Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". BrigetteStarlite Lounge ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2005. Used ... $7.99
Lovely work from singer Brigette – recorded with a sound that's warm, sunny, and soulful – and helped out by some nice jazzy touches from guitarists Dori Caymmi and Heito Pereira, and flautist Hubert Laws! There's a quality here that reminds us of some of our favorite jazzy soul of the 70s – tight, but never too slick – and classy, yet still always wonderfully soulful in the lyrics. Plus, the tunes have some great Braziliany touches that really bring out the west coast vibe in the music – skipping around with a sense of lightness and life that we really love! Titles include "Much Too Much", "Star", "My Oh My", "Somehow", "Betcha", "Take Me (rmx)", "Agua De Beber", "Is It Love", and "What Would You Say". CD

DWH (Deeper Wider Higher)Follow Me ... CD
Counterpoint (UK), 2006. Used ... $2.99
The long awaited debut album from DWH – a UK combo we've been digging on singles, finally stepping into the light with their first full length statement! DWH have a deeply righteous sound that blends together jazz with bits of soul – all served up in a blend that's never forced, and never done with any studio tricks or gimmicks. The style here is really organic – warmly-played soul jazz at the core, on trumpet, vibes, and keyboards – topped with really soulful lyrics by a female singer who reminds us of some of the best vocalists working in the 70s soul jazz years, but who comes across with some slight British soul touches! As with other projects on Counterpoint, there's a real sense of care and sensitivity throughout – just the right balance to give the record a depth that should keep us playing it for years to come. Titles include "Latter Rains", "What Would You Choose", "Soundtrack", "Darkside", "Still Here", "Beauty For Ashes", "Seveneight", and "Broken Peaces". Also includes the remixes "Darkside (Blackbeard rmx)", "Beauty (Eddy & Yanna rmx)", and "Still Here (Antonio Ocasio rmx)". CD

Adriana EvansAdriana Evans ... CD
Loud/BMG, 1997. Used ... $5.99
A late 90s effort from this west coast singer, on the cusp of the NuSoul movement, and with a nice nod in that direction, betraying her jazzy pedigree. With some great production courtesy Dred Scott, who had released a nice hip hop LP a few years earlier, that was largely slept on, this Lp has a sound that definitely touches of some of the finer moments of 70s sophisticated soul, a breath of fresh air when it came out and still sounding great today. Titles include "Swimming", "In The Sun", "Love Is All Around", "Heaven", "Hey Brother", "Trippin", "I'll Be There", "Love Me", "Seein Is Believin", and "Reality". (Soul, Neo Soul) CD

GenaiHeaven On Earth ... CD
Expansion/One Way (UK), 1999. Used ... $4.99
An excellent album of smooth jazzy soul, produced with a sweet British style – and a range of influences that runs from Sade, to Loose Ends, to the Brand New Heavies, in a nice mellow 80s vibe – warm and wonderful throughout, with an easygoing groove that really holds things together! Genai's a female singer with a warm vocal approach that slides into the jazzy instrumentation well – and the tunes are a nice mix of originals and classic covers that are refitted here with more of a contemporary vibe. Titles include "Pretend", "Runaway", "Heaven On Earth", "The Biggest Part Of Me", "Africa", "Temperamental Winds", "Human Nature", and "Someday Out There". CD

Shannon Harris & UrbanicityNew World Reveal-A-Solution ... CD
Urbanicity, 2004. Used ... $4.99
A bold statement from this ambitious Chicago group – a righteous assemblage of musicians working in a tradition that's partly linked to the spiritual jazz of an earlier AACM era, but which is also keenly conscious of the underground soul of groups like Fertile Ground! At its core, there's a spiritual jazz vibe running through the set – but as the work moves on, a number of other styles come into play – expanding the vision of composer Shannon Harris, and really fleshing out the message-heavy nature of the set. We'd only heard 12" singles from Urbanicity in the past, so we were really impressed by the depth and scope of this set – and there's a few tracks on here that easily rank with the most righteous soul jazz we've heard since the 70s – especially the vocal numbers! Titles include "Keep On Reachin", "Coming Together", "Speak Softy & Walk Tall", "Afro Cosmo", "Cato Conspiracy", and "Mizimu: Ancestral Spirits". CD

✨✧ IncognitoTribes, Vibes, & Scribes ... CD
Verve/Talkin' Loud, 1992. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning little set from Incognito – the group's first full album on Talkin Loud records, and a set that's head and shoulders above their earlier jazz funk from the 80s! The sound here has a real "instant classic" quality – not just because it's dripping with the best references from the jazzier side of 70s soul (think Fantasy Records at its best!) – but also because it's so well put together, with a sense of instrumentation that's tight, yet an overall groove that's relaxed and fairly spontaneous – something that was quite rare at the time the record was released! Bluey is at the height of his powers here – stepping strongly into a run of great work that would last for well over a decade – and other key figures include Maysa Leak on vocals, Kevin Robinson on trumpet, and Graham Harvey and Peter Hinds on keyboards. Titles include a killer remake of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing", plus "Change", "Colibri", "Magnetic Ocean", "Closer To The Feeling", "Tribal Vibes", "Pyramid", and "I Love What You Do For Me". Monday MichiruNexus ... CD
Artist Share, 2008. Used ... $8.99
Brilliant work from Monday Michiru – one of her jazziest records to date, and one of her most soulful too! There's a really deep feel going on here – light years past the basic soul and dancefloor grooves that Monday was cutting a decade ago, with a musically evolved sound that's really tremendous – as full and rich as it is simple and straightforward – filled with righteous themes and that extremely positive vibe we've always loved in Monday's music! The keyboards on the record are handled by Dave Kikoski on a number of tracks – really warm and fluid, and wrapping up Michiru's vocals wonderfully – and other instrumentation includes acoustic bass, trumpet, and some earthy percussion, which makes for a nice contrast with the Fender Rhodes on some tracks. The record's one that makes us proud we've been following Monday's work for so many years – really pleased to see it coming this far forward! Titles include "Genetic Imprints", "Sands Of Time", "On & On", "Weak", "Your Eyes", "Candy", "Sometimes", "Suite 610", and "Epiphany". CD

Monday Michiru & Toshiko AkioshiJazz Conversations – The Other Side Of Monday Michiru ... CD
Victor (Japan), 2015. New Copy ... $13.99
The other side of Monday Michiru – or, more appropriately, the early side of the great soul singer – given that her roots in jazz go very far back, to the time when she was the child of two very famous jazz musicians! This set has Monday reunited with her mother – the legendary pianist Toshiko Akioshi – who works exclusively on piano, in this wonderfully pointed, introspective style – while Monday both sings in a jazz style, and plays flute as well – an instrument she first used on record when she was about ten years old. The reunion is a wonderful one – and while Toshiko's every bit as great as you'd expect, we find ourselves falling in love with Monday even more than before – as her handling of the mellower material is beautiful, and opens up an even more deeply expressive side of her vocals than before. The record's got a bit of added bass and drums at points – and titles include "Frog", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Love & Life", "New Girl In Town", "Broken Dreams", and "Ain't Gonna Ask No More". N'DambiLittle Lost Girls Blues ... CD
Cheeky I, 1999. Used ... $3.99
One of the best new soul records we've heard in years! An independently produced first effort – filled with rich warm jazzy production, and a sweet mellow soul sound that brings to mind some of our favorite records of the old days. N'Dambi has an incredible voice – and although she first came to fame as a backup singer with Erykah Badu, she's well on her way to becoming one of the best soul stars of the next generation. This album's a perfect blend of contemporary production with a classic approach to writing soul songs – and it's a pleasure to be stocking it before the whole thing gets snatched up by a major label (and probably remixed to add a lot of crap that will make this version the preferred one!) This one excites us as much as the first albums by Omar, The Young Disciples, and The Brand New Heavies – and has us having faith in soul music again. Tracks include "Deep", "Picture This", "Soul From The Abyss", "The Sunshine", "The Meeting", and "Lonely Woman". CD

Kassa OverallI Think I'm Good ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
We really loved Kassa Overall's debut, but we're completely blown away with this full length set – as the record's got a visionary sound that's completely his own – a really new mix of jazz, soul, and funk that's bound to make Kassa one of the most important talents in years to come! Overall sings and plays drums – the latter of which are used in very open, creative ways – amidst a keyboard-heavy set of instrumentation that also includes work from Sullivan Fortner on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Vijay Iyer on Fender Rhodes, Joel Ross on vibes, and Theo Croker on flugelhorn! Kassa finds a way to bring in these guests, and others – but always at a level that never changes the core style too much – so that it's always clear we're always in very personal territory, with a style that's poetic one minute, funky the next, and always extremely beautiful. Titles include "Please Don't Kill Me", "Visible Walls", "Was She Happy", "Sleeping On The Train", "Landline", "Darkness In Mind", and "The Best Of Life". CD

Reel PeopleRetroflection Remixed ... CD
Reel People (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The warmly collaborative spirit of the original album – with guest vocals by Angie Stone, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, Omar and others – makes this kind of a companion piece a natural fit. The remixers wisely hew to the gliding soul with jazzy touches that make Retroflection such a strong, standout work, while bringing in elements of club soul, jazzy samba, and timeless disco, depending on the producer/remixer. Titles include "Don't Stop The Music (Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix)", "I Want To Thank You (Sebb Junior Remix)", "Thinking About Your Love (Da Brownie Remix)", "Keep It Up (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)", "I'm In Love (Buscrates Remix)", "Buttercup (Terry Hunter Main Club Mix", "Always There (Scott Diaz Funk Excursion)", and "Can We Pretend (Tall Black Guy Samba Remix)". Jill ScottBeautifully Human – Words & Sounds Vol 2 ... CD
Hidden Beach/Sony, 2004. Used ... $3.99
The long-awaited "real" second album from Jill Scott – finally out 4 years after her massive debut! Fortunately, the passage of time has done nothing to dampen Jill's genius – and the sound, style, and overall quality of this set is every bit as great as we could have hoped. The production is a bit fuller at times, but never cloying or overly mainstream – and still very much in the lean, mean, stripped-down Philly groove that Jill brought to the masses with incredible force. Jill's got help from a host of great Philly talents too – including Andre Harris, Jazzy Jeff, and Larry Gold – all of whom work with Jill in a sinister blend of beats, keys, strings, and soul! Titles include "I'm Not Afraid", "The Fact Is", "Bedda At Home", "Cross My Mind", "Family Reunion", "Can't Explain", "Not Like Crazy", "Rasool", and "My Petition". CD

Warren WolfReincarnation ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Vibist Warren Wolf has always been way more than just a straight soloist in jazz – and here, he takes that role further by bringing in work from two different singers – vocalists Marcellus Shepard and Imani Grace Cooper, each of whom sing a few songs on the set! This isn't a straight vocal album, but instead a jazz set that happens to have vocals – and there are plenty of instrumentals that allow the fantastic sounds of Warren's vibes to flow out in this magical way – usually with a gentle groove that's augmented by excellent work from Brett Williams on Fender Rhodes – a player whose sense of understatement really matches the energy of the leader. Titles include "Vahybing", "For Ma", "In The Heat Of The Night", "The Struggle", "Livin The Good Life", "Sebastian & Zoe", and "Come & Dance With Me" – plus a great remake of "For The Love Of You". Verve, 2003. Used ... $6.99
A sweet young jazz singer – steeped in the traditions of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dianne Reeves, striking out on her own in a really solid debut album! The set's got a warm, jazzy feel – lots of keyboards and piano in the backings, but done in a way that lifts up the voice of Lizz on a pillow of soul and spirituality. Tracks build from slow beginnings to a rich array of tones and colors – done in a style that's emotive, but subtly so. Titles include nice covers of "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" and "Afro Blue" – plus "Soon As I Get Home", "Salt", "Fire", "Eternity", "Lead The Way", and "Silence". CD

Wonderful work from Hajime Yoshizawa – a deeply soulful album with universal appeal! Hajime's one of the current Japanese master of the jazzy dancefloor groove – and he's wisely working here with some great English language vocalists, who really help open his music up to a wider audience, and only more deeply root it in a soulful dancefloor tradition. Vocals on the set are by Carol Crosby, Vanessa Freeman, Norinha, and Nina Miranda from the group Smoke City – and even the instrumental tunes have a sound that links them strongly to a global tradition that runs through the current London and Compost scenes. Really great all the way through – the kind of all-solid album we're really getting behind! ✨✧ ZoFreelance ... CD
Chapter 3hree Verse 5ive Music, 2006. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The greatest work so far from Zo – a set that's awash in amazing keyboards, all played with a sound that almost puts Zo at the level of 70s greats like Webster Lewis or George Duke! At some level, there's a really classic Lonnie Liston Smith sort of groove going on here – one that's flowing and righteous, with lots of warm undercurrents. But at another level, there's some of the sharper edges and more snappingly spacey tones of some of Zo's contemporaries – particularly those from his hometown scene in Detroit. Yet the blend here is far different than either of those two references might imply – a melding of modes with whole new results, and an overall sound that's different even than Zo's already great previous work. There's a real deepening of spirit going on here – a more sophisticated approach that shows that Zo's really been improving his craft over the past few years, and taking his talents for writing and arranging to a whole new level! Many numbers have some sort of a groove, but there's also an equally jazzy sensibility to many tracks too – as well as a tremendous sense of power that really builds as the album rolls on. A few numbers feature vocals by Tiffany Paige, but most of the set is instrumental – with titles that include "The Watch", "Welcome Home (parts 1 & 2)", "Time Table", "Rudiment", "Overnight Experience (parts 1 & 2)", "Snare Junction 2.0", "Yooou", and "Inertia". VariousBrownswood Bubblers Volume 13 ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Instead, this territory is much richer – plumbed by DJ Gilles Peterson via his Worldwide Radio series, and the always-great work of the Brownswood label – an imprint that's dedicated to finding the best sort of genre-crossing, category-defying music we've always loved here at Dusty Groove! The tracks within are proof that in the right hands, soul, jazz, and other styles know no boundaries – or limits of imagination – on cuts that include "Ley Lines" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Nuketown" by Tiana Khasi, "Something My Heart Trusts" by Yazmin Lacey, "Ideas" by Sonnymoon, "No White God" by Oscar #Worldpeace, "Move" by Lynda Dawn, "Sailor" by Wu Lu feat Binisa Bonner, "Only Trying 2 Tell U" by Puma Blue, "Jury Judge Executioner" by Alxnder London, and "Continue The Fun (space version)" by Mauskovic Dance Band.
