✨✧ Gnarls BarkleyOdd Couple ... CD
Atlantic/Downtown, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A round two knockout for Gnarls Barkley – an album we think is better than the landmark St Elsewhere LP – boisterous pop art & soul from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo! We were slightly trepid when the Odd Couple was announced, fearing a hasty attempt to rekindle the magic that clearly caught everyone by surprise a couple years ago, but that worry is squashed. This is a near masterpiece, kids! Incredibly deep and impressively spun from obscure sound library records, Italian soundtracks, and all kinds of moddish samples by Danger Mouse – with warmly scratchy vocals by Cee-Lo that are as fresh as anything he's ever done. Again, he's laughing in the face of darkness and depression, and somehow making a party out of it! You won't find another mainstream success story this year that's so fun and charming on a superficial level – while truthfully dark and troubled if you focus some on the lyrics. Hype be damned, this one's amazing! Tracks include "Charity Case", "Who's Gonna Save My Soul", "Going On", "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)", "Would Be Killer", "Open Book", "Whatever", "Surprise", "No Time Soon", "She Knows", "Blind Mary", "Neighbors", "A Little Better". (Hip Hop, Neo Soul) CD

Aloe BlaccShine Through ... CD
Stones Throw, 2006. Used ... $3.99
A batch of eclectic postmodern soul that's as original and instantly gratifying as anything we've heard on Stones Throw! Aloe Blacc more than lives up to the expectations we had for him after hearing his first couple of Stones Throw singles. His previous work in the adventurous hip hop outfit Emanon really only hints at his solo work – and it's even more bold in its idiosyncratic approach to an appealing groove! The almost entirely self-produced Shine Through (Oh No and Madlib produce one track each) is rife with an electronic sheen, touching on a bubbling psychedelic soul vibe we've never really heard before. A couple of tracks have guitar, bass, and keys that bring a more organic, but still kind of otherworldly groove – even touching on a cosmic Latin vibe on a couple of tunes! Tracks include "Whole World", a totally re-imagined take on Sam Cooke's "Long Time Coming" (produced by Oh No), "Are You Ready", "Busking", "Bailar", "Nascimento", "Dance For Life", "Patria Mia", "Shine Through", "Caged Birdsong", "Arrive", "Want Me", "One Inna" (produced by Madlib) and "I'm Beautiful". ✨✧ D'AngeloUnreleased Rare & Live ... LP
EMI (Japan), Late 1990s/Early 2000s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A great vinyl release of beautiful live material from one of the greatest new soul stars of the past decade – plus rare and previously unreleased tracks! Sides A & B of this double vinyl set features rare tracks and remixes of album tracks by some of the most influential hip hop figures of the last couple of decades. Tracks include "Brown Sugar" (Buckwild rmx feat Kool G Rap", "Cold War" (remix featuring GZA & Inspectah Deck), "You're My Lady" (Premier remix featuring AZ), "Ghetto Heaven" (rmx) with Common and more! The live portion of the album on sides C & D is essentially the Japanese release Live At The Jazz Cafe – a stellar D'Angelo set from legendary London groove room! The crowd is extremely enthusiastic, and the whole thing falls together beautifully – with a hard raw soul vibe that's similar to, but edgier than, D'Angelo's studio albums. Lots of great electric piano, soulful vocals, and great backing by a tight band. Titles include "Sh*t, Damn, Motherf*cker", "Me & Those Dreamin Eyes Of Mine" (featuring Angie Stone", "Brown Sugar", and "Cruisin". Also includes great covers of 70s soul classics "Can't Hide Love" and "Heaven Must Be Like This". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is bent a bit at the corners.)

✨✧ Jill Scott featuring Mos DefLove Rain (head nod remix, head nod inst, album, coffee shop mix, inst, head nod acapella) ... 12-inch
Epic, 2000. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A couple of great remixes of Jill Scott's wonderful "Love Rain" track with Mos Def, one of the best soul hits of recent years! They titles say a lot; the head nod mix is just that, with a pounding bass line and Mos's guest turn cranked up in the mix. The coffee shop mix turns down the bass just a bit, and cranks the jazzy keys, putting a strong emphasis on Jill's excellent scatty delivery. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Amy WinehouseLioness – Hidden Treasures (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Universal, 2011. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. Includes "Our Day Will Come", "Between The Cheats", "Tears Dry (Original Version)", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (2011)", "Like Smoke" feat Nas (and some eerily timely lyricism, as of this album's release date), "Valerie ('68 Version)", "Half Time", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Half Time", "Body & Soul" with Tony Bennett, "A Song For You" and more. ✨✧ WeekndStarboy (colored vinyl) ... LP
Republic, 2017. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Bright pop soul from The Weeknd! This one's bookended by great couple of collaborations with Daft Punk – and yeah, the gentle sounding, yet plenty soulful and sometimes moody Weeknd vocals are as perfectly paired with the neon electro sheen of Daft Punk as you'd imagine – and this one also features appearences by Future, Kendrick Lamar and Lana Del Rey, a diverse roster for sure, and it's a testament to The Weeknd's depth and far-reaching taste that they all fit right into the overall vibe. Titles include "Starboy", "I Feel It Coming", "Reminder", "Party Monster", "Attention", "Sidewalks", "Love To Lay", "A Lonely Night", "Die For You" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
