Chano PozoRumbero Mayor – An Overview Of The Legendary Afro-Cuban Conguero That Changed Latin Music & Jazz Forever ... LP
Grosso! (Spain), 1940s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99
A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. Ray BarrettoRican/Struction ... LP
Fania, 1979. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A great album of salsa tracks recorded at the end of the 70s – when Ray was returning to the scene after a prolonged hand injury kept him out of music for a while. Despite this time off, though, Ray's in top top form – coming back to basics with a really heavy groove, picking up right where his early 70s Fania sides left off! Lead vocals are by the tremendous Adalberto Santiago, and titles include "Ya Vez", "Al Ver Sus Campos", "Adelante Siempre Voy", and highly percussive groover "Tumbao Africano", which runs for over 7 minutes long! Julian BertBoogaloo (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Orfeon (Mexico), 1968. Used ... $14.99
Groovy boogaloo from late 60s Mexico – an album that's quite different than US sets of this nature! The rhythms definitely show a Latin Soul influence, but the overall execution is in a wider 60s groovy mode overall – with bits of mod jazz, soul piano, and more – all filtered beautifully into some very dynamic grooves! Bert's music has a style that's almost like some of the best Verve sides of the 60s – particularly those with a Latin and jazz crossover blend – and although there's some vocals on the record, the main focus is clearly the instrumental groovings of the group. Piano is especially nice, and comes across with some Ramsey Lewis-ish elements that really keeps things rolling and rollicking – and titles include "Zulianita", "Rosa Rosita", "Do The Boogaloo", "Oh Yeah", "Pete's Boogaloo", and "Manana Sera". Eddie CanoTaste Of Education ... LP
CP, 1972. Very Good ... $14.99
One of the most obscure albums from Latin piano giant Eddie Cano – recorded after his famous groovers of the 60s! The record's an odd one, but it's got some great moments – partly a Spanish language instruction record, but with music by Eddie – so that you'll have these spoken parts teaching spanish, while Eddie grooves along with some rhythms and piano. The mix is strangely compelling, and the album does feature two nice instrumentals too. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, and a small bit of pen.)
