✨✧ AhnnuWorld Music/Perception ... LP
Leaving, 2015. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A pair or hazy, abstract records by Ahnnu – World Music and Perception – in 2LP package from the adventurous Leaving label! World Music is a previously cassette-only set with remixes by Matthewdavid, Andrew Pekler, Nerftoss, Fumitake Tamura (aka Bun), and EMV. Perception is a loosely atmospheric set of aural soundscapes, a heady headphones experience that's as mesmerizing as anything we've heard on Leaving, walking the line between experimental beathead material and more experimental sounds. Includes "Gala", "Shame", "Solo", "Ghillie In The Mist", "Relative Research", "Ballast", "Found", "Mirror", "Scaling", "Informant", "The Racer", "Elastic", "Multibody", "Gala (Matthewdavid Remix)", "Sugar In The Dark", "Paia", "Monica/Swept", "Found (Fumitake Tamura 'Bun' Remix)" and more. Herb AlpertHerb Alpert Reimagines The Tijuana Brass Music Vol 3 ... CD
Herb Alpert, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
Herb Alpert remakes himself again – taking all the best tunes from his classic years on A&M records, then fitting them to contemporary grooves – all at a level that's a bit like some of the Verve Remixed projects from years back, but even better! These aren't remixes, but new versions – as Herb blows strong trumpet lines over the top of beats, keyboards, and other contemporary elements – all while keeping that Tijuana Brass punch in his horn, on versions of "Whipped Cream", "Spanish Flea/Rise", "The Lonely Bull", "El Presidente", "Spanish Harlem", "Green Peppers", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Bittersweet Samba". Warp (UK), 1998. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
The Warp debut from the Boards of Canada, and only the second full length LP from the duo, though they had issued numerous CDs up to this point in their career. Warm electronics that transcends the IDM tag, and elevates them above the crowded peerage of bedroom laptop wizards. 17 tracks in all, including "Wildlife Analysis", "An Eagle In Your Mind", "The Color Of The Fire", "Telephasic Workshop", "Triangles & Rhombuses", "Sixtyten", "Kaini Industries", "Bocuma", "Roygbiv", "Rue The Whirl", "Aquarius", "Olson", "Pete Standing Alone", "Smoke Quantity", "Open The Light" and "One Very Important Thought". ✨✧ HUWMusic From The Multiverse ... CD
Ropeadope, 2017. Used ... $2.99
The cover's got a couple of monkeys playing the music – but the sound here actually comes from bothers Mike and Aaron Dolton – the first of whom plays the drums, the latter who seems to handle just about everything else! Their music is a blend of jazz and soul – sometimes with the kind of future elements you'd guess from the image, sometimes more understated – in a good fit with the more sensitive lyrics of the album's range of different singers – who include Jube (Julie Clarkson), Bennett Holland, Sid M, and Jamie Paul. A few tracks are instrumental – with more of a focus on the sax and drums – and titles include "Baskerville", "Last Minute", "Already Home", "Midnight", "Foot Down", "Flow State", and "Thank You". Rongetz FoundationAlphabet City Music Club ... LP
Brooklyn Butterfly, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
We've loved these guys since the start, but this time around they really seem to be knocking it out of the park – fusing their fantastic blend of funky jazz and contemporary soul with a fresher vibe than they've ever had before! These guys draw on plenty of classic elements, but never sound like a retro group at all – as they've got this bold spirit and forward-thinking energy that bristles with positivity, and really marks their music right from the start. The singers get some really great space in the spotlight this time around – a lineup that includes Vanisha Gould, Alina Engibaryan, Mr Day, and Vuyo Sotashe – plus rapper Lewis Parker. Rongetz plays trumpet, produced, and arranged – and instrumentation includes some great keyboards and organ, plus tenor, alto, and flute. Tracks include "The Tour Song", "Clapping Your Soul", "Funky Fancy NYC", "Death Of A Music Box", "Success Success", "Murky Park", and "Somehow Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Hajime YoshizawaMusic From The Edge Of The Universe ... CD
Geneon (Japan), 2005. Used ... $17.99
Hajime calls this one Music From The Edge Of The Universe – but heck, we're just happy that it got to us all the way from Japan! The set is easily his greatest work ever – a beautiful blend of cosmic rhythms and warmer Latinized touches – in a mode that has the crackling broken beats of earlier years dancing with a strong influence from Brazil – a sound that's warmly seductive and extremely soulful throughout! Most tracks are still aimed strongly at the dancefloor, but there's a more spacious vibe here that makes the album equally a pleasure to listen to as to groove to – a jazzier sensibility that comes through especially nicely on a few of the album's instrumental tracks. Vocalists include Bird, Vanessa Freeman, Face, Catia, and Akiko – and titles include "Crescent Moon", "Rise Me Up", "Keep It Movin", "Beyond The Sunshine", "Favourite Vital Kiss", "Arpegio In The Forest", "Verao No Ar", "Waltz For Jason", "Impulse", and "The Room". DJ Spun & Dhyan MollerAcid Experience (3LP set) ... LP
Still Music, Mid 90s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99
The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene – which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks! The music was originally done straight to cassette – which creates this nicely compressed sound that takes us back to the fidelity of early Trax Records 12" singles – whose stiff, crispy quality turned out to be a perfect fit for the acid house years! These tunes definitely live up to a Chicago acid mode – very spare, very minimal, with no vocals at all – and while we might miss some of the tweakier analogue keyboard lines from our favorite acid cuts, these numbers more than make up for that with a spaced-out hypnotic feel. Titles include "Grace", "Acid707", "Build Ah Bridge", "One", "DJ Spun Acid Experience", "UR Wild & Crazy", "The Other Space Ship", "Loan Me Your Spaceship Man", and "JMD A Newer One". AntibalasTalkatif ... CD
Ninja Tune, 2002. Used ... $5.99
Stunning Afro Funk from this incredible combo – as great as anything from the 70s, and maybe even better! The album's the second full length release from New York's Antibalas Liberation Orchestra – and like the first, it's an insanely wonderful batch of funk tunes that follows fiercely in the Fela tradition. Choppy guitars meet with chunky rhythms, riffing keyboards, staccato horns, and a deep commitment to rootsy production – one that keeps the sound of the record firmly in the classic mode, without any fancy remix touches of house music beats. The album's amazing – the sort you could easily pass off as a rare gem you find digging through the crates in Lagos – but it's even better than that, because these guys are young, alive, and headed to your town soon for a concert! Titles include "Talkatif", "Hypocrite", "World Without Fear", "War Is A Crime", and "NESTA 75". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) CD

Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) CD

Beady BelleDedication ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Beady Belle never lets us down – and even though the lady's been making music for well over a decade, she still turns out some of the most consistently thoughtful soul we can think of! Forget the fact that the singer's on a Norwegian label, as the lyrics here are all in English, backed by warmly jazzy instrumentation that's always made Beady's music hugely popular with our customers for American neo-soul – and which puts her in the same territory as other classic "in the know" artists, such as Monday Michiru or Incognito! The keyboards are especially nice this time around – as thoughtful as the lyrics and the vocals – and titles include "I Run You Ragged", "Hold Your Breath", "Traces", "Dedication", "Waste Of Grace", "Last Drop Of Blood", "Can You Smile", and "Out Of Orbit". Benny SingsCity Pop ... CD
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 9.99
We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. Titles include "Familiar", "Not Enough", "Duplicate", "Dreamin", "Summerlude", "Everything I Know", and "Nakameguro". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) CD

Mario BiondiBrasil (with bonus track) ... CD
Sony (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic new setting for the magnificent voice of Mario Biondi – a set that has the Italian crooner working alongside co-producer Kassin – who helps give Mario this very groovy take on Brazilian music! The style is mostly upbeat and soulful – a bit like the grooves on early albums by Ed Motta – but there's also plenty of the inventive touches we love in the music of Kassin – a great balance that keeps things from ever sounding too commercial, even though the songs are all pretty darn catchy! Biondi sings in both English and Portuguese – and although the whole album is a real change from his jazz-based work, it's completely delightful – and we hope the start of more music like this! Titles include "Take Me To The Stars", "Devotion", "Upside Down", "Sophia", "It's You I'll Always Love", "Luiza", "Mundo Coloridao", and a version of "Smooth Operator" with guest work by Till Bronner! CD features the bonus track "Rivederti". CD

Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
The title's a great one for this album by Blundetto – given that the groove is beautifully deep, and the music moves at a pace that would make it hard to do anything but dance slow! Yet the set's not a sleepy one – as it's got all the richness and complexity of previous Blundetto efforts, and show the continuing evolution to dubbier corners of the musical spectrum explored on the past few records – a revision of Jamaican roots, but with a sound that's never standard reggae at all – despite guest appearances from Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, and others. Titles include "Good Ol Days", "My Weed My Queen", "Passed The Worst", "Have A Little Faith", "Story Never Told", "Colombette", "Chamber Dub", "History Dance", and "Satta". CD

BosqLove & Resistance (with download) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $15.99 19.98
Maybe the strongest album so far from Bosq – and certainly one of the most wide-ranging too – given that the group have a strong global bent to their groove, and they've also made space for a host of guest stars who include Nicole Willis, Bruno Morais, Monolog, and Kaleta! The music is every bit as funky as before, but there's also a nice criss-crossing of elements from Brazilian music, Afro Funk, and even a bit of contemporary house – served up with just the right sort of variety to match the moods of the guest stars. It's great to hear Nicole Willis on the clubby tracks "Take Me There" and "Tonight" – and other titles include "Feel It", "Can't Seem To Hide", "Com Force", "Alode", "In Orbit", "The Love", and "Pegate Pa Ca". Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". DJ International, 1985. Very Good ... $4.99
A real classic from Chip E – maybe not always the strongest of the early Chicago house music pioneers, but a great talent here – with a wonderfully soulful vibe! Female lead vocals make the tune a fuller, richer one than it might be from just the stark handclap beats and basslines – and Lidell Townsell handles the house remix, which is superb – and really shows his strong ear for a vamping trancing groove! Cinematic OrchestraTo Believe ... CD
Domino, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 13.98
As longtime fans might know, the Cinematic Orchestra isn't a large ensemble, but a duo – yet the pair also have this fantastic way of creating a really spacious sound in their music – thanks in part to a very open door when it comes to creative guests! This time around, there's some fantastic voice in the lead – singers who really help give the music a very rich shape, including Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Tawiah, Heidi Vogel, and Grey Reverend – who add lyrics to most of the songs on the album, while the duo of Jason Swinscoe and Dominic Smith help keep the focus on the large instrumental landscape, which receives some fantastic light touches from the genius of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson this time around. It's been a while since the last project from the group – but if anything, the break has only seemed to help deepen their sound. Titles include "To Believe", "A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life", "A Promise", "Zero One/This Fantasy", "The Workers Of Art", and "Wait For Now/Leave The World". CD

AstronauticaDeath Valley ... CD
Alpha Pup, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 12.98
Death Valley is emblazoned on the cover, and portrayed inside the CD gatefold too – but the music here is more cosmic than earthy – served up in these warm washes of electro elements that are totally great – dreamily tripping over the landscape in a laidback yet soulful sort of way! Edrina Martinez Sanchez created all the sounds here – and although she does sing a bit, the vocals are usually processed down in the mix – leaving the beats, keyboards, and electronics to provide most of the soulful scope of the sound. Titles include "California Roll", "Reasons", "Racetracks", "Sand & Fog", "I've Never Been", "Mahogany", and "Palms". CD

City Of Women (Jimi Tenor & Edward Vesala)City Of Women II ... LP
Sahko (Finland), 1998. New Copy ... $18.99
Very fluid, freewheeling sounds from this Finnish quintet – material recorded relatively early in the career of some of the musicians, and already showing a tremendous ear for the sorts of fresh styles they'd create in years to come! The group is co-led by Jimi Tenor and Edward Vesala – both of whom produce – and the music is a mix of improvised jazz, electronics, and some very cool production effects – all used in ways that are looser and with more edge than some of the other sides of the Scandinavian scene were handling with jazz during the same generation. Tenor plays flute, tenor, and other instruments – Vesala handles drums and other instruments too – and the group also features a bit of harp from Iro Haarla, programming from Jimi Sumen, and instrument design and construction from Matti Knaapi. Titles include "Sergei", "Auloharp", "Ball Bearing", "Dumpster Diving", "Heat Birth", and "Dangerous Crossing". LP, Vinyl record album

Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

Nicola Conte & Spiritual GalaxyLet Your Light Shine On ... CD
MPS (Germany), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99 34.99
Nicola Conte is completely at the top of his game here – showing us yet another level of his mighty jazz-based talents – some deeper spiritual currents than ever before, mixed with a good dose of global influences too! The record has Conte working with a hip Spiritual Galaxy ensemble, filled with key talents from labels that include Schema, Brownswood, and modern Blue Note – artists that are helping redefine the deepest currents of contemporary music, and who seem to soar even farther under the leadership of Nicola! There's vocals on most tracks – from singers who include Bridgette Amofah, Zara McFarlane, Carolina Bubbico, and Zoe Modica – but the album's equally heavy on the instrumental tip – as it includes performances from Logan Richardson on alto, Magnus Lindgren on tenor and flute, Theo Croker on trumpet, Pietro Lussu on keyboards, and Gianluca Petrella on trombone and moog. Most titles are originals, written in close collaboration with members of the group – and titles include "Uhuru Na Umoja", "Cosmic Peace", "Mystic Revelation Of The Gods", "Space Dimensions", "Tribes From The Unknown", "Afro Black", and "Essence Of The Sun".
