Bet.e & StefDay By Day ... LP
Bet.e & Stef Records/Return To Analog (Canada), 2002. New Copy 2LP ... $14.99
Magical work from this amazing duo – the lovely Bet.e & Stef, a Candian pair with a wonderful Brazilian sound, clearly destined for stardom! Imagine all the best bits of the 60s recordings by Astrud and Joao Gilberto, filtered through the best early work of Tracey Thorn or Sade, handled with a stripped-down indie sound – and you've still only got part of the picture! The CD's really great – a very fresh breath of air in a world of fake music, stepping out with an honest quality that's quite inspiring, and done with a depth of soul that shows that we're only at the beginning of the great music we'll be able to hear from this incredible pair! Titles include "Zana", "Il N'Aurait Fallu", "I'm There", "Vagabond", "Rega Tres", "Day By Day", "All Is Well", and "It's Over". (Brazil, Neo Soul) LP, Vinyl record album
(Numbered limited edition of 500!)

Anthony DavidHello Like Before – The Songs Of Bill Withers ... CD
Shanachie, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
A really great combination of talents – the songs of Bill Withers and the vocals of Anthony David – a singer whose acoustic undercurrents make him a perfect partner for Bill's music! If anything, the presentation here might be even more spare and stripped-down than Withers' originals – as the music was recorded on the Atlanta scene, with backing from some of David's key associates – all in a laidback groove that's jazzy and electric one minute, spare and acoustic the other. The songs give David a majesty we've never heard before – and titles include "I Can't Write Left Handed", "Use Me", "Hope She'll Be Happier", "Lovely Day", "Kissing My Love", "Spend The Night", "Hello Like Before", "I Don't Know", "Grandma's Hands", and "You Can't Just Smile It Away". ✨✧ Clara Hill's FolkwavesSideways ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing new direction for the lovely Clara Hill – easily one of our favorite singers on the European scene – working here in her new Folkwaves project with members of Jazztronik and 4 Hero! The sound here is a bit like you might guess from group's title – slightly acoustic at moments, a bit in the style that Jazztronik's been dropping on some of their Secret Love compilations. But the overall groove is much more positive and soulful too – every bit as great as Hill's previous records, and soaring out with plenty of warmly jazzy touches in the instrumentation! There's a sense of presence and power here that grabs you right away – a bit like that on some of 4 Hero's recent work – but as the record moves on, it also allows for some gentler, more personal moments too – bringing in acoustic guitar from Hill alongside the vocals. Titles include "Everything", "Be Like That ", "Sad Girl", "Wonderful World", "If Only", "About You", "Ocean Green", and "Once I Know". CD

Jose JamesLean On Me ... LP
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99
Maybe not the first album to ever pay tribute to the music of the great Bill Withers – but certainly one of the best we've ever heard, thanks to the mighty vocals of Jose James! Over a relatively short career, James has proven to be a singer who can handle himself in just about any setting – but he really seems to be especially perfect, here – working with classic songs by Withers, but making them completely his own, through a raspy vocal approach that really seems to transform the tunes in Jose's hands! And despite a cover image that has James standing with an acoustic guitar, that instrument here is played by Brad Allen Williams – in a great small combo setting that also features excellent Fender Rhodes, organ, and piano from Kris Bowers. Lalah Hathaway guests on a great remake of "Lovely Day" – and other tunes include "Who Is He", "Hello Like Before", "Better Off Dead", "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Grandma's Hands", "Lean On Me", "Kissing My Love", "Just The Two Of Us", "Hope She'll Be Happier", and "Use Me". Carmen LundySolamente – The Demo Project ... CD
Afrasia, 2009. Used ... $6.99
Incredible work from Carmen Lundy – an album that's got us falling in love with her music all over again – but from a completely different perspective! As you might guess from the "demo" in the title, the album's got Lundy working in a very intimate setting – handling all keyboards, rhythms, and other instrumentation on the record herself – in a sweetly soulful groove that's quite different than some of her jazz-based albums! Don't let the word "demo" put you off, either – as these recordings are all perfectly polished, and just as professionally done as other Lundy recordings – and although we always knew Carmen had some instrumental talent, we're really stunned here at how her work on keyboards, piano, guitar, bass, harp, and percussion really helps open up the flavor of her songs. All tracks are new here – all really lovely work that makes the album as essential as any other classics from Lundy. Titles include "Move On", "Show Me A Sign", "The Out Crowd", "Fire In The Rhythm", "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", "Without Your Love", "When Lights Are Low", "Free As A Child", and "Requiem For Kathyrn". SolUpfront – An EC3 Vibe ... CD
Pacific Coast Jazz, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 10.99
Great sounds from Sol – an artist with a warm glow right from the start, but also a nice sense of crispness that really personalizes his lyrics! Sol's got an approach here that almost feels like gospel – especially given his vocal range, and his positive energy – but the music is definitely secular overall, and features some well-done covers of work by Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder! There's a killer take on "Lovely Day", with almost a Latin jazz sort of vibe – and Stevie's great "Golden Lady", one of our favorite tunes ever, is taken at a slightly quicker clip, with an nice sax bit too. Yet the original tunes are almost even better – and include "That's The Way I Feel You", "Always", "Invisible", and "After The Sunrise". CD

✨✧ Rhian BensonGold Coast ... CD
DKG Music, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Nice! 14 tracks including "Words Hurt Too", "Say How I Feel", "Stealing My Peace Of Mind", "Soul Boy", "Shake It Away", "A Moment In Shine", "Gold Sky", "Young Girl" and more. CD

✨✧ Monday MichiruFalling/Restless/Early Dawn (Song For Nikita) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2000. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Jazzy, lovely, and completely soulful! "Fallin" begins with a soaring drum break, riffing away as tight piano lines join in, along with Monday's scatting vocals. The cut's got a classy jazzy sound that's totally 70s – but with enough of a groove to work well on a modern dancefloor. "Restless" is a bit more straight funk – with breakbeats and Fender Rhodes on the intro, and some great vocals by Monday that remind us a bit of Marlena Shaw's classic work. "Early Dawn" is a sweet jazzy ballad, with flute and guitar, in a mellower mode that reminds us of her New Directions single. Another clear winner from one of the best soul artists around – and worth the Japanese price tag! CD
(Please Note – CD case has a sticker in Japanese on the back.)

Grand Gallery, 2017. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A very limited 7" single by the lovely Monday Michiru – only done for the Japanese market! "You Are The Universe" is a beautifully soulful song – a cover of a tune by Siedah Garrett, but done in a way that's soaring and spiritual, and very much the kind of sound that made us first fall in love with Monday's music many years back! The tune beautifully mixes jazz and house, and is made even better by the lead vocal – and it's backed by a cool take on Teena Marie's "Ooh La La La" – again done at a level that makes the tune Monday's own! (Funky 45's, Neo Soul) 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Esperanza SpaldingRadio Music Society ... CD
Heads Up, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest record so far from the lovely Esperanza Spalding – a set that has her moving farther from jazz, into a wonderfully warm style of soul music overall! The mix of modes is exquisite – a blend of Spalding's jazz-trained vocals with some beautiful arrangements that sparkle and glisten with this righteous vibe we'd put right up there with the best 70s recordings by Minnie Riperton or Linda Lewis – a really rare breed that goes way beyond the wonderful promise Esperanza's always had right from the start! The album is an instant treasure – the sort that's sure to please everyone who's already followed Spalding on her journey, yet also win her a huge new audience as well. Q-Tip helped a bit on production, but most of the work is by Spalding herself – and titles include "Radio Song", "Cinnamon Tree", "Crowned & Kissed", "Land Of The Free", "Black Gold", "Let Her", "Endangered Species", "Smile Like That", and "I Can't Help It". Comes with bonus download cart for 11 short films! CD
