Tom Misch & Yusef DayesSome Kinda Music ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Tom Misch and Yusef Dayes definitely make some kinda music here – a sweet blend of jazzy elements, contemporary soul, and a spacious, spacey vibe that resonates strongly with some of our favorite recent sounds from the west coast! The album's on Blue Note, but it's a bit different than some of the label's recent projects – even those that are more soul-based – as the vibe here is heavy on keyboards, vocals, and guitar from Misch – set up with drums from Dayes, in a style that's funky but mellow – all tripping out nicely, with help from a variety of guests along the way. Titles include "Tidal Wave", "The Real", "Sensational", "I Did It For You", "Julie Mangos", "Kyiv", "Last 100", and "What Kinda Music" – plus "Lift Off", with guest work from Rocco Palladino – and "Nightrider", with guest work from Freddie Gibbs! Da LataBirds ... CD
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". CD

Answer To RememberAnswer To Remember ... CD
Sony (Japan), New Copy ... $21.99
A fantastic little record from Shun Ishikawa – a drummer and keyboardist, and a musician who brings a sound to the set that's every bit as vibrant as the image on the cover! The groove is a bit hard to describe in easy words – as sometimes things are freewheeling and frenetic, other times locked in a sharp rhythmic pulse – leaping forward between different modes with the kind of boundless energy that takes us back to earlier work by some of our favorite Japanese groups, like Quasimode or Soil & Pimp Sessions! There's maybe a more open vibe going on here, as the lineup shifts from track to track – making room for guests who include Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, and singers who include Ermhoi, Kid Fresino, Karai, and Jua. Titles include "Tokyo", "Still So What", "Run", "Cicada Shells", "Gna", and "Life For Kiss". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

AstronauticaDeath Valley ... CD
Alpha Pup, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 12.98
Death Valley is emblazoned on the cover, and portrayed inside the CD gatefold too – but the music here is more cosmic than earthy – served up in these warm washes of electro elements that are totally great – dreamily tripping over the landscape in a laidback yet soulful sort of way! Edrina Martinez Sanchez created all the sounds here – and although she does sing a bit, the vocals are usually processed down in the mix – leaving the beats, keyboards, and electronics to provide most of the soulful scope of the sound. Titles include "California Roll", "Reasons", "Racetracks", "Sand & Fog", "I've Never Been", "Mahogany", and "Palms". CD

BlundettoSlow Dance ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
The title's a great one for this album by Blundetto – given that the groove is beautifully deep, and the music moves at a pace that would make it hard to do anything but dance slow! Yet the set's not a sleepy one – as it's got all the richness and complexity of previous Blundetto efforts, and show the continuing evolution to dubbier corners of the musical spectrum explored on the past few records – a revision of Jamaican roots, but with a sound that's never standard reggae at all – despite guest appearances from Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, and others. Titles include "Good Ol Days", "My Weed My Queen", "Passed The Worst", "Have A Little Faith", "Story Never Told", "Colombette", "Chamber Dub", "History Dance", and "Satta". CD

Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Cinematic OrchestraTo Believe ... CD
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. Titles include "To Believe", "A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life", "A Promise", "Zero One/This Fantasy", "The Workers Of Art", and "Wait For Now/Leave The World". CD
