✨✧ Oran EtkinGathering Light ... CD
Motema, 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
Oran Etkin's got a wonderfully angular style to his reeds here – a mix of clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor – all informed by an approach that's as bold as it is soulful! The style is steeped in tradition at one level, but mighty fresh at another – that mix that you'd find in the work of Don Byron, but warmer and more organic here – at a level that makes the whole thing feel much more personal. Other players include Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Ben Allison on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums – and titles include "Takeda", "Scattering Light", "Gambang Suling", "Taxi Dance", "Gratitude", and "Distant Sounds Of Change". ✨✧ Five Corners QuintetChasin' The Jazz Gone By (US pressing – with bonus track) ... CD
Ricky Tick/Milan, 2005. Used ... $5.99
An instant classic from Five Corners Quintet – acoustic jazz played with a dancefloor groove, and the perfect summation of a brilliant run of initial singles! The FCQ return jazz to its grooviest roots – played live, without processing or electronics, and able to hit a snapping groove that takes us back to the days when Blue Note and Prestige got plenty of play on the radio and jukebox! Most tracks roll along in a modal or waltzing mode that shares a lot with the best Nicola Conte projects of recent years – but the group have also got a real feel for their own tonal colors, effortlessly shading in each space and corner of the tunes with a sublime blend of ringing vibes, dancing piano, and beautifully-toned horn passages. Mark Murphy guests on vocals on the tracks "This Could Be The Start Of Something", "Before We Say Goodbye", and "Jamming" – and Okou sings on "Blue Cycles" and "Case Study" – leaving the remaining instrumentals "Trading Eights", "Interlope", "Straight Up", "Three Corners", "Lighthouse", and "Unsquare Bossa". US CD features the bonus tracks "Taxi Driver". (New Grooves, Jazz) CD

Bob JamesAll Around The Town ... CD
Tappan Zee/Koch, 1979. Used 2CD ... $9.99
A live set by Bob – packaged in a cover that has a picture of him in a Taxi, certainly designed to cash in on his fame doing the theme for that TV show! The record's actually quite nice, and is a good blend of the mellow Bob from later years and the darker Bob from earlier ones – performed with a set of players that include Steve Gadd, Idris Muhammad, Tom Scott, Richard Tee, Earl Klugh, Tom Browne, Joanne Brackeen, and Eddie Gomez. Includes nice versions of "Westchester Lady" and "The Golden Apple", plus "Kari", "Touchdown", "Farandole", and "Stompin At The Savoy". CD
(Out of print. Barcode has a cutout hole.)

Bob JamesLucky Seven ... CD
Tappan Zee/Columbia, 1979. Used ... $5.99
Bob James is picking up some extra keyboards here – mixing his usual Fender Rhodes with a bit of Oberheim Polyphonic – but the overall sound of the record is still pretty great, and filled with those warm, spacious tones that make Bob's albums so great! Things are slightly smooth, but never cloying – and there's a number of tracks here that show a strong "Taxi" influence in the way Bob puts together the rhythms and brings the keyboards up in the mix – a style that's slightly gentler than the CTI years, but which also shows a deepening spirit in his work. Titles include "Look Alike", "Rush Hour", "Blue Lick", "Big Stone City", "Friends", and "Fly Away". CD
(Out of print, small punch through barcode.)

Howard RumseyMusic For Lighthousekeeping – Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1956. Used ... $9.99
An obscure later entry in the Lighthouse All Stars series on Contemporary – but a great one too – and a set that's less less overflowing with big name players, than a well-conceived small group session! Rumsey's leading the sextet on bass, but other players are even more noteworthy – and include Bob Cooper on tenor sax, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Conte Candoli on trumpet, and Stan Levey on drums – as well as Sonny Clark on piano, making a rare west coast appearance here! The interplay between group members is slightly unusual for the scene at the time – still tightly-crafted, but often with phrasings that don't immediately scream "LA 50s". Titles include "Octavia", "Taxi War Dance", "Love Me Or Levey", "Jubilation", "I Deal", and "Latin For Lovers". CD
