Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ... LP
Motown, 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99 24.98
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". The 9th Wonder produced single "Honey" is an unlisted bonus track. ✨✧ Rhian BensonGold Coast ... CD
DKG Music, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Nice! 14 tracks including "Words Hurt Too", "Say How I Feel", "Stealing My Peace Of Mind", "Soul Boy", "Shake It Away", "A Moment In Shine", "Gold Sky", "Young Girl" and more. CD
(Out of print, digipack case has some edgewear & a sticker remnant on the cover.)

Extra Smooth/P-Vine (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little group – and one with a wonderful talent for bringing together soulful styles in a really catchy way – using bits of funk, ala the Brand New Heavies – but also not afraid to go for a tighter hook, too – in a way that reminds of some of our favorite Japanese-only recordings by Swing Out Sister or Workshy! As with both of those groups, there's a great female singer in the lead – the lovely Maria Enrica Lotesoriere, who also wrote all the lyrics – and arrangements are handled by keyboardist Pippo Lombardo, whose sweet keys really hold together the whole thing nicely. Titles include "Colorado Sky", "Another Smile", "One More Chance", "In The City", "What I Deserve", and "Existence". CD

✨✧ DWH (Deeper Wider Higher)Follow Me ... CD
Counterpoint (UK), 2006. Used ... $4.99
The long awaited debut album from DWH – a UK combo we've been digging on singles, finally stepping into the light with their first full length statement! DWH have a deeply righteous sound that blends together jazz with bits of soul – all served up in a blend that's never forced, and never done with any studio tricks or gimmicks. The style here is really organic – warmly-played soul jazz at the core, on trumpet, vibes, and keyboards – topped with really soulful lyrics by a female singer who reminds us of some of the best vocalists working in the 70s soul jazz years, but who comes across with some slight British soul touches! As with other projects on Counterpoint, there's a real sense of care and sensitivity throughout – just the right balance to give the record a depth that should keep us playing it for years to come. Titles include "Latter Rains", "What Would You Choose", "Soundtrack", "Darkside", "Still Here", "Beauty For Ashes", "Seveneight", and "Broken Peaces". Also includes the remixes "Darkside (Blackbeard rmx)", "Beauty (Eddy & Yanna rmx)", and "Still Here (Antonio Ocasio rmx)". CD

Glydezone, 2017. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Two tracks of funky soul, both served up with a sweet 80s-styled groove – in a perfect pairing of the talents of Ekkah and Dam Funk! There's lots of bottom bass pedal lines on "What's Up" – which creates a percolating funky vibe that's topped with lyrics that just lay into the groove – almost casual in presentation – and a nice contrast to the more upbeat, soaring style of "Space Between Us" – a tune that's almost got a catchy sort of pop soul vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ InternetHive Mind (with bonus download) ... LP
Columbia, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Stunning soul from The Internet – a group who just seem to get better and better with each new record – to the point where we fell in love with this set after hearing just the first few notes! The sound is wonderful – warm, but funky – bottom-heavy, but soaring to the skies with this righteous energy too – completely empowered vocals delivered perfectly by the fantastic Syd – all couched in backings that have conventional elements, but gelled together in this way that's very individual – maybe spaced out a bit around the edges, but never in any sort of sloppy spacey way at all. The whole thing packs a hell of a punch – as you'll discover on tunes that include "Hold On", "Come Together", "Roll (Burbank Funk)", "Bravo", "Stay The Night", "Next Time/Humble Pie", "It Gets Better With Time", "Look What U Started", "La Di Da", and "Come Over". Really mindblowing work from Jose James – an artist we loved right from his very first record, but one who has us completely over the top with this record – a set that may well push James from the soul underground into firmly classic territory – the sort of space that will have the record standing strong with soul classics from decades back, and for a long time to come! Jose's tremendous vocally, but there's also an extra-special spirit to some of these tunes – one that's still very strongly in the hands of the man himself, even though James opens the door for plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Ledisi, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, Aloe Blacc, Lizz Wright, Eric Truffaz, and others – not the kind of guests who overwhelm and take a too-strong turn in the spotlight, but the right sort of addition to the core sound. Titles include a surprisingly great remake of "Just The Way You Are" – plus "Turn Me Up", "I Need Your Love", "Saint James", "Take Me Home", "Oracle", "Feels So Good", "I Found A Love", and "You Know What I Do". Kaina's triumph here is the way she sets up a dreamy mood that holds throughout the album – wherein her layered vocals carry it along as if on a wave – then takes it to an even deeper level thanks to her soulful lyricism. She's got a good creative partner in Sen Morimoto, whose roots in genre defiant jazzy hip hop production are used to such hypnotic effect behind Kaina's beautiful voice. Trevor Lawrence JrRelationships ... CD
Ropeadope, 2017. Used ... $5.99
The title definitely sums up the vibe of the record – because although Trevor Lawrence is the drummer at the core, he's also clearly a hell of a warm personality, too – with a very welcoming vibe that makes the album's array of musicians and guest artists feel right at home! The set's jazz at the core, but with a strong dose of contemporary soul – maybe a bit in the territory of the Robert Glasper Black Radio projects, but with a vibe that's definitely all Trevor's own! The rhythms are rock-solid, and instrumentation often features some mighty sweet keyboards from Kenneth Crouch, Wow Jones, Tabor Gable, and others – alongside other musicians who include Kamasai Washington on tenor, Maurice Mo Betta Brown and Nico Segal on trumpet, Chelsea Baratz and Terrace Martin on saxes, Teodross Avery on tenor, and Nicholas Payton on trumpet. There's just a bit of vocals on the set – sung by Preston Harris, Jimi James, Donna Missal, and oddly LeAnn Rimes – but the instrumental core is what drives the set – on titles that include "Car Vibe", "B Side", "Bring The Party", "The Guts", "11 & 8", "Lovestoned", "Huh", "Alicia's Song", and "Relationships". ✨✧ John Legend & The RootsWake Up ... CD
GOOD/Columbia, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
John Legend shakes loose of the contemporary pop soul style of his previous couple of records with a comparatively raw and direct soul vibe – revisiting some of best socially aware, emotionally resonant and still relevant songs of the 60s & 70s! The best tracks on the set are the ones that have the rawest, most live sounding groove – and there's plenty of that, as he's backed by The Roots. There's no denying John Legend's truthful love of this material, and he sings with genuine depth. They wisely choose numbers with lyrics that stand true to this day, a few of which feature fresh rhymes by guest MCs that further bridge the eras. The track selection is excellent – covering classics by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway and they also go as deep as Baby Huey & Eugene McDaniels. Includes "Hard Times" with Black Thought, "Compared To What", "Wake Up Everybody" with Common & Melanie Fiona, "Our Generation" feat CL Smooth, "Little Ghetto Boy" feat Black Thought (plus the prelude with Malik Yusef), "Hang On In There", "Wholy Holy", "Shine" and more. This one's got a bit more of a modern R&B approach than the jazzier work of Incognito – but still stays in the hip London soul mode, thanks to some great production work by Ray Hayden of Opaz! Maysa's voice is incredible – running up to the heavens, and dipping deep in that wonderful way she has, to make the songs bottom out with a heck of a lot of feeling. Tom Misch and Yusef Dayes definitely make some kinda music here – a sweet blend of jazzy elements, contemporary soul, and a spacious, spacey vibe that resonates strongly with some of our favorite recent sounds from the west coast! The album's on Blue Note, but it's a bit different than some of the label's recent projects – even those that are more soul-based – as the vibe here is heavy on keyboards, vocals, and guitar from Misch – set up with drums from Dayes, in a style that's funky but mellow – all tripping out nicely, with help from a variety of guests along the way. Titles include "Tidal Wave", "The Real", "Sensational", "I Did It For You", "Julie Mangos", "Kyiv", "Last 100", and "What Kinda Music" – plus "Lift Off", with guest work from Rocco Palladino – and "Nightrider", with guest work from Freddie Gibbs! The second album by this funky London combo from the early 90s – stepping forth dramatically from their first set with a smoother modern soul groove. As with the first set, the tracks are stepped in a tradition of funky jazz – but unlike the first one, the groove goes deeper, with a bit more production overall, and use of some of the early 90s London modes of arranging to take the music into a more contemporary R&B mode. Tracks include "Sure Can't Go To The Moon", "Love Is The Teacher", "Move On Out Together", "Lovesick", "Smokey's Clown", and "What Good Is Love?" CD

Fantastic! Omar redoes the track "Be Thankful For What You've Got" – the 70s soul classic by William DeVaughn, one of the greatest soul tracks ever! The tune's done on his album as a duet with Eryka Badu, but here, it's done as a duet with Angie Stone – making for a very different twist on the vocals! The DJ Marco mix has some heavy beats like the original – but we like the Dodge mix even more, which has a bit more of a bounce, and some cool bass pedal riffs! Last up is the Soul Inside mix, which has a warm jazzy finish – great for the mellow groove of the tune! CD

A great little soul set by a singer we're betting will have a long run in the funky underground – a relative newcomer, but one who comes across with a power that really belies his time in the studio! Ben Piriani's music has this righteous, full-on groove that reminds us a lot of that moment when Chicago soul was cusping at the end of the 60s – hitting more progressive themes, and really exploding with power – which is definitely what Ben and the group do here, thanks to sharp, soulful backings – and lots of backup vocals that almost put Piriani's lead in the company of groups like The Artistics or Lost Generation. Unlike other singers who try to go back, but usually just go for the easy marks, Ben's really got his sound just right here – and is one of the best blue-eyed soul singers we've heard in years. Universal, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
A tough title to live up to – but Raphael makes it happen! The album's as wonderful as you might think – all the deeply soulful styles Saadiq worked out with Tony Toni Tone, taken back through a historical range of soul music – firmly planted in a legacy that begins with Stevie Wonder, runs through Maxwell and D'Angelo, and which points the way towards the future of urban soul. Backings are very much in the beats-n-keyboards mode, but Raphael works out such a wide range of moods and modes that the album avoids any of the shortcomings of other albums in such a style. Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
The long-overdue debut of Carlton Jumel Smith – a soul singer with roots at the Harlem address listed in the title, and who's slowly been working his way around the globe in recent years! Those global travels are key to the success of this set – as Smith works very tightly in Finland's Timmion studios with Cold Diamond & Mink – who bring to his music what the Dap-Tones or El Michels have brought to other singers in the deep funk spectrum! Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core.
