Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". Dayme ArocenaSonocardiogram ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
The best we've heard so far from Dayme Arocena – a Cuban singer who's got a great way of reaching out from Havana with a sound that can circle the globe! The music here has a blend of jazz, soul, and Cuban roots – but all delivered together in a style that's completely unique and without cliche – really showing a maturity in Dayme's vocals since the previous record, and in her overall conception of a song! Instrumentation is by her core quartet, recorded live and openly, in a really unfettered way that instantly matches the spirit of Dayme's vocals too. The whole thing is tremendous – a record that lives up to the truest promise of the Brownswood label – with titles that include "Nangareo", "Porque Tu No Estas", "Yemaya", "Plegaria A La Lupe", "Homenaje", "Para El Amor Cantar", and "As Feridas". Da LataBirds ... CD
Da La Music (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". Julie Dexter & Khari SimmonsMoon Bossa (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2006. Used ... $7.99
A wonderful, bossa-inflected jazzy soul surprise from UK-bred/Atlanta-based diva Julie Dexter and ATL-fellow Khari Simmons of Jiva – an effervescent batch of tunes that meld the best modern soul styles of both artists with a mutual affection for bossa rhythms! The duo pulls off the blend with what feels like an effortless grace – Julie's vocals are light, soulful and often quite jazzy in way which expands nicely on her previous work – with a backdrop of bass, Rhodes and B3, Moog, occasional horns and percussion. Nice! Tracks include "Moon Bossa", a sweet cover of Everything But The Girl's "My Baby Don't Love Me", "Salt Sea", "Venusian", "The Dove", "Salt Sea", "Venusian", "The Dove", "Sea And Sky", "Promises", "Wave" feat Kenny Latimore and more, plus 3 bonus remixes: "Venusian (Aquariana rmx)", "The Dove (Jiva remix)" and "Fooled By A Smile (Incognito remix)", plus "Moon Bossa (piano outro)". Bryony Jarman-PintoCage & Aviary ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Very cool work from Bryony Jarman-Pinto – a singer who's way more than just a singer – partly because she often uses the studio to harmonize alongside herself, which brings a very hip vibe to her sound! Bryony's maybe tied most strongly to jazz, but there's a heck of a lot going on here too – straighter soul lyrics overall, often with a vibe that's personal and positive – given a kick by skittish drums, unusual keyboard lines, light colors from acoustic guitar, and some guest sax lines from Ben Watt! The lead vocal often has this inflection that emphasizes some jazz roots, even though the music is never straight jazz at all – and there's a very special, very compelling quality to the record that makes us think we'll be hearing a lot more from Bryony in years to come. Titles include "Threads", "Sour Face", "All About Life", "Sun Kissed", "Sweet Sweet", "As I've Heard", "Saffron Yellow", and "Day Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

JhelisaWhirl Keeps Turning (radio edit, voc, Outside rmx)/Secret Place (drum & bass) (CD single) ... CD
Dorado (UK), 1994. Used ... $0.99
More in the acid jazz vein than some of her great laster NuSoul efforts, but still a wonderful single, with a slick jazzy feel that reminds us nicely of the mid 90s. The Outside mix gives it a jazzier spin, that we really dig, while "Secret Place" moves at a tempo that's a shade too slow for our taste. CD

Jarrod LawsonJarrod Lawson ... CD
Jarrod Lawson, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99
A stunning debut from Jarrod Lawson – a singer we fell in love with right away – and who we'd rank right up there with some our favorite mellow soul artists of the 70s! Yes, the cover's got a look that's more indie rock – but Jarrod's got this righteous vibe and sense of flow that seems to tie together distant strands of influence – from Marvin Gaye to Gil Scott Heron to jazz singers like Al Jarreau, Kurt Elling, or Mark Murphy! Backings are jazzy, but with a focused, soulful groove – warmed up by keyboards, but kept fresh with lots of live instrumentation that really matches the rich sense of inflection in Lawson's voice – an amazing range, but one that's never overstated, overdone, or overused. All the tracks are originals – and the record's one that you'll be spinning for years to come! Titles include "Sleepwalkers", "Walk In The Park", "Redemption", "Needed", "Everything I Need", "All That Surrounds", "Spiritual Eyes", and "Together We'll Stand". CD

Monday MichiruNexus ... CD
Artist Share, 2008. New Copy ... $12.99
Brilliant work from Monday Michiru – one of her jazziest records to date, and one of her most soulful too! There's a really deep feel going on here – light years past the basic soul and dancefloor grooves that Monday was cutting a decade ago, with a musically evolved sound that's really tremendous – as full and rich as it is simple and straightforward – filled with righteous themes and that extremely positive vibe we've always loved in Monday's music! The keyboards on the record are handled by Dave Kikoski on a number of tracks – really warm and fluid, and wrapping up Michiru's vocals wonderfully – and other instrumentation includes acoustic bass, trumpet, and some earthy percussion, which makes for a nice contrast with the Fender Rhodes on some tracks. The record's one that makes us proud we've been following Monday's work for so many years – really pleased to see it coming this far forward! Titles include "Genetic Imprints", "Sands Of Time", "On & On", "Weak", "Your Eyes", "Candy", "Sometimes", "Suite 610", and "Epiphany". CD

Monday MichiruRoutes – Live In Japan (DVD) ... DVD
Geneon (Japan), 2006. New Copy ... $13.99
One of the few DVDs we've ever seen of the great Monday Michiru – a performer who's even more enchanting in a live setting than in the studio! Monday works here with a great small combo– Henry Hey on keyboards, Genta on drums and percussion, and Alex Sipiagin on trumpet and flugelhorn – a lineup that really follows the deeper, more jazz-based style of her later work – as she opens up on titles that include a great mix of older gems and new material. Includes versions of "Sunshine After The Rain", "The Right Time", "I Couldn't See", "You Make Me", "Touch The Sky", "Intuition", "I'm Still Here", "Remember", "Hung Up", "Play It By Ear", and "Philosophy Road". Monday Michiru & Toshiko AkioshiJazz Conversations – The Other Side Of Monday Michiru ... CD
Victor (Japan), 2015. New Copy ... $13.99
The other side of Monday Michiru – or, more appropriately, the early side of the great soul singer – given that her roots in jazz go very far back, to the time when she was the child of two very famous jazz musicians! This set has Monday reunited with her mother – the legendary pianist Toshiko Akioshi – who works exclusively on piano, in this wonderfully pointed, introspective style – while Monday both sings in a jazz style, and plays flute as well – an instrument she first used on record when she was about ten years old. The reunion is a wonderful one – and while Toshiko's every bit as great as you'd expect, we find ourselves falling in love with Monday even more than before – as her handling of the mellower material is beautiful, and opens up an even more deeply expressive side of her vocals than before. The record's got a bit of added bass and drums at points – and titles include "Frog", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Love & Life", "New Girl In Town", "Broken Dreams", and "Ain't Gonna Ask No More". Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
We really loved Kassa Overall's debut, but we're completely blown away with this full length set – as the record's got a visionary sound that's completely his own – a really new mix of jazz, soul, and funk that's bound to make Kassa one of the most important talents in years to come! Overall sings and plays drums – the latter of which are used in very open, creative ways – amidst a keyboard-heavy set of instrumentation that also includes work from Sullivan Fortner on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Vijay Iyer on Fender Rhodes, Joel Ross on vibes, and Theo Croker on flugelhorn! Kassa finds a way to bring in these guests, and others – but always at a level that never changes the core style too much – so that it's always clear we're always in very personal territory, with a style that's poetic one minute, funky the next, and always extremely beautiful. Titles include "Please Don't Kill Me", "Visible Walls", "Was She Happy", "Sleeping On The Train", "Landline", "Darkness In Mind", and "The Best Of Life". CD

A great full length set from The Pendletons – a group who've given us some great singles in recent years, but who seem to sharpen up their sound even more in an extended setting! These guys started out in more of a lean 80s funk mode, but have really warmed up their groove – so that both the instrumentation and vocals have a rock solid quality that results in some really strong soul tunes – still funky, but with a richer, deeper quality that almost feels like when some old school funk act would go for a midtempo stepper or a mellower groove! The set features guest work from Howard Johnson and Gizelle Smith – both of whom really slide into the Pendletons sound – and titles include "Blessings For The World", "You Do You", "No Regrets", "Life To Me", "Running Away", "There Goes My Mind", "Keep It Working", and "2 Steps Away". Pieces Of A ManMade In Pieces ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
You've gotta love a band who names themselves after a Gil Scott Heron album – even if their approach is somewhat different than the legendary records by the man himself! Pieces Of A Man hail from London, and are wonderfully soulful overall – but they also work in a pastiche-oriented style hinted at by the cover – grabbing elements of earlier modes, pulling them apart, and recombining them in a very contemporary sound – one that uses jazzy horns, keyboards, and layered vocals in a really great way – rising, moving, and righteously stepping forward with a real sense of power – and a quality that definitely sets the group apart from the rest. Amp Fiddler joins the group on a remake of the Scott-Heron tune "Lady Day & John Coltrane" – and other titles include "Easier", "Listen", "Running", "Grits", "Climb Down", "Drifting", and "Nothing To Lose (part 1)". Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The warmly collaborative spirit of the original album – with guest vocals by Angie Stone, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, Omar and others – makes this kind of a companion piece a natural fit. The remixers wisely hew to the gliding soul with jazzy touches that make Retroflection such a strong, standout work, while bringing in elements of club soul, jazzy samba, and timeless disco, depending on the producer/remixer. Titles include "Don't Stop The Music (Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix)", "I Want To Thank You (Sebb Junior Remix)", "Thinking About Your Love (Da Brownie Remix)", "Keep It Up (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)", "I'm In Love (Buscrates Remix)", "Buttercup (Terry Hunter Main Club Mix", "Always There (Scott Diaz Funk Excursion)", and "Can We Pretend (Tall Black Guy Samba Remix)". Ether (UK), 2004. Used ... $7.99
An incredible record – one that's steeped in the best London sounds of the past few years, and which stands as a summation of the groove-based genius that's emerged from that city's scene! Silhouette Brown is the team of Dego and Kaidi Tatham – working in a sparkling jazzy groove that draws on all their histories as 4Hero, Neon Phusion, Agent K, and New Sector Movements – but which somehow manages to push the sound even more, and come up with a style that's incredibly warm and soulful overall. Part of the real strength of the set is vocalist Deborah Jordan – the third member of the group, and a key component in the cohesive, song-based grooves of the set. Deborah's vocals are incredible – somehow managing to be both cosmically grooving, yet also soulfully down to earth at the same time – and working with Dego and Kaidi, she's emerging here as one of the strongest new soul voices we've heard so far this century! One you'll be playing for years – and a perfect set of tunes that includes "Whose In Charge", "Looking Back", "Time Waits For No One", "Spread That", "Monday's Coming", "Just A Little More", and "Check It". New takes on Philly soul classics – served up by maestro Butch Ingram, who's been making the city a musical powerhouse for decades! Butch borrows more from the old school Sigma Studios approach than on his own work from back in the day – but the instrumentation also includes some more contemporary touches, especially on keyboards – shifting the overall sound a bit more towards modern R&B styles, while still keeping plenty of roots in the older Philly mode! As you might guess, most tracks here are older Philadelphia classics – mostly done as instrumentals, with a smooth jazz finish – but with space for some occasional vocals here and there. Titles include "Back Stabbers", "Let's Groove", "Where Are All My Friends", "When Will I See You Again", "My Love Don't Come Easy", "Me & Mrs Jones", and "The Love I Lost". (Soul, Neo Soul) CD

Schema (Italy), 2015. New Copy ... $16.99
A hell of a singer, working here with some wonderful grooves from Timo Lassy – an artist we've really loved for his own jazzy projects in the past! Joyce Elaine Yuille has this style that's very classic, and very groovy – jazz-based, with a nice rasp in her voice that really brings out some of the more soulful qualities in the music – and able to write her own lyrics, too – which makes for a wonderful record that's full of fresh sounds at every turn! Lassy's music is wonderful too – tightly snapping on the rhythms, but never forced – and with a jazz current that's a nice change from other contemporary soul production, which might have been added to the record with a bigger label. But clearly, the real star of the show is Joyce – a talent that will definitely be huge in years to come – a rock-solid singer and songwriter who may well turn out to be the female equivalent of Gregory Porter. Titles include "Come With Me", "Tryin Times", "Chaos", "It's Madness", "Make Right", "Welcome To My World", "Follow The Sun", and "Late I Rise". (Vocalists, Neo Soul) CD

A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Instead, this territory is much richer – plumbed by DJ Gilles Peterson via his Worldwide Radio series, and the always-great work of the Brownswood label – an imprint that's dedicated to finding the best sort of genre-crossing, category-defying music we've always loved here at Dusty Groove! The tracks within are proof that in the right hands, soul, jazz, and other styles know no boundaries – or limits of imagination – on cuts that include "Ley Lines" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Nuketown" by Tiana Khasi, "Something My Heart Trusts" by Yazmin Lacey, "Ideas" by Sonnymoon, "No White God" by Oscar #Worldpeace, "Move" by Lynda Dawn, "Sailor" by Wu Lu feat Binisa Bonner, "Only Trying 2 Tell U" by Puma Blue, "Jury Judge Executioner" by Alxnder London, and "Continue The Fun (space version)" by Mauskovic Dance Band.
