U-NamEssential Collection ... CD
Skytown, Late 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $11.99
A strong overview of recent sounds from U-Nam – one of the few contemporary guitarists to inherit the best 70s styles of artists like George Benson or David T Walker – and a set that also features a few new titles too! Like both of those jazz giants, U-Nam has a way of playing with a very chromatic approach – as strong in tone as he is deft on the strings – often in a nicely-blocked way that makes for a very soulful sound that almost makes you think you're hearing a vocal along with the tunes. The guitar sings out strongly – amidst new titles that include "Soul Breeze" and "Let The Music Play" – and other U-Nam favorites that include "Throwback Kid", "Keep The Faith", "Something's Up", "Street Life", "Going For Miles", "Back In Style", "Risin To The Top", "Breezin MA", and "Smoovin". James DaySong Soul Spirit (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
James Day Songs, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
James Day has always been one heck of a collaborative fellow – but this time around, he seems to be even more so than ever – as the album's overflowing with an insane amount of guests artists – a huge lineup that includes Gordon Chambers, Tony Terry, Audrey Wheeler, Glenn Jones, Sandra St Victor, Karen Bernod, Lalah Hathaway, Trina Broussard, U-Nam, Maysa, and others – soul singers both classic and contemporary, coming together here to bring a very joyous vibe to James' music! Many numbers feature more than one singer, creating a trading of vocals that really gives the record a lot of warmth – while Day handles the production and songwriting, sometimes with help from the other artists. Titles include "No Son Of Mine", "Forgiveness", "Battlegrounds", "Stand On My Shoulders", "Who Can Tell The Heart", "It's All Divine (Boogie Back mix)", and "Speak Love". CD features two tracks not on the digital version – "Dreamland" and "We Dance (Cool Million mix)". CD

SowecoKeep On ... CD
Skytown, 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
Soweco is just a trio, but one that comes across with the fullness of a classic combo from years back – particularly the sorts of blue-eyed soul groups from the end of the 70s! Singer Fredric Frosche Renmark has a great range, and this warmly gliding style to his vocals – which are set up over jazzy keyboards by Mattias Roos and drums from Peter Gustafsson – augmented by other touches in the studio, but also as lean as the lineup might imply! This isn't a contemporary beats and keys project – and instead, the whole thing's got a charm that goes back to the old school. The album's issued on the same label as work by guitarist U-Nam – who guests here on two tracks – and there's definitely the same blend of jazz, soul, and funk going on in the music. Titles include "Keep On", "Forget For A Moment", "Lucky Charm", "Way Up High", "Let The Rain Fall Down", "Your Love", and "By The Sea". CD

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Esso! Afrojam FunkbeatEsso! Afrojam Funkbeat ... CD
Esso! Afrojam Funkbeat, 2015. New Copy ... $6.99 9.98
Sweet work from a great Chicago combo – one who go way past the usual grooves you might expect from an ensemble of this nature! Sure, these guys have "Afro" in their name, but they don't just play Fela-styled sounds – and instead step into a warm, wide range of sounds – all of which they do incredibly well! There's a touch of Brazilian elements on the guitars at points, and some deeper contemporary soul on the great vocals from Vivian Garcia – a singer who really adds a lot to the music when she steps into the spotlight – and the group even play around with some more Caribbean influences from time to time, keeping things freshly diverse, but never in a way that sounds unplanned or out of control. Titles include "La Lluvia", "Locas", "Uno Somos Todos", "Sabrosa", "Esso Strut", and "Iwbwu". (Global Grooves, Neo Soul) CD

Aziza Miller (Linda Williams)Journey Of Love ... CD
Street Jam Groove, 2016. Used ... $4.99
Wonderful work from Aziza Miller – a jazz keyboardist and soul singer with a very deep range of expression – one that comes from her many years in music, which include an important 70s sting as the music director for Natalie Cole, and her own famous album for Arista – recorded under the name of Linda Williams! This set's got a vibe that takes us back to those days – but just in terms of quality, as the music's not retro soul – but instead a beautiful hybrid of Aziza's jazz leanings and soul phrasings – on open-ended tracks that have a great sense of flow, and which change things up nicely as things move on. Aziza plays keyboards and sings on all numbers – and the set's got additional guitar, drums, bass, and percussion – with maybe an initial focus on the instrumentation first on the tunes, then a shift towards the vocals once the song rolls on – a bit like some of the best Larry Mizell productions of the 70s. The package is slim – just an LP-styled sleeve – but the record's got a lot more depth than its presentation might make you expect – on titles that include "A Song For My Friend", "A Journey Of Love", "I Don't Say Much", "Say Yes", "A Brand New Song", and "A Song For Silver" – the last of which is dedicated to Horace Silver! Lee2 + 2 = 5 ... CD
Lee, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99
Lee may not know his math, but he sure knows how to give us some great music – both back when he was working as the Square Egg, and now when he's out under his own name too! The man's a one man force in underground soul – a very creative songwriter and sharp-edged producer who's always out to make music that's a cut above the rest, and which doesn't fall into some of the easier labels and categories of the current soul underground! This time around, there's a vocal chorus working with Lee on some of the tracks – which creates an uplifting vibe and positivity that's even a bit different from his previous records. The album's got a good structure overall – with interludes balanced between the fuller tracks – and a sense of timing between the moods that really makes the whole thing work well together. Titles include "Drowning", "Extranjero", "More Than You Know", "Where Are You", "Drive", "Heroes", and "2 + 2 = 5". CD
