Meshell NdegeocelloMeshell Ndegeocello Presents The Spirit Music Jamia – Dance Of The Infidel ... CD
Shanachie, 2005. Used ... $4.99
An incredible departure for Meshell Ndegeocello – a jazz-based project with a sound that's different than any of her other work! The album shows a depth that we never expected – a richly instrumental mode that's only touched by vocals on a few songs – and which is mostly territory explored by Meshell on bass, along with other jazz players that include Michael Cain on keyboards, Jack De Johnette on drums, and sax work from Kenny Garrett, Don Byron, Oliver Lake, and Oran Coltrane! 3 of the album's 8 tracks feature vocals – by Sabina, Cassandra Wilson, and Lalah Hathaway – and the tunes are all long, languid, and laidback – drifting along through some really moody territory. Titles include "Mu-Min", "Al Falaq 113", "Dance Of The Infidel", "The Chosen", "Luqman", and "Heaven". CD

✨✧ Benny SingsMusic ... CD
Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Benny Sings has a scruffy sort of look on the cover here – but his music is wonderfully smooth and soulful – every bit the sound that we've loved on all of his previous records, and which makes Benny maybe one of the under-discovered talents of the global scene of the past decade or so! Benny's got a way of putting together songs that are simple and tuneful, often with relatively light instrumentation – but which have a way of getting his charms across right from the start, like he's some sort of top-shelf Cali talent from the 70s, just cooking up cool little tunes in his home studio on Fender Rhodes. Titles include "Here It Comes", "Nobody's Fault", "Break Away", "Sunny Afternoon", "Run Right Back", "Miracles", "Music", and "Lost Again". CD

Shelley Nicole's blaKbusheShe Who Bleeds ... CD
Red Butterfly Music, 2003. Used ... $4.99
A very righteous set of tracks from Shelley Nicole and her Blakbushe ensemble – a lot more powerful than some of the other underground soul sets of recent years, and done with lots of full-on instrumental touches on keyboards, guitar, and bass – making for a style that recalls some of the best recordings of the Black Rock scene in years past. Shelley herself plays bass, theremin, and sings in a style that's got a lot of bite – delivering lyrics that are a lot more political than usual for an album of this nature, and reminding us of all the power bubbling under in the New York scene during the late 70s and early 80s. Looks like that power's returned – and with a vengeance – on tracks like "3/4 Sh*t", "America's Secret", "Spiritual Revolution", "Scorpio Chile", and "Cheatin Baby Daddy". CD

Nathan AdamsAudio Therapy ... CD
Tribe (UK), 2013. Used ... $6.99
Warm audio therapy from Nathan Adams – an artist who works here in a sublime blend of club and soul – with a style that maybe recalls the best of the Naked Music generation – or maybe the tightest work of Peven Everett too! There's a warm glow to most of the album – but not in a way that's too smooth or slick – just seductively poised to groove along with Adams' great lyrics! Most tunes have a positive feel that fits the upbeat sound of the music – and titles include "Melody", "Don't Break My Heart", "Fade Away", "Chasing Love", "Stay Away", and "Afraid Of The Dark". Dee AlexanderWild Is The Wind ... CD
Blujazz, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". ✨✧ Carleen AndersonTrue Spirit ... CD
Virgin, 1994. Used ... $3.99
The lovely lady from the Young Disciples steps out on her own – making the move to a solo act that so many other Brit female soul singers were doing at the time! Luckily, Carleen's got a voice that really holds up to such a shift – stretching out here on some wonderful tracks that show that she's a lot more than just a voice in a soundsystem, and a richly talented artist with a rich heritage in soul music supporting her work! Includes the tracks "Mama Said", "True Spirit", "Morning Loving", "Ain't Givin Up On You", "Secrets", "Let It Last", and "Feet Wet Up". CD

ArchivesCarry Me Home – A Reggae Tribute To Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson ... CD
Monsterrat House, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A record that comes as a real surprise – a concept that might not work if you were to just read the title – but one that opens up beautifully on the album! Part of the record's success might be the fact that The Archives are a group from the same Washington DC scene that once was home to Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson – and they work in a 70s roots-styled approach that has more than enough righteous currents to fit the political messages that were so important in the music of Gil Scott-Heron! The approach is never forced, and we're amazed at how well things slide into the gently-stepping groove without having to sacrifice the lyrical impact at all. The set features versions of "Winter In America", "Rivers Of My Fathers", "Cane", "Revolution Disguised As Change", "Song Of The Wind", "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul", "It's Your World", "Peace To With You Brother", and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". ✨✧ Erykah BaduBaduizm ... CD
Universal, 1997. Used ... $2.99
A landmark debut from the mighty Erykah Badu – a record that really set the world on fire when it first appeared – and which continues to blow our minds all these many years later! There's a simple, straightforward grace to the album that comes through immediately – as Erykah tries to forge new ground for soul music, but does it by taking a few steps backwards – not into retro modes, but more in a way that focuses on the core vocal, songcraft, and right instrumentation that can make a special soul record such a standout. She does a great job of both avoiding easy commercial paths, or some of the temptations to embrace other then-contemporary genres – which has made the work of some of her colleagues seem a bit dated. The record defines a whole new style of expression – "Baduizm", if you will – one in which Erykah sings with a depth that stretches back through a century's worth of jazz, soul, and gospel influences – but works a groove in a stripped-down and forward-thinking mode that sets the pace for countless Neo Soul singers to come! Titles include "Certainly (Flipped It)", "Next Lifetime (radio)", "On & On", "Appletree", "No Love", "4 Leaf Clover", and "Sometimes (mix #9)". CD

Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Blue Mandala ProjectNotes From The Outer Soul ... CD
Pietro Vincenti (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Beautiful work from Blue Mandala Project – an Italian group led by pianist Pietro Vincenti, an artist we really loved for his older Brazilian-styled sounds in the group Quintetto X! The vibe here has some of the sound of the older group, but there's also maybe more funk and soul elements at play – given that Pietro sometimes plays sweet electric keyboards, and that the album features soulful lead vocals from Mimma Pisto – a female singer who provides English vocals for most of the tracks! The core approach is still jazz, but the vocals really give the whole thing a very personal vibe – and all songs are written by Pietro, both music and lyrics – with titles that include "Cold Blue", "The Human Journey", "Lonely Girl", "The Trip", "Breve Amore", "Murcia", "Kali", "South Shout", and "Summer Afternoon". Bluey (Incognito)Leap Of Faith ... CD
Dome (UK), 2013. Used ... $14.99
No need for a leap of faith where Bluey's concerned – as we've been loving his music with Incognito for many many years, and we're more than happy to hear the man on his own! The vibe here is every bit as soulful and righteous as the best Incognito work – but there's also a more personal sound, too – especially since Bluey's on lead vocals on every track – quite a change from before, as he often lets other singers take the lead! Turns out, Bluey's a hell of a lead singer on his own – with this warm and slightly raspy style that really fits in wonderfully with the grooves – which are heavy on Bluey's own guitar, plus keyboards and other instrumentation from Ski Oakenfull and Richard Bull. If you like Incognito as much as us, there's plenty to love here – and titles include "Stronger", "Leap Of Faith", "Sky", "Keep Myself Together", "Ain't Nobody's Business", "Got To Let My Feelings Show", and "Live Like A Millionaire". Miles BonnyLumberjack Soul 2 ... CD
Innate Sounds, 2021. New Copy ... $9.99
It's been almost a decade since the first Lumberjack Soul album from Miles Bonny – and in that time, he's grown tremendously – both as a singer and musician, and as an artist who's really in command of his sound! Miles' voice still has the raspy charm we loved before, but the overall setting is far richer and more complex – maybe in a way that owes a lot more to jazz than before, although still with just the right inflections of beats – which are balanced with all these really creative sonic touches from Bonny – shapes and sounds from trumpet, piano, moog, and some other sources that are a bit hard to figure out – mixed together wonderfully. Titles include "Day Alone", "Go With The Sun", "In This World", "Soulful Melodies", "Release & Expand", "Wantu", and "Mother Of Love". (Deep Funk, Neo Soul) CD

Brand New HeaviesTBNH ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". CD

Harriet BrownMall Of Fortune ... CD
Innovative Leisure, 2019. Used ... $1.99
A really great second set from Harriet Brown – one of those "recorded at home" soul records that may well set the tone for a generation to come! Brown's got this always-skittish, almost-nervous approach to his music – one that often echoes the lyrics of the tunes, and their openly personal sense of anxiety – this pent-up, wrapped-up mode that always feels like it's going to explode – and which maybe feels even more so because Brown put the whole project together himself, away from any companionship in the studio. Apart from two guest vocal appearances, the whole thing is Harriet's own – beautifully so – with titles that include "Retail Therapy", "Shower Up Saddle Up", "Window Shopping", "Holy Place", "Method", "Driver's Seat", and "Bag Away". ✨✧ Sheree BrownMessages From The Spirit – The Collective (with bonus track) ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
The deepest, most righteous music we've ever heard from Sheree Brown – and that's saying a lot, given how much we loved her first few solo records back in the day! Brown's got this rich vision here that really makes for a hell of a record – a set of tracks inspired by her younger years, but which are getting a mature handling here – with vocals that are maybe more heartfelt than in years, and set to arrangements that take all the warm, jazzy currents of Sheree's roots, and mix them with contributions that change up nicely from track to track – really fleshing out the spirit of the music as the album moves on. The lyrics are wonderfully uplifting – and titles include "Can I Leave Next Friday", "I Wanna Thank You Love", "Beautiful Girl", "Get Up Stand", "Take A Walk With Love", "Sorry Bout Bein A Ghost", and a remake of the Minnie Riperton classic "Les Fleur". CD features the bonus track "Spirit" – recorded live at Conway Recording studio. (Soul, Neo Soul) CD

Kizzy CrawfordWay I Dream ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 10.98
A fantastic debut from Kizzy Crawford – a soul singer who will most likely be huge in years to come – thanks to an approach that seems to effortlessly cross borders and boundaries! Kizzy's lyrics are personal, but positive – and the music is a blend of soul instrumentation with acoustic elements – at a level that makes it clear that Crawford's not just trying to be another neo soul diva, or retro soul vocalist – but instead is really ready to address the world with a sound that's all her own! Songs are all original, and instrumentation changes up with a nice sense of variety, but without ever making us think that Kizzy can't make up her mind – on titles that include "Golden Brown", "Progression", "Dive", "Real Love", "The Way I Dream", "Waiting Game", and "Adlewyrchu Arnaf". ✨✧ D'AngeloVoodoo ... CD
Virgin, 2000. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet and gritty soul from D'Angelo – who takes a huge step into deeper territory on Voodoo – and it's one of the most monumental records of its time! On one level, Voodoo works as a nicely stripped-down session with a very classic soul feel. Gone are the overzealous flourishes that sometimes overwhelmed his earlier songs, and in their place are some sweetly crafted vocal parts with a classic Marvin Gaye/Al Green feel. That warmth is probably what made Voodoo a massive popular success – but what makes it such a creative triumph are the darker undercurrents – hinting at a troubled soul struggling for spiritual truth. One of the rare cases in popular music when great art became music for the masses! Titles include "Left & Right (feat Method Man & Redman)", "The Line", "Spanish Joint", "Africa", "Feel Like Makin Love", "The Root", "Playa Playa", "Devil's Pie", and "Greatdayndamornin/Booty".
