Bastards Of SoulSpinnin (with bonus download) ... LP
Eastwood Music Group, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
A really special sort of record from the Bastards Of Soul – a Texas group, but one who work in this great mix of deep soul and slight southern rock touches – at a level that almost makes this album feel like some lost nugget from the vaults of Capricorn Records! Vocals are by male singer Chadwick Murray – not the lovely lady on the cover – and there's a cool crossover vibe here that takes us back to work by 70s genius talents like Eddie Hinton or Dan Penn, with guitar lines that are strong, but balanced by these warmer organ currents that really underscore the more soulful elements in the music – as do the laidback rhythms on the tunes. Titles include "I've Got The Key", "Funky Ham & Eggs", "Back To The City", "Spinning Out Of Control", "The Way It Should Be", "The Waiting Time", and "Your Love Has Turned My Heart To Bitterness". Rhian BensonGold Coast ... CD
DKG Music, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Nice! 14 tracks including "Words Hurt Too", "Say How I Feel", "Stealing My Peace Of Mind", "Soul Boy", "Shake It Away", "A Moment In Shine", "Gold Sky", "Young Girl" and more. CD
(Out of print, digipack case has some edgewear & a sticker remnant on the cover.)

✨✧ Camera SoulExistence ... CD
Extra Smooth/P-Vine (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A great little group – and one with a wonderful talent for bringing together soulful styles in a really catchy way – using bits of funk, ala the Brand New Heavies – but also not afraid to go for a tighter hook, too – in a way that reminds of some of our favorite Japanese-only recordings by Swing Out Sister or Workshy! As with both of those groups, there's a great female singer in the lead – the lovely Maria Enrica Lotesoriere, who also wrote all the lyrics – and arrangements are handled by keyboardist Pippo Lombardo, whose sweet keys really hold together the whole thing nicely. Titles include "Colorado Sky", "Another Smile", "One More Chance", "In The City", "What I Deserve", and "Existence". CD

JaffaEchoes ... CD
Unique (Germany), 2011. Used ... $4.99
The debut of vocalist Christel Meijer and beats & keys player Phil Martin as Jaffa (not the Jaffa that recorded for Compost Records) – and it's a good one! Dreamy, lovely melodies and really sweet vocals and a bit of an electronic soul backdrop – with a focus on quality songwriting rather than the atmospherics. Includes "Stay Out Here", "Take It Slow", "Help Me Out", "Don't Listen", "All I Have", "Hair Repair", "Alice", "Stuck", "For You (In Awe)" and "An Echo (Remains Free)". (New Grooves, Neo Soul) CD

Korpi EnsemblePuu ... CD
Jupiter (Finland), 2004. Used ... $4.99
A lovely debut from this icy little Finnish ensemble – done in a laidback singer-songwriter mode, one that mixes together equal parts Quintessence-styled soul and guitar-based pop. Many of the tunes are nice and mellow – combining English language vocals with cool-toned piano lines, light percussion, hollow-body guitar, and some wonderful passages on accordion, which really help to create an evocative sound! The work's a bit like a female version of some of the Jay Jay Johanson recordings of a few years back – but without as much of Jay Jay's sense of distance in the lyrics. Titles include "Everything's All Right", "Things", "Our Love", "Blind World", "Question", "Coming Home", "Waves", and "Sailor". CD

Meshell NdegeocelloWorld Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams (limited edition) ... CD
Universal, 2007. Used ... $8.99
An amazing departure in sound for Meshell Ndegeocello – a record that firmly delivers on the earlier promise of her Article 3 EP! As with that one, the sound here is quite different than the funky soul of Meshell's earliest work back in the 90s – an almost-experimental blend of fuzz, funk, fusion, dub, and soul – served up with lots of darker undertones, and a range of rhythms that are sometimes pretty intense! There's almost an early 80s arty sort of feel going on – a mode that takes us back to that great time in the post-punk, post-disco years when barriers between styles had broken down a bit – allowing artists to express themselves in really unique new ways. And in a world where so many Neo Soul artists seem in danger of a high convergence of modes and cliches, Meshell's found some tremendous new territory for herself – and has reminded us that she's still got some much sharper edges than her contemporaries. A host of great guests really help Meshell find her groove here – including Sy Smith on vocals, Oliver Lake on saxophone, James Newton on flute, Robert Glasper on piano, and Graham Haynes on cornet. Titles include "Haditha", "Evolution", "Virgo", "Lovely Lady", "The Sloganeer Paradise", "Elliptical", "Shirk", "Article 3", "Headline", "Michell Johnson", and "Solomon". CD

Alice RussellUnder The Munka Moon ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2004. Used ... $6.99
A wonderful set from UK chanteuse Alice Russell – one of the best records yet to come out on always reliable Tru Thoughts label! Alice's strong soul vocals have added real depth to tracks by Quantic and others, but here she succeeds tenfold as the marquee artist! She has a heavy, resonate style that portrays a genuine love for Minnie Riperton and Chaka Khan at her best – and she's given some wonderful material here to showcase her strengths. The TM Juke produced opener "Hurry On Now" takes a light symphonic soul approach, complete with lovely string charts and slowly rolling drums. Alice is equally at home with mellow, Latin groove of "Sweet As The Air". Other tracks take a more stripped down, jazzy combo approach while still working in some organic, yet still pretty housey touches here and there. It's a winner all the way through – one that should bust the gates wide open, making Alice Russell one of the most in-demand UK soul vocalists for years to come! "Someday", "Hard Times", "Tired Little One", "Peace Resides", "Taking Hold", "Something That's Real", "Search The Heavens", "Take Your Time, Change Your Mind", "Sweet Calling", "Somebody's Gonna Love You" featuring Quantic and more. ✨✧ SolUpfront – An EC3 Vibe ... CD
Pacific Coast Jazz, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great sounds from Sol – an artist with a warm glow right from the start, but also a nice sense of crispness that really personalizes his lyrics! Sol's got an approach here that almost feels like gospel – especially given his vocal range, and his positive energy – but the music is definitely secular overall, and features some well-done covers of work by Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder! There's a killer take on "Lovely Day", with almost a Latin jazz sort of vibe – and Stevie's great "Golden Lady", one of our favorite tunes ever, is taken at a slightly quicker clip, with an nice sax bit too. Yet the original tunes are almost even better – and include "That's The Way I Feel You", "Always", "Invisible", and "After The Sunrise". CD
