✨✧ Tom Misch & Yusef DayesSome Kinda Music ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Tom Misch and Yusef Dayes definitely make some kinda music here – a sweet blend of jazzy elements, contemporary soul, and a spacious, spacey vibe that resonates strongly with some of our favorite recent sounds from the west coast! The album's on Blue Note, but it's a bit different than some of the label's recent projects – even those that are more soul-based – as the vibe here is heavy on keyboards, vocals, and guitar from Misch – set up with drums from Dayes, in a style that's funky but mellow – all tripping out nicely, with help from a variety of guests along the way. Titles include "Tidal Wave", "The Real", "Sensational", "I Did It For You", "Julie Mangos", "Kyiv", "Last 100", and "What Kinda Music" – plus "Lift Off", with guest work from Rocco Palladino – and "Nightrider", with guest work from Freddie Gibbs! Naked Music NYCWhat's On Your Mind? ... CD
Om Records, 1998. Used ... $9.99
An instant classic – warmly soulful tracks from the Naked Music crew, with lots of heavy beats, jazzy electric keyboards, and deep female vocals that drive the whole thing home! More of a soundsystem project than a full group affair, but the record is surprisingly coherent – a trippy blend of NuSoul tracks, held together wonderfully through a sublime underground approach to soul! Titles include "If I Fall", "It's Love", "3 AM", "Through Tryin", "What's On Your Mind", "Too Late", and "Show Me". CD

Bastards Of SoulSpinnin (with bonus download) ... LP
Eastwood Music Group, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
A really special sort of record from the Bastards Of Soul – a Texas group, but one who work in this great mix of deep soul and slight southern rock touches – at a level that almost makes this album feel like some lost nugget from the vaults of Capricorn Records! Vocals are by male singer Chadwick Murray – not the lovely lady on the cover – and there's a cool crossover vibe here that takes us back to work by 70s genius talents like Eddie Hinton or Dan Penn, with guitar lines that are strong, but balanced by these warmer organ currents that really underscore the more soulful elements in the music – as do the laidback rhythms on the tunes. Titles include "I've Got The Key", "Funky Ham & Eggs", "Back To The City", "Spinning Out Of Control", "The Way It Should Be", "The Waiting Time", and "Your Love Has Turned My Heart To Bitterness". Rhian BensonGold Coast ... CD
DKG Music, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Nice! 14 tracks including "Words Hurt Too", "Say How I Feel", "Stealing My Peace Of Mind", "Soul Boy", "Shake It Away", "A Moment In Shine", "Gold Sky", "Young Girl" and more. CD
(Out of print, digipack case has some edgewear & a sticker remnant on the cover.)

Yodyful Music, 2016. Used ... $3.99
Yolanda Rabun's got a great groove here – a sound that's even tighter, warmer, and jazzier than on her previous album – with all the poise and class you'd expect from her image on the cover! The instrumentation's nice and laidback – plenty of keyboards, and less of the beats that you might expect – with gentle rhythms served up in a nicely tripping style that lets Rabun really open up her vocal flow! The set features great remakes of "Rocket Love", "Be My Husband", and "Feel Like Making Love" – alongside the originals "Believe In Love", "Hold On To Your Dreams", and "Yes". CD

Nathan AdamsAudio Therapy ... CD
Tribe (UK), 2013. Used ... $13.99
Warm audio therapy from Nathan Adams – an artist who works here in a sublime blend of club and soul – with a style that maybe recalls the best of the Naked Music generation – or maybe the tightest work of Peven Everett too! There's a warm glow to most of the album – but not in a way that's too smooth or slick – just seductively poised to groove along with Adams' great lyrics! Most tunes have a positive feel that fits the upbeat sound of the music – and titles include "Melody", "Don't Break My Heart", "Fade Away", "Chasing Love", "Stay Away", and "Afraid Of The Dark". Dee AlexanderWild Is The Wind ... CD
Blujazz, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". AndreusStreet Troubadour (US version with bonus track) ... CD
Dialogue/Lightyear, 2002. Used ... $1.99
Compelling work from Andreus – an underground Chicago singer with a very unique approach! Andreus is really trying for the "street" in the title of this one – blending a smoother NuSoul mode with some heavier and more political influences. The result is a mixture of R&B, hip hop, and some classic styles that help situate the album in a Chicago soul trajectory that stretches back to the early days of Curtom. Titles include "Who Am I", "Daddy Please", "Child Of Life", "Hey Young World", "Mary Ann", "Ghetto Music", and "For The Love Of Money". The US version of the CD also includes the bonus UK mix of "Mississippi". CD

Motown, 2002. Used ... $1.99
A great second album from India Arie – sweet, smooth, soulful, and one we like even better than the first! The style is wonderful – a mix of warm vocals, spare production, and acoustic guitar – which gives the set a folksy quality that really offsets the smooth backings nicely. Songs are very well written, and linked together with a sensuous musical approach that makes the whole album drift nicely along – beating with the heart of underground soul set, but handled with a high level of class! Titles include "Beautiful Surprise", "Little Things", "Growth", "Talk To Her", "Headed In The Right Direction", "Good Man", "Complicated Melody", and "The One". Limited CD features the bonus track "Interested". CD

Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". Erykah BaduBaduizm ... LP
MCA, 1997. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
A landmark debut from the mighty Erykah Badu – a record that really set the world on fire when it first appeared – and which continues to blow our minds all these many years later! There's a simple, straightforward grace to the album that comes through immediately – as Erykah tries to forge new ground for soul music, but does it by taking a few steps backwards – not into retro modes, but more in a way that focuses on the core vocal, songcraft, and right instrumentation that can make a special soul record such a standout. She does a great job of both avoiding easy commercial paths, or some of the temptations to embrace other then-contemporary genres – which has made the work of some of her colleagues seem a bit dated. The record defines a whole new style of expression – "Baduizm", if you will – one in which Erykah sings with a depth that stretches back through a century's worth of jazz, soul, and gospel influences – but works a groove in a stripped-down and forward-thinking mode that sets the pace for countless Neo Soul singers to come! Titles include "Certainly (Flipped It)", "Next Lifetime (radio)", "On & On", "Appletree", "No Love", "4 Leaf Clover", and "Sometimes (mix #9)". LP, Vinyl record album

Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ... LP
Motown, 2008. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99 24.98
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". The 9th Wonder produced single "Honey" is an unlisted bonus track. Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Beady BelleAt Welding Bridge ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2010. Used ... $2.99
A beautiful album from Beady Belle – the group and wonderful vessel for the seductive, entrancing voice and songs of Beate S. Lech – possibly their best yet! Beady Belle have made deeply engaging blend of modern jazzy soul and beautiful mood music for most of the outs, taking a step back just a bit from the slightly more crossover ready songs of Belvedere album into more intimate, yet just was inviting material on At Welding Bridge. Beate's vocals are as sultry and hypnotic as ever, singing with warmth and genuine emotion in elegant, but not overly precious way – and the instrumentation suits her perfectly. Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer or other keys, some truly excellent guitar, clarinet, flute, electric bass and percussion frame the vocals on most tracks, and some of the tracks were cut at home, which we believe, given the warmth and intimacy. Titles include "Diamond In The Rough", "Come Home", "The Storm", "Runaway Mind", "Bird's-Eye View", "Turn Back Time", "Press Of Canvas", "Leeway", "Ambush" and "Walk On Air". CD

Blue Mandala ProjectNotes From The Outer Soul ... CD
Pietro Vincenti (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Beautiful work from Blue Mandala Project – an Italian group led by pianist Pietro Vincenti, an artist we really loved for his older Brazilian-styled sounds in the group Quintetto X! The vibe here has some of the sound of the older group, but there's also maybe more funk and soul elements at play – given that Pietro sometimes plays sweet electric keyboards, and that the album features soulful lead vocals from Mimma Pisto – a female singer who provides English vocals for most of the tracks! The core approach is still jazz, but the vocals really give the whole thing a very personal vibe – and all songs are written by Pietro, both music and lyrics – with titles that include "Cold Blue", "The Human Journey", "Lonely Girl", "The Trip", "Breve Amore", "Murcia", "Kali", "South Shout", and "Summer Afternoon". ✨✧ Brand New HeaviesTBNH ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". CD
