Herb AlpertHerb Alpert Reimagines The Tijuana Brass Music Vol 3 ... CD
Herb Alpert, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
Herb Alpert remakes himself again – taking all the best tunes from his classic years on A&M records, then fitting them to contemporary grooves – all at a level that's a bit like some of the Verve Remixed projects from years back, but even better! These aren't remixes, but new versions – as Herb blows strong trumpet lines over the top of beats, keyboards, and other contemporary elements – all while keeping that Tijuana Brass punch in his horn, on versions of "Whipped Cream", "Spanish Flea/Rise", "The Lonely Bull", "El Presidente", "Spanish Harlem", "Green Peppers", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Bittersweet Samba". HUWMusic From The Multiverse ... CD
Ropeadope, 2017. Used ... $1.99
The cover's got a couple of monkeys playing the music – but the sound here actually comes from bothers Mike and Aaron Dolton – the first of whom plays the drums, the latter who seems to handle just about everything else! Their music is a blend of jazz and soul – sometimes with the kind of future elements you'd guess from the image, sometimes more understated – in a good fit with the more sensitive lyrics of the album's range of different singers – who include Jube (Julie Clarkson), Bennett Holland, Sid M, and Jamie Paul. A few tracks are instrumental – with more of a focus on the sax and drums – and titles include "Baskerville", "Last Minute", "Already Home", "Midnight", "Foot Down", "Flow State", and "Thank You". Rongetz FoundationAlphabet City Music Club ... LP
Brooklyn Butterfly, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
We've loved these guys since the start, but this time around they really seem to be knocking it out of the park – fusing their fantastic blend of funky jazz and contemporary soul with a fresher vibe than they've ever had before! These guys draw on plenty of classic elements, but never sound like a retro group at all – as they've got this bold spirit and forward-thinking energy that bristles with positivity, and really marks their music right from the start. The singers get some really great space in the spotlight this time around – a lineup that includes Vanisha Gould, Alina Engibaryan, Mr Day, and Vuyo Sotashe – plus rapper Lewis Parker. Rongetz plays trumpet, produced, and arranged – and instrumentation includes some great keyboards and organ, plus tenor, alto, and flute. Tracks include "The Tour Song", "Clapping Your Soul", "Funky Fancy NYC", "Death Of A Music Box", "Success Success", "Murky Park", and "Somehow Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Yap ZeelandMusic As A Gradual Process ... CD
Bocajito (UK), 2005. Used ... $2.99
Mostly a set of downtempo grooves, but one that's put together with a fair bit of jazz in the mix – thanks to some especially nice electric piano work on the record! Yap's got a style here that's a bit undercover – hiding his identity (and sometimes his talents) underneath beats and samples that are trying a bit too hard to be cool, but which fall back at the best moments to reveal some stronger work on the keys. There's a slight dubby feel to some tracks, and the album has a somewhat dated use of found spoken bits – but sticking to the solos, there's plenty here to enjoy. Titles include "Gerkintinis", "Never Be Mine", "Heavy Heart", "Hip Hop Harold", "Warm Sunny Days", "Meditations", and "Crackly 105". CD

Da LataBirds ... LP
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". Monday MichiruSoulception ... CD
Adventure Music, 2012. Used ... $2.99
Fantastic sounds from Monday Michiru – quite possibly her greatest album in years, and one that really draws together all the best elements of her style! The vocals are wonderful – soaring, fluid, and filled with soul – almost more confident than ever – and set to these small group jazz arrangements that still bounce around with lots of contemporary rhythms – yet all played live, almost in a clubjazz mode – which makes for a perfect backdrop for Monday's lyrics! As always, the vibe is righteous, and the spirit is totally uplifting – the kind of amazing music that's held us rapt, watching her career for the past two decades – never disappointed, and always blown away by the rich progression in her music. Monday plays a bit of flute on the record, Ed Motta sings guest vocals on a version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Bridges" – and other titles include "Adventures", "What Is In A Soul", "Map Of The Soul", "What Defines You", "Brasilianos", "Til Morning Comes Again", and "The Elusive Song". RandolphEchoes Of Lonely Eden ... CD
Still Music (Germany), 2010. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
A nicely reworked version of Randolph's Lonely Eden record – one that features the whole core album, plus a full bonus CD of new mixes! The core album is an amazing bit of cosmic soul from Paul Randolph – a set that seems to take some of the best energy going down on the Detroit scene in recent years, and focus it together with a new sense of power and intensity! Randolph plays bass and sings on the set – the former in a bumping, funky style that sounds especially nice next to the heavy acoustic drums mixed in alongside the beats – and the latter in a sweetly crackling way that carries some echoes of 70s Motown, but which also pushes forward in a much more righteous direction. The tunes are quite positive and powerful – and there's a really stripped-down feel to most of the set – no overdone production or heavy remixing – just core small combo instrumentation that's often mostly live, and which maintains a really spontaneous, personal feel for the set. Guests include Stephanie McKay and Waajeed – but Randolph's clearly the star of the show, and we're hoping the show's one we'll be getting for many years to come! Titles include "Broken", "Soul Brutha", "Earth 2 God", "GPS", "Lonely Eden", "Leanin", "Valentine", "Believer", and "Eda Mae". Then, the "Echoes" disc brings in mixes that really take Randolph's vision even further – some killer cuts that include "Golden Days (Aaron Jerome mix)", "Earth 2 God (Mike Banks mix)", "Leanin (Deetron mix)", "Lonely Eden (Simbad Slow mix)", "Golden Days (Zed Bias mix)", "Eda Mae (Todd Sines mix)", and "GPS (Recloose mix)". Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) CD

Jazzland (Norway), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Beady Belle never lets us down – and even though the lady's been making music for well over a decade, she still turns out some of the most consistently thoughtful soul we can think of! Forget the fact that the singer's on a Norwegian label, as the lyrics here are all in English, backed by warmly jazzy instrumentation that's always made Beady's music hugely popular with our customers for American neo-soul – and which puts her in the same territory as other classic "in the know" artists, such as Monday Michiru or Incognito! The keyboards are especially nice this time around – as thoughtful as the lyrics and the vocals – and titles include "I Run You Ragged", "Hold Your Breath", "Traces", "Dedication", "Waste Of Grace", "Last Drop Of Blood", "Can You Smile", and "Out Of Orbit". We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. A timeless, crackling soul and west coast funk-inspired hip hop instrumentals set from Melting Pot Music supergroup Betty Ford Boys – the triple threat production trio of Suff Daddy, Dexter and Brenk Sinatra! Each one manages to serve up what we've dug to date from their earlier, separate productions – from the Moog-flavored funk of Suff Daddy, to the classic G-Funk-inspired funk of Brenk Sinatra, to the hip hop funk electicism of Dexter – and it's all held together nicely thanks the intoxicating concept and the thematic vocal samples. Mario BiondiBrasil (with bonus track) ... CD
Sony (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic new setting for the magnificent voice of Mario Biondi – a set that has the Italian crooner working alongside co-producer Kassin – who helps give Mario this very groovy take on Brazilian music! The style is mostly upbeat and soulful – a bit like the grooves on early albums by Ed Motta – but there's also plenty of the inventive touches we love in the music of Kassin – a great balance that keeps things from ever sounding too commercial, even though the songs are all pretty darn catchy! Biondi sings in both English and Portuguese – and although the whole album is a real change from his jazz-based work, it's completely delightful – and we hope the start of more music like this! Titles include "Take Me To The Stars", "Devotion", "Upside Down", "Sophia", "It's You I'll Always Love", "Luiza", "Mundo Coloridao", and a version of "Smooth Operator" with guest work by Till Bronner! As usual, Blaze are far more soulful than most of their contemporaries – and in this set, they've gone way past the usual batch of dancefloor tunes, to create a richly varied set of tracks that sparkles like a classic soul album! The title's a great one for this album by Blundetto – given that the groove is beautifully deep, and the music moves at a pace that would make it hard to do anything but dance slow! Yet the set's not a sleepy one – as it's got all the richness and complexity of previous Blundetto efforts, and show the continuing evolution to dubbier corners of the musical spectrum explored on the past few records – a revision of Jamaican roots, but with a sound that's never standard reggae at all – despite guest appearances from Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, and others. The music is every bit as funky as before, but there's also a nice criss-crossing of elements from Brazilian music, Afro Funk, and even a bit of contemporary house – served up with just the right sort of variety to match the moods of the guest stars. Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Brand New HeaviesElephantitis – The Funk & House Remixes Volume 2 ... CD
Delicious Vinyl/Traffic, Early 90s. Used ... $12.99
The Brand New Heavies are heavier than ever here – heard in a sweet set of club tracks and remixes from their big early 90s years on the US market – all with the sort of grooves that helped them cross over big at the time! The core, classic funk that the Brand New Heavies first brought into play was already totally great on its own – but possibly not the best fit for the grooves going down in the US scene – so the group and their label cooked up plenty of variations on all the best bits – cuts that changed up the rhythms, instrumentation, and even some of the vocal passages – all in really creative ways that always made Heavies singles well worth tracking down for the new mixes! This 2CD package features a disc of funk mixes, and a disc of house cuts – a hell of a lot of music, especially considering how rare most of this stuff was, even at the time. Titles include "Dream On Dreamer (Dallas Austin mix)", "Never Stop (Jan Kincaid voc)", "Stay This Way (Morales mix)", "People Get Ready (rmx)", "You Can Do It (colossal funk rmx)", "Sometimes (Diti's French touch)", "Midnight At The Oasis (up north mix)", "World Keeps Spinning (Spen-N-Jo's world mix)", "Shelter (Harvey's disco stomp)", "Dream Come True 92 (reality mix)", "Dream On Dreamer (T-empura club mix)", "You Are The Universe (Tuff Jam's 2 in 1 rmx)", "Sometimes (Notre Dame rmx)", "World Keeps Spinning (BHN puttin the funk back in it rmx)", "Mind Trips (superstar rmx)", "Spend Some Time (Marden Hill get smart mix)", "Brother Sister (stone one guitar inst)", "Back To Love (Heavies good time mix)", and "Shelter (Jan's big funk with Rodney P)". Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". ✨✧ King Britt/Philadelphia ExperimentKing Britt Presents Philadelphia Experiment Remixed ... CD
Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... $6.99
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. R&S, 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 29.99
Afriqua's got a continental reference in his name, but a sound that's very forward-thinking overall – music that's supposedly inspired by classics from Roy Ayers, Quincy Jones, and Weldon Irvine – but which sounds completely different than those inspirations! Instead, Afriqua's sound is almost a sci-fi reimagining of a new future in which the past has been pulled forward and completely transformed – almost as if someone took all the energy that 4Hero were going for 20 years back, then cut it up, slimmed it down, and put it back together – offering up a double-process reworking of old school elements. The cover bears elements of Chicago house party flyers, and even our fantastic WBMX radio station from back in the day – but the music is completely contemporary, and very distinct – with tracks that include "Noir", "Upstream", "Sociodelic", "Shout", "Dope", "Tema", "At Last", "Space Dookie", "Whatever Means", "Burns", "Native Sun", and "Zenith". The first proper full length album by Aphex Twin in more than a dozen years – and like all of his preceding efforts, he transcends all electronic music genre distinctions, delivering a sound that's distinctly his own – a sound that'll stand the test of time! Glance at the ultra-complicated track titles, and you might expect the strangest, most outre aural science of his career, but to the contrary, it's highly melodic and insistent stuff – finding him him working comfortably at home in his own canon, without repeating past glories. Excellent later work from one of the most consistently rewarding electronic music artists of the past several decades. It seems like Richard D. James doesn't ever bother to release his stuff if he doesn't have something great in the hopper, and Syro is indeed pretty great! City Of Women (Jimi Tenor & Edward Vesala)City Of Women II ... LP
Sahko (Finland), 1998. New Copy ... $18.99
Very fluid, freewheeling sounds from this Finnish quintet – material recorded relatively early in the career of some of the musicians, and already showing a tremendous ear for the sorts of fresh styles they'd create in years to come! The group is co-led by Jimi Tenor and Edward Vesala – both of whom produce – and the music is a mix of improvised jazz, electronics, and some very cool production effects – all used in ways that are looser and with more edge than some of the other sides of the Scandinavian scene were handling with jazz during the same generation. Tenor plays flute, tenor, and other instruments – Vesala handles drums and other instruments too – and the group also features a bit of harp from Iro Haarla, programming from Jimi Sumen, and instrument design and construction from Matti Knaapi. Titles include "Sergei", "Auloharp", "Ball Bearing", "Dumpster Diving", "Heat Birth", and "Dangerous Crossing". LP, Vinyl record album
