Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
An ear-opening collection of work from the Peruvian scene of the late 60s – kind of a secret hotbed of Latin grooves, at least to our American ears – and one that was overflowing with some of the best elements of the small combo scene at the time! These guys clearly take a lot of inspiration from the groundbreaking material of the Joe Cuba Sextet, but they also move the music in lots of other directions too – sometimes with a bit of cumbia in the rhythms, other times more of a descarga mode, and almost always with a lot of jazz instrumentation over the top. There's plenty of the soulful elements you'd expect from the boogaloo reference in the title, but there's also lots more too – served up in a set of 28 gems from the Mag label, with titles that include "Kintos Instrumental" by Los Kintos, "Saludo Maracaibo" by Pedro Miguel Y Sus Maracaibos, "Cumbayea" by Mario Allison Y Su Combo, "La Guarachera" by Nico Estrada Y Su Sonora, "Malambo" by Los Diablos Rojos, "La Charanga Del Espacio" by Carlos Pickling Y Orquesta, and "Busco Una Chiquita" by Coco Lagos Y Sus Orates. ✨✧ VariousCumbia Beat Vol 3 – 21 Peruvian Tropical Gems ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A smoking third volume in this mighty look at the Peruvian cumbia scene of the 70s – music that often shares the same blend of guitar, percussion, and keyboards that makes some of the chica grooves from that time so great! The music here maybe owes a bit more to Latin sounds from up north, but the overall execution is very strongly in the modes put forth by Peruvian labels and producers at the time – often with great use of echo, especially in the guitar lines and keyboards – which make things sound very different than anything coming from Colombia or New York at the time! Yet there's also plenty of salsa elements at play here, too – the kind of percussive interplay that might be driving a Cuban or Puerto Rican combo – but nicely different in this setting too. Titles include "Chola Ingrata" by Los Ecos, "Manzana Verde" by Los Tantos, "El Saltamontes" by Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros, "La Manzanita" by Los Gitanos, "Descarga Oriental" by Los Orientales De Paramonga, "Larga Espera" by Los Sanders De Nana, "Lamento Moyobambino" by Sonido Verde De Moyobamba, and "La Narajadita" by Grupo Siglo XX. ✨✧ Noro MoralesMerengue A La Noro ... LP
RCA, Mid 50s. Very Good- ... $4.99
Noro Morales turns his rich talents to a set of merengue tracks – but the style's a lot different than you'd expect from the later sound of the genre! Instead, these cuts have a sly sinister sound, with kind of a snakey approach that adds a nice element to the music, and which keeps things in a lively 50s Latin mode. Tracks include "Tropical Merengue", "Lo Casaron", "Dona Ramona", "Siren", "The Twins", and "Can't Help It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has clear tape on all seams, tiny peel spot from sticker removal, aging, some pen on the back.)

Bongo Joe (Switzerland), 2023. New Copy ... $20.99 23.99
Coco Maria hosts a mighty cool radio show on BBC Worldwide – one that showcases all sorts of unusual Latin music hybrids that have come up over the years – including a good range of contemporary music, such as the tracks featured on this really well-done compilation! The music here has echoes of older Colombian, Tropical, and Afro-Cuban modes – but often served up with really inventive arrangements and instrumentation that turn things completely around – not in any sort of Latin remix style, but with more of a groove that shows what some of the more unusual Latin hybrid combos have been working on! Titles include "Children's Favourite" by Guess What, "Lepidoptera" by Iko Cherie, "El Bravo" by Candeleros, "Vamonos Cocos" by Raz Olsher, "Off The Groove" by Ronald Snijders, "Always Ready To Smile" by Juan Hundred, "Seguimos Sonriendo" by Acid Coco, and "Sacudete" by Lola's Dice. VariousPeru Selvatico – Sonic Expedition Into The Peruvian Amazon 1972 to 1986 ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
A really deep dive into the world of electrified Peruvian music – one that's put together not only with a killer collection of tracks, but also some really detailed notes that expand on this wonderfully unique hybrid of styles! Rhythms are often in the territory of cumbia from slightly farther north in the South American scene, but given all sorts of rootsier percussion touches – then mixed with electric guitar and thin keyboards, of the sort that you'd normally expect to hear on a 60s surf record – yet reworked here with a uniquely tropical vibe! The approach is often more instrumental than vocal, but you'll hear plenty of voices on the set too – sometimes just calling out to urge on the instrumentalists in the combos – on titles that include "La Hamaca" by Los Cisnes, "Humo En La Selva" by Los Invasores De Progreso, "Selva Virgen" by Los Zheros, "Descarga Royal" by Los Royals De Pucallpa, "Baila Bonito" by Ranil Y Su Conjunto Tropical, "El Pasito De Miriam" by Grupo Siglo XX De Rioja, "La Palmerita" by Fresa Juvenil De Tarapoto, and "Recordando Aguaytia" by Sonido Verde De Moybamba. A groovy little collection of funk rock tracks from Mexico – one that features a number of surprising grooves we'd never heard before! There's not much to go on from the cover, but most of these numbers appear to be from the late 60s or early 70s – and the overall vibe is heavy rock, but with a touch of soul – so that most of the rhythms end up coming out nice and funky! Titles include "The Funky Chicken", "Pais Tropical", and "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose (edit)" by Rabbits & Carrots; "Buscando La Felicidad" by Las Moskas, "Soul Sintonia" by Jae's Soul, and "Push & Pull" by Los Litos Barrientos. ✨✧ Roberto RoenaRoberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 6 ... LP
International, 1974. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A real breakthrough album from Roberto Roena and his Apollo Sound combo – a record that showed the world that this scrappy little group could stand head to head with the giants of the 70s salsa years! As on other records, there's a strongly percussive vibe throughout – bongos from Roena, plus timbales, conga, and other percussion – all topped by a great horn section that features two trumpets, tenor, trombone, and flute – all of whom hit some wonderfully jazzy moments at time, filling in the set with some great tropical shades and colors! Vocals are by Tito Cruz and Sammy Gonzalez, and a number of well placed percussion and horn solos on just about every track. Titles include "Traicion", "Cucarachita Cucarachon", "En Mis Rosales", "Que Se Sepa", "Ese Soy Yo", and "Herencia Rumbera". LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funky fusion with plenty of Latin touches – a really compelling set from the Nicaraguan scene of the 70s! The album's got the same criss-crossing of influences you'd hear in some of the best Bay Area projects of this type – no surprise since Jose Chepito Areas is a key member of the group on percussion – and there's a wonderful blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation, rootsy rhythms and free-thinking fusion – all of which make this sweet little set feel like some lost Impulse Records gem from the early 70s – particularly the label's releases that get a bit more global in their outlook! Alfonso Lovo plays loads of sweet Fender Rhodes, and also sings a bit – and titles include "Nueva Segiova", "Firebird Feathers", "Rio San Juan Drums", "Los Conquistadores", and "Tropical Jazz". CD

Tico, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Darn nice record by Tito – and one with a soulful 60s feel, hinted at by the "en Harlem" in the title. The record's not really a Latin soul album, but it's got certain groovy 60s elements that are done very very nicely. Includes great Latin versions of "Downtown" and "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", plus the tracks "Mi Trompeta Tropical", "Rumba En El Patio", "Bluesette", and "Carnaval En Harlem". Also features Santos Colon on vocals on a number of tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

A really cool, complicated set of grooves – Peruvian tropical at its best, with plenty of sweet guitar lines mixed in with lots of rootsy percussion! Kroffer Jimenez handles the lead vocals, and has this style that leaps one minute, swells the next – very individual, and kind of a perfect match for the offbeat qualities of the record – really setting things apart from standard chicha with the way he handles the lyrics! There's a completely unique feel to the set all the way through – and titles include "Oh Que Bueno", "Mala Mujer", "Fiesta En El Callejon", "Ritmo En Furor", "La Surenita", "La Tamalera", "La Planidera", "Como Baila Lucy", and "Elvira No Se Vira". Discomoda/Olindo (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 32.99
A smoking overview of work from the glory days of the Venezuelan scene – that moment when the nation's economy was opening the doors to rich new avenues of expression – including the important Discomoda label, which recorded all the gems on this set! The vibe is great – kind of a sideways take on NYC Latin modes of the years involved, but with some of the rootsier elements you might expect from Colombian work too – all presented with really stark, simple, no-nonsense production that really makes the music burst out loud! The selection of tracks here is great – all killer, no-filler, with a focus on the best Discomoda grooves from this stretch – 21 tracks that include "Mambo Tema" by Genaro Y Sus All Stars, "Disparo Goajira" by Nelson Y Sus Estrellas, "No Salgas De Tu Barrio" by Los Kenya, "Fiesta En Venezuela" by Los Satelites, "Lija" by Rodrigo Mendoza, "Mi Rendencion" by La Renovacion, "Analiza" by Principe Y Su Sexteto, "Juana Guaguanco" by Supercombo Los Tropicales, "Algo Diferente" by Johnny Sedes Y Su Orquesta, "Muneca" by Los Megatones De Lucho, "Pero En Caracas" by Sonora Venezuela, "Maracaibo" by Microbanda Marabina, and "Oye Como Suena"b y Orquesta Sonoramica.
