Shawn Lee's Ping Pong OrchestraMusic & Rhythm – Ubiquity Studio Sessions Vol 1 ... CD
Ubiquity, 2004. Used ... $6.99
Heavy funk from Shawn Lee – known best in recent years for his stunning production work, but really stepping out here as a funky artist in his own right! Shawn's been sneaking out some killer singles over the past few years, but this set's his first really full funky outing – a blistering array of tracks that pays tribute to the Sound Library sound of DeWolfe, KPM, and other classic labels from the 60s and 70s. Most tracks are short and thematic, with sweet funky elements that include electric sitar, fuzzed-up guitar, echoey percussion, snapping drum breaks, and burning organ and keyboard bits! The whole thing comes across extremely well – very very classic-sounding, without any gimmicks or tricks – just a cold, stone, simple batch of funk tracks, served up with perfect production! Titles include "Sexy Beast", "Bollywood", "Italian Stallion", "King Conga", "Drum Monkey", "Spytown", "El Duce", "Organ Grinder", "Scorpion", "Sammy's Theme", and "Boss Bossa". Da LataBirds ... CD
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". CD

DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". Markus Enochson & The Subliminal KidTwo Guys & A Dog – No Only In Sweden/Chord song ... 12-inch
Still Music (Germany), 2007. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $2.99
A bright little tune from Markus Enochson & The Subliminal Kid – quick beats and light keyboards, pulsating together nicely – but with a lighter feel than you might guess from the strength of the groove! This one's slightly in a soulful house vein, but it's more instrumental and somewhat more electronic – and is followed by the more abstract "Chord Song" on the flipside – a tune that almost has a Sonar Kollektiv feel overall! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A timeless trio of dancefloor stunners from house legend Alton Miller! "Inner 5" is light and compelling at the seam time, the beats busy not pounding too hear, the jazzy keyboards floating throughout, the jazz funk synth coming in a little bit thicker on "Inner 7". "Inner 8" fills out the other side with a little bit heavier a bounce to the beat. 12-inch, Vinyl record

RandolphEchoes Of Lonely Eden ... CD
Still Music (Germany), 2010. Used 2 CDs ... $2.99
A nicely reworked version of Randolph's Lonely Eden record – one that features the whole core album, plus a full bonus CD of new mixes! The core album is an amazing bit of cosmic soul from Paul Randolph – a set that seems to take some of the best energy going down on the Detroit scene in recent years, and focus it together with a new sense of power and intensity! Randolph plays bass and sings on the set – the former in a bumping, funky style that sounds especially nice next to the heavy acoustic drums mixed in alongside the beats – and the latter in a sweetly crackling way that carries some echoes of 70s Motown, but which also pushes forward in a much more righteous direction. The tunes are quite positive and powerful – and there's a really stripped-down feel to most of the set – no overdone production or heavy remixing – just core small combo instrumentation that's often mostly live, and which maintains a really spontaneous, personal feel for the set. Guests include Stephanie McKay and Waajeed – but Randolph's clearly the star of the show, and we're hoping the show's one we'll be getting for many years to come! Titles include "Broken", "Soul Brutha", "Earth 2 God", "GPS", "Lonely Eden", "Leanin", "Valentine", "Believer", and "Eda Mae". Then, the "Echoes" disc brings in mixes that really take Randolph's vision even further – some killer cuts that include "Golden Days (Aaron Jerome mix)", "Earth 2 God (Mike Banks mix)", "Leanin (Deetron mix)", "Lonely Eden (Simbad Slow mix)", "Golden Days (Zed Bias mix)", "Eda Mae (Todd Sines mix)", and "GPS (Recloose mix)". Answer To RememberAnswer To Remember ... CD
Sony (Japan), New Copy ... $29.99
A fantastic little record from Shun Ishikawa – a drummer and keyboardist, and a musician who brings a sound to the set that's every bit as vibrant as the image on the cover! The groove is a bit hard to describe in easy words – as sometimes things are freewheeling and frenetic, other times locked in a sharp rhythmic pulse – leaping forward between different modes with the kind of boundless energy that takes us back to earlier work by some of our favorite Japanese groups, like Quasimode or Soil & Pimp Sessions! There's maybe a more open vibe going on here, as the lineup shifts from track to track – making room for guests who include Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, and singers who include Ermhoi, Kid Fresino, Karai, and Jua. Titles include "Tokyo", "Still So What", "Run", "Cicada Shells", "Gna", and "Life For Kiss". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) CD

Beady BelleDedication ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Beady Belle never lets us down – and even though the lady's been making music for well over a decade, she still turns out some of the most consistently thoughtful soul we can think of! Forget the fact that the singer's on a Norwegian label, as the lyrics here are all in English, backed by warmly jazzy instrumentation that's always made Beady's music hugely popular with our customers for American neo-soul – and which puts her in the same territory as other classic "in the know" artists, such as Monday Michiru or Incognito! The keyboards are especially nice this time around – as thoughtful as the lyrics and the vocals – and titles include "I Run You Ragged", "Hold Your Breath", "Traces", "Dedication", "Waste Of Grace", "Last Drop Of Blood", "Can You Smile", and "Out Of Orbit". Beady BelleAt Welding Bridge ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2010. Used ... $4.99
A beautiful album from Beady Belle – the group and wonderful vessel for the seductive, entrancing voice and songs of Beate S. Lech – possibly their best yet! Beady Belle have made deeply engaging blend of modern jazzy soul and beautiful mood music for most of the outs, taking a step back just a bit from the slightly more crossover ready songs of Belvedere album into more intimate, yet just was inviting material on At Welding Bridge. Beate's vocals are as sultry and hypnotic as ever, singing with warmth and genuine emotion in elegant, but not overly precious way – and the instrumentation suits her perfectly. Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer or other keys, some truly excellent guitar, clarinet, flute, electric bass and percussion frame the vocals on most tracks, and some of the tracks were cut at home, which we believe, given the warmth and intimacy. Titles include "Diamond In The Rough", "Come Home", "The Storm", "Runaway Mind", "Bird's-Eye View", "Turn Back Time", "Press Of Canvas", "Leeway", "Ambush" and "Walk On Air". Betty Ford Boys (Suff Daddy, Dexter, Brenk SinatraLeaders Of The Brew School ... CD
Melting Pot (Germany), 2013. Used ... $8.99
A timeless, crackling soul and west coast funk-inspired hip hop instrumentals set from Melting Pot Music supergroup Betty Ford Boys – the triple threat production trio of Suff Daddy, Dexter and Brenk Sinatra! Each one manages to serve up what we've dug to date from their earlier, separate productions – from the Moog-flavored funk of Suff Daddy, to the classic G-Funk-inspired funk of Brenk Sinatra, to the hip hop funk electicism of Dexter – and it's all held together nicely thanks the intoxicating concept and the thematic vocal samples. Includes "The Time Has Come (4 Us To Be One)", "Hero Heroin", "Icky", "Papa Was ( A Junky), Too", "Everyday", "Tell Her", "Sippin'", "Legalize Every MF Thing", "Hold Up", "Making Love Good", "Coco Puffs", "I Need A 40", "Snow Soul", "Till The Wheels Fall Off", "Drinkin' Hennessy" and more. Franck Biyong with Cristina ViolleTrouble – Anywhere Trouble (club mix, radio edit, inst)/Trouble (beats) ... 12-inch
Hot Casa (France), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $24.99
A great little funky single from Franck Biyong – part of his continuing evolution and growth as one of the leading lights in the contemporary Afro Funk underground – an artist who's really moved past some of the slavish styles of years behind! Franck adds in both live drums and rhythm programs here – chanting out the vocals with Cristina Violle alongside him in the lead – while keyboardist Florian Pellissier and a jazzy combo keep things moving in the back! All three vocal mixes of the tune are great, but the club mix may well be the best – although the whole four track single works together almost as a mini suite based on the music! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Black Jazz ConsortiumEvolution Of Light (3LP set) ... LP
Perpetual, 2019. New Copy 3LP ... $25.99
A crackling little full length set from Fred Peterkin – aka Black Jazz Consortium – a set that continues his forward-thinking approach to a groove, but which also brings in a recent love of the music of Brazil as well! The Brazilian elements here are very spare – this is still mostly future house overall – but the lighter touches really open up the sound, and especially speak to the warmer collaborative energy from a list of guests who include Leonardo Peretti Reibnitz, Trovao Rocham, Leo Vieira, Bruna Elisabetsky, and Slikk Tim. Titles include "More Blessings", "Another Path", "Salvador", "Brisbane", "Energies Collide", "Focus", "Love Alliance", "Resonate", "Soul People For Life", and "Sacred Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

BlundettoSlow Dance ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
The title's a great one for this album by Blundetto – given that the groove is beautifully deep, and the music moves at a pace that would make it hard to do anything but dance slow! Yet the set's not a sleepy one – as it's got all the richness and complexity of previous Blundetto efforts, and show the continuing evolution to dubbier corners of the musical spectrum explored on the past few records – a revision of Jamaican roots, but with a sound that's never standard reggae at all – despite guest appearances from Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, and others. Titles include "Good Ol Days", "My Weed My Queen", "Passed The Worst", "Have A Little Faith", "Story Never Told", "Colombette", "Chamber Dub", "History Dance", and "Satta". CD

Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". Cinematic OrchestraTo Believe ... CD
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. Titles include "To Believe", "A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life", "A Promise", "Zero One/This Fantasy", "The Workers Of Art", and "Wait For Now/Leave The World". CD

Death Valley is emblazoned on the cover, and portrayed inside the CD gatefold too – but the music here is more cosmic than earthy – served up in these warm washes of electro elements that are totally great – dreamily tripping over the landscape in a laidback yet soulful sort of way! Edrina Martinez Sanchez created all the sounds here – and although she does sing a bit, the vocals are usually processed down in the mix – leaving the beats, keyboards, and electronics to provide most of the soulful scope of the sound. Titles include "California Roll", "Reasons", "Racetracks", "Sand & Fog", "I've Never Been", "Mahogany", and "Palms". CD

City Of Women (Jimi Tenor & Edward Vesala)City Of Women II ... LP
Sahko (Finland), 1998. New Copy ... $18.99
Very fluid, freewheeling sounds from this Finnish quintet – material recorded relatively early in the career of some of the musicians, and already showing a tremendous ear for the sorts of fresh styles they'd create in years to come! The group is co-led by Jimi Tenor and Edward Vesala – both of whom produce – and the music is a mix of improvised jazz, electronics, and some very cool production effects – all used in ways that are looser and with more edge than some of the other sides of the Scandinavian scene were handling with jazz during the same generation. Tenor plays flute, tenor, and other instruments – Vesala handles drums and other instruments too – and the group also features a bit of harp from Iro Haarla, programming from Jimi Sumen, and instrument design and construction from Matti Knaapi. Titles include "Sergei", "Auloharp", "Ball Bearing", "Dumpster Diving", "Heat Birth", and "Dangerous Crossing". LP, Vinyl record album
