Shawn Lee's Ping Pong OrchestraMusic & Rhythm – Ubiquity Studio Sessions Vol 1 ... CD
Ubiquity, 2004. Used ... $2.99
Heavy funk from Shawn Lee – known best in recent years for his stunning production work, but really stepping out here as a funky artist in his own right! Shawn's been sneaking out some killer singles over the past few years, but this set's his first really full funky outing – a blistering array of tracks that pays tribute to the Sound Library sound of DeWolfe, KPM, and other classic labels from the 60s and 70s. Most tracks are short and thematic, with sweet funky elements that include electric sitar, fuzzed-up guitar, echoey percussion, snapping drum breaks, and burning organ and keyboard bits! The whole thing comes across extremely well – very very classic-sounding, without any gimmicks or tricks – just a cold, stone, simple batch of funk tracks, served up with perfect production! Titles include "Sexy Beast", "Bollywood", "Italian Stallion", "King Conga", "Drum Monkey", "Spytown", "El Duce", "Organ Grinder", "Scorpion", "Sammy's Theme", and "Boss Bossa". Tom Misch & Yusef DayesSome Kinda Music ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Tom Misch and Yusef Dayes definitely make some kinda music here – a sweet blend of jazzy elements, contemporary soul, and a spacious, spacey vibe that resonates strongly with some of our favorite recent sounds from the west coast! The album's on Blue Note, but it's a bit different than some of the label's recent projects – even those that are more soul-based – as the vibe here is heavy on keyboards, vocals, and guitar from Misch – set up with drums from Dayes, in a style that's funky but mellow – all tripping out nicely, with help from a variety of guests along the way. Titles include "Tidal Wave", "The Real", "Sensational", "I Did It For You", "Julie Mangos", "Kyiv", "Last 100", and "What Kinda Music" – plus "Lift Off", with guest work from Rocco Palladino – and "Nightrider", with guest work from Freddie Gibbs! RyusenkeiCity Music ... LP
April (Japan), 2003. New Copy ... About July 23, 2020
A really wonderful bit of Japanese soul – one of the jazziest and most laidback records we've heard from the Japanese scene in years! Ryusenkei are a combo with a female lead vocalist and supporting instrumentation in a real 70s-styled blend of keyboards, guitar, and percussion – all touched with a bit of strings. The overall sound really takes us back to the best indie soul of the late acid jazz years – that rare point in the mid 90s when only a few records ever caught our ears as being worthy of the kind of soul we'd liked from years back, and even then most of them were from overseas sources like this one! The lyrics are all in Japanese, but that shouldn't bother you at all because the overall sound is totally great – a mix of smooth funk and sweet R&B, done at a level that almost recalls some of the best work from the British scene from more than a decade ago. Titles include "Tokyo Coaster", "Airport 80", "Friday Nite", "Don't Stop Feeling Loving You", and "Route No 3 Shibuya". LP, Vinyl record album

Moreno VelosoMaquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... CD
Hannibal, 2001. Used ... $3.99
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

Da LataBirds ... CD
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". CD

DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". Still Music (Germany), 2007. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $0.99
A bright little tune from Markus Enochson & The Subliminal Kid – quick beats and light keyboards, pulsating together nicely – but with a lighter feel than you might guess from the strength of the groove! This one's slightly in a soulful house vein, but it's more instrumental and somewhat more electronic – and is followed by the more abstract "Chord Song" on the flipside – a tune that almost has a Sonar Kollektiv feel overall! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Tribe (UK), 2013. Used ... $16.99
Warm audio therapy from Nathan Adams – an artist who works here in a sublime blend of club and soul – with a style that maybe recalls the best of the Naked Music generation – or maybe the tightest work of Peven Everett too! There's a warm glow to most of the album – but not in a way that's too smooth or slick – just seductively poised to groove along with Adams' great lyrics! Most tunes have a positive feel that fits the upbeat sound of the music – and titles include "Melody", "Don't Break My Heart", "Fade Away", "Chasing Love", "Stay Away", and "Afraid Of The Dark". CD

Roman AndrenJuanita & Beyond – Live Studio Sessions ... CD
Ajabu/P-Vine (Japan), 2008. Used ... $18.99
Incredible work from Roman Andren – a genre-defying set that's filled with warmth, soul, and imagination – all recorded live in the studio with a really organic feel! The music's a cross between a few different jazz, Afro, and Latin modes – played by a group that features Roman on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, with tenor, flute, trumpet, guitar, and some especially great rhythms – lively percussion that brings a bit of a Latin or Brazilian flavor to the music at points, and pushes the set with some great club jazz energy. There's a bit of vocals on the record too – sung by Susanne Ottebring or Miriam Aida – and Fredrik Kronkvist also plays a bit of guest alto sax too. The whole thing's wonderful – a warmly seductive album that really grabs us from the get-go – filled with wonderful tunes that include "Long Ago & Far Far Away", "Felaflight", "Nawana", "Bumblebee", "Let's Live Forever Love", "It's Nice", and "O Mundo E Seu". Answer To RememberAnswer To Remember ... CD
Sony (Japan), New Copy ... $21.99
A fantastic little record from Shun Ishikawa – a drummer and keyboardist, and a musician who brings a sound to the set that's every bit as vibrant as the image on the cover! The groove is a bit hard to describe in easy words – as sometimes things are freewheeling and frenetic, other times locked in a sharp rhythmic pulse – leaping forward between different modes with the kind of boundless energy that takes us back to earlier work by some of our favorite Japanese groups, like Quasimode or Soil & Pimp Sessions! There's maybe a more open vibe going on here, as the lineup shifts from track to track – making room for guests who include Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, and singers who include Ermhoi, Kid Fresino, Karai, and Jua. Titles include "Tokyo", "Still So What", "Run", "Cicada Shells", "Gna", and "Life For Kiss". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

Aphex TwinSyro ... LP
Warp, 2014. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... $24.99
The first proper full length album by Aphex Twin in more than a dozen years – and like all of his preceding efforts, he transcends all electronic music genre distinctions, delivering a sound that's distinctly his own – a sound that'll stand the test of time! Glance at the ultra-complicated track titles, and you might expect the strangest, most outre aural science of his career, but to the contrary, it's highly melodic and insistent stuff – finding him him working comfortably at home in his own canon, without repeating past glories. Excellent later work from one of the most consistently rewarding electronic music artists of the past several decades. It seems like Richard D. James doesn't ever bother to release his stuff if he doesn't have something great in the hopper, and Syro is indeed pretty great! "Minipops 67 [120.2][Source Field Mix]", "XMAS_EVET10 [120] [Thanaton3 Mix]", "[Produk 29 [101]", "4 bit 9d api+e+6 [126.26]", "180db_ [130]", "CIRCLONT6A [141.98][Syrobonkus Mix]", "CIRCLONT14 [152.97][Shrymoming Mix]", "Syro u473t8+e [141.98][Piezoluminescence Mix]", "PAPAT4 [155][Pineal Mix]", "Aisatsana [102]" and more. AstronauticaDeath Valley ... CD
Alpha Pup, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 12.98
Death Valley is emblazoned on the cover, and portrayed inside the CD gatefold too – but the music here is more cosmic than earthy – served up in these warm washes of electro elements that are totally great – dreamily tripping over the landscape in a laidback yet soulful sort of way! Edrina Martinez Sanchez created all the sounds here – and although she does sing a bit, the vocals are usually processed down in the mix – leaving the beats, keyboards, and electronics to provide most of the soulful scope of the sound. Titles include "California Roll", "Reasons", "Racetracks", "Sand & Fog", "I've Never Been", "Mahogany", and "Palms". CD

Beady BelleAt Welding Bridge ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2010. Used ... $4.99
A beautiful album from Beady Belle – the group and wonderful vessel for the seductive, entrancing voice and songs of Beate S. Lech – possibly their best yet! Beady Belle have made deeply engaging blend of modern jazzy soul and beautiful mood music for most of the outs, taking a step back just a bit from the slightly more crossover ready songs of Belvedere album into more intimate, yet just was inviting material on At Welding Bridge. Beate's vocals are as sultry and hypnotic as ever, singing with warmth and genuine emotion in elegant, but not overly precious way – and the instrumentation suits her perfectly. Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer or other keys, some truly excellent guitar, clarinet, flute, electric bass and percussion frame the vocals on most tracks, and some of the tracks were cut at home, which we believe, given the warmth and intimacy. Titles include "Diamond In The Rough", "Come Home", "The Storm", "Runaway Mind", "Bird's-Eye View", "Turn Back Time", "Press Of Canvas", "Leeway", "Ambush" and "Walk On Air". Berardi Jazz ConnectionDo It ... CD
Antibemusic (Italy), 2007. Used ... $8.99
A compelling set of club jazz work from Italy – proof that the nation's scene has plenty to offer besides well known work on Schema Records! We really dug the previous album from Berardi Jazz Connection, and this set is equally great – a sweet-stepping batch of jazz tracks that runs between modal numbers and soulful grooves – served up in a blend of instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, and drums – used in varying ways from track to track, and occasionally augmented by a bit of soulful female vocals. The rhythms here are very much in the best spirit of the contemporary club jazz scene, but are also pretty fresh too – a bit more loosened up from the straight Schema mode, and inflected with a wider range of soulful influences. Titles include "To Brian", "O Prazer De Ser", "The Renegade", "Relax", "FDP", "Play Kid", "Friendly", "Lies", and "Last Night A Cat Stopped Me". CD

Hot Casa (France), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99
A great little funky single from Franck Biyong – part of his continuing evolution and growth as one of the leading lights in the contemporary Afro Funk underground – an artist who's really moved past some of the slavish styles of years behind! Franck adds in both live drums and rhythm programs here – chanting out the vocals with Cristina Violle alongside him in the lead – while keyboardist Florian Pellissier and a jazzy combo keep things moving in the back! All three vocal mixes of the tune are great, but the club mix may well be the best – although the whole four track single works together almost as a mini suite based on the music! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A crackling little full length set from Fred Peterkin – aka Black Jazz Consortium – a set that continues his forward-thinking approach to a groove, but which also brings in a recent love of the music of Brazil as well! The Brazilian elements here are very spare – this is still mostly future house overall – but the lighter touches really open up the sound, and especially speak to the warmer collaborative energy from a list of guests who include Leonardo Peretti Reibnitz, Trovao Rocham, Leo Vieira, Bruna Elisabetsky, and Slikk Tim. Titles include "More Blessings", "Another Path", "Salvador", "Brisbane", "Energies Collide", "Focus", "Love Alliance", "Resonate", "Soul People For Life", and "Sacred Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
The title's a great one for this album by Blundetto – given that the groove is beautifully deep, and the music moves at a pace that would make it hard to do anything but dance slow! Yet the set's not a sleepy one – as it's got all the richness and complexity of previous Blundetto efforts, and show the continuing evolution to dubbier corners of the musical spectrum explored on the past few records – a revision of Jamaican roots, but with a sound that's never standard reggae at all – despite guest appearances from Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, and others. Titles include "Good Ol Days", "My Weed My Queen", "Passed The Worst", "Have A Little Faith", "Story Never Told", "Colombette", "Chamber Dub", "History Dance", and "Satta". CD

Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". King Britt/Philadelphia ExperimentKing Britt Presents Philadelphia Experiment Remixed ... CD
Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... $6.99
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". Cinematic OrchestraTo Believe ... CD
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. Titles include "To Believe", "A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life", "A Promise", "Zero One/This Fantasy", "The Workers Of Art", and "Wait For Now/Leave The World". CD
