U-NamEssential Collection ... CD
Skytown, Late 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $11.99
A strong overview of recent sounds from U-Nam – one of the few contemporary guitarists to inherit the best 70s styles of artists like George Benson or David T Walker – and a set that also features a few new titles too! Like both of those jazz giants, U-Nam has a way of playing with a very chromatic approach – as strong in tone as he is deft on the strings – often in a nicely-blocked way that makes for a very soulful sound that almost makes you think you're hearing a vocal along with the tunes. The guitar sings out strongly – amidst new titles that include "Soul Breeze" and "Let The Music Play" – and other U-Nam favorites that include "Throwback Kid", "Keep The Faith", "Something's Up", "Street Life", "Going For Miles", "Back In Style", "Risin To The Top", "Breezin MA", and "Smoovin". James DaySong Soul Spirit (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
James Day Songs, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
James Day has always been one heck of a collaborative fellow – but this time around, he seems to be even more so than ever – as the album's overflowing with an insane amount of guests artists – a huge lineup that includes Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Audrey Wheeler, Glenn Jones, Sandra St Victor, Karen Bernod, Lalah Hathaway, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Maysa, and others – soul singers both classic and contemporary, coming together here to bring a very joyous vibe to James' music! Many numbers feature more than one singer, creating a trading of vocals that really gives the record a lot of warmth – while Day handles the production and songwriting, sometimes with help from the other artists. Titles include "No Son Of Mine", "Forgiveness", "Battlegrounds", "Stand On My Shoulders", "Who Can Tell The Heart", "It's All Divine (Boogie Back mix)", and "Speak Love". BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Matt CabShunkashito ... CD
Warner (Japan), 2016. Used ... $7.99
Cool, catchy soul from Matt Cab – a soul singer with American roots, but one who's been making much bigger waves recording albums like this for the Japanese scene – where he seems to be creating quite an audience for his music! Matt's got a style that could be huge if he were given bigger chart placement over here – instantly appealing, with a quality that's heartfelt, but never overdone – and a mode that's never trying too hard to be anything other than a kind of hummable, memorable soul with nice crossover potential – especially on the album's midtempo tracks, which might be the most appealing. The album features guest work from Sway, Maco, and Che'Nelle – and titles include "Take My Hand", "Sweet Simplicity", "Castle In The Sky", "Used To Know", "Come Back", "To You", "Call Your Name", and "That Touch". JamiroquaiTravelling Without Moving ... CD
Sony, 1996. Used ... $1.99
A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Titles include "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl", "Everyday", "Alright", "High Times", "Travelling Without Moving", "Spend A Lifetime", "Use The Force", and "Didjital Vibrations". CD also features the bonus track "Do You Know Where You're Coming From". CD

Debra DebsLife Cycles ... CD
Debra Debs/Arts Quest (UK), 2013. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant batch of new millenium soul from Debra Debs! Debra is a London-based, Cameroon-born singer, and Life Cycles is the first full length effort we've heard from her, but it leaves us with little doubt that she'll be around for years to come. This is some of the nicest indie soul we've heard in a while! Her voice is warm and inviting, and she's get a deft hand for memorable songwriting, too – bearing the influence of some of the finer voices of the neo soul generation, as well as the jazzy soul voices of the classic era. The production is flavored by timeless keys and beats, and lots of lightly jazzy instrumental touches. Excellent stuff! Includes "Caught Up", "Clear My Name", "Love Galore", "Fizzy Lemonade" (plus a Felo Le Tee remix) "Daddy", "Blew Your Mind", "Sometimes", "Chasing Dreams", "Blending Colours", "Awake With You", "Africa 'Higher Higher'" feat P. Jericho and "Speeches". CD

Lee2 + 2 = 5 ... CD
Lee, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99
Lee may not know his math, but he sure knows how to give us some great music – both back when he was working as the Square Egg, and now when he's out under his own name too! The man's a one man force in underground soul – a very creative songwriter and sharp-edged producer who's always out to make music that's a cut above the rest, and which doesn't fall into some of the easier labels and categories of the current soul underground! This time around, there's a vocal chorus working with Lee on some of the tracks – which creates an uplifting vibe and positivity that's even a bit different from his previous records. The album's got a good structure overall – with interludes balanced between the fuller tracks – and a sense of timing between the moods that really makes the whole thing work well together. Titles include "Drowning", "Extranjero", "More Than You Know", "Where Are You", "Drive", "Heroes", and "2 + 2 = 5". CD
