A long-overdue return to form for Roctober – one of our favorite magazines in the 90s and 00s, and a publication that always gave us plenty of bang for our buck! That tradition certainly continues here – as the hefty zine runs for well over 120 pages – stuffed to the gills with the mix of punchy prose and comics that always made it such a standout! This time around, subjects include Linda Gail Lewis, Lady Saw, The Shaggs, Divine, Exuma, Jobraith, Ozone, Nardwuar vs Marc Maron, Will Glover, and Curtom soul legend Holly Maxwell – all with the sort of presentation you won't find anywhere else. Great to have Roctober back – and nice to see someone still invested this strongly in the zine format too! Magazine

That's a lovely photo of Dolly Parton on the cover – and the issue's got a very personal tale of the way that Dolly's music influenced the life of one writer! And as usual, the issue's got the nicely diverse array of cultural forces – the artwork of Fred Tomaselli (with plenty of cool images of his reworkings of New York Times front pages), the compositions of Tyondai Braxton, a long interview with Octavia Butler, the acoustic Powers/Rolin duet, global instrument maestro Peter Larson, an unpublished interview with The Clean, a look at the visual art of Clean drummer Hamish Robert Kilgour, on tour with Crazy Doberman, Portland's Neo Boys, a farewell to Tom Verlaine, and lots lots more – all in full color throughout. Maybe the most visual issue of Maggot Brain to date – as the issue features a look at the music photography of Michael Lavine, rare images of Pavement from Gail Butensky, and the wonderful artwork of Mingering Mike! Heck, there's even a review of Irreversible Entanglements that's filled with great photos of the group – but don't worry, as there's plenty of text too – including a discussion of prog rock with the great Matt Berry, a look at Philly guitarists Rosali Middleman and Emily Robb, and the diary of legendary hobo Bill Aspinwall! Plenty more too – including a great tape section, the Visuaels collective, Lea Bertucci, the band Cindy, and 75 Dollar Bill. Magazine

Ohio Players and Smokey Robinson are the twin cover stars this time around – and the inside features a long article on Smokey, and one on Sugarfoot of the Players! But there's also an even wider range of goodies this time around – looks at Joe Cuba, Johnny Lytle, Gene Paul, Tribe Records, Javelin, and even Tortoise – plus the always-great little bits, all those cool features on old records, and even the ads, which always help keep us turned on to something great! Beautiful production, lavish color, and still one of the hippest magazines around. Magazine

That's Lucy Sante on the cover – and she not only delivers a small piece of her own at the front of the magazine, but is also the focus of a nice long article penned by Sasha Frere Jones, which is then followed by an interview with Sante too! And there's way more here too – a look at 30 years of Sleater Kinney, the contemporary Detroit jazz scene, Chicago music legend Doug McCombs, painter Shonto Begay, the music of Dredd Foole, the teenage recordings of Teresa Leigh, gallerist Hudson, writer Jeff Noon, the cosmic soul of Shabazz Palaces, and lots lots more – all in vivid color throughout, with hardly any ads at all!
