Terrace Martin & Devi DevHere My Dear ... LP
De Rap Winkel (Netherlands), 2010. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $39.99
A set inspired by the Marvin Gaye album of the same name, but delivered here in a very contemporary spirit – handled with lots of fantastic production from Terrace Martin – who moves between a mix of hip hop and some of the cosmic jazz touches that have become his strength in more recent years! Guests include a lot of heavyweight talents – Kendrick Lamar, Kurupt, Wiz Khalifa, Charlie Wilson, Snoop Dogg, and others – and titles include "What You Won't Do For Love", "Expectations", "Here My Dear", "Call Me", "Makings Of You", "Koo Koo Cyco Loco", "Hey Girl", "Show Her The Way", and "Cheat". ✨✧ India ArieTestimony Vol 2 – Love & Politics ... CD
Soulbird/Universal, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Chapter two, and an even deeper set than India Arie's first Testimony album – a record that shows a lot of growth in India's music, and a style that's even more mature and righteous than before! Arie's acoustic guitar is a key part of the instrumentation, and the album features a fair bit of mellower tracks too – so that there's a sense of intimacy in the music that's really great – the perfect setting for India's positive thinking and spiritual growth, which is documented somewhat in her copious notes inside the album's booklet! Most tunes have a warm glow, but one that's never smooth or commercial – and guests on the album include Musiq Soulchild, Gramps Morgan, Dobet Gnahore, and Terrell Carter. Titles include "Long Goodbye", "Chocolate High", "Ghetto", "Therapy", "River Rise", "Pearls", "Better Way", "Yellow", and "He Heals Me". CD

✨✧ Childish GambinoBecause The Internet (2 X 180 gram vinyl pressing) ... LP
Glassnote, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Maybe not the first album from Childish Gambino, but a set that certainly showed the world that the hip hop side of Donald Glover was ready to overtake his role on screen! The album's rock-solid all the way through – as much a contemporary soul experiment as a hip hop masterpiece – and the expansive vision here shifts beautifully between high-minded concepts and tunes that are very down to earth – a balance that not only elevates the role of Glover/Gambino, but also the role of mainstream hip hop as well! Titles include "Dial Up", "The Worst Guys", "Telegraph Ave", "Sweatpants", "Worldstar", "Crawl", "Shadows", "Death By Numbers", "No Exit", "Zealots Of Stockholm", "Flight Of The Navigator", "3005", "Earth The Oldest Computer", and "Playing Around Before The Party". Peven EverettPower Soul ... CD
Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Peven Everett in all his glory – stepping forth in one of his best-produced albums in years! As with most of Peven's records, all music and vocals are from the man himself – a one-man show, but with a lot more going on than most full groups! Peven is really at the top of his game here – gliding over the top of the tunes with a sense of soul and spirit that's really tremendous – warm vocals, sweet keys, and snapping rhythms – but all wrapped up with a depth that none of his contemporaries can match! The record's key proof that Peven can easily be THE biggest soul star of the decade when he gets things focused – and the record's awash with instant classics that include "All My Life", "Can't Do Without", "Surely Shorty", "Stuck", "Just A Girl", "Sexy Make Up", and "Washing". MaxwellBlack SUMMERS' Night (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia, 2016. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
It's taken us a bit longer than expected to get this second installment in Maxwell's Black Summers' Night series – but it's been well worth the wait, given the greater depth in the music! All that we love about Maxwell's previous records is alive and well here – but there's also kind of a sharper edge to the sound, too – these fuller bottom currents that almost seem to be adding a second sort of instrumental commentary, alongside the lyrical activity up top – all while the whole thing is wrapped together with that warm keyboard flow that first made Maxwell stand out so many years back! There's almost this double edge to the whole thing – rough with the smooth, or turmoil under peace – which gives the whole thing a lot more power than this sort of record from some of Maxwell's contemporaries. Score another win for the mighty one – on tracks that include "The Fall", "Lake By The Ocean", "Lost", "Gods", "Fingers Crossed", "Hostage", "1990x", and "All The Ways Love Can Feel". ✨✧ Monday MichiruSoulception ... CD
Adventure Music, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from Monday Michiru – quite possibly her greatest album in years, and one that really draws together all the best elements of her style! The vocals are wonderful – soaring, fluid, and filled with soul – almost more confident than ever – and set to these small group jazz arrangements that still bounce around with lots of contemporary rhythms – yet all played live, almost in a clubjazz mode – which makes for a perfect backdrop for Monday's lyrics! As always, the vibe is righteous, and the spirit is totally uplifting – the kind of amazing music that's held us rapt, watching her career for the past two decades – never disappointed, and always blown away by the rich progression in her music. Monday plays a bit of flute on the record, Ed Motta sings guest vocals on a version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Bridges" – and other titles include "Adventures", "What Is In A Soul", "Map Of The Soul", "What Defines You", "Brasilianos", "Til Morning Comes Again", and "The Elusive Song".
