✨✧ Jose JamesBlack Eyed Susan (orig, IG Culture 4 beat refit) ... 12-inch
Brownswood (UK), 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful beautiful work from Jose James – a tune that's fragile, soulful, and completely wonderful! There's a classic quality to the cut that may have you running back to your hipper jazz vocal albums of the 70s – but the tune is Jose's own, and delivered with a beautifully laidback vocal approach. And in case you doubt the contemporary pedigree, the IG Culture mix has a crackling London sort of feel – one that really energizes the tune! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Motown, 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". LP, Vinyl record album

Naima FaraoDots ... LP
Beat Machine (Italy), 2024. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99
A really unique album, and one that's a bit hard to describe on words (which means you might want to run over to the bandcamp link!) – as Naima Farao has all the jazzy currents you might expect from her first name, but also opens up here in a blend of cosmic soul, spacey instrumentation, and all sorts of other really cool touches – a bit like some of the post-jazz London experiments in recent years, but with some deeper soul currents in the mix on most numbers! Naima's got a breathy way of singing at times, which really sparkles with the instrumentation – yet she can then swing into a deeper style that's equally powerful, and which takes off and runs on the best tunes. The set features guest appearances from Ilhan Ersahin and Napoleon Maddox – and titles include "Vortex", "Heirloom", "Run", "Buoyancy Of Water", "Process", "Roll Back In", and "Increase The Light". ✨✧ LedisiTurn Me Loose ... CD
Verve, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn great work from Ledisi – an artist who hasn't missed a beat since moving to the majors a few years back – sounding almost funkier than ever before, thanks to some impeccable production and razor-sharp instrumentation! Ledisi's vocals are beyond challenge – old school deep soul we first came to love years back, on her classic indie sets – and this time around, the instrumentation seems even rawer than we remember – as if there's an old school funky combo backing the singer up on some tracks, mixed with other numbers that have some fuller backings, but still really retain their edge. Production is by a crew with some really great ears for this sort of sound – Rex Rideout, Raphael Saadiq, and others – and from the songwriting credits, it's clear that Ledisi's still very much in charge of the overall shape of the album. Titles include "Runnin", "Everything Changes", "Turn Me Loose", "Love Never Changes", "Knockin", "Goin Thru Changes", "I Need Love", "Say No", "Please Stay", and "Trippin". CD

✨✧ MusiqJuslisen ... CD
Def Soul, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great bit of NuSoul from Musiq Soulchild – warm, beat-heavy, and with a sinewy vocal style that reminds us a bit of D'Angelo, but harder. The album's Musiq's second – and it's another proud statement from the current Philly underground, the kind of modern day soul that's transforming the face of R&B, and winning back tons of listeners who'd departed the urban scene years ago. The back cover shows Musiq kicking back with a set of fat 70s headphones, digging in the crates while listening to a pile of 8 tracks – and we couldn't think of a better image to sum up the sound of this one! Titles include "Time", "Future", "Newness", "Solong", "Bestfriend", "Something", and "Dontchange". CD

Terri WalkerUntitled (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Def Soul (UK), 2003. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $52.99 59.99
The debut release from Terri Walker – an incredible soul singer set to take the world by storm! The album's got a stripped-down, syncopated approach that's quite nice – lots of laidback beats and keys coming together in a style that's clearly informed by hip hop, but without any of the cliches that have crept into so much other modern R&B work. Terri's vocals are great too – really honest and not overdone, set to simple and straightforward lyrics that give the album an instantly appealing quality. Titles include "Brand New Day", "Drawing Board", "Love Fool", "Ching Ching", "Dirty Weekend", "4 Feet Under", "Da Business", and "It's All Good" – plus "Guess You Didn't Love Me", featuring a guest appearance by Mos Def! Brand New HeaviesNever Stop – The Best Of The Brand New Heavies ... LP
Import (Germany), 1990s/2000s. New Copy 2LP ... $41.99 45.99
A killer collection of work from a group who are very near and dear to our hearts – a soulful combo who emerged from the UK scene at the end of the 80s, and really helped bring back a classic sort of warmth to soul music! Brand New Heavies were a funk combo at the core, but they were also graced with two great female singers – initially Jay Ella Ruth, then the mighty N'Dea Davenport, the singer who really helped the group soar over here on the US scene! These days, well-crafted, non-programmed soul music is a common thing – but were it not for BNH, and their contemporaries Incognito, the style might have fallen out of favor altogether – especially during that early 90s era when R&B was still pretty heavy on keyboards, samples, and beats! This double-length set is filled with classics from the group – titles that include "Spend Some Time", "Don't Let It Go To Your Head", "Never Stop", "Dream Come True", "Saturday Nite", "People Get Ready", "You Are The Universe", "Midnight At The Oasis", "Mind Trips", "You Can Do It", "Brother Sister", and their great take on "Apparently Nothin" – and their hip hop cut "Bonafied Funk" with Main Source and Large Professor. Dinner Party (Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder, & Kamasi Washington)Dinner Party – Dinner & Dessert ... CD
Sound Of Crenshaw, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
The great CD release of two previous albums from this hip contemporary combo – two vinyl albums back to back on a single CD! Both albums have a fantastic blend of jazz, contemporary soul, and hip hop – served up by a group who can really get the sound right – Terrace Martin on keyboards and alto, Robert Glasper on keyboards, Kamasi Washington on tenor, and 9th Wonder on beats! Vocals on most tracks are by Phoelix, who really helps give the instrumentation some focus – yet the jazz component of the record is never buried under the lyrics, as the players get plenty of space to do their thing – with a vibe that's a bit like some of Glasper's Black Radio project, yet given much more the kind of cool Crenshaw vibe that we've loved in Martin's previous records. All four artists are credited with songwriting and production and you can really hear that balance in the sound – on tracks that include "Love You Bad", "Sleepless Nights", "The Mighty Tree", "Freeze Tag", "Luv U", "Sleepless Nights", and "From My Heart & Soul". The Dessert album offers up a reworked version of the core record – with titles that are partly remixes, partly reworks – with guest appearances from Snoop Dog, Cordae, Herbie Hancock, Reuben Vincent, and others! A really nice side project from the excellent Mourning A BLKstar collective – spare sounds with a different vibe than the work of the larger group, but which comes across with an equally righteous sound overall! LaToya Kent handles the vocals, and the backings are often very spare – electronics, tapes, beats, and touches of guitar and keyboards – creating a much moodier soundscape, and one that almost shows a darker future than the larger group have given us in their music. Titles include "Crawl On Yer Belly", "Burns", "Sugamilk", "Git Ready", "Portabelly", "Dirt", "Gimlet", and "The Current History Of Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

Def Soul, 2000. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Classic-styled soul from Musiq Soulchild – his debut set for Def Soul, and the start of a great run of mellow grooves! As you might guess from the compressed wording of the title, the tunes here have a great set of flow – a laidback, kicked-back sort of sound that's not nearly as full-on or swaggering as other male soul of the time. Musiq's even more relaxed than D'Angelo here – and the tunes are awash in warm keyboard lines and mellow bubbling beats – all with plenty of room for Musiq to stretch out in some sweeeeeet vocal lines. Titles include "Speechless", "You & Me", "Just Friends (Sunny)", "Girl Next Door", "Mary Go Round", "Love", "Poparatzi", and "You Be Alright". LP, Vinyl record album

Decon, 2010. Used ... $3.99
Hip hop soul from Nneka – a fresh perspective given her diverse background, and a fresh sound, too – rolling from rhymes to soulful singing over gritty soul beats and live band instrumentation. The facts of Nneka's life, born in Nigeria and raised in Germany – are bound be the lead of most intro bio and reviews, and it's a interesting stuff that should be noted – but we're just as impressed with her ability to mix rhymes and singing so deftly. She's a natural for both, and Concrete Jungle is well worth the trip. Titles include "Showin' Love", "The Uncomfortable Truth", "Mind Vs Heart", "Heartbeat", "Come With me", "Africans", "Suffri", "Fro Africa 2 U", "Walking", "Focus", "God Of Mercy" and more. CD

Otis Junior & Dr DundiffHemispheres ... CD
Jakarta (Germany), 2017. New Copy ... $1.99 15.98
A duo who really take the hemispheres in their title seriously – as lyrics and vocals are all by Otis Junior, and the album's spare rhythms and instrumentation are from Dr Dundee! Otis is a hell of a frontman – as he's got this laidback, raspy style that really fits the open, honest quality of his words – lyrics that are spacily spoken as much as they're sung – in this haunting style that really fits the crispy core elements provided by the doctor. The duo are surprisingly strong together – really supporting each other in the best way, and not lapsing into too-familiar beats-n-lyrics cliches – on titles that include "Hemispheres", "Bubble", "Why Can't You Just Come For Conversation", "The Mixture", "3 Winds", "Bye From Space", and "Under My Skin", which features a guest appearance by Jim James. Another Taste are a real group, not just a producer with beats, keyboards, and samples – and you can definitely hear their live interaction throughout – an extra-special sort of warmth that really knocks things out of the park, and which easily makes the album stand next to our favorites from the Capitol Rare generation! A record without much in the way of notes – but one that features snaking saxophone solos over some mighty nice keyboards – all in a way that provides this very cool 21st Century update of laidback fusion modes from the past! Rhythms are often laidback and midtempo – usually beats, but sometimes with more live energy on the drums – showing that these guys could be a jazz combo if they wanted, but are often more interested in spinning out these great instrumentals that bridge the worlds of contemporary soul, jazz, and hip hop. Titles include "C'Est Pas La Chute", "Soule", "Between Us", "Pasitos Jaguari", "Krawall", "Okusho", and "Con Mis Perros En La Niebla". (New Grooves, Neo Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Great remixes from Monday Michiru's Routes album – and a set that really continues her strong tradition of collaboration with some of the hippest talents of the underground! As with some of our favorite Michiru remixes from years back, the tracks here are more re-imaginations or re-recordings of her music than anything else – hardly just new beats or keyboards added into the mix, and often versions that have the tunes taken in rich new directions – always with the soulful, positive energy we love in Monday's originals. Collaborators include Part Time Heroes, Jephte Guillame, and Carlos Mena – and titles include "The Right Time (Yellowtail rmx)", "Hung Up (PTH sprung up mix)", "You Don't Know (feat Part Time Heroes)", "Philosophy Road (PTH hideout mix)", "The Right Time (Jephte's tet kale mix)", and "Don't (Casamena backyard mix)". The production is lush, in a way that has all these sonic elements swirling together with a very cosmic vibe – sometimes upbeat, but often midtempo, which seems to really suit Roba's vocals wonderfully – and allow them to hit this richness that's very unique, with a lower-end range that really emphasizes her uniqueness as a singer! The production is nice and spacey, but never sleepy – a crisp edge, even when laidback – as keyboards wrap their arms around some of the rougher edges in the beats, cradle them nicely, and set up this wonderful presence for the vocals! Titles include "Is It Just Me", "The Black Surf", "Downs Got Up", "Wait Til Fate", "God Willing", "Feelings Don't Feel", "No Wish", "Fews & Trues", and "Yeah Really". Erykah BaduWorldwide Underground (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Motown, 2003. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics, but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than most who that followed her lead post-Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth tones, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You". LP, Vinyl record album

A pivotal album from the early 90s – one that not only furthered the rebirth of live funk instrumentation at a time when ditigal elements dominated the scene – but also really opened up that mode to a whole new generation of hip hop as well! At a time when the music was all about the samples and beats, Brand New Heavies took it back to the generation before – and provided live instrumentation for a host of fantastic talents – a legendary lineup that includes performances from Main Source, The Pharcyde, Black Sheep, Kool G Rap, Gang Starr, and Masta Ace – all young and at the top of their game, with a quality level that alone would make the album great – then really sends it over the top when paired with the instrumentation! The whole thing's amazing – still maybe yet to be topped in such a style – and titles include "Who Makes The Loot", "It's Getting Hectic", "Wake Me When I'm Dead", "Soul Flower", and "Bonafide Funk". Dudley's second full length for Stones Throw under his own name – third overall, counting his debut as Declaime – and one of the most surefooted, soul-steeped Madlib productions of the era! Again, Madlib wisely leans on warm funk and soul beats and samples to back Dudley, but it's a little lighter on the murk and grit this time, better to match Dudley's more confident vocals. This set is one of their key early releases – a brilliant set from Hil St Soul – a singer who just grew and grew in popularity after this release. Hil's got a sweetly jazzy style – a bit like some of the underground NuSoul singers in the US in at the same time, but maybe with some of the crispness of the London scene too – and she sings here with some nicely restrained arrangements that have a good focus on beats and lots of warm instrumentation over the top, never too hype, just right for her personal style. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. CD
