Ambrose AkinmusireOn The Tender Spot Of Every Calloused Moment ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
A fantastic album from trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire – a set that really kicks his career up to the next level, and which is easily the most powerful record he's ever given us! The music finds Ambrose in many moods, all of them righteous – sometimes blowing hard and fierce in a small combo, sometimes issuing out more personal statements in a more stripped-down setting – working with players that include Harish Raghavan on bass, Justin Brown on drums, and Sam Harris on piano – plus vocalist Genevieve Artadi on one especially beautiful number that features Akinmusire on Fender Rhodes! We've loved the music of Ambrose for many years – and this is one of those faith-rewarding sets that always makes it so wonderful to follow the career of any key jazz musician – as we hope you'll also find on titles that include "Roy", "4623", "Moon", "Tide Of Hyacinth", "Cynical Sideliners", and "Mr Roscoe". Ambrose AkinmusireWhen The Heart Emerges Glistening ... CD
Blue Note, 2011. Used ... $8.99
A lovely title, and a lovely little record too – every bit as poetic as its promise – with haunting trumpet lines by Ambrose Akimusire, nestled nicely in an acoustic quintet that also features Gerald Clayton on piano and Walter Smith III on tenor! There's an understated quality to the record that's really nice – none of the too-modern modes you might guess from the cover image (we'll admit that sometimes we're suspicious of contemporary Blue Note mixing it up too much) – and instead a style that's mighty fresh, yet still pretty earthy – modern, yet never too outside – and a sense of soul that informs proceedings and really helps keep things on track. Titles include "Jaya", "Henya", "Far But Few Between", "Confessions To My Unborn Daughter", "The Walls Of Lechuguilla", and "My Name Is Oscar". CD

✨✧ Marc Johnson's Bass DesiresSecond Sight ... CD
ECM, 1987. Used Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Dark work from the quartet Bass Desires – a combo that draws heavily on the rumbling sounds of bassist Marc Johnson, then fills in the spaces with twin guitars from Bill Frisell and John Scofield, and also features a bit of drums from Peter Erskine! Some of the sounds here echo more abstract experiments in the left side of the jazz spectrum during the 80s – but they're taken into a bit stronger, straighter focus here – and recorded with enough ECM touches to make Johnson's music cross over in surprising ways. A few tracks are surprisingly tuneful, and titles include "Small Hands", "Thrill Seekers", "1951", "Prayer Beads", and "Sweet Soul". CD

Tom ScottDesire ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
An early 80s set from Tom Scott, and proof that he could still make an electric jazz album sound more soulful than most of his mainstream contemporaries! There's a really great sense of balance here – production that's certainly polished, but instrumentation that's never sleepy at all – those always-sharp reeds we love from Tom, especially on alto and soprano sax – plus some great keyboard work from Victor Feldman, who has a similar sense of space and timing ot match Scott's groove! The set's got a feel that's a bit like some of the few really great albums from Dave Grusin – and some cuts have vocals, although mostly of the backup type. Titles include "Desire", "Sure Enough", "The Only One", "Stride", "Chunk O Funk", and "Meet Somebody". CD

✨✧ Marc JohnsonBass Desires ... CD
ECM, 1986. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the leading lights of the ECM Records scene in the early 80s – bassist Marc Johnson, working here with his successful Bass Desires group! The lineup features some wonderful interplay on stringed instruments – Johnson's bass, and guitars from both John Scofield and Bill Frisell, the later of whom also plays a bit of guitar synthesizer, in very ECM-shaped lines. Drums are from Peter Erskine, who's well-heard when the moment allows – and titles include "Samurai Hee Haw", "Mojo Highway", "Thanks Again", "Bass Desires", and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair". ✨✧ Ran Blake & Andrew RathburnNorthern Noir ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
This isn't the first album from pianist Ran Blake to feature the word "noir" in the title – but it's definitely a distinct set that's got a spirit that's all its own – a really beautiful meeting between the legendary modernist and tenor saxophonist Andrew Rathburn! At some level, the session reminds us of classic dates in this format – like meetings between Archie Shepp and Dollar Brand, or Gil Evans and Steve Lacy – but there's a slightly different spirit here, as the songs are relatively short – less long explorations of improvisational space, than they are these crisp statements by the artists paired together – each very individual in sound, but with a unified vision as they make their way through a rich array of themes from many sources. Titles include "Dr Mabuse The Gambler", "The Wild One", "Midnight Sun", "Strange Fruit", "Streetcar Named Desire", "Vertigo", "For Wayne", "Judy", and "Of The Little North Wind". CD

Ghallab, 1980. Very Good+ ... $34.99
The kind of sweet jazzy mellow stuff that's always been big with the stepper's scene here in Chicago. Ghallab's a keyboardist and vocalist, and the stuff on here could be slotted into a tradition that includes Roy Ayers and Gene Harris, especially their mid-70s fusiony work. Titles include "Love Desire", "Make My Move", "Morning Sunrise", and "You Give Me A Lil Lovin". (Soul, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Human Arts EnsembleUnder The Sun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $24.99
Chicago had the Art Ensemble of Chicago at the end of the 60s – and St Louis had the fantastic Human Arts Ensemble at the start of the 70s – a wonderfully creative jazz group who shared a lot of the same ideas of improvisation and artistic freedom as the AACM up in the Windy City! This album's maybe that group's lasting legacy – a fantastic record that's sometimes as funky as it is spiritual, as outside as it is tied to older jazz traditions – performed by a core lineup that includes Oliver Lake on alto and tenor, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Marty Erlich on alto and flute, James Marshall and JD Parran on additional reeds, Charles Bobo Shaw on drums, and Carol Marshall on vocals and small instruments! The group have a very special vibe – one that comes through especially strong on the side-long "Lover's Desire" – a nice slightly-funky number that has a groove that's sort of modal. Side two of the album features "Hazrat The Sufi", a long creative avant piece, with insane ensemble playing that's very much in the AACM mode – but with some touches that also point the way towards the later loft jazz scene in New York – especially the world in which Lake would become such a key participant. CD
(A fantastic package – done with the pasted-on image of the original numbered LP pressing – right down to a pasted-on envelope on the back!)

✨✧ Wynton MarsalisMajesty Of The Blues ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1989. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A bit more of a high concept album than some of Wynton Marsalis' previous efforts – a set with a few more added horns on side one, and an extended suite on side two! The work definitely shows Wynton's increasing concern with jazz history – his desire to embrace, and sometimes represent, decades of past musical expression in his work – a real Lincoln Center sort of impulse, but one that still comes off relatively well here, and without as much hoke as you'd expect. Side one has Wynton working with regular pianist Marcus Roberts, plus Todd Williams on tenor and soprano sax and Wes Anderson on alto – and side two features a completely different group, much more in an older-styled jazz vein – with Michael White on clarinet, Danny Barker on banjo, Teddy Riley on trumpet, and Freddie Lonzo on trombone. Titles include "The Majesty Of The Blues", "Hickory Dickory Dock", and the expanded "New Orleans Function" suite. CD

John McLaughlinDevotion ... CD
Fuel 2000, 1970. Used ... $6.99
An intensely jamming album from guitarist John McLaughlin – and a record that set a whole new tone for electric jazz in the 70s! The album was recorded shortly after McLaughlin's work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and Tony Williams on the first Emergency album – and in a way, it's a key piece of the jazz-rock fusion puzzle that has those two sets as cornerstones. McLaughlin's working here with keyboardist Larry Young from the Emergency group – playing both his usual organ on the record, plus a bit of electric piano – and the rest of the group includes bassist Billy Rich, plus superdrummer Buddy Miles – really giving a lot of power to the album's sound at the bottom! McLaughlin is getting into a bit of his mystic trip on the record, but is still playing with a lot of electric power here – plenty distorted and fuzzy on most numbers, and really jamming throughout! Titles include "Devotion", "Dragon Song", "Marbles", "Siren", "Don't Let The Dragon Eat Your Mother", and "Purpose Of When". CD

✨✧ John McLaughlinElectric Guitarist ... CD
Columbia, 1978. Used ... $3.99
A key change for John McLaughlin – post-Mahavishnu, post-Shakti, and very much the electric guitarist promised in the title! The album's one of McLaughlin's more professional fusion outings of the 70s, but still has some of the earthiness of his roots – and despite a rather large lineup that includes players from both previous groups, plus some 70s fusion superstars, John still manages to make the album come across with a nicely personal feel. Guitars are acoustic and electric, six string and twelve – and titles include "Miles Davis", "Guardian Angels", "Singing Earth", "The Dark Prince", "The Unknown Dissident", and "Desire & The Contorter". Mal Waldron with Eric Dolphy & Booker ErvinQuest ... CD
New Jazz/OJC, 1961. Used ... $8.99
Pivotal work from Waldron – stepping out of the blowing session mode, emerging as one of the 60s most striking moderinists. Like a lot of Waldron's records from the time, this set shows an amazing desire for new forms and modern ideas, and the mix of players – Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Ron Carter, Joe Benjamin, and Charlie Persip – pulls the material in a number of different ways. Carter plays bowed cello, as he did on Dolphy's Out There session, and he gives the set a dark moody feel. Ervin's in his best modernist mode, and he ably trades lines with Dolphy and keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Waldron's writing and arranging is superb, and the tracks feature a lot of weird time structures and unusual modal patterns. Includes the tracks "Status Seeking", "Warm Canto", "Warp and Woof", and "Fire Waltz". CD

Kamasi WashingtonHarmony Of Difference ... CD
Young Turks, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99
Pure fantasticness from the great Kamasi Washington – a set that's much more compact than his sprawling Epic, but which has an equally wonderful vibe overall! The album features material that Washington performed at the Whitney Biennial – to accompany paintings by his sister – but the whole thing stands alone beautifully, with that free-flowing, always spiritual vibe that's made Washington one of the strongest young jazz talents to emerge in recent years! The music resonates strongly with the work of some of his key LA contemporaries – like Ronald Bruner Jr, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Thundercat – all of whom perform in the large ensemble – helping Kamasi's tenor soar to the skies on waves of collaborative joy. Washington composed, arranged, and even produced the record himself – and in some ways, the tightness of the performance makes the whole thing even more satisfying than Epic – as we hope you feel too, on titles that include "Desire", "Humility", "Truth", "Integrity", "Knowledge", and "Perspective". ✨✧ Cairo Free Jazz EnsembleHeliopolis ... LP
Holidays (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most striking Egyptian jazz recordings of the 70s – and maybe one of the most avant, too – an unusual recording done at the German Culture Institute in Cairo, and an early collaboration between Hartmut Geerken and Salah Ragab! Ragab plays drums and percussion – but the approach is very different than his more rhythmic Cairo Jazz Band dates – as the group here really live up to the "free jazz" in their name – and come across more like the Sun Ra Arkestra during their greatest moments of free improvisation! Other players include Farouk Abdel Rahman on alto and percussion, Abdel Hakim Zael on baritone sax, Moohi El-Din Osman on bass, and Mahmoud Ayoub on tenor – and Geerken himself plays a wide range of percussive instruments and other items – including a "toy car producing the sound of a siren". Titles include "Liberty For Iratilim", "Turnus", and "Diagnosis For Percussion". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1965. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hard to be unhappy in a setting like this – a classic RCA session from the 60s, and one that matches the sublime icy alto sax of Paul Desmond with the perfectly airy guitar of the great Jim Hall! The pair work simple wonders with familiar tunes on the set – bringing together a love of the understated, mixed with a desire to delight and surprise – a quality that plays out wonderfully throughout the course of the record, and keeps us hanging with a sense of joy and delight. The group's completed by bass and drums – with no piano for rhythm, leaving the guitar and alto suspended in mid-air – and titles include "Any Other time", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "Poor Butterfly", "Stranger In Town", and "Taste Of Honey". ECM, 1973. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Warm and wonderful sounds from saxophonist Jan Garbarek – and a record that brings together so many strands at once! There's of course the obvious atmospherics you might expect from a 70s set on ECM – but there's also some sharply modern moments too – that harder sound that the label was endorsing while helping to shape the world of European jazz on both sides of the fence. And there's even some surprisingly soulful moments, too – not just from Jan's work on tenor and soprano sax, but also from the piano of Bobo Stenson – which rings out wonderfully amidst subtle bass from Palle Danielsson and drums from Jon Christensen. Titles include a great version of Jim Pepper's "Witchi Tai To", plus "Hasta Siempre", "AIR", and "Desireless". LP, Vinyl record album

Remarkable modern jazz, from one of the most unique voices in the genre! Hill's piano work and compositions fall into a category of their own, working outside the limits of predominant bop sound, but not quite falling into the world of free jazz that rules the avant scene. Sister Love/Jazzaggression (Estonia), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unique album by an all-female jazz group from the LA scene of the 70s – a group who were part of the feminist collective of artists distributed by Olivia Records, but who are maybe even more righteous than the rest! The group mix together jazz and poetry – the latter of which is both sung and spoken, and often has these wonderful ways of tying together personal desires and inclinations with larger political issues – all while the rest of the combo is laying down a spiritual current of piano, percussion, bass, and strong solos on tenor and flute from Cyndy Mason Fitzpatrick. The centerpiece of the record is the extended suite "The Common Woman" – based around the poetry of Judy Grahan – and that's balanced out by a fair bit more instrumental work at other times on the set – on titles that include "Degradation", "Mi Amor", "Genesis", "SAd Are The Days", and "1234".
