Eddie CanoSound Of Music & The Sound Of Cano ... LP
Reprise, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A pretty darn nice record – despite what you might think! Sure, the tunes are all pulled from the soundtrack to Sound Of Music – but Eddie Cano Latinizes each and every one of them, using his hard piano style and light percussion to turn them into jaunty groovers with a jazzy finish that will mostly make you forget where you've heard the tunes before! The whole thing's a delight – much more so than we expected – and the arrangements are spare, with plenty of room for jazzy soloing by Eddie. Titles include "An Ordinary Couple", "No Way To Stop It", "My Favorite Things", "Something Good", and "How Can Love Survive". LP, Vinyl record album

Chano PozoRumbero Mayor – An Overview Of The Legendary Afro-Cuban Conguero That Changed Latin Music & Jazz Forever ... LP
Grosso! (Spain), 1940s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99
A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. ✨✧ AmbergrisAmbergris ... LP
Paramount, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
A genre-busting batch of tunes from Ambergris – a group with styles that range from Memphis soul, to New York Latin, to some of the heavier sides of the underground rock scene of the time! The ensemble features Latin Soul maestro Larry Harlow on piano, organ, and percussion – working with a rock-based group that still has lots of jazzy touches on their instrumentation. Steve Cropper produced the set – but in New York, not Memphis – and the whole thing explodes with a rich range of musical influences, all bubbling together in one pot! Includes the funky rock tracks "Soul Food" and "Forget It I Got It", plus "Endless Night", "Sunday Lady", "Home Groan", "Chocolate Pudding", and "Gotta Find Her". (Rock, Latin) LP, Vinyl record album
(With Paramount inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and some marker on front.)

Ray BarrettoEl Ray Criollo ... LP
United Artists, 1966. Very Good ... $39.99
Ray Barretto just before the Latin Soul era – working in the excellent style he used on his Charanga Moderna album – a choppy groove that has plenty of weird twists and turns – always rhythmic, and always plenty darn soulful! The instrumentation here is a mix of small combo jazz and some of the charanga modes – with two violins, trumpet, trombone, piano, and timbales – plus vocals by Willie Garcia and Adalberto Santiago. The groove is nice and sinister on the best cuts – with that strange offbeat sound that Ray was bringing to Latin music at the time – an edge that was missing from earlier work, and which really helped set the scene for the boogaloo generation! Titles include "Rareza En Guajira", "Descarga Criolla", "Salsa y Dulzura", "Don Lengua", and "Yo Soy La Candela". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label mono promo. Cover has some edge wear.)

✨✧ Ray BarrettoRhythm Of Life – Ritmo De La Vida ... CD
Fania, 1982. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A cheesy cover, but a really top-shelf effort from Ray Barretto – one that has him standing strongly in the early 80s, at a time when most other leaders of his nature were beginning to falter! The record's still strongly in the Barretto salsa mode of the 70s, but it's also got a jazzy component that's really upfront in the mix – impeccable horns that come together with a fluid sound that soars each number over the top, and which also allows for a slight bit of solo expression alongside the lead vocals by Ray De La Paz. The tunes are longish, and the better numbers really open up in a joyous blend of rhythm and voice – almost salsa's take on the descarga style. Titles include "Indiferencia", "Granada", "Si No Eres Tu", "Amor Artificial", and "Manos Duras". CD
(Out of print, white back Musica Latina pressing.)

Ray BarrettoTogether ... LP
Fania, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
An early 70s killer from Ray – recorded right in the same era as most of his best albums! The feel here is strongly in the salsa mode – as Ray steps effortlessly from the Latin Soul era into a whole new decade of musical magic. And like the best of his 60s work, Ray's salsa cooks at a level that's far hotter than most of his contemporaries – with lots and lots of incredibly tight percussion, impeccable instrumentation, and even a more soulful approach to the vocals than usual. The album's got a short Latin soul groover called "Together", which has tight bass and a very catchy lyric; an extended Latin jazz version of "Tin Tin Deo", with some incredible piano that goes way way out over the groove; and plenty of other great Latin numbers, like "Invitacion Al Son", "Vive Y Vacila", "De Donde Vengo", and "Hipocresia y Falsedad". Mericana, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul! The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". ✨✧ CachaoCuban Jam Session In Miniature – Descargas ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 50s. Used ... $24.99
Landmark recordings from the Cuban scene of the late 50s – free-jamming descarga sessions led by bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez! The tunes on the set forever helped define the sound of Latin music – breaking down the more restrictive styles of earlier years, and giving the players free reign to jam and improvise over tightly crafted rhythmic patterns. Apart from Cachao's great work on bass, the set also features tenor by Emilio Penalver, trumpet by Armando Armenteros, and trumpet by Alejandro Vivar – on titles that include "Descarga Cubana", "Sorpressa De Flauta", "Pamparana", "Trombon Criollo", "Controversia De Metales", and "Guajeo De Saxos". This CD adds in a huge amount of extra tracks, too – for a total of 23 numbers in all! CD

✨✧ Cachao/Juliu Guiterrez/Fajardo/Nino RiveraComplete Cuban Jam Sessions (5CD set) ... CD
Panart/Craft, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 5 CDs ... $39.99
An incredible collection of records – a series of albums that forever changed the sound of Latin music around the world! These five sets were all cooked up in the changing Cuban scene at the start of the 60s – where musicians were getting looser and freer, with a sound that was quite different than the tighter big bands of a few years before – strongly influenced by changes in American jazz, including the jam session mode that was big on record during the 50s! In a way, these sides are an answer to that – as they feature all-star musicians coming together on long, more spontaneous tracks – often in smaller combos with heavy influence on rhythm, and lots of work from the key soloists on the dates. Each record has a different leader, but often some of the same musicians – and there's some especially great work on trumpet and tenor by other members of the group – at a level that went on to influence the small combo sound of artists like Joe Cuba, the grooves of the Latin Soul/boogaloo scene, and even the all-star American groups like the Alegre All Stars and Fania All stars in years to come. Records 1 and 2 feature leadership by Julio Gutierrez, record 3 is led by Nino Rivera, record 4 (the most famous) is led by bassist Cachao, and record 5 is led by flautist Fajardo. Great box set – all CDs in small LP-styled sleeves with original art – alongside a 96 page booklet of notes and photos! CD

✨✧ Alegre All StarsAlegre All Stars Vol 1 ... CD
Alegre, Early 60s. Used ... $24.99
A landmark album that shaped Latin jazz for years to come! The format of the set borrows heavily from the previous Cuban Jam Session LPs, but gives it a real New York twist that made the Alegre albums much stronger overall – and much more influential in a wider spectrum. A core group fo well-known players – Charlie Palmieri, Johnny Pacheco, Kako, Jose Chombo Silva, and others – come together in the studio magically – setting egos aside, and bringing their best work to the table in a hard-jamming style that defined the crackling jazz-based "descarga" style of the time. In addition to that, the production style has lots of conversation and hanging out sounds between the tracks, really setting the feel for the album with a great spirit that goes on to touch the music as well! A treasure that's still one of the best examples of the jam session at work – and with titles that include "Soy Feliz, "Ay Camino Y Ven", "Almendra", "Para Ti", and "Estoy Buscando a Kako". CD

The best we've heard so far from Dayme Arocena – a Cuban singer who's got a great way of reaching out from Havana with a sound that can circle the globe! The music here has a blend of jazz, soul, and Cuban roots – but all delivered together in a style that's completely unique and without cliche – really showing a maturity in Dayme's vocals since the previous record, and in her overall conception of a song! Instrumentation is by her core quartet, recorded live and openly, in a really unfettered way that instantly matches the spirit of Dayme's vocals too. The whole thing is tremendous – a record that lives up to the truest promise of the Brownswood label – with titles that include "Nangareo", "Porque Tu No Estas", "Yemaya", "Plegaria A La Lupe", "Homenaje", "Para El Amor Cantar", and "As Feridas". CandidoMaster ... CD
Chesky, 2014. Used ... $9.99
It's hard to imagine anyone making music for as many years as the legendary Candido – nor anyone who might still sound as great after so many decades in music! This set's definitely well-titled – as the congolero works here with a gorup of Latin jazz musicians, on an album that's one of his best in many years – a record that has maybe even more traditional Afro-Cuban elements than even Candido's work of the 50s, but which also brings in some strong jazz elements as well. Ray Santos arranged the set, and heads up the group – and the lineup includes tenor, flute, trombone, and trumpet – as well as some other percussionists next to Candido, and even a bit of tres and guitar as well – which further the rootsier side of the music. Candido's not totally on fire – maybe not a thousand-finger man here – but is still amazingly rock-solid, and really helps ground the whole record with his work on congas. Titles include "Arcason", "Salsibiri", "Conga Descarga", "Mulatacha", "Conga Blues", and "Lagrimas Negras". CD
