Underground SystemWhat Are You ... LP
Soul Clap, 2017. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Underground System have really expanded their vibe this time around – still working with some of the Afro Funk styles of before, but also opening up into a range of contemporary soul styles that maybe fit the image of the cover a bit more than we might have guessed! There's lots of great things percolating in the sonic mix – more beats, catchy lyrics, and playful passages that almost recall some of the the NYC downtown experiments with funky global styles in the post-disco years – but all handled with a much more contemporary vibe. The criss-crossing of styles is a great change from some of the too-standard groups of the scene – and titles include "State Of Mind", "What's It Gonna Take", "Nmani", "Rent Party", "Just A Place", "Sebben", and "Three's A Charm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anthony HamiltonWhat I'm Feelin ... CD
RCA, 2016. Used ... $4.99
Heavy sounds from Anthony Hamilton – a record that's still got all the warm flourish we love from his other work, but which also seems to have a bit more of a bass on the bottom! The production is by Mark Batson on most tracks – and the team of Salaam Remi and James Poyser on a few more – and there's a great use of rock-solid, slow-moving rhythms to the record – grounding the whole thing firmly (and maybe blowing out the cones in your speakers, too!), while Hamilton opens up with those well-crafted vocal modes, full of deep soul flourishes that have made him a hip favorite for years. Titles include "Save Me", "Take You Home", "Love Is An Angry Thing", "Never Letting Go", "Grateful", "Ain't No Shame", "What I'm Feelin", and "Walk In My Shoes". CD

Chocolate Soul, 2007. Used ... $6.99
It's been a long time since we've last heard from Chocolate Soul – but these still still haven't lost their edge for turning up a groove! As with previous volumes, this set's a wonderful assortment of tracks from the Neo Soul underground – work by artists well-known and obscure, brought together in one totally righteous collection that offers a great antidote to mainstream R&B! There's a warmth to most of these numbers that's totally great – and after an initial 10 tracks of soul, the CD also features a bonus "hidden" section titled "Hip Hoppa's Paradise". Soul tracks include "3 Sides" by Crossrhodes with Sy Smith & Raheem DeVaughn, "I Encourage" by K'Alyn, "Sinkin" by Rebirth, "Stay As You Are (you are my star mix)" by Kai Martin, "Sunshine" by Be Natural, "Definition" by Kindred The Family Soul, "Something About You" by Anthony David, "Never Change" by Choklate, "Don't Be Afraid" by Cooly's Hot Box, and "Brighter Than The Sun" by Torri Griffin. Hip hop tracks include "Welcome To Chicago" by Abstract Mindstate with Kanye West, "It Is What It Is" by Red Elk, and "Future Sound (Tariq L rmx)" by Jurassic 5. CD

Disco Soul Gold (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99
The glory of disco is alive and well – thanks to a host of contemporary club talents who really help the music find a new groove in the 21st Century! The title and cover might make you expect a collection of tracks from years back – but the work here is all recent, and brings together soaring sounds from some killer singers who really bring a hell of a lot of spirit to the grooves! All tracks here are mixes handled by Nigel Lowis – which makes for a nicely unified vibe to the whole collection – as tunes bubble with a beautiful blend of upbeat rhythms and soaring strings. Titles include Lowis remakes of "Soul Town" by Ola Onabule, "State Of Mind" by Soul City People, "Can't Knock Me Down" by Chubby Tavares, "Bring It Home To Me" by Marc Staggers, "No Payne No Gain" by Clif & Freda Payne, "Sunny Day" by Hannah White, "Show Me" by McCrei, "Dance" by Gina Carey, "We Bring The Party" by The Dig Band with Dina Carroll, "What The Child Needs" by Terry Ronald, "Soul Night" by Mather & Kingdon, and "Make You Mine" by Samuel D Sanders. Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ... CD
Motown, 2008. Used ... $3.99
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". The 9th Wonder produced single "Honey" is an unlisted bonus track. CD

BilalAirtight's Revenge ... CD
Plug Research, 2010. Used ... $2.99
A masterpiece from Bilal – the record we knew he had in him all this time since 1st Born Second came out nearly a decade prior! Earlier in his career, Bilal was one of those distinct voices you'd hear assisting myriad singers and MCs on their singles, someone you knew should be a superstar in his own right. Whether or not he ever reaches that status in popularity or in financial rewards, here he's delivered what might be the soul/R&B album of the year for 2010. We'd hasten to compare him to anyone else out there, but there's a boundless sense of creativity that begs comparison to Erykah Badu, in spirit if not in the sound. Much of the album is co-produced by Steve Mckie, with live instrumentation that gives it a funky psychedelic soul feel: live drums, beats and effects, Moog, keys, synths, guitars and bass. The other collaborators in the production booth – Shafiq Husayn, Nottz, 88 Keys – all clearly share Bilal's vision, as we hear nothing that sounds like a concession to anything or anyone. Lyrically, Bilal deals with matters of grave importance and more intimate personal truths, but the adventurousness and soulfulness of the music give it all a unified feel. We could go on and on about this one, kids. Don't pass it up! Includes "Cake & Eat It Too", "Restart", "All Matter", "Flying", "Levels", "Little One", "Move On", "Robots", "The Dollar", "Who Are You" and "Think Over". CD

Steven A ClarkWhere Neon Goes To Die ... CD
Secretly Canadian, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 14.98
Really compelling music from Steven A Clark – a singer who's definitely in a contemporary soul vein, but who also seems to be using all these references from the 80s – but in an unusual way! Unlike other singers who go straight for an 80s bass or boogie mode, Steven instead almost feels like he's sampling old records from the catalogs of labels like 4AD, Factory, or Creation – then using those sounds in the background to create these really unique colors and sonic elements – all while working on lyrics that are relatively straightforward! Imagine if David Sylvian ever produced a soul record, and you'll get part of the picture – but Clark is definitely his own man throughout, on titles that include "Evil Woman", "Feel This Way", "Maria Under The Moon", "On & On", "Did I Hurt U", "Days Like This", and "What Can I Do". Virgin, 2000. Used ... $3.99
Sweet and gritty soul from D'Angelo – who takes a huge step into deeper territory on Voodoo – and it's one of the most monumental records of its time! On one level, Voodoo works as a nicely stripped-down session with a very classic soul feel. Gone are the overzealous flourishes that sometimes overwhelmed his earlier songs, and in their place are some sweetly crafted vocal parts with a classic Marvin Gaye/Al Green feel. That warmth is probably what made Voodoo a massive popular success – but what makes it such a creative triumph are the darker undercurrents – hinting at a troubled soul struggling for spiritual truth. One of the rare cases in popular music when great art became music for the masses! Titles include "Left & Right (feat Method Man & Redman)", "The Line", "Spanish Joint", "Africa", "Feel Like Makin Love", "The Root", "Playa Playa", "Devil's Pie", and "Greatdayndamornin/Booty". CD

Blue Note, 2013. Used ... $8.99
Mindblowing work from Robert Glasper – a set that makes us fall in love with his music even more than before – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given that we've loved him for years! Glasper's working here in his collaborative Black Radio format – but at a level that's even more perfected than the initial album of this project – a really groundbreaking blend of live jazz instrumentation and underground soul inspiration – served up by Robert's core quartet, with help from a whole host of wonderful guest singers! Glasper alone is worth the price of admission – Fender Rhodes and piano lines that are completely sublime, in that flowing groove that's only gotten better with age – and the combo also features wicked bass from Derrick Hodge, sax and flute from Casey Benjamin, and some damn funky drums from Mark Colenburg – who proves that you don't need any drum loops or samples to make music this great. The singers are the icing on the cake – a lineup that includes Faith Evans, Dwele, Jill Scott, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Norah Jones, and others – on titles that include "Calls", "Worries", "I Stand Alone", "What Are We Doing", "Trust", "Yet To Find", "You Own Me", "Somebody Else", "Persevere", and "Let It Ride". GOOD/Columbia, 2010. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
John Legend shakes loose of the contemporary pop soul style of his previous couple of records with a comparatively raw and direct soul vibe – revisiting some of best socially aware, emotionally resonant and still relevant songs of the 60s & 70s! The best tracks on the set are the ones that have the rawest, most live sounding groove – and there's plenty of that, as he's backed by The Roots. There's no denying John Legend's truthful love of this material, and he sings with genuine depth. They wisely choose numbers with lyrics that stand true to this day, a few of which feature fresh rhymes by guest MCs that further bridge the eras. The track selection is excellent – covering classics by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway and they also go as deep as Baby Huey & Eugene McDaniels. Includes "Hard Times" with Black Thought, "Compared To What", "Wake Up Everybody" with Common & Melanie Fiona, "Our Generation" feat CL Smooth, "Little Ghetto Boy" feat Black Thought (plus the prelude with Malik Yusef), "Hang On In There", "Wholy Holy", "Shine" and more. Ben Piriani's music has this righteous, full-on groove that reminds us a lot of that moment when Chicago soul was cusping at the end of the 60s – hitting more progressive themes, and really exploding with power – which is definitely what Ben and the group do here, thanks to sharp, soulful backings – and lots of backup vocals that almost put Piriani's lead in the company of groups like The Artistics or Lost Generation. Unlike other singers who try to go back, but usually just go for the easy marks, Ben's really got his sound just right here – and is one of the best blue-eyed soul singers we've heard in years. Dunham/Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
The cover sticker bills this one as sounding like a lost collaboration between the Beach Boys and Delfonics – although for our money, we'd lean a bit more towards the latter – as the Sha La Das have a surprisingly strong approach to harmony soul! Instrumentation and production are much leaner than Brian Wilson ever would have used – more in the Daptone mode you'd expect from the label, and from the great backings from the Menahan Street Band – who are wonderfully restrained here, and really just let the vocals of the quartet shine through in a mighty nice way! None of these guys is as strong as Poogie Hart of The Delfonics (but then again – who could be?) – yet the group really absorbs the best spirit of those days when harmony soul sounded best in a spare indie label setting – which is exactly the way that Daptone presents them. Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. The third album from KEM and it's a wonderful one – delivering on the promise of the title with a deeply soulful, truthful and personal approach – a record that brings grace, subtly and a timeless warmth in a way that surprises us in a wonderful way! We love a modern soul that evokes the classic, slow cooking soul of the 70s and 80s without feeling like a self-conscious throwback, and that's what KEM has done here. Lightly grooving keys, delicately layered real instrumentation and that brings an almost jazzy soul elegance – and most importantly, solid songs and truly soulful vocals. A real winner! Includes "Golden Days" with Jill Scott, plus "When I'm Loving You", "Can You Feel It", "Share My Life", "Human Touch", "If It's Love", "You're On My Mind" and more. CD

✨✧ NxWorries (Anderson Paak & Knxwledge)Yes Lawd! (with download) ... LP
Stones Throw, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge's full length debut as a duo – and the most triumphant Stones Throw record in years! To this (still early) point in young .Paak's career, his voice has already proved to be a prime vessel for natural grit and mood, if not gamechanger songwriting, best paired with crackling, funk-steeped hip hop soul production. That's the case whether he's producing himself, working with a giant like Dr. Dre, or paired as he is here with Knxledge. Knx's production is a perfect backdrop – beats out front in the mix, classic Cali sample funk and soul framing the vocals – with a lingering haze holding it all together amazingly well! Intentional or not, Yes Lawd channels earlier Stones Throw classic LPs like Jaylib and Madvillain in the way it pairs distinctive contemporary talents for a joint duo effort, and after .Paak's solo shot Malibu, it's his second potential classic in a single year! Includes "Livvin", "Wngs", "What More Can I Say", "Kutless", "Lyk Dis", "Can't Stop", "Get Bigger", "Scared Money", "Suede", "Starlite", "Sidepiece", "Jodi", "Link Up", "Another Time", "Fkku" and more. ✨✧ Doug ShortsGet With The Program/Heads or Tails ... 7-inch
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Doug Shorts with a defter blend of electro soul and raw funk than what we've come to expect from him – as he's been a master of the former for quite a while now – bringing a modern soul bounce together with little bit of funky grit! "Get With The Program" is the best of both worlds with dusty drums, horns, flute and piano under sly 80s boogie touches and Doug's charismatic vocals. You could flip a coin to choose that or the flip side's "Heads Or Tails" a favorite, the latter with some nicely layered vocals and a spacey approach to the keys. ✨✧ Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler featuring Dames BrownOne ... LP
Sessions Sounds, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The funky Will Sessions groove gets some great electric help from Amp Fiddler – and this time around, there's also chorus vocals from the soulful Dames Brown trio! Fiddler handles most of the lead lyrics, and also plays plenty of keyboards – as you'll know from his own work – while Will Sessions holds down the rest of the instrumentation in a flurry of tight drums, riffing guitar, and mighty nice horns – plus lots more Fender Rhodes and other keys from group leader Sam Beaubein! The Dames seem to make Amp Fiddler's vocals really sound even richer than usual – almost as if they're egging him on to become the kind of soul singer we always heard in his promise. Titles include "What It Is", "Belle Isle Drive", "Rendezvous", "Seven Mile", "Reconcile", "Who I Am", "Lost Without You", and "Reminiscin". (Deep Funk, Neo Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lucas ArrudaOnda Nova ... LP
Favorite (France), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Completely Sublime work from Lucas Arruda – an artist we love more and more with each new record – and one that we can't believe isn't a huge global success by this point! Lucas has a way of mixing together older Brazilian modes – a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and plenty of soul – all wrapped up in this warm AOR-styled production – but with a lean, crisp quality that's totally fresh – and very much his own! Arruda's got the warmth and charm of a classic singer from the 70s – and even though some of the lyrics are in English, there's a really transcendent quality when he's singing Portuguese too – a way of infusing the words with enough personal power to make them come across, even past the barrier of language. The album's filled with catchy numbers that rival the greatness of 70s AM radio – and titles include "Perdidos E Bobos", "Dragoes E Tigres", "What I'd Do For Love", "Soulshine", "Depois Do Sol", "Dois Naufragos", and "Heaven's In Your Arms". ✨✧ Benny SingsCity Pop ... LP
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Titles include "Familiar", "Not Enough", "Duplicate", "Dreamin", "Summerlude", "Everything I Know", and "Nakameguro". LP, Vinyl record album
