✨✧ Willis JacksonBar Wars ... CD
Muse, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's a bit hokey – an obvious play on the Star Wars film that was running in theaters at the time of the record – but the sound is classic Willis Jackson at his finest, recorded in a style that's right up there with his best 60s work for Prestige! The group here is a quintet – with Willis on tenor, Charles Earland on organ, Pat Martino on guitar, Idris Muhammad on drums, and Buddy Caldwell on congas – and as on Earland's best soul jazz sides for Muse from the time, there's a real back-to-basics approach here, one that really gets away from Modes that Willis used on other labels in the 70s. Titles include "The Goose Is Loose", "Bar Wars", "Blue & Sentimental", "Later", and "It's All Right With Me" – plus two alternate takes! CD

✨✧ Willis JacksonBlue Gator ... LP
Prestige, 1959. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive early Prestige set from tenorist Willis Jackson – and just the kind of record that set him firmly in the soul jazz camp for the 60s! By the time of the set, Jackson had already won plenty of fame for his R&B-tinged work – but here, he stretches out a bit more, and really gets creative on his solos – working with a very hip group that includes Jack McDuff on organ and Wild Bill Jennings on guitar – both players making a similar shift in their music at the time. The tracks are lively, recorded with a bold, loud tone, and have lots of those great open-mouthed tones from Jackson – quite possibly a good reason for his "Gator" nickname! Tracks include "Blue Gator", "East Breeze", "The Gator Jumps", and "Try A Little Tenderness". LP, Vinyl record album
(Purple circle logo label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and bumped corners.)

✨✧ Willis JacksonCall Of The Gators ... CD
Apollo/Delmark, 1949/1950. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work as a leader from the great Willis Jackson – a tenorist known to most for his work on Prestige Records in the 60s, but who first began as a key crossover figure between postwar jazz and R&B! The music here definitely captures Jackson in that mode – great small combo sets recorded for the Apollo label up in Harlem – presented here with cuts that were originally issued as 78rpm singles, plus other unissued titles too – all making for a great overview of these early years! Most numbers were recorded under Jackson's own name – in a combo with Andrew Ford on trumpet, Bill Doggett on piano, and Booty Wood on trombone – but there's also a few done with vocalist Eddie Mack. The set features 16 tracks in all – and titles include "Blow Jackson Blow", "More Blues At Midnight", "Later For The Gator", "Chuck's Chuckles", "On My Own", "Dance Of The Lady Bug", and "Call Of The Gators". The album features Gator blowing in a group that includes Jack McDuff and Wild Bill Jennings on all cuts – plus bass by either Milt Hinton or Wendell Marshall, drums by Bill Elliott or Al Johnson, and some tasty added conga by Buck Clarke on a few cuts! The album's got a tight, yet laidback feel to – perfect kickback jam session material, in that classic Prestige soul jazz mode. Titles include "Contrasts", "Cookin Sherry", "Mellow Blues", and "Sportin". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the key records that helped cement the role of tenorist Willis Jackson in the soul jazz scene of the 60s – a record that not only features some killer Hammond from Jack McDuff, but also plenty of guitar from the great Bill Jennings! Unlike some other McDuff sessions, there's bass on this one – plus conga work from Buck Clarke on one cut, who really keeps things kicking. Titles include "The Man I Love", "Blue Strollin", "A Smooth One", and "Keep On A Blowin". LP, Vinyl record album

Acrobat (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mighty early work from the incredible Willis Jackson – one of most energetic and heavily soulful tenors ever to pick up a horn! These recordings are made of up some of Jackson's earliest recordings, including the legendary 1949 Mercury sessions with the Cootie Williams Orchestra, moves into work he did with for Apollo Records with the Bobby Smith Orchestra and others, and ends with some sessions with Ruth Brown. Explosive bebop and early r&b! 26 tracks in all: "Gator Tail (Parts 1 &2)", "Let 'Em Roll", "Steam Roller Blues" and more with Cootie Williams, "Can't Help Lovin' That Man", "Chuck's Chuckle", "Gonna Hoot & Holler Saturday Night" with Eddie Mack, "Gator's Groove", "Harlem Nocturne", "Daddy Daddy" and "The Tears Keep Tumblin' Down" with Ruth Brown, and much more! ✨✧ Willis JacksonLive Action ... LP
Prestige, 1965. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant concert date from Willis Jackson – the second half of material recorded during the Jackson's Action performance! Like his Prestige labelmate Jack McDuff, Willis Jackson could really cook in a live format – opening up his style a lot from studio albums, yet also not getting too sloppy, too overindulgent, or too solo-focused to lose the general groove of the tracks. This set's one of Jackson's finest in the live setting, and features his group with Frank Robinson on trumpet, Carl Wilson on organ, and Pat Azzarra on guitar. Tracks have a good jaunty soul jazz sound – and titles include "Blowin Like Hell", "Blue Gator", "Gator Tail", and "Annie Laurie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willis JacksonLoose ... LP
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Soulful tenor giant Willis Jackson is anything but loose on this classic set – as the album's a smoker, and one with a very tight sound! The group has Carl Wilson playing Hammond with a nicely heavy groove – alongside Frank Robinson on trumpet and Bill Jones on guitar – all held down by the drums of Joe Hadrick, in a combo that's a nice change from some of the more familiar Prestige Records combos! Titles include a very lively reading of "After Hours", plus the tracks "Y'all", "What Will I Tell My Heart", and "Secret Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willis JacksonMore Gravy ... LP
Prestige, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the greatest albums ever from tenor giant Willis Jackson – a really transitional set that has him moving past some of the more R&B rhythms of earlier records, and opening things up with a different sort of groove! The combo here features the great Carl Wilson on Hammond and Pat Azzara on guitar – plus the addition of Frank Robinson on trumpet, a talent who really makes the record sparkle! Joe Hadrick is a great talent on the drum kit, Sam Jones plays bass – and the set includes the excellent long groover "Nuthern Like Thuther'n" – which has an amazing spinning bossa groove that will never let you down – plus some other gems that include "More Gravy", "Fiddlin", "Pool Shark", and "Stuffin". ✨✧ Willis JacksonSoul Night Live! (Soul Night Live/Tell It) ... CD
Prestige, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic work by 60s tenor giant Willis Jackson – a fantastic live session done in 1964 in New York, one that was originally spread out over the course of 2 LPs – Soul Night Live and Tell It. The material is finally brought together as one release here, a monstrously great set of 14 tracks that feature Jackson's gutsy tenor hard-grooving with a combo that includes Frank Robinson on trumpet, Pat Martino on guitar, and Carl Wilson on organ. The team of Martino and Wilson is especially great – choppy, groovy, and very soulful – with a sound that's similar to the organ work on classic albums by Jack McDuff from the same time. Titles include "Thunderbird", "All Soul", "Ebb Tide", "Up A Lazy River", "The Man I Love", and "One Mint Julep". CD

✨✧ Willis JacksonTell It ... LP
Prestige, 1967. Very Good ... $14.99
A killer from the 60s years of tenorist Willis Jackson – a time when the older R&B player was really rising to the top – thanks to the sort of smoking soul jazz setting that a record like this could provide! The whole thing's great – very much in the Groove Holmes or Jack McDuff vibe of the time – familiar tunes taken in all sorts of new, groovy directions – with help from the young Pat Azzarra on guitar and Carl Wilson on Hammond – plus trumpet from the lesser-known Joseph Hadrick! Titles include "One Mint Julep", "Tangerine", "Ebb Tide", "Blue Gator", and "Secret Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue trident label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a cutout hole, small corner cut, some wear and aging, small tear in the opening, splitting in the bottom seam, and small stains in back.)

✨✧ Willis JacksonWay We Were ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The soulful sax of Willis Jackson meets the Philly Soul mecca of Sigma Sound – and the result is a surprisingly wonderful album! Willis blows in the lead on all tracks, supported by legendary Sigma players – and the sound is a lush and sweetly soulful one, almost an instrumental version of the Philly work that had been coming out from some of the mellower soul groups on Atlantic at the time. Phil Hurtt co-produced the album with Tony Bell – and Phil also sings on the set, mostly working in background chorus modes, but occasionally speaking in a warm, romantic mode that's really nice. Titles include a nice remake of "Pick Up The Pieces", plus "Lady Marmalade", "Fire", "Love's Theme", "Brown Eyed Girl", and "Sideshow". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willis JacksonWillis Jackson Plays With Feeling ... LP
Cotillion, 1976. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
The title's righter than you might think – as Willis DOES play with feeling, despite a cheesy-looking cover that might make you think otherwise! The groove here is tight and smooth 70s jazz funk – very much in the mode of some of the more fully-arranged Kudu and CTI albums of the time, with Willis out in the lead, blowing wonderfully over the top in a Stanley Turrentine sort of mode. Arrangements are by Ricky West and Bert Keyes, and the album's got a really great version of the Afro Funk classic "Racubah", plus the upbeat tunes "Singing Bass" and "Do Your Super Thing", and the slower, harder, guitar-based "Do It To It". ✨✧ Willis JacksonYa Understand Me ... LP
Muse, 1984. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Back to basics work from Willis Jackson – a live date recorded in France at the start of the 80s, but one that's done with a soul jazz vibe that recalls his 60s concert sets for Prestige! The group here is a quartet, with Richard Groove Holmes on Hammond – and the tracks are long and open, with plenty of room for jamming, and the sort of tenor/organ interplay that Jackson used to hit with Jack McDuff. The album features two long groovers – "Ya Understand Me" and "More" – and hits a mellower tone on the cuts "Body & Soul", "My One & Only Love", and "The Head Tune". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1965. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic set of soul jazz tracks from Gator Tail and Brother Jack McDuff – recorded in a raw grooving style, very similar to that used on some of their live recordings from the same time. The core of the group features Bill Jennings on guitar and Wendell Marshall on bass, but some of the rhythm players change up over the course of the tracks, and Buck Clarke adds some nice conga on side 2! Includes the nice 10 minute groover "This'll Get To Ya", plus "Glad A See Ya", "Three Little Words", and "To' Gether". LP, Vinyl record album

Tampa, 1956. Very Good ... $9.99
A killer set from drummer George Jenkins – with a hard-wailing Central Ave groove, augmented by some killer tenor work by Plas Johnson! This is one of the best albums ever to hear Johnson blowing in a jazz mode – and his tenor skills put him right up there with Willis Jackson or Gene Ammons for sheer soulful blowing. Most rhythms are in an R&B-ish tone, with piano by Ray Johnson, Duke Harris on bass, and Jenkins on drums – and titles include "Gee Gee", "Caravan", "Drum Boogie", "Hot Spot", and "Last Call". The set's a smoking selection of older soul jazz numbers from the glory days of Prestige Records – that key late 50s/1960s time when the label was helping forge a whole new sound in jazz – mixing in elements of R&B, hardbop, and gospel – and letting fly with a whole range of great tenor and organ players! The tracks here are all classics, all presented in nice long full versions that show what music like this can really do when let loose in the studio – and titles include "Seed Shack" by Gene Ammons, "Nother Futher" by Sonny Stitt & Jack McDuff, "Misty" by Groove Holmes, "Soul Meeting" by King Curtis, "The Honeydripper" by Jack McDuff, "When My Dreamboat Comes Home" by Arnett Cobb, "In The Kitchen" by Eddie Lockjaw Davis, "More Today Than Yesterday" by Charles Earland, "Please Mr Jackson" by Willis Jackson, and "Dirty Apple" by Johnny Hammond Smith. ✨✧ VariousReturn Of Jazz Club – Dancefloor Classics From The Original Jazz Dance DJ ... CD
Prestige/BGP (UK), Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really classic jazz grooves from the vaults of Prestige Records – the kind of cuts that first broke big on the London scene of the 80s, at a time when diggers were setting fire to the rare groove scene too! The cuts here are proof that some of the best work doesn't need to come from completely obscure groups or super-tiny labels – as the music here is exactly the kind of work that made huge waves in the US jazz scene when first released, then went underground for many years – until later collectors and diggers brought it back to the limelight! The great thing is how many of these cuts are all acoustic – no need for electricity to make things funky – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Hiyo Silver" by Bennie Green, "Grease Monkey" by Kenny Burrell with Jack McDuff, "Mau Mau" by Art Farmer, "Mambo Inn" by Billy Taylor with Candido, "Manteca" by Red Garland, "Blue Stompin" by Hal Singer, "Spider Man" by Freddie McCoy, "Filthy McNasty" by Eddie Jefferson, "Flatjacks" by Willie Rodriguez, "Blue Gator" by Willis Jackson, and "Pedro Stroller" by Johnny Lytle. (Funky Compilations, Jazz) CD
