Tremendous work from tenorist George Coleman – featured here in the sort of setting that really reminds us of his genius when allowed to really open up and blow! The tracks are long, and the material was recorded by the Left Bank Jazz Society – that Baltimore-based organization that's managed to capture important (and excellent) sessions over the years, including classics from Lee Morgan and Wynton Kelly. Coleman was on one of the Kelly dates, but is even better here as a leader – and works with an unusual group that includes Danny Moore on trumpet, Albert Dailey on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Harold White on drums – with nice use of trumpet that keeps the record from being very different than just a live date from a tenorist with rhythm section. A fitting title for this one – because Eric Alexander is one of our favorite things in jazz – and albums like this are the reason why! Alexander's tenor is in very sharp-edged formation here – working with a familiar quartet of David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and hitting an open, expressive solo mode on every number! The more upbeat tunes are filled with the quick-thinking, freely-creative work that links Eric's tenor to that of Sonny Rollins in his best years – and the mellower tracks almost show some of the soulfulness of Stanley Turrentine or Hank Mobley. But after dozens of recordings, Alexander hardly needs to be compared to anyone else – as he clearly stands on his own as one of the few living giants in jazz. A record that really carries its message in its title – a set of spiritual ruminations on the nature of existence – inspired by the writings of Sun Ra, and carried off with vocals by Dwight Trible – who joins this Italian group for the recording! Each song is inspired by a different poem from Ra's This Planet Is Doomed – and the music is freely improvised, but in a relatively spiritual way – with leader Tommaso Cappellato on drums, with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and keyboards, Piero Bittolo Bon on reeds and electronics, and Marco Privato on bass. The set may be one of the most avant albums that Trible ever recorded – and his vocals have the strong resonance of his straighter recordings, but a bit more bite, and a really mighty reach – on titles that include "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Infinity", "Science Has Changed", "The End", "Time", and "You Are From This Planet". Early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Fantastic French material from Chet Baker – one of his legendary albums recorded for the Barclay label in Paris – and a set that's noteworthy for also featuring work from modern jazz pianist Richard (Dick) Twardzik – who passed away shortly after the sessions! The pairing of Baker and Twardzik is one of the best of Chet's 50s years – and the group here is rounded out by the excellent Jimmy Bond on bass, and Peter Littman on drums. There's a nice bite to the set – a bit more than some of Baker's west coast material from the year or two before – and there's also an undercurrent of some of the soul that would emerge in his solos in coming years. A record that's a really nice change from the usual, especially for Peter Brotzmann – maybe more in the special sort of spirit that Misha Mengelberg can bring to some of his performances – especially when he's on the more sensitive side of the spectrum! That's definitely the case here, as the players have a way of moving carefully, sometimes tunefully – while still improvising freely, and creating the kinds of sounds that only they can unlock from their instruments – Brotzmann on alto, tenor, bass clarinet, and e-flat clarinet – plus Misha Mengelberg on piano, and Han Bennink on drums and a range of other instruments. Mengelberg vocalizes a bit while playing piano – which we always enjoy – and titles include "There & Zuruck", "Met We Beleefde Groete Van De Kamel", and "3 Points & A Mountain". There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. This is the rare first take of Ascension, and it differs greatly from the second take, which is the more widely available one. It's designated by the fact that the recording doesn't say "Version II" on the runoff groove. One of the freest, most exploratory albums ever recorded by Coltrane – and a unique session done with an expanded group of some of the most important avant jazz players of his generation! The format here is similar to Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz album – in that the music is freely improvised, and spans the entire LP as a non-stop performance – one that has Coltrane in the lead, but which also features alto from Marion Brown and John Tchicai, tenor from Archie Shepp and Pharaoh Sanders, trumpet from Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson – and core rhythms from McCoy Tyner on piano, drums from Elvin Jones, and double basses from Art Davis and Jimmy Garrison. An incredible chapter of John Coltrane's early career – one of a pair of albums he cut with trumpeter Wilbur Harden for Savoy records! The title's a bit misleading, as the sound here really isn't "mainstream" at all – but more in the longer modal mode that would emerge more strongly in Coltrane's later recordings. The album is really significant – in that it almost marks the first time that Trane got to express his voice freely, and work through a more visionary sound – but big credit also goes to Wilbur Harden, who wrote all the longer tracks on the set, and who is coming at the record from kind of a Yusef Lateef exotic perspective. Other players include Tommy Flanagan and Lateef-bandmates Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums – and titles include "West 42nd Street", "EFFPH", "Snuffy", and "Rhodomagnetics". That's "Take Ten", not "Take Five" – a great title cut that echoes Paul Desmond's previous work with Dave Brubeck – but which then gives way quickly to some sweet bossa-styled grooves done with guitar from Jim Hall! The album's one of the strongest of the Hall/Desmond collaborations for RCA – A sublime showcase not just for Paul's impeccable alto, but also for the amazing tones and chromes that fly freely from the strings of Jim's guitar! Both players are set up with just a bit of gentle backing – light percussion from Connie Kay, and a bit of bass from Gene Cherico or Gene Wright. The whole thing's a well-conceived study in economy, as the two players craft sly and subtle lines around spare drum and bass backings – slowly hanging sound in space to weave a rich web of sound that's as compelling as it seems to be effortless! Wonderful work by Dolphy – as essential to his catalog as any of his albums on Prestige from the same time! Although Dolphy broke plenty of musical barriers in the studio, to our ears, it was always in a live setting that he sounded best – freely exploring the kind of space his playing opened up, hitting notes that were more soulful and spiritual than many that he ever recorded on his studio sides. This set is a perfect example of that trend – as Dolphy's working here with a strong straight jazz combo, one that includes the great Benny Bailey on trumpet, in a set that features familiar tunes, turned into haunting explorations of Dolphy's new jazz idiom. One of the highlights is an incredible 15 minute version of Randy Weston's "Hi Fly", with Dolphy doing great work on flute – and other tunes include "Hot House", "Geewee", "When Lights Are Low", "I'll Remember April", and "The Meeting". Two classic Eric Dolphy albums – back to back in a single set! First up us Outward Bound – Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. Dolphy plays his usual mix of alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and the tracks include "245", "Miss Toni", "Les", and "GW". Out There is Eric Dolphy's second album as a leader – and already a bold step forward from the first! The format here changes from the more standard lineup of before – as Dolphy drops out other horn players, loses the piano, and brings the cello of Ron Carter into the frontline! Backing is by the bass of George Duvivier and the drums of Roy Haynes – and the mix of cello and bass creates the freely spirited sound that allows Dolphy to take off on even freer solo flights. The session has a very moody, very dark feel – especially on the tracks where Dolphy is playing B flat and bass clarinet – and titles include "The Baron", "Eclipse", "Sketch Of Melba", "Feathers", and "17 West". Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxly on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time! A key recording from one of our favorite tenor talents of the 80s – the amazing Ralph Moore, a player who really carries on a strong legacy from the 60s work of Hank Mobley! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You". Something of a "lost" album from Sun Ra – material initially intended as his second album for Transition records in the 50s, but not issued until a decade later when Delmark Records was first putting the Chicago underground on the map! The sound here steps out nicely from the first Transition session – and Ra is already a bit bolder, not just in his structure of the songs, but in the way he handles his piano – with some darker notes and tones, more exotic phrasing, and even some very early use of electric piano – already with the haunting qualities that would show up more strongly in the Saturn years. Nice Prestige 2-fer from the 70s that brings together 2 great albums. Speak, Brother, Speak is solid righteous jazz from the Max Roach of the 60s – recorded at a time when the player was really breaking away from his straighter hardbop roots, and delving deeper into more freely soulful jazz expression! It features 2 long tracks – each a side apiece – played by Max with a quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Khan on bass, and Mal Waldron on piano. Jordan really takes off on the album – demonstrating a great ability for long blowing and creative exploration that was only hinted at on his other studio sessions at the time, and which really points the way towards some of his freer-thinking records of the 70s. Waldron is great too – bringing in some nicely darker colors that really help to round out the sound. Titles include "Speak Brother Speak" and "A Variation". Deeds, Not Words is another classic Max Roach session, from a bit earlier in 1958, with Booker Little, George Coleman, Art Davis, and Ray Draper. The album's got a couple of great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha Cha" and "Deeds, Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", which is one of those tracks that you know you've heard, but can never recognize. A rare non-Impulse Records album from the early days of Pharoah Sanders – but a set that ranks right up there with his classics for that legendary label! The album's one of the classics in Strata East's Dolphy Series – and it's a uniquely collaborative session from 1969, one that has Sanders working with a largeish group that includes Sonny Fortune on alto sax, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Leon Thomas on vocals, and Cecil McBee on bass – all coming together with a freely exploratory sort of energy, one that's a bit like some of Archie Shepp's most righteous sides from the same time. Sanders' tenor still dominates most numbers, but not as much as on some of the Impulse sides – and there's a nicely relaxed and personal feel to the whole album. The album features 3 long tracks – "Prince Of Peace", which has Leon Thomas doing his "Creator Has A Master Plan" thing, and the cuts "Balance" and "Izipho Zam", the latter of which jams for a full 28 minutes! Quite a nice little album from Pharoah – the kind of session we always overlooked when we were digging for Impulse titles, and which we're now going back to, and almost appreciating more than the classic ones! The album's a quartet session – recorded live, of course – with a freely swinging rhythm section that features John Hicks, Walter Booker, and Idris Muhammad. The centerpiece of the album is a long quartet version of "You've Got To Have Freedom" – one that's nice and grooving, but in a very different way than the more famous studio version. The soundtrack is one of Philippe Sarde's greatest of the 70s – warm and mellow, with a dark edge that's fitting for the moody Georges Lautner film that accompanied it. But the real treat here is Getz – who solos with that freely exploratory tone that he brought to some of his best later recordings – a style started with the classic Sweet Rain, and brought into play on the Dynasty and Captain Marvel albums, both of which were some of his greatest work of later years. There's nothing wooden about this music at all – as the album's one of the loosest, freest, liveliest sessions to ever come from the legendary trumpeter Tomasz Stanko – a performance that was originally done for Radio Bremen in 1972, and which is very different than most of his other albums from the time! The music here is all freely improvised, with a vibe that's at the headiest of the FMP generation – as Stanko's trumpet interacts with the tenor and flute of Janusz Muniak, bass of Bronislaw Suchanek, violin of Zbigniew Seifert, and drums of Janusz Stefanski – all players who are completely unbridled all the way through! If you only know Seifert from his mellower albums later in the 70s, he'll blow you away here – as, like a few other key musicians at the time, he's got a way of improvising on his instrument that matches the energy of a reedman – and which really adds a lot to the group. Nothing "country" about this record – as Japanese guitarist Kiyoshi Sugimoto keeps things very hip and contemporary – working in a freely fluid style that also has a few funky touches as well! The group on the set is a quartet – with Kiyoshi's guitar amidst piano, bass, and drums – the last of which are played by Motohiko Hino with a nice little snap that brings a groove to the record, even when the tunes are long and open-ended. Sugimoto's got a richly chromatic way of playing the guitar that's really great – a sound that would have been very much at home on a Gary Burton album from the late 60s, but which comes across even better here in the wonderfully creative style of the session. A real standout in the classic catalog of ECM – not only because the record's got a slightly different inspiration than most, but also because it seems to unlock some especially beautiful moments from players who could sound different in other settings on the label! As the title indicates, the tunes here all take inspiration from the poetry of Robert Creeley – but never in a mode that's got the usual jazz meets poetry approach – as Sheila Jordan sings the lyrics when they appear, with a sense of her own power that's very different than a more standard recitation – and which, to us, really feels a lot like her great vocal performances with Steve Kuhn for ECM. Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp – two key modern figures of the 60s, working here together in a seminal session recorded at the start of the decade! The album's approach is definitely dictated by Taylor – as the tunes have a piano-driven quality that's quite different than most music Shepp would later record – although Archie still manages to get in plenty of great moments on tenor! You can really hear Cecil breaking out of his earlier sound on the record – stretching forth in some of the more freely expressive ways that would dominate later, yet never too free – almost with a hint of modern swing at some points. A nice little set from Henry Threadgill – one of the albums that gave him greatest exposure to a bigger audience, and a set that pushes the sound of his work nicely! The record's got some of those touches from a time when the AACM was reaching out with its sound from earlier years – a mode that's not exactly more inside, but certainly more overtly expressive about its intentions, and sometimes a bit more melodically focused than freely improvisatory. There's echoes here of work the Art Ensemble and Amina Claudine Myers were doing during the same stretch – and the lack of commercial success of the record shouldn't indicate any aesthetic failure at all. Asha Puthli makes a surprising vocal appearance on the track "My Rock", and other players include Frank Lacy, Diedre Murray, Fred Hopkins, Pheeroan Aklaff, and Reggie Nicholson. A great example of the keyboard talent that made Gerald Wiggins one of the most striking players on the LA scene of the 50s! Wiggins had a really fresh approach to the piano at the time – a style that was partly bluesy, but which also had the lighter flourishes of some of the more popular pianists of his generation – dipping down into blue notes one moment, then flying freely over the top of the keys the next. The style was never overly dramatic, and it's also got traces of some of the later soul jazz sounds that would emerge from the west coast as the 60s approached.
