ RuralsTenth Chapter ... CD
Peng (UK), 2007. Used ... $7.99
Hard to believe these guys have got 10 albums under their belt – but over the past decade or so, The Rurals have been quietly building up a heck of a great catalog of grooves – and this album's the latest chapter in their triumphant story! The Rurals have never gotten the acclaim or attention of some of the bigger acts on the international groove scene – but their music is wonderful, and some of the most soulful dancefloor work around – a beautiful blend of beats, keys, and soul – all served up with a lot more warmth and depth than most of their contemporaries! Vocals are by the lovely Marie Tweek, and Charlie Hearnshaw plays some great sax on a few cuts – and titles include "Show Me The Love", "Steps", "Saving Time", "Rain", "7th Sun", "So High", "I'm Lost", and "Liquid". VariousMad Mats Presents Digging Beyond The Crates ... CD
BBE (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
Mad Mats is not only digging beyond the crates here, he's also digging beyond any conventional expectations you might have – as the set's got a unique vibe that may well make it one of the most compelling BBE compilations in years! The music is from the late 60s through the present – but it all comes together in a very future-sounding way – with rhythms that are often offbeat, electric elements that seem to crackle with independent energy, and vocals that can fall down in the mix one minute and burst forth the next! This isn't a dance music compilation, and it's also not a set of rare funk tracks either – and instead, Mats creates his own very personal journey in sound – heedless of time periods, genres, and often national boundaries. Titles include "Take A Stand" by Psalms, "Big Big Boss" by Johnny Moore, "Badly" by Cuthead, "Sherriff (Murlo rmx)" by Gappy Ranks, "Keep The Music Alive" by Yvonne Gray, "Evil Woman" by Bobby Hebb, "Jazz In Outer Space" by BSTC, "The Traveller" by Deft, "Space Based" by Mode M, "Don't Hold Back The Feeling (key trip dub)" by U N I, "Animations" by Intimate Disco, and "Jah I See You" by Ensemble Entendu.
