✨✧ Angelilo & HamelComplicite ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A jazz record, but one with so much going on it's impossible to pin down – strands of influences from Latin, Brazilian, and other modes – mixed with occasional vocal contributions too! The vibe is a bit like some of those really creative criss-crossings on the French scene of the 70s – maybe like a record on Saravah – and maybe that's no surprise, given that the set is French Canadian – a meeting in the studio between bassist/arranger Vic Angelillo and pianist Henri Hamel – in a lineup that features guitars, trumpet, alto, soprano sax, flute, and some nice electric piano too! Vocalists include Ranee Lee, Leo Monast, Yolanda Lisi, and Claude Leveilee – and the whole thing has a really groovy vibe. Titles include "Quand On Verra Mon Ame", "Paix", "On Ne Sait Plus", "Un Ile Perdue", "Le Gout D'Aimer", "L'Eau De L'Ennui", and "Valse D'Une Ile". LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis with Sonny StittLive In Paris – 1960 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1960. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99
Rare work from a sometimes-overlooked chapter in the career of Miles Davis – a time when Sonny Stitt was briefly filling the tenor sax role that was more famously held by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter! Stitt in any group is always a treat – and here, working with Miles, he turns in some of his most far-reaching solos of the period – very different than the shorter, more economical work of his studio albums – and even different than some of his longer-form material on Prestige to come! Stitt really rises to meet Miles in spirit – maybe in part because of the rest of the group features the famous rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – moving hard and with a great sense of modal energy, on titles that include "Four", "All Of You", "No Blues", "Two Bass Hit", "Walkin", "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "If I Were A Bell", and "Round Midnight". ✨✧ Beverly Glenn-CopelandBeverly Copeland (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBC/Return To Analog (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. Titles include "Northwind", "Swords Of Gold", "Don't Despair", "Nothing Beautiful", "Song From Beads", "Untitled", "Interval", "Reflections", and "Durocher". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny GreenwichSun Song ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the great Sonny Greenwich – an open-toned guitarist with a style that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a Canadian player who never got much exposure down here in the US, but who really stands apart from most of the jazz guitarists of his generation! There's this unusual sense of color and phrasing that really makes Sonny stand out – chords that almost feel as if they're broken open and exposed from a Wes Montgomery sort of tightness – able to move with a sense of fluidity, but a unique sense of rhythm that's definitely Greenwich's own. The rest of the group here really match the spirit of his music – maybe more so than on any other record of his as a leader – a great lineup that includes Don Thompson on electric and acoustic piano, Rick Homme on bass, Terry Clarke on drums, and Clayton Johnson on percussion. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Peace Chant", "Lilly Lotus", "Parting", and "Starlight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sadik HakimSadik Hakim (London Suite) ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest moments ever from pianist Sadik Hakim – a player most people know for his contribution to the American bop scene of the late 40s – but an artist who grew even more strongly during his later years in Montreal! This album's a real highlight from that overlooked time in Hakim's career – a set that not only has the musician playing both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, but which also highlights his tremendous skill as a writer, too – with a richness that easily rivals the best on the European scene of the time – such as some of our favorite London jazz musicians, or the great work on MPS. Side one features the extended "London Suite" – a work that's poetic, but also pretty darn groovy too – and side two features on shorter compositions that include "Liliane", "Grey Cup Caper", and "Moon In Aquarius" – all carried off beautifully by a group that includes Al Khabyyr Sayyd Abdul on alto and flute, Billy Robinson on tenor, and Peter Leitch on guitar. Thelonious MonkLive In Paris 1961 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1961. New Copy ... $18.99
Fantastic work from Thelonious Monk – a superbly-recorded live set from early 60s Paris – done with his legendary quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor! The music here is wonderful – tracks that are often quite long, and stretched out nicely from the Columbia Records material by the group – with especially long improvisations by Monk that really reignite our respect for his genius – and the kind of soulful solos from Rouse that are always a perfect match! The bass of John Ore is beautifully recorded too – maybe even more powerful here than usual – and Frankie Dunlop completes the group with wonderfully deft work on drums. Titles include "Well You Needn't", "Jackie-ing", "Hackensack", and "Rhythm A Ning". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ OffenbachEn Fusion 40th Anniversaire – Le Show Complet ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1979. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful mix of Quebecois prog and fusion – performed here by the core group Offenbach, working with larger accompaniment from the Vic Vogel Big Band! The performance is a unique one, but also a summation of all the freewheeling ideas that were taking place in this overlooked scene – echoes of European music mixing with more homegrown execution – and coming off brilliantly throughout. This special 2LP edition features six tracks that were no on the original release, and a bonus instrumental cut too – with titles that include "A L'Envers", "Vagabond", "Sad Song", "Teddy", "High Down", "Promenade Sur Mars", and "Duke's Shuffle". ✨✧ Billy RobinsonEvolution's Blend ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from overlooked Candian tenorist Billy Robinson – a hell of a player, and one who might have been huge if this album were issued on a regular label in the US – instead of as a project by Radio Canada up north! Robinson has a wonderful vision here – gently spiritual, but in a more straight ahead way – working in this relaxed soulful combo that really sparkles with piano from Pierre Leduc and guitar from Peter Leitch – the latter of whom is a chromatic genius, in the Sonny Greenwich school – and really finds a great way to illuminate the tunes! Robinson's tone dominates, but the album's also got rock-solid rhythms from Erroll Waters on bass and Jim Norman on drums – on original tunes that include "Quebec On My Mind", "Evolution's Blend", "The Family", "It's Raining Ashes", and "Homing". ✨✧ Horace SilverLive In Paris 1959 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1959. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful late 50s live recording from the Horace Silver Quintet – one that features some very long performances of key songs from the group's book, with some very extended solos, and a much different vibe than some of the studio versions! As with the Jazz Messengers during this time, the Silver group just couldn't miss – and they really brought something special to live performances, which could often give Horace space to be expressive in completely different ways, and the horn players a chance to state their genius even more than ever! In this case, the genius talents are Junior Cook on tenor and Blue Mitchell on trumpet – in the group with Gene Taylor on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Titles include an 18 minute take on "Doodlin", a 12 minute take on "Senor Blues", and a long version of "Sweet Stuff". LP, Vinyl record album

Guy WarrenAfro Jazz (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Return To Analog (Canada), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A completely wonderful album from percussionist Guy Warren – a creative musician who made lots of great records over the years – but who maybe never topped himself after this gem from the late 60s UK scene! The set was done as part of the legendary Landsdowne Series for Columbia UK – and features Warren's percussion alongside some key Brit jazz talents – including Don Rendell on tenor and soprano saxes, Ian Carr on trumpet, Amancio D'Silva on guitar, and Michael Garrick on piano! Warren composed and arranged the whole thing, and brings in plenty of percussion too – but the album really gets its depth from the presence of these modern jazz giants – all of whom really shape the sound with wonderful contributions and some very strong solos. Titles include "Burning Bush", "I Love The Silence", "Africa Speaks India Answers", "Ours This Is Our Land", "Yaw Barima", "That Happy Feeling", and "Builsa". (Global Grooves, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(2nd pressing on yellow vinyl – limited to 500!)
