✨✧ U-NamSurface Level ... CD
Skytown, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The grooves here go way past the surface level – mighty deep overall, and served up in that fantastic mix of jazzy fusion and club that we love so much from U-Nam! The guitarist just seems to get better and better with each new recording – mixing a 70s style of George Benson soloing with well-crafted rhythms that are never too over the top, and which never force the groove so much that U-Nam can't find space to do his own thing! The style's almost like an instrumental version of Incognito, although with more of a jazzy solo instrumental vibe – and titles include "Back In Style", "Mary Jane", "Groove Paradise", "Going For Miles", "Surface Level", and West Indeed". James DaySong Soul Spirit (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
James Day Songs, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
James Day has always been one heck of a collaborative fellow – but this time around, he seems to be even more so than ever – as the album's overflowing with an insane amount of guests artists – a huge lineup that includes Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Audrey Wheeler, Glenn Jones, Sandra St Victor, Karen Bernod, Lalah Hathaway, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Maysa, and others – soul singers both classic and contemporary, coming together here to bring a very joyous vibe to James' music! Many numbers feature more than one singer, creating a trading of vocals that really gives the record a lot of warmth – while Day handles the production and songwriting, sometimes with help from the other artists. Titles include "No Son Of Mine", "Forgiveness", "Battlegrounds", "Stand On My Shoulders", "Who Can Tell The Heart", "It's All Divine (Boogie Back mix)", and "Speak Love". CD features two tracks not on the digital version – "Dreamland" and "We Dance (Cool Million mix)". CD

✨✧ James DayRepertoire ... CD
James Day Songs, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The repertoire here is as great as the lineup – positive, upbeat soul songs all written by James Day – and performed with help from a huge cast of talent from the contemporary and classic soul underground – including Maysa, U-Nam, Glenn Jones, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Donnie, Audrey Wheeler, Tony Terry, Cool Million, Gavin Christopher, and others! Some of these are folks we haven't heard in years – and certainly not in a setting this great – as Day works with U-Nam, who co-produced the set, in a mode that's got the same warm mix of classic and contemporary that you'd find in the best music by Incognito! Titles include "Considered Delivered", "We Dance", "Don't Waste The Pretty", "Dance Again", "Repertoire", "Rewind", and "RSVP". CD

✨✧ VariousSoul Togetherness 2016 ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wickedly sharp entry in the Soul Togetherness series – and one that maybe features a bit more contemporary material than before! There's a few older tracks from the modern soul years of the late 70s – but most of the work here is contemporary soul from the global underground – brought together in a collection that's especially important, given that the scene has moved so strongly to digital releases and one-off singles! These tracks are partly from that hinterland, and partly from the well-chosen range of cuts that we've come to expect from Expansion Records and DJ Richard Searling – a talent who's been running the Soul Togetherness empire for 30 years, and really knows his way around a track. Titles include "Don't Quit" by Deiphuis & Eastar with Jocelyn Brown, "Sunshine" by Los Charly's Orchestra, "I Got To Party" by SouLutions, "Just Talk To Me (boogie back rmx)" by Tracy Hamlin, "No Limit (ext mix)" by Breakwater, "Stranger (back to the future mix)" by Farina Miss, "Adieu" by Trina Broussard, "I Can Feel It (Soulshy mix)" by Beat Rivals, "Never Loved Nobody" by Puff Johnson, "Lotta Love (ext orig version)" by Nicolette Larson, "What I Done Wrong" by Big Lee Dowell & The Cannonballas, "Just Whatcha Like" by Zo with Joi, "All In The Name Of Love" by Seest, and "You & I (spider edit)" by Ronnie Jones. ✨✧ BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Matt CabShunkashito ... CD
Warner (Japan), 2016. Used ... $6.99
Cool, catchy soul from Matt Cab – a soul singer with American roots, but one who's been making much bigger waves recording albums like this for the Japanese scene – where he seems to be creating quite an audience for his music! Matt's got a style that could be huge if he were given bigger chart placement over here – instantly appealing, with a quality that's heartfelt, but never overdone – and a mode that's never trying too hard to be anything other than a kind of hummable, memorable soul with nice crossover potential – especially on the album's midtempo tracks, which might be the most appealing. The album features guest work from Sway, Maco, and Che'Nelle – and titles include "Take My Hand", "Sweet Simplicity", "Castle In The Sky", "Used To Know", "Come Back", "To You", "Call Your Name", and "That Touch". Future ProspectClimb ... CD
Ropeadope, 2016. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
These guys really live up to the "future" in their name – and serve up a wonderfully soulful version of funky jazz – one that's brimming over with youthful energy, and a strong vision that should guide the group for years to come! The music is almost a reworked version of old school electric jazz funk – but as if the music had taken a trip into space, got its mind blown, then was trying to find a way to live life as normal back at home! Things are straight at first, but often open up into these cosmic corners ones things get going – never in a flashy sort of broken beat way, but just with a new energy that really moves past any sort of stock funk or fusion modes. The group hails from Richmond, and they've got a unique approach that's all their own – and one that's pretty wonderful, too – served up with lots of warm keyboards, bold trumpet lines, and soulful alto and soprano sax – mostly instrumental, but with vocals from Frankie James on one track. Titles include "Dahlia", "Hub", "Almost Gone", "MJ 2.0", "Vibin", "Closer", "First Attempt", and "The Journey" – (Jazz, Neo Soul) CD

✨✧ Aloe BlaccI Need A Dollar (voc, inst)/Take Me Back (voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Stones Throw, 2010. Sealed (pic cover)... $9.99
Do you need a dollar? You just might get one with this stellar and soulful single by Aloe Blacc – rawly produced, memorably composed, and one of the finer underground soul singles of 2010! "I Need A Dollar" may sound familiar – it's the theme song to How To Make It In America on HBO – but that aside, it's a winning single and a sign of the great things to come on Aloe's Good Things LP. He takes a socially conscious tack on the A-side that serves the sound wonderfully. Co-produced and by Jeff Dynamite and Truth & Soul player Leon Michels – the latter providing tight horn arrangements. The flip "Take Me Back" is a more measured funky soul number that's just as excellent. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Debra DebsLife Cycles ... CD
Debra Debs/Arts Quest (UK), 2013. Used ... $11.99
A brilliant batch of new millenium soul from Debra Debs! Debra is a London-based, Cameroon-born singer, and Life Cycles is the first full length effort we've heard from her, but it leaves us with little doubt that she'll be around for years to come. This is some of the nicest indie soul we've heard in a while! Her voice is warm and inviting, and she's get a deft hand for memorable songwriting, too – bearing the influence of some of the finer voices of the neo soul generation, as well as the jazzy soul voices of the classic era. The production is flavored by timeless keys and beats, and lots of lightly jazzy instrumental touches. Excellent stuff! Includes "Caught Up", "Clear My Name", "Love Galore", "Fizzy Lemonade" (plus a Felo Le Tee remix) "Daddy", "Blew Your Mind", "Sometimes", "Chasing Dreams", "Blending Colours", "Awake With You", "Africa 'Higher Higher'" feat P. Jericho and "Speeches". CD

✨✧ Incognito100 Degrees & Rising ... CD
Verve/Suonaphone, 1995. Used ... $1.99
Mid period work from Bluey and Incognito – perhaps slipping a bit from the freshness of their initial albums, but still sounding a heck of a lot better than most of the groups on the market! Like previous sets, this one has a jazzy finish that's blended with a tight NuSoul vibe – the inspiration for many of today's underground acts, and often not done nearly as well as it is here. Titles include "Time Has Come", "Jacob's Ladder", "Barumba", "I Hear Your Name", "After The Fall", "One Hundred & Rising", and "Good Love". CD
