Gato BarbieriLatino America ... CD
Impulse, Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Fantastic 2 CD set compiling the tracks from Gato's first two LPs for Impulse, plus 5 previously unreleased tracks, and full length versions of tracks that were edited on the original albums. In case you don't know this stuff, it's amazing. Gato went down to Argentina to record the stuff, and it's an insane mix of nuevo tango, South American percussion, and Gato's wonderful reed work – which at this point has a hard edge with a lot of soul, and sounds a lot like Pharoah Sanders. Excellent stuff throughout, with a great booklet that tells the full story of the amazing sessions, and which really opens up the music. One of our fave reissues from Impulse! With the tracks "India", "Gato Gato", "To Be Continued", "Encontros", and "Encuentros". (Jazz, Latin) CD
(1997 digipak pressing with a hype sticker on the back of the case.)

✨✧ OpaBack Home – The Lost 1975 Sessions (plus bonus track) ... CD
Lion, 1972/1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wicked funky fusion from Opa – a Brazilian-inspired set, and one with loads of great electric moments! Although originally from Uruguay, Opa are best known for their Brazilian-tinged albums on the soul/jazz Fantasy records label in Cali during the mid 70s – great placement, given that their sound is a bit like Azymuth – with a similar mix of South American roots and contemporary electric grooves! This album is actually their first – captured in America before their two classics on Fantasy – and featuring a sharp quartet that includes legendary pianist Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards – a great talent who'd already made jazz and bossa records in the 60s – working here with George Osvaldo Fattoruso on drums, percussion, and flute – plus Ringo Thielmann on bass. The core trio is also joined for this record by percussionist Pappo Atiles – and although there's some light vocal touches, they've got that breezy style that was often used in Brazilian jazz at the time – almost more instrumental than vocal. Titles include a great take on Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte" – plus "Back Home (The Inner City)", "Brother Rada", "African Bird", "Goldenwings", "Brooklynville", and "One & One & One Is Two". CD also features the bonus track "I Came To This Country". (Jazz, Latin) CD

✨✧ Paquito D'Rivera with Arturo SandovalReunion ... CD
Messidor, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great set of Latin-tinged jazz – and the first recording that Paquito D'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval had made together in many years! The set's got the angular groove of Paquito's best work of the early 80s – tight Latin jazz, with plenty of percussion at the bottom – played out over longer tracks that allow plenty of space for him and Sandoval to solo, and which also feature piano by Danilo Perez and guitar by Fareed Haque. Titles include "Tanga", "Latin American Suite", "Claudia", "Body & Soul", "Reunion", and "Friday Morning". (Jazz, Latin) CD

✨✧ El ChicanoViva Tirado ... LP
Kapp, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff – and the beginning of a strong tradition of west coast funky Latin groups! El Chicano were one of a number of groups to emerge from LA of the 60s – rising forth on a wave of Mexican American pride to come up with a west coast version of the Latin Soul sound that had been emanating from Spanish Harlem a few years earlier. The group had an organ-heavy sound that first scored big on their rendition of Gerald Wilson's "Viva Tirado" – done as a single by the group with a stepping jazz beat that was missing from the earlier version, which worked great with their bubbly organ sound. The album was recorded to follow up the hit – done as a live set after hours at the Kabuki Sukiyaki Restaurant in south LA, and filled with tight jazzy covers 60s groovers like "Cantaloupe Island", "Eleanor Rigby", "Hurt So Bad", and "Coming Home Baby". The record's also got an amazing version of "Quiet Village" – and while it may not be as Latin as some of the group's later work, it's the beginning of a great tradition, and has a sound that was copied endlessly – but rarely matched! ✨✧ Black SugarBlack Sugar II (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sono Radio/Discos Monterey (Spain), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The second great album from Peruvian funk legends Black Sugar, and a set that's every bit as great as the first – perhaps even more so from a keyboard perspective, given that there's plenty of sweet organ and moog that filter through the set! The record's got the group sounding even tighter than before – mixing Latin rhythms with some great elements from American soul and funky fusion – all wrapped up nicely with a personal, heartfelt sort of approach that's really great. Victor Coco Salazar handles arrangements, guitars, and vocals – and the album features killer covers of "Valdez In The Country" and "Don't You Worry About A Thing" – plus the originals "Fuego", "Checan", "All Your Love", "Wake Up", and "I Want To Believe". ✨✧ Arturo O'Farrill & The Afro-Latin Jazz OrchestraCuba – The Conversation Continues ... CD
Motema, 2015. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant meeting of modes from the mighty Arturo O'Farrill – a set that combines a rich tapestry of Cuban styles with American jazz elements from the cubop years and beyond – all into a spacious double-length set of performances that brings together musicians from around the globe, all recording in Havana under Arturo's direction! The tracks are often ambitious, but never overly-complicated – and instead almost take us back to the clarity of vision that we first loved in the older Afro-Cuban experiments of Machito with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie – and the ability of those records to throw out many ideas at once, yet keep things very fluid and forward-moving at all times. Most tunes were written especially for the project – and titles include "Vaca Frita", "Second Line Soca", "El Bombon", "Just One Moment", "The Triumphant Journey", "Afro Latin Jazz Suite", "Guajira Simple", "Alabanza", "Blues Guaguanco", and "There's A Statue Of Jose Marti In Central Park". ✨✧ VariousCuba Son – Les Enregistrements Fondateurs Du Son Afro-Cubain 1926 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 20s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful overview of the Cuban musical style of son – the core Afro-Cuban blend that influenced generations of American Latin music in the 50s, 60s, and 70s – and which also laid the groundwork for salsa too! This package stretches back to the roots of the style on record in a really wonderful way – beginning with a full disc of acetates and aluminum recordings from the pre-war years, which may well be the rarest of the bunch – then moving forward for a full CD of pre-Castro work in the 50s, and a follow-up disc from the first few years of Revolution – when the music was still going strong! Given the scope of recordings, it's a bit hard to put our finger on one approach here – but we can definitely say that you'll discover the roots of many more contemporary Latin modes – as you dig into this set of 72 tracks, with work by artists who include Sexteto Bolana, Septeto Habanero, Conjunto Casino, Celia Cruz, Sexteto Tipico Habanero, Ignacio Pineiro, Conjunto Chapottin, Nelson Pinedo, Trio Matamoros, Abelardo Barroso, Beny More, Cachao, Cheo Marquetti, Los Compadres, Miguelito Cuni, and many others. ✨✧ Kip HanrahanDesire Develops An Edge ... CD
American Clave, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really unique blend of Jazz, Latin, and world music influences – and one of the first albums ever by Kip Hanrahan! Hanrahan's records are always better than we expect – and we really have to give him credit for mixing together so many diverse influences, especially in the early 80s, when not that many folks were doing things like this! The record features players that include like minded jazzers like Steve Swallow and Arto Lindsay, Latin percussionists like Jerry Gonzalez and Milton Cardona, and even the legendary Jack Bruce, who sings on a few tracks. The result is a captivating blend of all elements involved, served up with a nice warm production style that doesn't stifle, but which gels everything nicely. Titles include "Two", "Far From Freetown", "Trust Me Yet?", "Nancy", and "Sara Wade". (Jazz, Latin) CD

✨✧ Moncho Y Su BandaQue Bellas Son ... LP
Mucer/El Palmas (Spain), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record that has a bit of a late 60s look on the cover, but which instead comes from the Venezuelan scene at the start of the 80s – the first recorded effort from the very groovy Moncho Y Su Banda! There's a quality to the record that's almost out of time – small combo Latin work that's maybe more in the generation of Joe Cuba at some points, and which also recalls some of the fiercer Colombian creations of ten years before – particularly that moment when bigger New York influences were getting nicely shaken up on the South American scene! Titles include "Que Bellas Son", "Cruel Desilucion", "Mi Negrita", "La Envidia", "Las 12", "Olvidame", and "El Amor De Una Mujer". LP, Vinyl record album
