Paul Brusger with Eric AlexanderSoul Contract ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2023. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A killer record from bassist Paul Brusger – a set that features plenty of great work from Eric Alexander on tenor and alto – the latter an instrument that he's really begun to embrace in recent years! The rest of the group is wonderful too – Steve Davis on trombone, Rick Germanson on piano, and Willie Jones III on drums – a combo with a hard-swinging energy, and lots of individual identity in the way each member expresses themselves within the group – no egos getting in the way of the groove, even though the musicians themselves are an all-star group! Yet credit should really be given to Brusger for not only pulling the whole thing together, but also composing most of the material for the set – really great tunes that bristle with fresh life and vision, on selections that include "A Slice Of Gryce", "Just A Tadd More Please", "Do Dreams Really Matter", "The Sugar Glider", and "Blues For Another Time". ✨✧ Ralph MooreThree Score ... CD
WJ3, 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A long-overdue return as a leader for tenor genius Ralph Moore – an artist who first blew us away when he appeared on the scene in the 80s, but who hasn't gotten this sort of time in the spotlight in many many years! The passage of time hasn't dimmed Ralph's genius at all – as the record bursts forward with the kind of joyous colors and tones that always made us such big fans – and which, in a way, made Moore's appearance on the scene almost a tenor equivalent to the work of Bobby Watson on alto – a whole new voice for a new generation – straight ahead, but filled with positive energy and a very strong spirit – such that he always seems to play with a warmth and soul that really sets him apart. The group here is superb – a quartet with Eric Reed on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – the last of whom deserves a huge "thanks" for producing the record and getting Ralph back out in the lead. Titles include the Moore originals "Donny", "Three Score", "Blues Alliance", and "623 C Street" – and Reed tunes "Carol", "Another Time", and "Una Mujer Muy Elegante". CD

✨✧ Houston PersonMoment To Moment ... CD
High Note, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Houston Person grooving strong – still burning with a nice sort of fire, as one of the few soul jazz giants from his generation still left in the 21st Century! The set's got the lean, clean, later sound of some of Person's self-produced sets for Muse from years back – and like those gems, this one was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder with a really great sound – Houston at the helm of the production, and the group on tenor – with other players who include Terell Stafford on trumpet, Randy Johnston on guitar, John DiMartino on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums. Titles include "Bleeker Street", "Moment To Moment", "Freight Dance", "E Nada Mais", "Nina Never Knew", "Back In New Orleans", and "All My Life". CD

✨✧ Gregory TardySufficient Grace ... CD
WJ3, 2022. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's way more than sufficient grace going on here – and a strongly soulful swing that really has the whole album coming together, right on the money! Maybe that's no surprise, though, given that the set's issued on the excellent WJ3 label from Willie Jones III, who plays drums at the core of the record, next to the bass of Sean Conly – while Tardy carves out all these wonderfully fluid, feeling lines next to the trumpet of Marcus Printup – who himself sounds better than usual, and makes for a perfect fit for Tardy. Keith Brown handles piano on the quintet session, all tunes are Tardy originals, and titles include "Tree & Its Fruit", "I Choose You", "For Deacon Rock", "The Omnipresent Cardiologist", "Janel's Love Song", and "Nick Hoot". ✨✧ Steve TurreSpiritman ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great straight set from this top-shelf trombonist – done at the same relaxed, stretched-out level of some of the other excellent albums on the Smoke Sessions label – no tricks, no gimmicks, just a great demonstration of Steve Turre's strengths as a leader, and his always-sharp ability to solo! The group features Bruce Williams on soprano and alto sax, and Xavier Davis on piano – and rhythm is from Gerald Cannon on bass and the great Willie Jones III on drums – the latter of whom keeps things moving with just the right crackle on the groovers, but lets Cannon gently shape the mellower cuts with his bass. Turre's horn sounds wonderfully mellifluous – and Williams often steps back a bit to let the leader shine first, before swooping in for his own strong solos. Titles include "Trayvon's Blues", "Nangadef", "Spiritman/All Blues", "Bu", "Peace", and "Funky Thing". CD

✨✧ Elio Villafranca & The Jass SyncopatorsCaribbean Tinge – Live From Dizzy's Club Coca Cola ... CD
Motema, 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavy Latin grooves from pianist Elio Villafranca – working here with a great large lineup that's filled to the brim with heavyweight players! The session's the kind that you'll find at the best Club Coca Cola presentations – one of those rare moments where big money allows a special sort of performance, but the kind that never dampens its edge for the mainstream – and instead chooses that moment to unleash something really special! Villafranca composed and arranged all the tunes – and even produced the setting – and he makes great use of players who include Sean Jones and Terrell Stafford on trumpet, Vincent Herring on alto, Greg Tardy on tenor, and both Willie Jones III and Lewis Nash on drums. The set's also got a fair bit of added percussion – which really intensifies the sound promised in the title – and tracks include "Caribbean Tinge", "Flower By The Dry River", "Mambo Vivo", "Two To Tango", and "Last Train To Paris". ✨✧ Steve Davis with Larry WillisLive At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite records ever from trombonist Steve Davis – a live date recorded at Smalls, and one that lets him stretch out a lot more than most of his studio albums! The setting is wonderful – an open-ended, easygoing quintet with great piano from Larry Willis – and a groove that is a nice change from some of the tighter modes that Davis often hits with his One For All compadres. As a result, Steve really takes some nice chances on the solos – and shows a range of his horn that impresses us even more than usual – and heck, we already think he's a great player! Altoist Mike DiRubbo brings a nice edge to the proceedings with some great solo work of his own – and the rest of the group features Gerald Cannon on bass and Willie Jones III on drums. Titles include "Spirit Waltz", "Nature Boy/To Wisdom The Prize", and "Daydream/Outro". CD

✨✧ Dezron DouglasLive At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bassist Dezron Douglas can be one hell of a leader – especially when he's working with a group and setting as great as this! The album's got that solid punch we love in the Smalls Live series – a way of allowing players to really open up and be themselves, yet also find a cohesiveness as a group that you don't often get in studio sessions – that brilliant magic that can make live jazz performance so wonderful, when it's captured this well – a great document of a musical moment and local expression that might have been missed otherwise. Dezron's bass is very upfront in the performance – and the quintet also features tight trumpet from Josh Evans, bold tenor from Stacy Dillard, sharp piano from David Bryant, and smoking drums from Willie Jones III. Titles include "Nita", "Let's Ride", "The Puppet", "Bish Bash Bop", and "Power Of One". CD
