U-NamEssential Collection ... CD
Skytown, Late 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $7.99
A strong overview of recent sounds from U-Nam – one of the few contemporary guitarists to inherit the best 70s styles of artists like George Benson or David T Walker – and a set that also features a few new titles too! Like both of those jazz giants, U-Nam has a way of playing with a very chromatic approach – as strong in tone as he is deft on the strings – often in a nicely-blocked way that makes for a very soulful sound that almost makes you think you're hearing a vocal along with the tunes. The guitar sings out strongly – amidst new titles that include "Soul Breeze" and "Let The Music Play" – and other U-Nam favorites that include "Throwback Kid", "Keep The Faith", "Something's Up", "Street Life", "Going For Miles", "Back In Style", "Risin To The Top", "Breezin MA", and "Smoovin". James DaySong Soul Spirit (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
James Day Songs, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
James Day has always been one heck of a collaborative fellow – but this time around, he seems to be even more so than ever – as the album's overflowing with an insane amount of guests artists – a huge lineup that includes Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Audrey Wheeler, Glenn Jones, Sandra St Victor, Karen Bernod, Lalah Hathaway, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Maysa, and others – soul singers both classic and contemporary, coming together here to bring a very joyous vibe to James' music! Many numbers feature more than one singer, creating a trading of vocals that really gives the record a lot of warmth – while Day handles the production and songwriting, sometimes with help from the other artists. Titles include "No Son Of Mine", "Forgiveness", "Battlegrounds", "Stand On My Shoulders", "Who Can Tell The Heart", "It's All Divine (Boogie Back mix)", and "Speak Love". CD features two tracks not on the digital version – "Dreamland" and "We Dance (Cool Million mix)". CD

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Esso! Afrojam FunkbeatEsso! Afrojam Funkbeat ... CD
Esso! Afrojam Funkbeat, 2015. New Copy ... $6.99 9.98
Sweet work from a great Chicago combo – one who go way past the usual grooves you might expect from an ensemble of this nature! Sure, these guys have "Afro" in their name, but they don't just play Fela-styled sounds – and instead step into a warm, wide range of sounds – all of which they do incredibly well! There's a touch of Brazilian elements on the guitars at points, and some deeper contemporary soul on the great vocals from Vivian Garcia – a singer who really adds a lot to the music when she steps into the spotlight – and the group even play around with some more Caribbean influences from time to time, keeping things freshly diverse, but never in a way that sounds unplanned or out of control. Titles include "La Lluvia", "Locas", "Uno Somos Todos", "Sabrosa", "Esso Strut", and "Iwbwu". (Global Grooves, Neo Soul) CD

Girl Named NinoMoonlight Daughter ... CD
Moonlight Daughter, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99 15.00
Captivating, genre-defying indie soul from Girl Named Nino – a girl originally from Tbilisi, Georgia who has long called the Chicago area home, has a sound as far reaching as her travels, but it still feels intimate and personal! Her voice is front-and-center throughout Moonlight Daughter, in both the vocals and in the distinctive songcraft, and it's strong on both fronts. As a singer, she has a way of balancing classic jazz vocal influences with more modern soul, global/multi-lingual pop and even a bit of hip hop. Likewise with the songs and the production. Nino and partner Pablo Gordy – who together handle all of the writing, arranging, production and instrumentation – have this knack for layering styles and sounds, but with such strong songwriting core, they can no doubt play even the most lushly-produced songs here in a stripped down setting without losing the heart and soul of it. Titles include "Moonlight Daughter (Flowers To The Moon)", "Whiskey & Cigarettes (Chaser)", "Little Lady (Keep Your Lights On)", "Four Letter Words (Siren)", "The Revolution (Lost At The Bazaaar)", "Jukebox Joint (Heard You, Watched You)", "As We Love (Asa Nisi Masa", "Valentine" and "Deda (Mother)". Blood OrangeNegro Swan ... CD
Domino, 2018. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
The cover of this album by Blood Orange – aka Devonte Hynes – might imply a sort of weary bleakness – but given the quality of the music, the whole thing can't help but elevate our spirits – even if Hynes is digging even deeper than usual with his subject matter! The songs are complex and extremely thoughtful – but also have this really inspired glow that instantly illuminates their beauty – sometimes in ways that are fragile, other times with a more dynamic energy. And although the set's got a host of guests – like Georgia Anne Muldrow, A$ap Rocky, Project Pat, and others – it's clear that Devonte's guiding the ship himself, with a very strong hold on the rudder, and the spirit of the music. Titles include "Orlando", "Saint", "Charcoal Baby", "Nappy Wonder", "Dagenham Dream", "Minetta Creek", "Nappy Wonder", and "Runnin". CD

Robert Glasper ExperimentRobert Glasper x KAYTRANADA – The ArtScience Remixes (180 gram pressing) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Capitol, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99
A cool record of remixes, and one that almost folds together the Artscience modes of Robert Glasper with his earlier Black Radio project! The set features heavy contributions from Kaytranada – who adds in fresh rhythm programs to most of the cuts, in ways that open up Glasper's sublime work on piano and keyboards – with guest help from Talib Kweli, Alex Isley, and Iman Omari! The set's got 8 tracks in all – more of an EP than a single – and titles include Kaytranada remixes of "Thinkin Bout You", "Written In Stone", "Find You", "Name Drop Interlude", "No One Like You", and "Day To Day". Alicia KeysDiary Of Alica Keys ... CD
J Records, 2003. Used ... $1.99
Don't write Alicia Keys off simply because she's a pop princess! This second album might sit at the top of the charts for six months, or it may falter quickly and be seen a "sophmore slump" – but whether you see clips on Access Hollywood or not, this Diary is pretty nice to our ears! Diary Of Alicia Keys finds the piano playing, jaw-droppingly beautiful chanteuse rocking a more outwardly hip hop feel on the best tracks, particularly the probable singles "You Don't Know My Name" (with production by Chicago's favorite son Kayne West) and "Heartburn" (with Timbaland on the beats). But the girl is by no means simply a typical prefab Clive Davis hitmaker – she wrote or co-wrote most of the music here, and she's the top billed producer on most of it, too. Alicia isn't re-inventing the wheel here, and her lyrics aren't the most deeply-thoughtful introspection you'll find out there (especially for an album with the word "diary" in the title), but there's no denying the soul, or the endearing catchiness of the hooks & beats! Other tracks include "Karma", "If I Ain't Got You", "When You Really Love Someone", "Diary" (with Toni!Tony!Tone!), "Slow Down" and more. CD

Lee2 + 2 = 5 ... CD
Lee, 2017. Used ... $5.99
Lee may not know his math, but he sure knows how to give us some great music – both back when he was working as the Square Egg, and now when he's out under his own name too! The man's a one man force in underground soul – a very creative songwriter and sharp-edged producer who's always out to make music that's a cut above the rest, and which doesn't fall into some of the easier labels and categories of the current soul underground! This time around, there's a vocal chorus working with Lee on some of the tracks – which creates an uplifting vibe and positivity that's even a bit different from his previous records. The album's got a good structure overall – with interludes balanced between the fuller tracks – and a sense of timing between the moods that really makes the whole thing work well together. Titles include "Drowning", "Extranjero", "More Than You Know", "Where Are You", "Drive", "Heroes", and "2 + 2 = 5". CD
