Columbia/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the coolest albums we've ever seen from this hip Japanese big band – a record that mixes hot rod sound effects with some funky jazzy groovers! The approach is plenty darn weird, but also pretty darn groovy – as most songs start out with a revving auto engine or other car-styled sounds – then roll into the band vamping its way through some hip covers of American rock and soul numbers from the late 60s and early 70s! The rhythms are a lot funkier than other Tokyo Cuban Boys records – partly because of the cool choice of songs – and the instrumentation includes organ, electric piano, and wah wah guitar – in addition to the group's usual horn-heavy approach. Titles include "The Story In Your Eyes", "Funky Nassau", "Black Magic Woman", "Chuckie Wagon", "Every Day", "I'm A Man", "Mandrill", "Questions 67 and 68", and "Everybody's Everything". CD
