The format here changes from the more standard lineup of before – as Dolphy drops out other horn players, loses the piano, and brings the cello of Ron Carter into the frontline! Backing is by the bass of George Duvivier and the drums of Roy Haynes – and the mix of cello and bass creates the freely spirited sound that allows Dolphy to take off on even freer solo flights. Excellent early work by Lou Donaldson – recorded years before his electric funky period, and hard-grooving in the best Blue Note harbop style of the time! Lou's work on alto is impeccable here – crisp, clear, and freed from a Parker-like influence to roam freely in soulful territory that represented some of the best work of its type on the alto at the time! The group is tight and very in the pocket – with excellent Donaldson accompanist Herman Foster on piano, plus trumpet from Donald Byrd, bass from Peck Morrison, and drums from Art Taylor. Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Freely creative work from pianist Bobby Few – a talent whose work shows up on a number of key 70s sessions in Paris, but who hardly ever got to record as a leader on his own! The setting here is a trio one – with Bobby mostly on piano, plus a bit of voice and melodica – alongside Alan Silva on bass and Muhammad Ali on drums. The work echoes with inspiration from past recordings by both of those players, but also really shines in Few's inherently rhythmic approach to a tune – a style that's still pulsating and grooving in subtle ways, even when his lines are quite free. An amazing debut from pianist Clare Fischer – an artist who went onto have a subtle, but immediate influence upon both the American and Brazilian jazz scenes of the time! Fischer's got a lyrical approach to rhythm that's simply amazing – modern, but never cold and academic – and instead always freely dancing around, in a way that gives equal melodic roles to the bass and drums in his trio. There's a clear bossa nova inspiration here, but keep in mind that Fischer's sensibility was also a big influence on the bossa players of the time. The whole session sparkles with a fresh genius that still beats the work of most players still recording today – and Fischer's piano is accompanied by equally free-thinking work on bass by Gary Peacock and drums by Gene Stone. Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. Some of the best work that Stan Getz ever recorded – a fantastic collaboration with French soundtrack maestro Michel Legrand! The album features larger orchestrations by Legrand, often touched with voices – swirling, swaying, and swinging in a style that's as hip, modern, and fresh as some of the greatest soundtracks Legrand wrote in the 60s. The setting lets Stan really open up – blowing freely in his best post-Coltrane mode, but with a tightness that's missing from other records – and a soulful approach to the tunes that really leaves us breathless! Tremendous stuff – a record that's unlike anything else we can describe, and one we've treasured for years! We love this one to death, and never tire of hearing it! An incredible batch of freely crafted tracks from Jimmy Giuffre's legendary early 60s trio! The group features Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Bley on piano, and the two young modernists were a perfect match of Giuffre's ever-developing ideas of freedom and harmony. The music is beautiful – with a sound that's like nothing else we can describe, and an approach that's free floating (or free falling), but never directionless, and never overindulgent. Perfectly measured, with a strong sense of melody and rhythm, even amidst the more outside moments. Titles include "Propulsion", "Threewe", "Dichotomy", "Man Alone", and "Divided Man". A seminal bit of early soul jazz guitar work from Tiny Grimes – a player better known for his work in an R&B vein, but an excellent jazz-based talent on this tasty session! Tiny's working here with a group that includes Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor and Ray Bryant on piano, in a mode that opens up the album's 4 long tracks into freely flowing vehicles for improvisation. Trombonist JC Higginbotham brings a nice "bottom" sound to the record, making for a slightly unusual frontline – and titles include "Blue Tiny", "Callin The Blues", "Grimes Times", and "Airmail Special". A great live set from pianist Barry Harris – material recorded on the same date that gave us the excellent Live In Tokyo album from reedman Charles McPherson – but done in a very different way that shows that Barry's clearly the leader on these tracks! The rhythm duo is wonderful – the mighty Sam Jones on bass and Leroy Williams on drums – players who can crackle when Harris wants them to, yet also lay back and give Barry lots of spacious territory to work some incredibly deft, personal magic on the keys. The sound almost takes us back to the initial Harris recordings of the early 60s, but also has some of those colors that would flow even more freely in some of his sessions for the Japanese market – on titles that include "I'll Remember April", "Fukai Aijo", "A Soft Spot", "Round Midnight", and "Un Poco Loco". A very interesting batch of tracks – one tune apiece by each of the artists named in the title, recorded between the years 1970 and 1973 at the Festival Ljublijana, in Yugoslavia. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxly on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time! A group that comes on with the sharply pointed force of their name – a really powerful presentation of sounds from Nate Wooley on trumpet, Chris Corsano on drums, and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten on bass! All three players are fantastic here – leaping right out of the box with an energy that clearly shows an implicit understanding of each others' strengths, and improvising freely in ways that are really wrapped around each other – not the single expressions of the three different egos in the group, but instead this really unified approach that makes the whole thing even more forceful overall! Haker-Flaten is especially impressive – a player who's always great, but whose fast, rumbling presence here really seems to move mountains – on titles that include "El Bound", "Chicago Deader", and "Blue Line" – all references to the Windy City pedigree of the set. Warm jazzy goodness from Katalyst – a west coast group comprised of musicians who normally back bigger names in soul, jazz, and hip hop – but who here work in a vibe that's all their own, on a set of tunes that are improvised freely, yet still have a groove! The music is often spacey and electric – mellow jams that take a minute to find their rhythm, then layer in all sorts of great solo activity on keyboards, trumpet, trombone, and tenor – shifting nicely from track to track, and making for the kind of laidback, yet collaborative sound that really fits the creation of the album! Titles include "FreeHand", "BBB", "Liemert Night", "Fresh Earth", "Fresh Wind", and "Fitted". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastically free session from the Japanese scene of the late 60s – a set that really points the way towards some of the more dramatic, dynamic guitar-based expression to come in later decades! The group's a trio, with guitarist Takayanagi Masayuki very firmly in the lead – playing his instrument in a range of compelling ways – bowing the strings one minute, plucking with Derek Bailey-like complexity the next – sometimes with heavy drums and bass, other times standing out in very free solo space. The whole album's got a very freely improvised feel, and stands as an early link between free jazz and experimental rock modes - with tracks that include "Piranha", "Herdsman's Pipe Of Spain", "The Galactic System", "Sick Sick Sickness My Aunt", and "Study No 3 Up & Down". A great bit of spiritual soul jazz – and one of the few albums as a leader recorded by the legendary bassist Cecil McBee! Cecil's joined here by a large group of players that includes Billy Hart on drums, George Adams on tenor, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano, Jimmy Hopps on percussion, Art Webb on flute, and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals – adding in just a touch of soulful color to the record, as she did on a few other 70s sides like this! The music's got that essential Strata East sound, with a rich and spiritual vibe on all tracks, and slight bits of funk hiding somewhere in the mix! Tracks are long and freely expressive – but never too outside, either – and titles include "Tulsa Black", "Feeling", "Life Waves", and "From Within". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most enigmatic albums that Charles Mingus ever recorded – especially in his later years! The set features two very long tracks done by Mingus for use in a film about cocaine traffic between New York and Columbia – but considering the nature of the music, and the freely exploratory style, both numbers here stand very well on their own! Although touched with some of the Latin influences you might expect from the title, the sounds are often darker and more brooding than, say, the Mingus style on the classic Tijuana Moods set. And instead, there's a very serious soundtrack-like vibe going on through most of the set – larger jazz orchestrations used to beautifully underscore subtle themes, and breakout solo moments from players who include Mauricio Smith on flute, Paul Jeffrey on tenor sax, Jack Walrath on trumpet, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone. The album also features a fair bit of added percussion – and features two long tracks, "Cumbia & Jazz Fusion" and "Music For Todo Modo". LP, Vinyl record album

A key recording from one of our favorite tenor talents of the 80s – the amazing Ralph Moore, a player who really carries on a strong legacy from the 60s work of Hank Mobley! Like Mobley, Moore's got a very rich-voiced sound that's steeped in tradition, but which is also never afraid to take chances too – a way of handling the tenor that few of his contemporaries could match, which is probably why Ralph's presence really upped the ante on so many dates at the time as a sideman. He's even better as a leader, though, and this standout set for Landmark is a real gem – a record filled with freely creative energy throughout, and a never-ending sense of soul – as Moore's tenor is set up nicely in a core group with Benny Green on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums – the latter of whom brings some of the same magic to this set that Billy Higgins did to Blue Note in the 60s. Terence Blanchard plays trumpet on 4 of the album's tracks – and titles include "Punjab", "Freeway", "Enigma", "Blues For John", "One Second Please", and "Episode From A Village Dance". One of the greatest gifts of the Soul Note label was the way that it could take sessions with avant-oriented players, and make them turn out straighter jazz material – but with a really nice edge! This session's a perfect example of that legacy – as it features David Murray at the head of a great group that includes Butch Morris on cornet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Henry Threadgill on alto and flute, Craig Harris on trombone, Curtis Clark on piano, Wilber Morris on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – all players who can usually improvise pretty freely, but who here work in a straighter, swinging mode that's totally great! There's still plenty of sharp edges in the record – odd twists and turns that really keep things offbeat, even though straight – and titles are extended Murray compositions that include "Sing Song", "Flowers For Albert", and "Murray's Steps". Completely unfettered solo saxophone work from Evan Parker – extremely intense, but not in an all-out blowing kind of way! Instead, Parker's got some incredible control on the valves here – playing with a frenetic sort of mode that's really incredible – freely improvising, but also really jamming too, with a dexterity that's simply amazing. That mix is what really set Parker apart from some of his contemporaries – a player who could be extremely sensitive at points, but also go head to head with some of the more fiercely-blown saxophonists of the European scene – and it's also a quality that's continued to make Parker so important as the decades move on. A surprising charmer from Houston Person – a record that steps off nicely from his more fully arranged sets on Mercury, and which serves up the same sort of a groove with a looser indie feel! The album kicks off with the wonderful 8 minute stepper "Pretty Please" – a snapping midtempo groove with a sweet slick feel – served up by a group that includes Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Virgil Jones, and Grady Tate doing some excellent work on drums. Sonny Phillips electrifies the tune with just the right amount of electric piano – making the track a wonderful soulful dancer. Etta Jones joins the group for the catchy "Please Mr Person" – taking them back into an older soul jazz mode, which continues in a nicely laidback vein on tracks that include "Mean To Me", "Freddie Freeloader", and "I Hope I Can Love Again". 2 classic albums from Oscar Peterson – packaged together in one 70s collection! First up is In a Romantic Mood – a rare "with strings" date! We love Oscar Peterson with strings – a setting he never got to use that often, given the popularity of his famous trio recordings! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You". Next is another unusual set – Swinging Brass With The Oscar Peterson Trio – one of Peterson's few albums with a larger group – featuring some great arrangements from Russ Garcia! Something of a "lost" album from Sun Ra – material initially intended as his second album for Transition records in the 50s, but not issued until a decade later when Delmark Records was first putting the Chicago underground on the map! The sound here steps out nicely from the first Transition session – and Ra is already a bit bolder, not just in his structure of the songs, but in the way he handles his piano – with some darker notes and tones, more exotic phrasing, and even some very early use of electric piano – already with the haunting qualities that would show up more strongly in the Saturn years. Every member of the group is wonderful too – each with their own voice, spoken strongly and freely – in a lineup that includes Art Hoyle and Dave Young on trumpets, Julian Priester on trombone, Pat Patrick on alto and baritone sax, John Gilmore on tenor, Charles Davis on baritone, Victor Sproles on bass, William Cochran on drums, and Jim Herndon on tympani and timbali. Titles include "El Is A Sound Of Joy", "Overtones Of China", "Ankh", "Two Tones", "Saturn", "Reflections In Blue", and "Planet Earth". LP, Vinyl record album

It's hard to get more powerful and progressive than the message this title – an indication that the record is one of the boldest in the Tribe Records catalog from the 70s – which is saying a lot, given the force of the legendary Detroit label! Trombonist Phil Ranelin is at his best here – not just as a soloist, but also as a guiding spiritual force – as he works here with a very progressive ensemble who are somewhere between Sun Ra's Arkestra and some of the loft jazz groups to come – effortlessly mixing free instrumental solo passages with more rhythmic pulsations – adding in electric elements in just the right way, to almost create a cosmic tension in the acoustic core of the performance. Keith Vreeland is listed as the pianist – and we're not sure if it's him who plays the weird and wonderful keyboards on the record, but they're totally great – mixed with Ranelin's work on trombone, plus Wendell Harrison on tenor, Marcus Belgrave on flugelhorn, Charles Moore on trumpet, and Harou El Nil on alto – plus strong work from two drummers, George Davidson and Bili Turner, each in one side of the mix – and bass from John Dana or Reggie Fields. This is message-oriented spiritual jazz at its best – and titles include "13th & Senate", "Black Destiny", "Time Is Running Out", "He The One We All Knew", and "The Time Is Now For A Change". Trombonist Phil Ranelin is at his best here – not just as a soloist, but also as a guiding spiritual force – as he works here with a very progressive ensemble who are somewhere between Sun Ra's Arkestra and some of the loft jazz groups to come – effortlessly mixing free instrumental solo passages with more rhythmic pulsations – adding in electric elements in just the right way, to almost create a cosmic tension in the acoustic core of the performance. Keith Vreeland is listed as the pianist – and we're not sure if it's him who plays the weird and wonderful keyboards on the record, but they're totally great – mixed with Ranelin's work on trombone, plus Wendell Harrison on tenor, Marcus Belgrave on flugelhorn, Charles Moore on trumpet, and Harou El Nil on alto – plus strong work from two drummers, George Davidson and Bili Turner, each in one side of the mix – and bass from John Dana or Reggie Fields. This is message-oriented spiritual jazz at its best – and titles include "13th & Senate", "Black Destiny", "Time Is Running Out", "He The One We All Knew", and "The Time Is Now For A Change". A Brazilian jazz keyboard masterpiece – a set you can put right up there next to the earliest records by Azymuth, even though this one's much more obscure! Keyboardist Marcos Resende never hit the kind of fame he deserved, but that also allowed him to be one of the most creative players on his scene – as he never had to go for crossover fusion material, and instead was able to let loose in amazing ways on a record like this – blending work on Fender Rhodes with other keyboards – in a quartet that features Rubao Sabino on bass, Claudio Caribe on drums, and Oberdan Magalhaes on tenor, soprano sax, and flute! The mix of reeds and keys is wonderful – spun out freely, but always with a strong sense of rhythm – that soaring, joyous approach to jazz that makes the best Brazilian albums of the period so wonderful. One of Sam Rivers' most freely expressive albums – a set of extended improvisations that features the leader on tenor, soprano, flute, and piano – really spinning out with some strongly expressive solos! The rest of the lineup is quite free too – with Dave Holland on bass and Barry Altschul on percussion – a pair who sometimes hit rhythmic impulses at the best moments, but also often stretch out and do their thing in a relatively free way too. Nice Prestige 2-fer from the 70s that brings together 2 great albums. Speak, Brother, Speak is solid righteous jazz from the Max Roach of the 60s – recorded at a time when the player was really breaking away from his straighter hardbop roots, and delving deeper into more freely soulful jazz expression! It features 2 long tracks – each a side apiece – played by Max with a quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Khan on bass, and Mal Waldron on piano. Jordan really takes off on the album – demonstrating a great ability for long blowing and creative exploration that was only hinted at on his other studio sessions at the time, and which really points the way towards some of his freer-thinking records of the 70s. Waldron is great too – bringing in some nicely darker colors that really help to round out the sound. Titles include "Speak Brother Speak" and "A Variation". Deeds, Not Words is another classic Max Roach session, from a bit earlier in 1958, with Booker Little, George Coleman, Art Davis, and Ray Draper. The album's got a couple of great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha Cha" and "Deeds, Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", which is one of those tracks that you know you've heard, but can never recognize. A crucially important record in Sonny Rollins' career – one that had him breaking out of the straight bop sound, and emerging as a major power on the tenor sax – one with limitless creative power! The set features Rollins working with only drum and bass accompaniment – played by Max Roach and Oscar Pettiford, respectively – and the lack of piano or other horns gives Rollins a free space in which to work his magic, doing so incredibly on the album's "Freedom Suite", an extended piece that runs for nearly 20 minutes, and which pushes all conceptions of the tenor's ability to solo freely on record. A great little later set from Charlie Rouse – recorded for the Landmark label, and done in a real "back to basics" style! The format is modern, Monkish hardbop – a full set of Thelonious originals, performed lovingly by Rouse, Monk's most important sideman of the 60s. The tunes are taken a bit more freely than on their classic readings by Monk – which is a good thing, as it makes the album much more than just a rehash of older themes. Players on the set include Don Cherry, George Cables, Buddy Montgomery, and Jessica Williams – and tunes include "Nutty", "Ruby My Dear", "Blue Monk", "Epistrophy", and "Round Midnight". A rare non-Impulse Records album from the early days of Pharoah Sanders – but a set that ranks right up there with his classics for that legendary label! The album's one of the classics in Strata East's Dolphy Series – and it's a uniquely collaborative session from 1969, one that has Sanders working with a largeish group that includes Sonny Fortune on alto sax, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Leon Thomas on vocals, and Cecil McBee on bass – all coming together with a freely exploratory sort of energy, one that's a bit like some of Archie Shepp's most righteous sides from the same time. Sanders' tenor still dominates most numbers, but not as much as on some of the Impulse sides – and there's a nicely relaxed and personal feel to the whole album. The album features 3 long tracks – "Prince Of Peace", which has Leon Thomas doing his "Creator Has A Master Plan" thing, and the cuts "Balance" and "Izipho Zam", the latter of which jams for a full 28 minutes! Quite a nice little album from Pharoah – the kind of session we always overlooked when we were digging for Impulse titles, and which we're now going back to, and almost appreciating more than the classic ones! The album's a quartet session – recorded live, of course – with a freely swinging rhythm section that features John Hicks, Walter Booker, and Idris Muhammad. The centerpiece of the album is a long quartet version of "You've Got To Have Freedom" – one that's nice and grooving, but in a very different way than the more famous studio version. A lost jazzy gem – featuring solo work by the great Stan Getz! The soundtrack is one of Philippe Sarde's greatest of the 70s – warm and mellow, with a dark edge that's fitting for the moody Georges Lautner film that accompanied it. But the real treat here is Getz – who solos with that freely exploratory tone that he brought to some of his best later recordings – a style started with the classic Sweet Rain, and brought into play on the Dynasty and Captain Marvel albums, both of which were some of his greatest work of later years. Tracks are shortish, and Getz plays with an urgency that's missing from many other 70s sides – and titles include "Solitude", "Valerie", "Dans Le Regard D'Alain Delon", "Paris Cinq Heures Du Matin", and "Tout Est Tranquille". Early live material from British tenor giant Ronnie Scott – sides not recorded at his own famous club, but by the BBC for broadcast – which maybe makes them some of Scott's first recordings of this nature, and certainly some of the best from the time! The first large chunk of material features Ronnie heading up an octet – not only blowing freely, in some of his best bop modes of the time – but also really showing off his talent as an arranger – in front of musicians who include Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet, Derek Humble on alto, Benny Green on baritone sax, and Victor Feldman on vibes, piano, and congas! Some of Archie Shepp's most freewheeling material of the 60s – a long, extended, single-song album recorded at the Donaueschingen festival a few years before his classic work for BYG/Actuel – and very much in the same bold spirit as his recordings for that label! The single tune – "One For The Trane" – is opened up, stretched out, and run freely by Shepp on tenor, Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombones, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – a very unique lineup that benefits not just from the presence of two trombones, which gives the record a very deep, rich sound – but also from the creative rhythms of Garrison and Harris, a really great team for a session like this! Shepp is wonderful – still with this inherent sense of soul that also ties the performance to some of his brightest moments for Impulse Records – this structure, even when blowing free, that creates an amazing sense of swing somewhere back in the music. There's nothing wooden about this music at all – as the album's one of the loosest, freest, liveliest sessions to ever come from the legendary trumpeter Tomasz Stanko – a performance that was originally done for Radio Bremen in 1972, and which is very different than most of his other albums from the time! The music here is all freely improvised, with a vibe that's at the headiest of the FMP generation – as Stanko's trumpet interacts with the tenor and flute of Janusz Muniak, bass of Bronislaw Suchanek, violin of Zbigniew Seifert, and drums of Janusz Stefanski – all players who are completely unbridled all the way through! If you only know Seifert from his mellower albums later in the 70s, he'll blow you away here – as, like a few other key musicians at the time, he's got a way of improvising on his instrument that matches the energy of a reedman – and which really adds a lot to the group. Nothing "country" about this record – as Japanese guitarist Kiyoshi Sugimoto keeps things very hip and contemporary – working in a freely fluid style that also has a few funky touches as well! The group on the set is a quartet – with Kiyoshi's guitar amidst piano, bass, and drums – the last of which are played by Motohiko Hino with a nice little snap that brings a groove to the record, even when the tunes are long and open-ended. Sugimoto's got a richly chromatic way of playing the guitar that's really great – a sound that would have been very much at home on a Gary Burton album from the late 60s, but which comes across even better here in the wonderfully creative style of the session. A real standout in the classic catalog of ECM – not only because the record's got a slightly different inspiration than most, but also because it seems to unlock some especially beautiful moments from players who could sound different in other settings on the label! As the title indicates, the tunes here all take inspiration from the poetry of Robert Creeley – but never in a mode that's got the usual jazz meets poetry approach – as Sheila Jordan sings the lyrics when they appear, with a sense of her own power that's very different than a more standard recitation – and which, to us, really feels a lot like her great vocal performances with Steve Kuhn for ECM. Kuhn is also in the group on piano, and other musicians include David Liebman on saxes, Lyle Mays on keyboards, and Bob Moses on drums – all working under the superb leadership of bassist Steve Swallow – who really outdid himself with the depth of feeling in this project. The title's a wonderfully poetic one, and the music is too – very open improvisations between Sabu Toyozumi on drums and Yuji Takahashi on piano – along with plenty of percussion from both musicians too! There's a very spacious approach to the music – lots of thoughtful interaction between both players, as they find sonic resonance that never overwhelms at all, yet which is still freely spontaneous – beautifully organic in approach, and stretched out on two long tracks that make up the album – "Lovely Silver 6000 KM" and "Shoulder Blade & Hip Joint". Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp – two key modern figures of the 60s, working here together in a seminal session recorded at the start of the decade! The album's approach is definitely dictated by Taylor – as the tunes have a piano-driven quality that's quite different than most music Shepp would later record – although Archie still manages to get in plenty of great moments on tenor! You can really hear Cecil breaking out of his earlier sound on the record – stretching forth in some of the more freely expressive ways that would dominate later, yet never too free – almost with a hint of modern swing at some points. Other players include Buell Niedlinger on bass and either Sunny Murray or Dennis Charles on drums – and titles include "Air", "Eb", and "Port Of Call". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice little set from Henry Threadgill – one of the albums that gave him greatest exposure to a bigger audience, and a set that pushes the sound of his work nicely! The record's got some of those touches from a time when the AACM was reaching out with its sound from earlier years – a mode that's not exactly more inside, but certainly more overtly expressive about its intentions, and sometimes a bit more melodically focused than freely improvisatory. There's echoes here of work the Art Ensemble and Amina Claudine Myers were doing during the same stretch – and the lack of commercial success of the record shouldn't indicate any aesthetic failure at all. Asha Puthli makes a surprising vocal appearance on the track "My Rock", and other players include Frank Lacy, Diedre Murray, Fred Hopkins, Pheeroan Aklaff, and Reggie Nicholson. Never-heard music from from French free jazz legend Francois Tusques – sounds that grew out of a 1968 "happening" experiment he was doing on the Parisian scene – but which then took stronger force as the American avant garde descended on the city during the BYG/Actuel generation! The tapes were recorded at a few different events at the end of the 60s – and have this loose structure in which a large ensemble improvise freely along a musical idea, then really take off into flights of their own – in a way, maybe an early example of the improvising orchestra at work. Players include Noel McGhie, Barre Phillips, Aldo Romano, Alan Silva, Claude Delcloo, Earl Freeman, and others – and titles include "Le Fumet Du Jubjub", "La Voute D'Un Caveau Ou D'Un Charnier", and "Tout Le Pouvoir Au Peuple". A stunning second set of solo piano work from Francois Tusques – in a setting that we like even more than some of his more bombastic group material! Here, Tusques is almost a completely different player – freely improvising, but at a very sensitive level too – in a way that's maybe a bit like Jaki Byard's solo material, but more avant – as Tusques also has a way of unlocking these cool sounds on the piano at times – almost making us wonder if he's playing inside the box, or using items to prepare some of the keys as well! The song titles are as political as the cover – even if the instrumental music is not – and tunes include "Georges Jackson Assassine Par Les Pigs", "Attica 71", and "Seize The Time". A wonderful album from the great Cedar Walton trio that featured Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – a really beautiful group of musicians who completely transformed the sound of the piano trio in the 70s! The group played together often in the 70s, and they've never sounded better than on an album like this – freely soulful and dancing, with Walton in firm command of his talents – sometimes coming on with the strength of his early 60s material, but always opening up with a more exploratory vibe too. Walton worked often in this mode for the decades that followed this set – but this Japanese album is almost the start of that great legacy, and still one of the best from this group! A late 70s pressing of some classic Verve sides from the 50s, featuring two masters of the tenor, blowing side by side in a couple of small group settings: one with rhythm backing by Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Alvin Stoller and the other with Jimmy Jones, Les Spann, Ray Brown and Jo Jones, plus Roy Eldridge and Budd Johnson in the frontline. The best tracks have lots of room – plenty of space so that the tenors aren't butting heads with each other in too close of quarters, with space to express themselves freely. A great example of the keyboard talent that made Gerald Wiggins one of the most striking players on the LA scene of the 50s! Wiggins had a really fresh approach to the piano at the time – a style that was partly bluesy, but which also had the lighter flourishes of some of the more popular pianists of his generation – dipping down into blue notes one moment, then flying freely over the top of the keys the next. The style was never overly dramatic, and it's also got traces of some of the later soul jazz sounds that would emerge from the west coast as the 60s approached. Shoutin is right – as the album's a wailer all the way through, one of the few jazz albums cut by Texas tenor giant Don Wilkerson – best known to crowds at the time for his work with the Ray Charles group, but really stepping out here in a different way for Blue Note! The album has Don blowing in a freely gutsy style – working with a crack soul jazz quartet that includes Grant Green on guitar, John Patton on organ, and Ben Dixon on drums – all key players that help Wilkerson get past any of the hoke of the Ray Charles sound, and into a groove that's made the record a standout Blue Note classic for years! Ahhh . . . Gerald Wilson at the height of his powers – recording here in a mode that could never miss! The group's a jazz orchestra, but it's filled with some of the hippest cats on the west coast in the 60s – soulful soloists who include Anthony Ortega on flute and alto, Curtis Amy on soprano sax, Phil Moore on piano, Teddy Edwards on tenor, Victor Feldman on vibes, and Dennis Budimir on guitar – all grooving in tight formation that still allow plenty of space for solos on each tune – even when the group is vamping, romping, and hitting an all-out swinging 60s soul jazz groove! Includes versions of "Freddy Freeloader", "Watermelon Man", "Yeh Yeh", and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" – and other titles include "Well Son Shuffle", "Do Anything You Wanna", "When I'm Feeling Kinda Blue", and "One On The House". Tremendous interplay on saxes from this ultra-hip combo – a legendary lineup that features David Murray, Oliver Lake, Hamiet Bluiett, and Julius Hemphill – all blowing hard on a variety of saxes! The sound here is possibly a bit more free at times than some of the quartet's other 80s albums – less trying to come up with a straighter jazz groove from a batch of horns, and instead more willing to let all the players soar out and express themselves freely. Many tracks definitely still have a sense of structure, but there's also a bit of a different feel here that we really like. One of the earliest albums ever from Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita – and a set that already has him completely on fire, and well into the legacy of music that would continue for years to come! Yamashita is incredible here – almost a Japanese answer to the freedoms of Cecil Taylor, but born of more Monkish origins – as Yosuke throws out these blistering waves of angular lines on the piano – improvising freely, but never losing his sense of direction – and pausing a bit at the start of the second half of the record to allow slight introspection, before then opening up again in freedom! The group features equally on-fire drum work from Takeo Moriyama, plus soprano sax from Seiichi Nakamura – on two long improvised tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzy 45s galore – and a huge dip into the vaults of Prestige Records! This tasty set brings together 18 classics recorded in the heyday of the jazz funk years at Prestige – the late 60s and early 70s, a time when the soul jazz sounds of previous years were being forged into a leaner, meaner, harder-hitting groove. And although the LP was the growing format during these days, there was actually a heck of a lot of great work issued on 45s – still spinning strong with the jukebox crowds in the clubs and tap rooms, and still getting major play on radio stations, where the single was still king. The set features many 45 mixes of funky classics that you might know from LPs – and intersperses them with some other more obscure numbers pulled from full albums – making for an all-solid, all-funky set of tracks from one of the hippest jazz labels ever!
