One of the most righteous albums ever from jazz vibes legend Johnny Lytle – a soaring, spacious set that's almost to Lytle's career what Gears was to Johnny Hammond's! Of course, Lytle's groove here is different – no Mizell production, and a mellower feel overall – but the unbridled space of 70s Milestone is definitely a key influence here – and Johnny stretches out here like never before! The players are all pretty hip – and include Daahoud Hadi (aka Butch Cornell) on electric piano and organ, Marvin Cabell on flute and tenor, Bob Cranshaw on bass, Betty Glamann on harp, and Jozell Carter on drums – all perfect mates here for Johnny's spiritual exploration of sound with his vibes – in ways that are almost more amazing than work from Bobby Hutcherson or Roy Ayers at the time! A very well-done collection of Charlie Parker performances from the legendary Birdland nightclub – originally presented on radio, but cleaned up here with a great sense of sound! The mighty Symphony Sid can be heard introducing a few tracks, but the main focus is on the music – with the kind of razor-sharp solos that always made Parker a knockout, especially during these key early 50s years – and accompaniment from musicians who include Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell or John Lewis on piano, Kenny Clarke or Roy Haynes on drums, and even the surprising inclusion of organist Milt Buckner at one point! The album may well be worth it, just to hear Bird playing with a Hammond – but the whole thing's great, and titles include "Cool Blues", "Star Eyes", "Blue N Boogie", "Anthropology", "Night In Tunisia", and "Groovin High". A lightly grooving set from organist Shirley Scott – never that earth-shattering, but a pretty great album nonetheless! Shirley's keys dance nicely around rhythms from Earl May on bass and Roy Brooks on drums – never too complicated, but a bit more progressive than usual – and set up in a way that really lets the Hammond dominate the tracks, and stretch out in a bit more improvisation than some of Scott's other Prestige sessions. Tracks are slightly long, and titles include "Happy Talk", "Jitterbug Waltz", "My Romance", "Where Or When", and "Sweet Slumber". LP, Vinyl record album

Two hip records from organist Shirley Scott – back to back on a single CD! First up is Hip Soul – early Shirley Scott at her best – working with husband Stanley Turrentine to craft a great set of soul jazz tracks! The mood is laidback and easygoing, and honestly, it's Turrentine's deeply soulful solos that really make the set crackle – bringing an edge to the record that Shirley didn't always have, even on her earlier recordings with Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Stan's tone is superb – with a subtle rasp that really breaks open the sound – and his playing is extremely well-handled – always keeping us on the edge of our seat, blowing as he goes with incredible confidence and creativity! The rest of the group features Herb Lewis on bass and Roy Brooks on drums – and titles include "Trane's Blues", "Hip Soul", "411 West", "By Myself", and "Stanley's Time". On Hip Twist, Shirley's joined by husband Stanley Turrentine, whose tenor work on any Scott album always takes it to the next level! Stan's tone is still nice and raw here – blowing out some hard and soulful lines that are the perfect complement to Shirley's more composed work on the Hammond. The rest of the group includes George Tucker on bass and Otis Finch on drums – and tracks include "Hip Twist", "Violent Blues", "That's All", "All Tore Down", and "Rippin & Runnin". CD

A triple-tenor powerhouse – as Doug Webb invites Walt Weiskopf and Joel Frahm in for the sessions – and things really begin to cook! The trio get this raw, spare accompaniment from Brian Charette on Hammond and Rudy Royston on drums – which leaves the tenors plenty of room to open up, stretch out, and really do their thing – coming together as unified voices on the heads, then breaking out into really well-crafted, well-defined individual solos. The feel is a bit like some of those great Don Patterson albums of the 60s, but even more modern – and titles include "Jazz Car", "Giant Steps", "Three's A Crowd", "Jones", "Pail Blues", and "Triple Play". An interesting little album by Basie – most notable in that it features him playing a bit of organ, which is always a treat! Basie's not the greatest talent on the organ, but he is one of the first jazz players to use the instrument in a wider context, and hearing the album's a good way to check out the organ jazz scene and sound before Jimmy Smith got his hands atop the Hammond and shook the whole thing up! Players on the set include Freddie Green, Paul Quinichette, Buddy Rich, and Joe Newman – and titles include "Stan Shorthair", "Count's Organ Blues", "KC Organ Blues", "Royal Garden Blues", and "Basie Beat". One of the hippest Jimmy Smith albums of the early 70s – a lean and mean, down and dirty, back to basics session for Verve – one that's got plenty of grit in the grooves! L:ike the Root Down album, this set is recorded live with a very stretched out feel – tracks that take Jimmy Smith back to the more open-ended styles of his roots, and get past some of the slicker notes of later years. There's not as much heavy funk as on Root Down, but the sound is still equally great – with plenty of sharp edges on the instrumentation, which includes Jimmy's Hammond alongside bass from Leroy Vinnegar, tenor from Teddy Edwards, guitar from Ray Crawford, drums from Donald Dean, and congas from Victor Pantoja. One title – "Blues For 3 + 1" – hits a great little groove that's almost bossa-funky – and other tracks include "Absolutely Funky", "Lolita", "Bluesmith", and "Mournin Wes". CD

One of our favorite albums by Teddy Edwards – and one with some organ in the group! This obscure quartet side has Gerry Wiggins playing a rare bit of Hammond – grooving the group with a lean and open-ended soul jazz approach that really has Edwards blowing at his best! The style sits right up there next to Gene Ammons' best albums of the time, and the rest of the group features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Milt Turner on drums. Titles include "Smokin", "No Regrets", "A Bag Of Blues", "Wiggin", and "Little Steddy" – all originals that get Edwards past the usual bag of soulful standards! LP, Vinyl record album
