Monday MichiruFalling/Restless/Early Dawn (Song For Nikita) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2000. New Copy (pic cover)... $6.99
Jazzy, lovely, and completely soulful! "Fallin" begins with a soaring drum break, riffing away as tight piano lines join in, along with Monday's scatting vocals. The cut's got a classy jazzy sound that's totally 70s – but with enough of a groove to work well on a modern dancefloor. "Restless" is a bit more straight funk – with breakbeats and Fender Rhodes on the intro, and some great vocals by Monday that remind us a bit of Marlena Shaw's classic work. "Early Dawn" is a sweet jazzy ballad, with flute and guitar, in a mellower mode that reminds us of her New Directions single. Another clear winner from one of the best soul artists around – and worth the Japanese price tag! CD

Monday MichiruMermaid ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $13.99
An EP release – but one that offers up a great standout moment in the career of Monday Michiru – and a record that has the power to knock away most other contemporary soul of the time! Monday's picking up a bit more of a clubby vibe than her earlier years – getting great help from Masters At Work on a remix of "Sunshine After The Rain" – which was one of our favorite tracks from the Jazz Brat album! She also serves up a uniquely rhythmic take on the Minnie Riperton classic "Lovin You" – alongside other good cuts that include "Love Flow", "Far To Go", "Where Is The Passion", and the instrumental track "Mermaid". Monday MichiruNew Beginnings EP ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... $6.99
A wonderful EP from Monday Michiru – featuring three tracks exclusive to this release – all with a sound that recalls some of the best jazzy soul of the 70s! "Something To Believe In" is an excellent jazzy cut with warm electric piano riffs to match Monday's soulful vocals. "New Beginnings" mixes acoustic guitar and some spare electronics, in almost a classic Minnie Riperton sound. And "Stop N Listen" continues the nice guitar work with some heavier bassy beats, plus a nice sing-song jazzy groove. Very nice all around – and the CD features 3 bonus instrumentals of the vocal cuts, for a total of 6 tracks in all! CD

Monday MichiruPlay It By Ear ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $6.99
Great single from our favorite Japanese singer! The cut's got a great rolling jazzy groove, with a deep bassline, nicely plucked guitar lines, and soulful vocals from Monday. As usual, the lyrics are in English, and the writing has a very positive vibe to it. There's 3 mixes on the single, including one by Carlos Murphy with a nice dancefloor groove, and the enigmatic "Naked Mix"! CD

Monday MichiruPremiumix ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $13.99
Great work from our favorite Japanese soul star – a nice batch of remixes, filled with guest appearances by the likes of Incognito, Basement Jaxx, Shinichi Osawa, Soul Society, Byron Wallen, Rob Playford, and others – all packaged in an extremely captivating cover with great graphics! Titles include "You Make Me (Shin Shin's Mix)", "Yellow Bird (Incognito Capoeira Mix)", "Cruel 2 Be Kind (Basement Jaxx Nite Dub)", "Change Of Scenery", "Double Image (Live At Manic One Remix)", "Love Flow (Mango Margarita Mix)", and "Freed Or Bound (Reconsideration Mix)". Very nice stuff, with more focus on the dancefloor side of Monday's work, than the pop-hook sort of side. A mixture of jazzy bits, drum and bass bits, and lots more! CD

Monday MichiruRecollections (Remixes & Covers) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2001. New Copy ... $13.99
A collection of hard-to-find work by Monday Michiru – featuring mixes and covers that have been issued as singles in the past, and which fit together surprisingly well as a full LP! If you know Monday's work, you know that her singles often feature versions of tracks that are quite different than the LP versions – recrafted with the help of some of the best NuSoul producers and remixers, like Joe Claussell, Masters At Work, Shinchi Osaway, and Bluey, all of whom contribute work to this set. The package is great – and with a total of 11 tracks in all, it will save you a lot of time (and money) tracking down those expensive import 12" singles! The set's mixed together – but not strongly, so that all the songs are very much intact – and titles include "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Lovin You (acoustic live version)", "Double Image (live at Manic One rmx)", "Chasing After The Sun (Banda Black Lero mix)", "Yellow Bird (Incognito Capoeira mix)", "Tomorrow's Sunrise (Murphy meets Titomaxx)", "Love Flow (Mango margarita mix)", "Mysteries Of Life (Ananda Project Black Tail dub)", and "Higher (higher dub)". Monday MichiruSelections '97-'00 ... CD
Polydor (Japan), Late 90s. New Copy ... $13.99
A great selection of tracks by one of the best soul singers of the past few decades! Japanese/American vocalist Monday Michiru's been one of the few new artists we've supported heavily since our "dusty" past – and this 12 track set is a wonderful sampling of tracks she's recorded over the past few years, years that have seen Monday move into a variety of new styles, ever expanding her creative range to always keep us coming back for more! There's some numbers on here that are lifted from hard to find singles, plus more that stand out as some of her best LP tracks of recent years – and titles include "Play It By Ear", "Emerald Life (Nunca Tan Fermosa Cosa Vido)", "You Make Me", "Chances", "Full Bottle Of Soul", "Do It Again", "Stop & Listen", "Supirar", "Fallin (Indian Summer mix)", "Chasing After The Sun (barefood n pregnant version)", and "Thinking Of You". Monday MichiruTomorrow's Sunrise (Murphy Meets Titomaxx, Sakura Hills Disco 3000 rmx, album)/Higher (Spiritual Life voc, Higher dub) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $6.99
A wonderful Latin groover from Monday's Optimista album, remixed nicely here with some heavy conga beats, rolling piano riffs, and great production on the vocals! The cut's super catchy, and the instrumental remix is just as good as the vocal, as it's got some tight Latin playing that sound super. The flipside adds a nice house-heavy kick to the cut, taking it straight to the dancefloor, yet losing none of Monday's soulful vocals! CD

Monday MichiruYellow Bird (Incognito capoeira mix, Incognito capoeira inst)/Double Image (orig) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $6.99
A real charmer from Monday – the great tune "Yellow Bird" from her Double Image album, dressed up with some Braziliany touches from Incognito! The track's warm, glowing – and has just the right amount of jazzy soul to put it up there with Monday's best work! The flip's a harder number with heavy beats – a bit of a London twist, and nice and long, too! CD
