Beaujolais BandTalk Talk & More Talk ... LP
Acid Jazz (UK), 1993. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Nice work by one of the straighter groups on the Acid Jazz label – a tight little combo led by vibist Roger Beaujolais, and featuring instrumentation that includes piano, organ, and lots of percussion! The groove here has plenty of nice Latin touches – none too heavy, but in a good retro-styled mode. Titles include a nice jazz dance take on "Milestones", plus "Compassion", "The New World", "Third Man", "Riffin For Cal", and "Sister Grace". (Jazz, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Chris BowdenTime Capsule ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". Da LataBirds ... CD
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". CD

Family AtlanticaCosmic Unity (with bonus download) ... LP
Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $22.99
The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Titles include "Baiao Infinito", "Near The Ocean", "Efik", "Cosmic Unity", "Canto De Pilon", "El Rio", "Cacao", "Okoroba", and "Neti Neti". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Fat Jon The Ample Soul PhysicianWave Motion (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Young Heavy Souls, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $31.99 32.98
An early classic solo jam from Fat Jon – one of our favorite underground hip hop beat wizards in the immediate post millennium – and a more than ample effort that still sounds great today! Combining his Dyslexic and Stasis EPs, it features a trademark batch Fat Jon's chilled out hip hop excursions into the realm of jazzy tone science. The beats here are fairly straight forward and snap nicely to keep it in head nodding territory, but his signature atmospheric production style is still floating nicely over the filtered basslines and crisp drum loops. Includes "Where?", "Feel The Void", "Visual Music", "For Stress", 'Wet Secrets", "Automated Life Machines" and "Surrection". 2019 version includes a couple extra tracks: "Trust You" and "Rain Dance Instrumental". Bryony Jarman-PintoCage & Aviary ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $20.99 21.99
Very cool work from Bryony Jarman-Pinto – a singer who's way more than just a singer – partly because she often uses the studio to harmonize alongside herself, which brings a very hip vibe to her sound! Bryony's maybe tied most strongly to jazz, but there's a heck of a lot going on here too – straighter soul lyrics overall, often with a vibe that's personal and positive – given a kick by skittish drums, unusual keyboard lines, light colors from acoustic guitar, and some guest sax lines from Ben Watt! The lead vocal often has this inflection that emphasizes some jazz roots, even though the music is never straight jazz at all – and there's a very special, very compelling quality to the record that makes us think we'll be hearing a lot more from Bryony in years to come. Titles include "Threads", "Sour Face", "All About Life", "Sun Kissed", "Sweet Sweet", "As I've Heard", "Saffron Yellow", and "Day Dream". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JhelisaWhirl Keeps Turning (radio edit, voc, Outside rmx)/Secret Place (drum & bass) (CD single) ... CD
Dorado (UK), 1994. Used ... $0.99
More in the acid jazz vein than some of her great laster NuSoul efforts, but still a wonderful single, with a slick jazzy feel that reminds us nicely of the mid 90s. The Outside mix gives it a jazzier spin, that we really dig, while "Secret Place" moves at a tempo that's a shade too slow for our taste. (Neo Soul, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Natalia LafourcadeHasta La Raiz ... CD
Sony, 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really wonderful record from this up-and-coming singer – a set that features Spanish language lyrics throughout, but has this universal appeal right from the very first note! Natalia's got a way of crossing generations and styles with her music – a bit like some of the best creative work we've dug from Brazil in recent years, from artists like Kassin and some of his contemporaries. And the retro look of the cover is well-placed – because this is classic stuff that's very different from other contemporary Latin pop, and which has currents of jazz, bossa, and other warmer styles in the music – all a perfect match for Lafourcade's dreamy voice! Titles include "Vamanos Negrito", "Para Que Sufrir", "Hasta La Raiz", "Lo Que Construimos", "Estoy Lista", and "No Mas Lllorar". (Latin, New Grooves) CD

Monday MichiruNexus ... CD
Artist Share, 2008. New Copy ... $12.99
Brilliant work from Monday Michiru – one of her jazziest records to date, and one of her most soulful too! There's a really deep feel going on here – light years past the basic soul and dancefloor grooves that Monday was cutting a decade ago, with a musically evolved sound that's really tremendous – as full and rich as it is simple and straightforward – filled with righteous themes and that extremely positive vibe we've always loved in Monday's music! The keyboards on the record are handled by Dave Kikoski on a number of tracks – really warm and fluid, and wrapping up Michiru's vocals wonderfully – and other instrumentation includes acoustic bass, trumpet, and some earthy percussion, which makes for a nice contrast with the Fender Rhodes on some tracks. The record's one that makes us proud we've been following Monday's work for so many years – really pleased to see it coming this far forward! Titles include "Genetic Imprints", "Sands Of Time", "On & On", "Weak", "Your Eyes", "Candy", "Sometimes", "Suite 610", and "Epiphany". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ MokadiHuman Natures ... CD
Perfect Toy (Germany), 2004. Used ... $2.99
A nice amalgam of club beats, funky fusion and jazz groove from Mokadi – another fine record from the ever-reliable Perfect Toy label! The group is centered around the lovely vocals of Dita von Aster, and wonderful work on keys by Ralph Kiefer, who worked similar magic with Hipnosis. There's a genuine group vibe to the proceedings, too – which lends the groove an appeal that stretches well beyond the club jazz/dancefloor circuit! This record will sit well with similarly strong albums on labels like Compost and Schema! Tracks include "Voodoo Chant", "Human Natures", "My Favorite Things", "A 1000 Times", "Always Now", "Butterflies", "Rock The House" and more! CD

MoppySeven Wonders Of The Sea ... LP
606/YHS, 2018. Near Mint- 2LP ... $13.99
A trip through seven wonders of far-reaching beathead bliss from Detroit via Chicago producer Moppy – – with guest production and/or instrumentation from Kenny Keys, Radius Inc, Beyond Luck, DJ Kana and more! We knew from the first track we were in for something special, with the opener "King Abubakari II Sets Sail" coasting from bubbly, blissful atmoshere to steady electro soul jazz, to spacey beatcraft and abstract instrumental hip hop in the stretch of its 9 minutes, and it's hypnotic throughout – and the record just gets more diverse yet consistent from there. A real gem! "Sailing The Worldly Winds", "Subsea Intervention", "The Travels Of IBN Battura", "Egypt To Greece", "Search For Atlantis" and "The Seventh Wonder". LP, Vinyl record album

Natural Yogurt BandAway With Melancholy (LP sleeve edition – limited edition with bonus tracks) ... CD
Jazzman/Now Again, 2008. Used ... $6.99
One of the hippest non-reissue records we've heard so far from the Jazzman Records empire – a massive set of grooves with a really odd sort of feel! Natural Yogurt Band work in spare, funky territory – serving up some very heavy drums (played by Wayne Fullwood, formerly of Little Barrie) – mixed with a range of other instrumental bits that include vibes, electric piano, and some really rumbling bass! There's definitely an influence here from cinematic funk – particularly that of the Italian soundtrack variety – but the group also have a sound that's hardly retro funk at all – more of a fresh, 21st Century pastiche of the range of underground influences that have been bubbling under for years in the Jazzman scene – brought to focus in a set of instrumentals with a really mindblowing sound! Titles include "Latin Illusion", "Chapter One", "Chit Chat", "Better Days To Come", "A Broken Rose", "Lament For Piano", "Space Echo", "Soft Cheese", and "The Woods". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD

Reel PeopleRetroflection Remixed ... CD
Reel People (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The warmly collaborative spirit of the original album – with guest vocals by Angie Stone, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, Omar and others – makes this kind of a companion piece a natural fit. The remixers wisely hew to the gliding soul with jazzy touches that make Retroflection such a strong, standout work, while bringing in elements of club soul, jazzy samba, and timeless disco, depending on the producer/remixer. Titles include "Don't Stop The Music (Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix)", "I Want To Thank You (Sebb Junior Remix)", "Thinking About Your Love (Da Brownie Remix)", "Keep It Up (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)", "I'm In Love (Buscrates Remix)", "Buttercup (Terry Hunter Main Club Mix", "Always There (Scott Diaz Funk Excursion)", and "Can We Pretend (Tall Black Guy Samba Remix)". ✨✧ Ronin Arkestra (Mark De Clive-Lowe)Sonkei ... LP
Albert's Favourites (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An Arkestra performance, but one that's headed up by Mark De Clive-Lowe – who wrote all the material, and produced the record too – as a great extension of some of the more spiritual directions he's been taking in his own music in recent years! The group have a sound that definitely lives up to the spiritual jazz reference you might expect from their name – building nicely on waves of piano and keyboards from Mark, with excellent work from other ensemble members on tenor, flute, alto, trumpet, and guitar – all soaring to the skies in a great 21st Century take on 70s spiritual jazz modes! There's a number of drummers on the record, and there's no rhythm programs listed – save for "fx" and "live electronics" in the credits – but it feels as if there might be a slight current of beats amidst the live instrumentation from time to time. Not that any of that gets in the way of the sound – which is tightly focused and soaring to the skies, on tracks that include "Fallen Angel", "Tempestuous Temperaments", "Cosmic Collisions", "Lullabies Of The Lost", "Elegy Of Entrapment", and "The Art Of Altercation". ✨✧ St GermainBoulevard ... CD
F Communications (France), 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Finally repressed! This is the classic first album by St Germain – aka Ludovic Navarre – issued here with the "complete series" of tracks from the original effort. Like St Germain's huge-selling Tourist effort for Blue Note, this one's a great batch of jazzy club grooves – basing its vibe on a classic 70s sound, but adding in some great modern French house touches to pump up the beat a bit more. Titles include "Deep In It", "Thank U Mum", "What's New?", "Easy To Remember", "Sentimental", "Street Scene", and "Forget It". Released in 1995, but still pretty darn fresh! CD

✨✧ Smokin The JazzSome Jazzy Steez ... CD
Loud Minority (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $26.99
A sharp second set from this up-and-coming Japanese combo – one of the few to really find the right combination between jazz and hip hop, and deliver the music without any sense of cliche at all! These guys take things backwards from a jazz sample generation of hip hop – adding in more live instrumentation to the music, while also relying on samples and beats – all mostly in an instrumental mode, although a few tracks feature guest vocals from Ohga, Rags, Blizzy B, and Madoka Yamasaki. The set is more jazz with hip hop production and rhythms, than it is instrumental hip hop – and titles include "Rain Dance", "We Walk With Lions", "Yellow Moon Comes (part 2)", "Come To My Melody", "Summer Vibez", "Gon Get Funky", and "Self Love". Zero CrossingMy Kinda Funk ... CD
Perfect Toy (Germany), 2005. Used ... $1.99
The first full length set from Zero Crossing – an album of stark electronics and jagged rhythms that follows nicely in the spirit of their earlier singles! The sound here is definitely steeped in some of the colder waves coming from the German scene of late – that style that's explored more heavily by Compost and Sonar Kollektiv in the 21st Century, a real move away from warmer jazz influences into a groove that mixes 80s experimentalism with influences from a wide range of hip hop production. Guests include Kool Keith, Jaymz Nylon, and Ann & Marva Hershey – and titles include "Mindhunter", "Da Game Is On", "Rhythm Of Life", "Darkness", "Interlude B", "Touching You", "Dancin With Brock", "Choose The Moose", and "Nu Funk". VariousBrownswood Bubblers Volume 13 ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Instead, this territory is much richer – plumbed by DJ Gilles Peterson via his Worldwide Radio series, and the always-great work of the Brownswood label – an imprint that's dedicated to finding the best sort of genre-crossing, category-defying music we've always loved here at Dusty Groove! The tracks within are proof that in the right hands, soul, jazz, and other styles know no boundaries – or limits of imagination – on cuts that include "Ley Lines" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Nuketown" by Tiana Khasi, "Something My Heart Trusts" by Yazmin Lacey, "Ideas" by Sonnymoon, "No White God" by Oscar #Worldpeace, "Move" by Lynda Dawn, "Sailor" by Wu Lu feat Binisa Bonner, "Only Trying 2 Tell U" by Puma Blue, "Jury Judge Executioner" by Alxnder London, and "Continue The Fun (space version)" by Mauskovic Dance Band.
