✨✧ Shuya Okino/Root SoulDestiny – Replayed By Root Soul ... LP
Village Again/At Home Sound (Japan), 2014. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful reworking of a wonderful record – as Root Soul take on all the tracks from Shuya Okino's Destiny record – and delivery them with an old school funky club sound! The instrumentation is great – live and very spontaneous, with an energy that takes us back to vintage Salsoul or some of the best Philly club work of the 70s – or a bit like Brand New Heavies at times, especially on the tracks that feature N'Dea Davenport on vocals! That great singer appears on three of the album's excellent tracks – alongside other work from Navasha Daya, Diviniti, and Pete Simpson – who each get a few tracks too. Titles include "Destiny", "Still In Love", "Look Ahead", "Let Nothing Change You", "Deep Into Sunshine", "Holding You Loving You", and "Sun Will Rise". (New Grooves, Neo Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve LacyGemini Rights ... LP
RCA, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Steve Lacy's one of those artists who are really helping to rewrite the sound of soul music for his generation – first by stripping down his sound with some surprisingly simple and effective techniques – and here, building things back up again, but at a level that's very different than music you'd hear from some of his predecessors! In a way, Lacy's found a way to touch on classic soul, but without sounding "classic" at all – getting a bit more confidence in his approach, while still keeping things very personal – a quality that hopefully will not be undone by greater fame or commercial attention! Titles include "Amber", "Sunshine", "Bad Habits", "Buttons", "Mercury", "Static", "Helmet", and "Cody Freestyle". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimetta Rose & The Voices Of CreationHow Good It Is ... LP
Day Dreamer (UK), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jimetta Rose is a fantastic singer on her own, but this set may well be her most heavenly, most righteous record to date – as it features Rose at the head of a larger ensemble of singers – blending gospel structures with soul and spiritual jazz – all with a sound that's completely sublime all the way through! Some of the tunes here are older cuts from the world of soul and jazz, redone in a mode that's nicely different than the originals – with voices moving back and forth, trading lines, and rising together – while light rhythms keep things moving forward, yet never get in the way of the singers on the record. The approach might look like gospel, and the messages here are righteous – but in a way that's also got strong secular soul appeal too. Titles include a great remake of "Spirits Up Above", plus the cuts "Let The Sunshine In", "How Good It Is", "Ain't Life Grand", "Operation Feed Yourself", and "Answer The Call". ✨✧ Sorry DrummerSorry Drummer & Friends ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great batch of Brazilian soul from Sorry Drummer – an artist with a touch that's a lot more open and laidback than some of his contemporaries – much more strongly influenced by American underground hip hop than some of the more booty-shaking beats of the Brazilian mainstream – at a level that makes this whole set come across with a surprisingly timeless, durable vibe! There's a really nice blend of guests here – Sorry Drummer acts as the head of the sound system, opening things up for Filiph Neo, Groove Coletivco, Silvera, Mr Reed, Summer Azul, and even Patricia Marx – as the vibe changes nicely from track to track, while the album still holds onto a great sense of quality throughout. Titles include "If You Let Me", "Slow Down", "Fly Away", "Na Vitrola", "Aeroporto", "Life Is Too Short", "Dias De Sol (rmx)", "Sunshine", and "Yeah Love". CD
