✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Jazz & Soul – From The Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
WEA (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... $9.99
Tripped out jazz and funk! This great little set features some gems from the late 60s/early 70s years at Atlantic, Warner, and Elektra – and has a focus on tunes that draw more than a bit of influence from the fuzzed-out, long-haired late 60s scene. You're bound to recognize a few of the names on the set – but what you'll really appreciate is the way the tunes come together, grooving hard with a mixture of heavy jazz and trippy elements – staying soulful in most parts, and even hitting a bit of funk at just the right moments! Titles include "Back Home" by Yusef Lateef, "Threnody For Sharon Tate" by Freddie Hubbard, "Smoke Signals" by Eddie Harris, "Sorcery" by Charles Lloyd, "Mirror" by Charlie Mariano, "Raymond Winchester" by Yusef Lateef, "Freaks For The Festival" by Roland Kirk, "Vibrafinger" by Gary Burton, and "Spontaneous Simplicity" by Sun Ra. ✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Jazz & Soul 2 – More Psychedelic Jazz & Soul From The Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
WEA (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Tripped out grooves from one of our favorite musical eras – that end of the 60s time when people were letting their hair down, opening up their styles, and really creating some crazy work! As the title would imply, the collection's filled with mind-expanding jazz and soul tunes – often electric, and with subtle funky touches that go way past the obvious in search of groove-driven Nirvana! The assortment of artists is great – with killer cuts from bigger names, and some surprising gems from others that we wouldn't have thought of – all packaged with a great cover and tasty notes on the tunes. Titles include "Land Of 1000 Dances" by Nino & April, "Mortgage On My Soul" by Keith Jarrett, "Live Right Now" and "Lonely Is Today" by Eddie Harris, "Hang Em Up" by Freddie Hubbard, "It Ain't What You Do" by J Geils Band, "Chica Boom" by Jimmy & Vella, "Hideaway" by Freddie King, and "The Brain Of Oskar Panizza" by Michael Bundt. ✨✧ VariousStoned Soul Picnic – Illicit Grooves From the Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
WEA (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Here's a picnic we'd love to partake of – a wonderfully trippy set of jazz grooves from the heyday of the Atlantic and Warner funk years! The set pulls together a wealth of obscure numbers from older albums and singles – going for tunes that have a slightly psychedelic approach to the music, building on groovy soul jazz by adding in some of the weirder, wilder instrumentation that started to creep up in the late 60s. The result is really great stuff – tunes that start to groove towards 70s funk, but which also have an expansive consciousness of their own – taking earlier riffs by Cannonball and Herbie, and blowing them up a lot more with some really freewheeling performances! Titles include "The Ringer" and "Stoned Soul Picnic" by Roy Ayers, "Las Vegas Tango" by Gary Burton, "Stuff" by Chris Towns & The Townsmen, "Pharoah's Gold" by David Newman, "Universal Mother" by Don Cherry, "Stoned Soul" by Artie Christopher, "That Mellow Feeling" by Junior Mance, "Doin What I Wanna" by Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers, "Cantaloupe Island" by Nat Adderley, "Us" by Les McCann, and "Shop Talk" by Cold Blood. George BensonBreezin ... CD
Warner, 1976. Used ... $2.99
A super huge hit for George – the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar! The album features George playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, ones that mix together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation". Miles DavisDoo Bop ... CD
Warner, 1992. Used ... $2.99
Miles must have turned over in his grave with this one – although it went on to influence a decade of jazz remix projects! Miles spacey trumpet is remixed from tapes recorded before his death, and production is handled by Easy Mo Bee, with kind of a "hip hop meets jazz" sort of flair. Titles include "Chocolate Chip", "High Speed Chase", "Fantasy", "Duke Booty", "Mystery", and "The Doo Bop Song". CD

Miles DavisLive Around The World ... CD
Warner, Late 80s. Used ... $3.99
Late live work from Miles Davis – a collection of material recorded in various concert settings during the last few years of the 80s – pulled together as a double-length tribute the trumpeter after he passed away! The quality of the performances here is great – very similar to some of Miles' early 80s work for Columbia, especially his great 2LP live set for them – and the players on the tracks vary a bit, given the setting – and include Adam Holzman, Joey DeFrancesco, and Robert Irving III on keyboards – plus Kenny Garrett on alto and flute, Benny Rietveld and Foley on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, and Marilyn Mazur on percussion. Titles include "Hannibal", "New Blues", "Intruder", "Time After Time", "Human Nature", "Full Nelson", "Wrinkle", and "Amandla". CD

Paul Desmond & Jim HallFirst Place Again (with bonus track) ... CD
Warner/Gambit (Spain), 1959. Used ... $16.99
The first big Paul Desmond solo album of the 60s – and a standout set that's very much in the tradition of his best work on RCA! This rare side was cut for Warner Brothers during a time when they were taking a brief dip into jazz – and it's a rarely-heard set that features Jim Hall on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Percy Heath on bass, all backing up Paul with a spare "after hours" sound that's a marked change from his tightly woven work with Brubeck. Desmond's alto is full of possibilities here – working wonders with familiar tunes like "Greensleeves", "You Go To My Head", "Time After Time", and "East Of The Sun" – as well as with the John Lewis modern number "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West". CD also features the bonus track "Susie". CD

MatrixWizard ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1978. Used ... $4.99
There's a wizard on the cover, but the set's way more fusion than fantasy – tightly jamming work from Matrix, a combo who shone brightly at the end of the 70s! There's more horns here than you'd find in the usual fusion group – as the group's a nonet, with Larry Darling and Jeff Pietrangelo on trumpets, Kurt Dietrich on trombone, Mike Hale on flugelhorn and trumpet, John Kirchberger on sax and flute, and Brad McDougall on trombone. John Harmon plays keyboards – both acoustic and electric – and some of the other group members handle keys as well. Titles include "Spring", "Mountolive", "Brown Boy", "Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder", and "Wizard". CD

David SanbornSanborn ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1976. Used ... $8.99
A damn great early moment from David Sanborn – a record that really shows the reedman at his best – working some tight solos over soulful backings in the same 70s manner as Tom Scott or Wilton Felder! Like both of those players, David's got the chops to step out in front of the backings strongly – blowing some of his best notes with surprisingly little flourish, and crafting a soulful lead that's supported by work from Hiram Bullock on guitar, Rosalinda De Leon on keyboards, and Victor Lewis on drums. There's a bit of vocals on the album – courtesy of Patti Austin, Lain Groves, Phoebe Snow, and Paul Simon – and titles include "Indio", "Smile", "Concrete Boogie", "Mamacita", and "7th Ave". CD

✨✧ VariousJazz In Sweden 1949 to 1961 – The Legendary Years (9CD set) ... CD
Warner/MMG, Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. Used 9CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible box set – one that's overflowing with jazz from the postwar scene in Sweden – played both by local up-and-coming talents, and by Americans working overseas! The package features a wealth of rare recordings from the Metronome label and while some of this work has been reissued over the years, but there also seems to be a number of tracks here we've never seen on CD before – no surprise, given that there's about 150 songs in the package! Includes work by Hacke Bjorksten, Lars Gullin, Arne Domnerus, Charles Norman, Gosta Theselius, Ernestine Anderson, Roy Haynes, Sahib Shihab, Quincy Jones, Rolf Ericson, Freddie Redd, Ben Bailey, George Wallington, Red Mitchell, Jimmy Raney, James Moody, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Teddy Wilson, and lots of others. CD
(Includes slipcase and a large booklet with photos and notes in Japanese. Individual discs have notes in Swedish and English. Out of print and in great shape!)

✨✧ George BensonErotic Moods (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Paul Winley, Early 70s/1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wild and mysterious stuff! This album is sort of a repackaged version of the legendary Harlem Underground album – a great lost funk album from the mid-70s that listed George Benson as a player in the group, but one that Benson claims that he never played on! The time of this release coincided with Benson's big hit years in the 70s – so the package is a bit of a cash-in project – but the grooves here are a lot harder-hitting than anything George recorded for Warner or Columbia – really gritty funk that's totally great throughout! Other players include Dave Baby Cortez on organ, Reuben Wilson on keyboards, and Willis Jackson on tenor – and Ann Winley sings on one track, the great "Fed Up", which has a really bad-rapping feel! Other titles include the classic break track "Smokin' Cheeba Cheeba" – plus a few smokin' organ/guitar wailers, like "Loose Joints" and "Overture Erotic", both of which are nice enough to warrant this separate release! Other tracks include "Erotic Moods" and "Sweet Taste Of Love". CD
