✨✧ Tom SkinnerVoices Of Bishara ... LP
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first album as a leader from drummer Tom Skinner, but a set that instantly marks him as a player to watch – as the set's got a great vibe all the way through, and a combination of elements that's even greater than the sum of its parts! And the parts are pretty mighty, too – as the quintet features Nubya Garcia on tenor and flute, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor and bass clarinet – both players who need no introduction, but who are in this raw, spiritual jazz setting that really lets their power come through. Yet maybe even more amazing is the work on cello by Kareem Dayes, which is great next to the bass of Tom Herbert – both elements resonating together to give a subtle sort of majesty to the record! The set is played whole and live – not chopped/mixed/produced as much as other International Anthem albums, or some of the work from the London scene – yet it also doesn't just ape an older spiritual jazz mode either – a real testament to Skinners' vision as a leader. Titles include "Red 2", "Bishara", "Voices Of The Past", "Quiet As It's Kept", "Day After Tomorrow", and "The Journey". LP, Vinyl record album

Sons Of KemetBurn ... LP
Naim/Native Rebel (UK), 2013. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $29.99 46.99
The very first album from Sons Of Kemet – and a set that already has the group burning hard, at the level that have made them one of the key forces on the brilliant British jazz scene over the past decade or so! The mighty Shabaka Hutchings is fantastic on both tenor and clarinet – and the group has a unique two-drum lineup, with work from Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford, who provide these great criss-crossing rhythms – while the tuba of Oren Marshall moves between both work as a bass-like instrument, and as a painter of deeper tones on the set! The blend of elements is wonderful – and titles include "Song For Galeano", "Beware", "Inner Babylon", "All Will Surely Burn", "The Godfather", "Rivers Of Babylon", and "The Junglist". ✨✧ London Brew (Benji B, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, & Others)London Brew ... CD
Concord, 2023. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
Heady work from this supergroup on the London jazz scene – a moody electric ensemble that was initially put together to explore the music of Miles Davis, but who have a soaring sound that's very much all their own! If you know the work of some of the players in the lineup, you'll instantly recognize that you're in very genre-breaking territory – a world past conventional jazz, served up with contributions from Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings on saxes and flute, Theon Cross on tuba, Nikolaj Torp Larsen on electronics and melodica, Raven Bush on violin and electronics, Dave Okumu on guitar, Benji B on turntables and "sonic recycling", and Tom Skinner and Dan See on drums and percussion. The set was put together by Martin Terefe, who also plays guitar in the group – and the whole thing really takes off from early 70s Miles electric territory, on titles that include "Raven Flies Low", "Morning Prayers", "Bassics", "Miles Chases New Voodoo In The Church", and "London Brew". ✨✧ Sons Of KemetAfrican Cosmology – Myth Science/Rites Of Passage (2021 Black Friday Release) ... 12-inch
Verve, 2021. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Two unissued tracks from this mighty group from the London scene – material recorded during the sessions for their Black To The Future record, appearing here for the first time! The saxophone work of Shabaka Hutchings is at the head of the group – really soaring on the 11 minute cut "Rites Of Passage", which features guest tenor from Steve Williamson too! The rest of the group are in equally sharp formation – with Theon Cross on tuba, using the instrument more like a bass than you might expect – plus Tom Skinner and Eddie Hick on double drums, which makes for a very rhythmic groove on "Myth Science". 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ WildflowerLove (aka Season 2) ... LP
Ill Considered (UK), 2020. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing group, sounding even better here on their second album than they did the first time around – which is quite an achievement, as we really loved that record from this mighty trio! The group's an offshoot from the Ill Considered combo – and they've got an approach that's similar to that group, but maybe even more modal and spiritual overall – tremendous bass from Leon Brichard, tight drums from Tom Skinner, and searing reed solos from Idris Rahman – who blows tenor, flute, and clarinet over the long grooves laid down by the bass and drums! Rhythm is at the core of every track, and there's energy that flows right from the original inspiration of Coltrane's early 60s groove – but Rahman's solos are very distinct, and add a hell of a lot to the already great sound of the group. Titles include "Light In The Sorrow", "Distant Thunder", "Fire", "Mirage", "Under The Night Sky", and "Where The Wild Things Dance". LP, Vinyl record album
