✨✧ Malaku DakuLove Drums From The Ghetto (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album that's every bit as great as you'd guess from the cover and the title – a hip set recorded on the Philly scene of the 70s, and this wonderful blend of jazz, soul, and plenty of percussion! Malaku Thompson plays the drums, but there's also plenty of other percussion on the record – mixed with guitar, bass, and voices – all at a level that's sometimes raw and rootsy, sometimes more warmly soulful – with a righteous energy that holds up all the way through! We'd rank this one in a rare breed of unusual projects – maybe like the Har-You Percussion record, or work by The Pharoahs or Artistic Heritage Ensemble from Chicago – and the music takes cultural currents from Africa and the Caribbean, and weaves them into hipper modes from the Philly 70s scene. Titles include "Bump Bang U Bang", "Pygmy Happening", "Gettin Down In The Hut", "My Land My Woman", "Shango", "Village Life In The Ghetto", and "Ife Bobowa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John HicksIs That So (180 gram pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Timeless/Tidal Waves, 1990. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title alone is more than enough to win us over here – as it's a great Duke Pearson composition that turns out to be a wonderful showcase for the most lyrical modes of pianist John Hicks! That tune's the leadoff, and it really sets the tone for the record – a gently soulful set that has Hicks working in a wonderful trio with Ray Drummond on bass and Idris Muhammad on drums – both players with a warmly melodic feel, especially Drummond – who seems to create this resonance with John's piano. Titles include "Is That So", "Emily", "Yesterdays", "I'll Remember April", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "April Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AricaHeaven (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Just Sunshine/Tidal Waves, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An early musical moment from the Arica Institute – a spiritual collective whose many members supposedly recorded this album over the course of a night spent at the Electric Lady studio – with such a shifting lineup of sounds and participants, the album doesn't list any particular musicians at all! The work is on the farther side of cosmic jazz – almost hearkening towards more meditative modes at times – such as the later recordings of Laraaji – but with elements that are also borrowed from Indian music and other global sources, often presented and produced in a way that the sonic elements bubble into a heady aural space that's difficult to navigate without letting yourself go entirely. Titles include "Lake", "Wind", "Ocean", "Thorn", "River", "Candle", and "Utoh". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Frank Derrick Total ExperienceYou Betcha! – Live At Fiddlers ... LP
PS Records/Tidal Waves, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A pretty hip batch of soul jazz tracks – recorded by drummer Frank Derrick live at Fiddler's nightclub in Chicago. Derrick's group plays a bit of everything – from Eddie Harris funky jazz to driving big band numbers to organ-heavy soul jazz numbers – all with a nicely heavy bottom that really gives the tracks an edge! The recording quality is nicely rumbly at times – almost giving the record the feel of some of those great local school band records from the same period – but the album's even better than those, because the tunes here are all original numbers – with a great overall conception that's a lot fresher than the usual album of this sort! Titles include "No Jive", "Jazz Scene", "Variations In Jazz", "Inspiration", and "Socialite Suburbanite". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Byron Pope Speed Of LightMusic For Earthdwellers & Starseekers (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A set recorded in Paris during the early 80s – but headed up by an American saxophonist, and done with a vibe that's like the best spiritual jazz modes of the 70s! Byron Pope has a compelling legacy that includes work with Burton Greene and Alan Silva – but he's definitely his own man here, working at the head of a group that's rich in organic rhythms, and which has a really great sense of flow – always moving forward with new ideas, bringing complex ideas into play with a down to earth sensibility in their sound! Pope's sound is great – nice and crisp – and other players include Georges-Edouard Nouel on piano, Roger Raspail on percussion, and Chris Henderson on drums – on titles that include "Shades Of", "No Boundaries", "Third Eyes", "This Way", and "Face Reality".
