✨✧ Roy BrooksUnderstanding ... CD
Reel To Reel, 1970. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing unissued live set from drummer Roy Brooks – done at that moment when he was hitting the 70s with some very righteous energy, of the sort that only saw brief exposure on albums like The Free Slave, or some of Roy's own self-released titles! This album is a much-needed addition to that tiny catalog of spiritual avant gems – and it may well be the best of the bunch, as the live setting allows for long tracks that pack a hell of a punch all the way through – not just from Roy's work on drums, but also from this amazing quintet that includes Woody Shaw on trumpet, Carlos Garnett on tenor, Harold Mabern on piano, and Cecil McBee on bass! All players are at the height of their powers – often playing with even more edge than you might expect – and the album's as much a tribute to the genius of Shaw, Garnett, and Mabern as it is to the visionary leadership of Brooks. Titles include "Understanding", "Zoltan", "Taurus Woman", "The Theme", "Billie's Bounce", and "Prelude To Understanding" – all very long. CD

Harold LandWestward Bound ... CD
Reel To Reel, Early 60s. Used ... $12.99
A fantastic addition to the too-small catalog of work from the wonderful Harold Land – the west coast tenorist whose sound was maybe more of a bridge to the New York scene in the 50s and 60s – as you'll hear in this collection of well-recorded and unreleased material from his key years on the scene! All the cuts were recorded in Seattle, not LA – and Land is in top formation throughout – working in a few different groups with excellent players – including the mighty trumpeter Carmell Jones on two of the album's tracks, maybe worth the price of the record alone – plus Hampton Hawes and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Monk Montgomery on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Titles include "Triplin The Groove", "Vendetta", "Beepdurple", "Beauty", "Blue N Boogie", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Happily Dancing/Deep Harmonies Falling". CD

✨✧ Bob Mover & Walter Davis JrSalerno Concert ... CD
Reel To Real, Late 1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great duo set – alto from Bob Mover and piano from Walter Davis Jr – playing together here in a relaxed live setting that really has both players at the top of their game! Mover is an especially great surprise – and blows here with this openly flowing sense of imagination that's mindblowing – a raspy edge on the alto that hearkens back to some of the players who inspired him, but with this very personal quality that's at a level that was only captured on a rare few of his other albums. Davis is the piano giant you'd expect – with that masterful sense of tone and timing that resonated especially well on some of his overseas dates of the 70s – and the recording quality has this nice sense of room that only further underscores the intimacy of the two players working together, and which seems to do especially nice things for Mover's horn. Titles include long creative takes on "Star Eyes", "Bird Feathers", "A Nightingale Sang In Barkley Square", "Donna Lee", "Nica's Tempo", and "All The Things You Are/Prince Albert". CD

Chicago Experiment (Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, & Others)Chicago Experiment ... CD
Ropeadope, 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Chicago finally gets its due – in this great series that previously gave us the Philadelphia Experiment and Detroit Experiment projects! This time around, though, the lineup is even more top-shelf – filled with the kind of artists who really make us proud to be part of the Windy City – many of them players with slightly different styles and approaches, which is what makes the record such a great break from the usual! Pianist Greg Spero heads up the group, and the septet features work from Makaya McCraven on drums, Jeff Parker on guitar, Joel Ross on vibes, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Darryl Jones on bass, and Irvin Pierce on tenor – working together with a style that's nicely unified, and which has some of the soulful currents of other projects in this series from Ropeadope. That mode is maybe a bit different than you're used to hearing from McCraven, is a perfect showcase for the more soulful side of Parker's talents, and is right on the money for Marquis Hill – on tunes that include "The Chant", "Sizzle Reel", "Cloud Jam", "Always Be", "Double Take", "Maxwell Street", "For Too", "Straight Shooter", and "Tiny Beat". ✨✧ Miles DavisFreedom Jazz Dance – The Bootleg Series Vol 5 (3LP set) ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Near Mint- 3LP Trifold ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest entries so far in this excellent series of rare material from legendary trumpeter Miles Davis – a set that brings together unheard studio sessions from the years 1966 to 1968 – some tracks from the recordings that gave the world the Miles Smiles, Nefertiti, and Water Babies albums! The group here is that legendary lineup that includes Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – a group who, by this point, was quite comfortable with both each other, and the new ideas that Miles was bringing to his music – very ready to step out with the rich sense of imagination they brought to music like this. There's definitely a new current of darkness here – that brooding quality that Davis had on some of his pre-electric dates – and it's wonderful to hear his ideas develop over a few performances of some tunes, and also through some of the studio chatter too. Titles include a long session reel performance of "Freedom Jazz Dance", three versions of "Circle", session reel takes of "Dolores", "Orbits", "Footprints", "Gingerbread Boy", "Nefertiti", "Fall", and "Water Babies" – plus the tracks "Play Your Eight (Miles speaks)", "Blues In F", "Country Son (rhythm section rehearsal)", and "Masqualero (alt take – take 3)". ✨✧ Edition ReduxBetter A Rook Than A Pawn ... CD
Audiographic, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really different album than usual from reedman Ken Vandermark – a set that gets at his deep love of many styles of music, which he wraps together here with his groundbreaking Edition Redux ensemble! There's still plenty of improvisation in the mix, but the way things come across is very different than more familiar Vandermark material – which is what you might guess in a set of tracks dedicated to a range of influences who include King Tubby, Bettye Lavette, and Robert Bresson! The lineup features work from Erez Dressel on piano and electronics, Beth McDonald on tuba and electronics, and Lilly Finnegan on drums – the last of whom holds a role that's strongly rhythmic at points, and echoed by the tuba used as a bass. Titles include "Time Is The Tune/Wols/Uncommon Object", "No Back To Your Jacket/Reel To Reel/Flatlands", and "Double Negative/Still Bresson/Aperto". CD

✨✧ GF Fitz-Gerald & Lol CoxhillPoppy Seed Affair (2CD & DVD set) ... CD
Reel Recordings (Canada), 2011. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A three disc set centered around the talents of electric guitar sound expander GF Fitzgerald and avant soprano sax player Lol Coxhill – 2CDs and a DVD – none of which are easy to classify and are each brilliant in their own way! The DVD is The Matchbox Purveyors: The Poppy Seed Affair – an obscure 1981 film with Ian Hinchcliffe, Mark Long, Dawn Archibald, Fitzgerald, Coxhill and others – with a Lol Coxhill soundtrack featuring Lol on soprano and tenor sax, voice and electronics plus Archie Leggett on bass and the great Robert Wyatt on drums and "chicken clucks". Disc 2 is an intimate live concert with Fitz-Gerald and Coxhill from October of 1981. 6 untitled tracks. Disc 3 is a cool mix of sound collage and solo improvisations from the mid 70s! CD

✨✧ Sun RaLost Reel Collection Vol 1 – Creator Of The Universe ... CD
Transparency, 1971. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Lost work from Sun Ra – pulled from two different tapes recorded in the Bay Area in 1971! Disc one features an obscure performance – even by Ra standards – done at the Warehouse in San Francisco, with a group of unlisted players, all of whom really hit some of the farthest-reaching Arkestra modes of the time. The sound is often quite free, and relatively out – but a few sparer tracks feature great instrumental pairings that include percussion and trombone, and percussion with moog from Ra! Titles include "Discipline", "Enlightenment", "Satellites Are Spinning", and 3 more unidentified tracks. Disc two is quite different, but equally compelling – as it features Sun Ra speaking before a class at UC Berkeley, spinning out his thoughts in a relatively freewheeling manner! The lecture covers a number of themes similar to his writings of the time – quite political at moments, and always pretty compelling. CD

✨✧ Sonny RollinsReel Life (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Milestone/Victor (Japan), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked Sonny Rollins set from the early 80s – one that has him recording with a fair bit of guitar, but still staying very much in his best form as an improviser! The group here features both Bobby Broom on electric guitar, and Yoshiaki Masuo on acoustic and electric – both players who get in plenty of sound during the set, but always as a follow-up to Rollins' bold tenor voice in the lead. Remaining group members include Bob Cranshaw on electric bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and although the electric strings might normally make for a smooth sort of record, Sonny's sharper sound still brings plenty of edge – even when the rhythms of a few tunes get a bit bright. Titles include "My Little Brown Book", "Reel Life", "McGhee", "Rosita's Best Friend", and "Best Wishes". CD

EM (Japan), 1970s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of spiritual jazz from saxophonist Idris Ackamoor – featuring his famous 70s recordings with The Pyramids, solo material, and even some previously unissued titles! The bulk of the collection comes from The Pyramids' albums Birth Speed Merging, Lalibela, and King Of Kings – all freely creative records that build upon traditions initiated by the AACM in Chicago, and taken further groups like The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Human Arts Ensemble, or Oneness Of Juju. Many tracks build freely from earthy percussion, bits of vocals, and spiraling solos on saxes and flute – with a sound that's incredibly soulful and righteous – very positive and progressive, and easily some of the best work of this nature from the time! 2CD set features Pyramids tracks "The Land Of Eternal Song (part 3)", "Mohgo Naba", "Queen Of The Spirits (part 3)", "Black Man Of The Nile", "Aomawa", "The River Ganges", and "Masenko Nights" – plus "Spiritual Rebirth", "Centurian", "Topanga", "Cubana", and "Africa" by Idris Ackamoor; as well as "The Shepherd's Tune" by The Collective. One of the best albums ever by this legendary Chicago trio – a great example of the way that records on the Nessa label can really get to the heart of artists' intentions! The trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion have never sounded better – and have this intimate, soulful interplay that's sometimes missing from other efforts – that special kind of energy that makes the AACM so great when it's really clicking this well – as deeply spiritual as it is freely expressive! Threadgill plays alto, tenor, bass flute, and the compelling hubkaphone – and titles include "I'll Be Right Here Waiting", "No 2", "GvE", "Subtraction", and "Keep Right On Playing Thru The Mirror Over The Water". ✨✧ Eric AlexanderSummit Meeting ... CD
Milestone, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
This tenor giant gets better and better with each new album! Eric Alexander is one of our favorite new jazz artists of the past decade – still a relatively young player, but with a sound that's incredible, steeped in years of tradition, yet freely creative in his own unique way. His tenor solos on this set stand up to some of our favorite older work by players like Clifford Jordan or Sonny Rollins, and if anything, the backing may be some of the best he's ever received on record. Alexander's playing here with longtime friend and musical partner Harold Mabern – who's as sympathetic to Alexander's sound as he once was to that of Frank Strozier – and the other players in the group include trumpeter Nicholas Payton, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth. Titles include "Andre's Turn", "After The Rain", "This Girl's In Love With You", "A House Is Not A Home", and "Summit Meeting". CD

✨✧ Eric AlexanderSunday In New York ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pure brilliance from tenor giant Eric Alexander – one of the few modern players we'd put on a par with our favorites from older years! Alexander's got a depth of tone and sense of poise that's simply wonderful on the set – one that's never staid, but which continues to grow beautifully over the years – using the tenor sax in a sense of freely creative expression at a level that matches that of Hank Mobley, Tubby Hayes, or Sonny Rollins back in the 60s. The group on this set features John Hicks on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and Hicks' piano is especially nice, and opens up Alexander's sound with a sensitivity that matches his best recordings with Harold Mabern. Titles include "Sunday In New York", "Watch What Happens", "Avotcja", "Alone Together", "Dearly Beloved", and "My Girl Is Just Enough Woman For Me". CD

✨✧ AmalgamPrayer For Peace ... LP
Transatlantic/Trading Places (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark set from the freer side of the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s – a relatively open-ended session cut by alto saxophonist Trevor Watts with his Amalgam trio – a great group that features John Stevens on drums and Jeff Clyne on bass (although Barry Guy also sits in on bass for one of the tunes!) The sound here is somewhere between the original trio formation of the ESP groups of the mid 60s and the more freely expressive groups of the FMP years – but is also touched with a good deal of that sense of sadness and depth of emotion that colored some of the best modern British jazz sessions of the period. Watt's work on alto is incredible throughout – dominating the record more than most players we could imagine on the instrument in such a setting – and titles include "Tales Of Sadness", "Judy's Smile I", "Judy's Smile II", and "Prayer For Peace". ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of Chicago with Don PullenLive At The Frankfurt Jazz Festival – June 1 1991 ... CD
AEOC, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare meeting of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the late pianist Don Pullen – recorded at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in 1991, and easily one of the group's greatest sessions from this period! There's a freely creative spirit here that reminds us a lot of the Art Ensemble's best European performances of years back – especially on the 20 minute opening reading of "People In Sorrow", which has an ethereal sound built up from percussion, in a way that's almost more haunting than the original. Pullen's piano takes on a bit more presence on the tracks "Song For Atala" and "Fundamental Destiny" – both of which show the skill for more tightly arranged horn parts that the Ensemble picked up during the 80s – but still delivered here with enough loose, spontaneous energy to stand apart from some of their studio work of the decade. Pullen delivers a strong pulse on the latter track especially – and continues into a straighter, soaring jazz groove on "Odwalla/The Theme", which closes the set. Lester Bowie plays trumpet, Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell are on woodwinds and percussion, Malachi Favors on bass, Don Moye on Sun percussion, and Don Pullen on piano. CD

A really unusual assortment of players – coming together here in a way that makes for an equally unusual sort of sound! The meeting of Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark and European players is hardly anything new – and drummer Paal Nilssen Love here is a frequent musical partner – but there's some really special sounds coming from both the trombone of Johannes Bauer and the electronics of Thomas Lehn – the last of whom improvises freely, and makes this bristling sort of energy next to the acoustic instruments in the group! The sounds within move between music that has the feel of more familiar free improvisation, and tunes that almost have an electro-acoustic sort of heft – and the album features one long performance, divided up into three parts. ✨✧ Georgie AuldTenor Sax Gone Latin (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Capitol (Japan), Late 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very cool little record – possibly the best cut by tenor player Georgie Auld, and a gimmicky session that actually works wonderfully! Georgie's blowing in the lead on tenor – and he's got Latin backings by the Jud Conlin Rhythmaires, who also sing along on the tracks in a male/female harmony style. The approach is a bit cheesy, but it works nicely in our book – setting up a strongly melodic presentation of the tracks with the voices, so that Georgie can blow freely in whatever direction he wants. Titles include "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Take Me In Your Arms", "Give Me Something To Remember You By", "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", and "Take Me". CD

ESP/ZYX (Germany), 1964/1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A double-length set that brings together 2 key early live sets by Albert Ayler – both recorded on the New York scene of the mid 60s! Bells was an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the shortness of the album! The single track "Bells" was performed at Town Hall by Ayler with a group that includes Donald Ayler on trumpet, Charles Tyler on alto sax, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Sunny Murray on percussion – all coming together in a raw, real sense of freedom – beautifully explored here without ever getting too overindulgent. The tune may well be one of the greatest illustrations of the ESP format at its best – as Ayler and company never stray too far, but carve out some incredibly imaginative space through their starkly-blown horn solos! Prophecy is longer – a full album that was recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after Ayler's untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". CD

Hat Art (Switzerland), 1962/1967. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Three very rare slices of work from the great Albert Ayler – all of them pretty darn mindblowing! The set begins with Ayler's appearance at the 1967 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that must have been a shock to audience members who'd seen some of the more staid work at the event – as Ayler really lets loose on alto, tenor, and soprano sax – working with a very freely improvising quartet that includes Michel Samson on violin, Bill Folwell on bass, and Milford Graves on drums – really going to town on the titles "Japan/Universal Indians", "Our Prayer", and "Truth Is Marching In/Omega". Next is a single track that was recorded at the funeral of John Coltrane – a spiritual blend of "Love Cry/Truth Is Marching In/Our Prayer" – blown by Ayler on tenor, with Don Ayler on trumpet, Richard Davis on bass, and Milford Graves on drums. The last track is the earliest on the set – and very early for recorded Albert Ayler as well – a captivating performance recorded in Copenhagen in 1962 – as Ayler's tenor joins the work of the Cecil Taylor trio – with Taylor on piano, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Sunny Murray on drums – as the group soar on a 21 minute reading of "Four". A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. Fantastic French material from Chet Baker – one of his legendary albums recorded for the Barclay label in Paris – and a set that's noteworthy for also featuring work from modern jazz pianist Richard (Dick) Twardzik – who passed away shortly after the sessions! The pairing of Baker and Twardzik is one of the best of Chet's 50s years – and the group here is rounded out by the excellent Jimmy Bond on bass, and Peter Littman on drums. There's a nice bite to the set – a bit more than some of Baker's west coast material from the year or two before – and there's also an undercurrent of some of the soul that would emerge in his solos in coming years. Titles include "Rondette", "Piece Caprice", "Sad Walk", "Mid Forte", "The Girl From Greeland", "Just Duo", and "Pomp" LP, Vinyl record album

There's plenty of full-on frenzy here – with Albert Berger blowing tenor next to the bass clarinet of Ziv Taubenfeld, both players who really seem to drive each other to new heights over the long live tracks recorded on the set! The tone of the clarinet often creates a woodier, earthier one next to the tenor – and although freely improvised, the music often has a nice sense of pulse and inherently rhythmic vibe – thanks to work from Shay Hazan on bass and guimbri, and the great Hamid Drake on drums. Titles include "The Steamer", "Astral Visit", "Into The Horizon", and "A Question Of Universality". CD

There's a bit of reverie here, but it's usually the swinging kind instead of the sleepy variety – thanks to a well-formed groove from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! The tunes certainly include a few ballads, but Richie usually takes them with a freely fresh sound that gets past any obvious standard-heavy cliches – inspired, no doubt, by the inventive changes of Mraz and Hart, who seem to spur him on strongly, especially on the more upbeat tracks. Obscure batch of soul jazz guitar tracks, cut for Ray Charles' Tangerine label in the late 60's. The tracks are relatively long, with guitar solos by Bishop, and some nice organ playing by Newell Burton – a player who we know nothing about, but who has a nice clean tone on the organ, which is a good mix with Bishop's style of playing. Tremendous live work from drummer Art Blakey and one of his hippest versions of the Jazz Messengers – the famous lineup that included Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all working at the height of their youthful power! The group cut plenty of excellent studio work for Blue Note, but this set's a great illustration of why their live performances are so essential – as the individuals are all such masterful soloists that they really do plenty with the open space of the tunes! Jymie Merritt completes the group on bass, the set was recorded by Tokyo Radio for broadcast – and titles include "Nely Bly", "Dat Dere", "Round Midnight", "Moanin", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "The Summit", "The Breeze & I", and "Blues March". Blue Note, 1958/1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pounding! This is the long-awaited re-release of a lost session that Blakey recorded in 1958, with a triple-drum rhythm group that included himself, Philly Joe Jones, and Roy Haynes – plus some additional conga work by Ray Barretto. Unlike other Blakey "drum orgy" sessions, though, this one's got a much straighter jazz feel – with plenty of solo space for trumpeter Lee Morgan and pianist Bobby Timmons. The drums work together in fantastic interplay – with Haynes' lyricism, Blakey's crackle, and Jones' raw power all providing perfect complement to each other while Morgan solos freely out front as the only horn (a role that he rarely ever got to take!) The set also includes 2 amazing other tracks that feature only bass and drum (not drum n bass!) interplay between Blakey and the late Paul Chambers – making for a total of 8 incredible tracks in all, with titles that include "Lee's Tune", "Blakey's Blues", "Lover", and "Drums In the Rain". Great stuff, and with notes by Kenny Washington, too! CD

✨✧ Paul BleyPaul Bley With Gary Peacock ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1963/1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A 70s ECM album from Paul Bley, but one that features work from much earlier years – one session recorded in 1963, the other from 1968 – both done with Gary Peacock on bass, and either Billy Elgart or Paul Motian on drums! These early sides from Bley are quite interesting examples of his growth – because at times, they still echo some of the more conventional changes and rhythms of other jazz pianists – but also point the way towards a much more freely melodic use of the keyboard. Only one track here is a familiar standard – Jerome Kern's "Long Ago & Far Away" – and others are originals by Bley, Annette Peacock, and Ornette Coleman – with titles that include "Blues", "Getting Started", "When Will The Blues Leave", "Gary", "Moor", and "Big Foot". Prime modern work from the great Paul Bley – a pianist who was really expanding his sound at this time – to a level that would soon make him a legend around the globe! The European date is a great chance to hear Bley really opening things up – playing freely, with an amazing command of the keyboard – faster flurries of notes at times than you might hear on his 70s material, but with an equally sensitive ear for space and sound – all balanced by perfect work from Kent Carter on bass and Barry Altschul on drums! There's an instantly haunting quality to the music – which is all unique original material from Bley's scene – titles that include his own compositions Bley's "Pablo" and "Mazatlan", plus Annette Peacock's "Both" and "Cartoon", and Carla Bley's "Start". CD also features the bonus track "Closer" – another Carla Bley composition. CD

Soul What, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
A trio that really lives up to its name – given that the lineup features three of the most dynamic figures in free jazz over the past few decades! The set was recorded in Chicago, and has a sound that really lives up to that city's embrace of a power trio like this – with completely frenetic work on reeds by Mars Williams, next to tumultuous drums from Paal Nilssen-Love, and some boldly propulsive bass from Kent Kessler – all spun out here over the course of three very long, freely-improvised tracks! Williams plays a few toy instruments, and Nilssen-Love handles some percussion too – both of which make for some slightly more introspective passages, which are soon balanced by more dynamic energy. "Expanse" is a mighty big name for the group that David Boykin uses on this record – especially given that the combo's only a quintet – but that's ok with us, because the sound here is more than large enough to warrant the name! Boykin's working with a great batch of players from the Chicago scene here – including frequent musical partner Nicole Mitchell on flute, sliding wonderfully alongside David's saxophones – plus Jim Baker on piano, Josh Abrams on bass, and Mike Reed on drums. The album features two longish tracks, both composed by Boykin with a vision that's freely expressive, yet never too free – a perfect balance that reigns things in wonderfully, and which shows him to be one of the key current heirs to a Chicago tradition that runs back to the early AACM and Sun Ra! ✨✧ Anthony BraxtonFor Alto ... CD
Delmark, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first solo saxophone recordings of the 60s – recorded as one of the first few sessions by a young Anthony Braxton! As the title implies, the whole album features alto sax – played freely by Braxton with a depth of creativity and sense of humanity to rival any of the previous greatness of his generation from bigger names on labels like Impulse or ESP. There's a great sense of restraint here too – not one that has Braxton on the inside of the jazz spectrum, but which keeps him focused, and never to overly-indulgent in this new sort of setting. The sounds from his alto are clearly revolutionary – even from the perspective of many decades later – and we honestly think this record still beats most of the albums of this type that have come out in the years since it was first recorded! Tunes are all dedicated to Braxton's friends and heroes, in sort of a who's-who of the avant garde – and ttles include "To Composer John Cage", "To Leroy Jenkins", "To Murray De Pillars", and "To Pianist Cecil Taylor". A 10th Anniversary performance by the Chicago Tentet – a wonderful group that's become the fruitful union of saxophonist Peter Brotzmann with a younger generation of players who were working heavily on the Chicago scene at the time! Back when the group first started, it was something of an experiment – but over the following decade, the ensemble won great attention for their playing, and for good reason too – considering the solo contributions of players like Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson on reeds, Joe McPhee on trumpet and tenor, Johannes Bauer on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums – all working under the visionary leadership of Peter Brotzmann! The tracks are all somewhat long and open-ended – almost more spacious than on other Chicago Tentet records, with a freely improvised feel. Stunning duets from these key improvisers – a set recorded in Paris, and done with a stripped-down and freely playful vibe that's very much like some of the best AACM material of the time! Wadada Leo Smith blows trumpet, Marion Brown is on alto – and both players bring percussion into the mix too – as they shift between shorter and longer improvisations, all handled with that special ear for sonic textures that makes them such subtle giants in their field! Alto saxophonist Rob Brown really shines in a setting like this – a record with a very open-ended vibe, as Brown improvises freely in tandem with Juan Pablo Carletti on the drums – spinning things out over two very long tracks that are full of delightful surprises at every twist and turn! Brown has a really great way of handling his horn – blowing freely, but almost with an inherent sense of structure – not playing changes, or hitting a rhythm, but creating these patterns that really hold the whole thing together – still the farther side of tuneful, but almost there at times. ✨✧ Donald Byrd QuartetAu Chat Qui Peche 1958 – Featuring Bobby Jaspar ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant early live work from Donald Byrd – recorded in a loose style that shows a whole different side of his talents than his studio sessions from the time! If we'd have one complaint about some of Byrd's late 50s work in the US, it's that it's sometimes too tight – and lacks the lyricism and light play of his 60s recordings. That feature is really corrected here, as the tracks on the set are long and laidback – done in an easily-flowing mode that really reflects the freedoms offered to a player like Byrd on the Parisian scene. The core group on the set features Walter Davis on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – augmented by a few guest appearances from Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute. Byrd's horn has a quality that's quite different here – darker, yet also with a beautiful sense of hope – and the group freely explores some beautiful changes on tunes that include "All The Things You Are", "Off Minor", "Down", "Parisian Thoroughfare", and "All This Time". (We will be honest in saying that the way the set was recorded, the piano of Walter Davis is much higher in the mix than the trumpet of Donald Byrd – but perhaps that is also the charm of the recording, and it only emphasizes the different quality in Donald's horn on the set.) Here's a summer house we'd really like to visit on our next vacation – a legendary spot in Sweden, where Don Cherry created freely with some of the hippest players on the local scene in 1968! The tracks here were all recorded for later commercial release, which never ended up happening – and they represent a key bridge in Cherry's career between his important American work of the mid 60s, and his growing global consciousness to come – maybe a first chapter in the sound that would become the Organic Music Society! The set features one 46 minute improvisation on CD1, and more session material on CD2 – with an array of musicians that includes Cherry on pocket trumpet and flute, Bernt Rosengren on tenor and flute, Gunnar Lindqvist on reeds, Tommy Koverhult on tenor and a variety of flutes, Jacques Thollot and Leif Wennerstrom on drums, Torbjorn Hultcrantz and Kent Carter on bass, and percussion from Bulent Ates – plus other members of the group! Some of our favorite work on the legendary Black Saint/Soul Note label – a wonderful set of recordings that really allowed percussionist Andrew Cyrille a chance to express himself freely! Cyrille had been making music on record for almost two decades before he reached this stretch in his careery – but with these albums he really gets a chance to present his music at the height of its expression – in a range of settings and groupings that really get at the wide range of Andrew's skills on drums and percussion. Highlights include a very spiritual session with the Manolo group – David S Ware on tenor and Ted Daniel on trumpet; a set of duets with altoist Jimmy Lyons, a partner of Cyrille in the Cecil Taylor group; a trio date with Jeanne Lee on vocals and Lyons on alto; a trio tribute to Art Blakey; and another recording with Daniel and pianist Sonelius Smith. This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, and all those playings, the record manages to still sound fantastic – a truly inspirational piece of music that's long deserved all the attention it gets! The legendary group on the album includes John Coltrane on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Bill Evans on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass – working with Miles in a relatively modal style, with brilliant rhythm changes and a wonderful sense of space. The whole thing's sublime – and titles include "Blue In Green", "All Blues", "So What", and "Freddie Freeloader". CD

A really great bit of live work from Miles Davis – and the first-ever recorded appearance of the quintet with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – even though the album was never issued in the US at the time! The set follows very strongly in the mode of the group's work at the Plugged Nickel – with a pace that's faster than usual, and bristling with freely exploratory energy. Titles include "Milestones", "So What", "Walkin", and a nicely stepped-up version of "Autumn Leaves". Shorter's solos are worth the price of the record alone, but Williams' work on the kit never ceases to amaze! CD features a bonus track – "Stella By Starlight"! CD

✨✧ Miles Davis & OthersEvolution Of The Groove EP ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1960s/1970s/2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Miles Davis gets remixed and funked up for the hip hop generation – with surprisingly tasteful, even welcome head-nodding results – with appearances by Nas on a rhyme, and Carlos Santana on guitar – plus trumpet by Nas's pops Olu Dara – and loads of fresh remix grooves! If you're like us, you generally recoil a little bit at the thought of modern revisions of our heroes' legacies, but this short & sweet set does a fine job of incorporating modern funky drum programming, Rhodes, percussion – with both electric and acoustic elements & percussion that work very well with Miles' seductive groove. A nice surprise! Titles include "Freddie Freeloader" (previously unreleased outtake), "Freedom Jazz Dance (Evolution Of The Groove)" (remix) featuring rhymes by Nas, "It's About That Time" (remix) featuring Carlos Santana, "Honky Tonk" (remix) and "Black Satin" (remix). ✨✧ Elton Dean's NinesenseHappy Daze/Oh For The Edge ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1976/1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from British reedman Elton Dean – two classic Ogun albums back to back on a single CD! First up is Happy Daze – a set that's got a lot more complicated class than you might expect from the title – really wonderful large ensemble arrangements penned by Dean, and definitely in the spirit that he claimed made the group the heir to Keith Tippett's previous group of the late 60s! The music here is all nicely inside, and pretty darn soulful – swinging and stepping with a bit more of a groove than some of the other Ogun Records work of the time – really back to that hip point at the end of the 60s, when British jazz groups stretched out in their spirit, but never got too avant in their style – a perfect blend that Dean really recreates here, with help from players who include Alan Skidmore on tenor, Harry Beckett on trumpet, Mark Charig on trumpet and tenor horn, Nick Evans and Radu Malfatti on trombones, Keith Tippett on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. Titles include "Nicrotto", "Seven For Lee", "Sweet FA", and "Three For All". On Oh For The Edge, there's definitely an edge to the music – but one that's a bit different than that of some of Elton Dean's contemporaries in the 70s British scene! Dean brings a lot more swing and soul to this record than you might expect – working with a large group, but never letting the players get totally outside – which is a real change from some of the more freely improvising UK ensembles of the period. Dean's own work on alto and saxello are totally great – as are the core rhythms of the group, which come from Keith Tippett on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. But we're also plenty happy to hear Alan Skidmore on tenor, Harry Beckett and Mark Charig on trumpets, and Nick Evans on trombone. The recording has a very good "roomy" sound to it that gives it a darker edge than some of the other Ogun recordings from the time – and tracks include "Fall In Free", "Dance", "Friday Night Blues", and "Prayer For Jesus". RCA/Bluebird, 1963. Used ... $1.99
That's "Take Ten", not "Take Five" – a great title cut that echoes Paul Desmond's previous work with Dave Brubeck – but which then gives way quickly to some sweet bossa-styled grooves done with guitar from Jim Hall! The album's one of the strongest of the Hall/Desmond collaborations for RCA – A sublime showcase not just for Paul's impeccable alto, but also for the amazing tones and chromes that fly freely from the strings of Jim's guitar! Both players are set up with just a bit of gentle backing – light percussion from Connie Kay, and a bit of bass from Gene Cherico or Gene Wright. The whole thing's a well-conceived study in economy, as the two players craft sly and subtle lines around spare drum and bass backings – slowly hanging sound in space to weave a rich web of sound that's as compelling as it seems to be effortless! Titles include "Take Ten", "El Prince", "Embarcadero", "Samba De Orfeu", "Theme From Black Orpheus", and "Alone Together". CD

Walt Dickerson with Sun RaImpressions Of A Patch Of Blue ... CD
MGM/Verve, 1965. Used ... $24.99
Excellent album recorded by vibist Walt Dickerson during the mid 60's. Ostensibly a "soundtrack session", Dickerson freely improvises on themes from the movie A Patch Of Blue, and turns the score into a great platform for moody jazz playing on vibes and piano. Even more surprising is the fact that Sun Ra is the pianist in the quartet, making a rare non-Arkestra appearance – and on a major label, too! Titles include "Bacon & Eggs", "Alone In The Park", "Selina's Fantasy", and "Thataway". CD

Jazz Door, 1961. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An especially rare live set from Eric Dolphy – recorded on an early trip to Sweden in 1961, and featuring some especially long tunes that really let him open up! Dolphy's working here with a local trio for backup – Rony Johansson on piano, Kurt Lindgren on bass, and Rune Carlsson on drums – but the real focus is on his long and freely creative solos on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. His tone has a very sharp edge – a sound that's never too far out, but which has all the fire of his best recordings for Prestige during this period – and it's especially wonderful to hear the way he transforms familiar numbers with this energy. Prestige, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Two classic Eric Dolphy albums – back to back in a single set! First up us Outward Bound – Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. Dolphy plays his usual mix of alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and the tracks include "245", "Miss Toni", "Les", and "GW". Out There is Eric Dolphy's second album as a leader – and already a bold step forward from the first! The format here changes from the more standard lineup of before – as Dolphy drops out other horn players, loses the piano, and brings the cello of Ron Carter into the frontline! Backing is by the bass of George Duvivier and the drums of Roy Haynes – and the mix of cello and bass creates the freely spirited sound that allows Dolphy to take off on even freer solo flights. The session has a very moody, very dark feel – especially on the tracks where Dolphy is playing B flat and bass clarinet – and titles include "The Baron", "Eclipse", "Sketch Of Melba", "Feathers", and "17 West". George DukeFaces In Reflection ... CD
MPS, 1974. Used ... $9.99
Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Titles include "Capricorn", "The Opening", "Psychosomatic Dung", "North Beach", "Faces In Reflection", "Maria Tres Filhos", and "Da Somba". CD

A strong quartet session from bassist Johnny Dyani – recorded with John Tchicai on sax, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Billy Hart on drums! The sound on the session is quite "outside" – letting Tchicai and Beckett plenty of room to solo freely – but there's also a soulful component at the bottom of the set, with warm rolling basslines that show that Dyani's still very much in charge of the session, and some great work on drums from Billy Hart. Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very interesting batch of tracks – one tune apiece by each of the artists named in the title, recorded between the years 1970 and 1973 at the Festival Ljublijana, in Yugoslavia. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxley on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time! What a great little record – and one that we hardly knew existed! The session's a late one for both Pepper and Farrell – but it's also a great one too – recorded in the freely blowing style of both players' best 70s work, with a group that includes George Cables on piano, John Dentz on drums, and Tony Dumas on bass. Only 3 tracks of the set feature Pepper – but they're all pretty darn great, and the interplay between the two saxophonists is really something wonderful, especially on the album's standout version of "Mode For Joe". 5 more tracks feature Farrell on his own with the group – but if you know Joe's work from the time, you know that he can really hold his own in such a setting – blowing with the kind of open imagination we loved on his Skateboard Park album. As with Zoller's own work from the time, there's a freewheeling approach here that slides effortlessly between melody and rhythm – in a way that often has the guitar and piano flying freely, while the bass from Dick Kniss and drums from Dick Berk take off into sound patterns and tunes of their own. The approach isn't totally out, nor totally free – but it's certainly more so than the usual album on Riverside from the time! Titles include "Israel", "Episodes", "Exploration", "Blizzard", and "Park Row". CD

✨✧ Ryo FukuiScenery ... LP
We Release Jazz (Switzerland), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You". Jimmy GiuffreFree Fall (plus unreleased tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1963. Used ... $12.99
An incredible batch of freely crafted tracks from Jimmy Giuffre's legendary early 60s trio! The group features Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Bley on piano, and the two young modernists were a perfect match of Giuffre's ever-developing ideas of freedom and harmony. The music is beautiful – with a sound that's like nothing else we can describe, and an approach that's free floating (or free falling), but never directionless, and never overindulgent. Perfectly measured, with a strong sense of melody and rhythm, even amidst the more outside moments. Titles include "Propulsion", "Threewe", "Dichotomy", "Man Alone", and "Divided Man" – plus 5 bonus cuts not issued on the original album! CD
(Out of print 1998 pressing with 5 bonus tracks!)

✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreTrav'lin' Light ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most sublime Jimmy Giuffre albums of all time – and a perfect realization of his piano-less/bass-less trio style! The approach here is really revolutionary, especially for the time – as the group simply features Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Jim Hall on guitar, and Giuffre on reeds – working with no other rhythm at all, and coming up with this incredible approach to music that's as breathtaking as it is groundbreaking! Notes hang in mid-air, slowly sliding around one another, flying freely from the players, yet still managing to swing in a beautiful way. The titles are a mix of standards and originals – but all tracks sound completely unique, with a sound unlike anything else we can describe – and titles include "Swamp People", "Lonely Time", "Green Country", and "Travelin Light". Dexter GordonLullaby For A Monster ... CD
Steeplechase, 1976. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Not as striking as the word "Monster" in the title might make you think – but a nicely laidback European session, one that has Dexter blowing freely, with only bass and drum accompaniment. Tracks are mostly pretty long, and titles include "Tanya", "Born To Be Blue", "Nursery Blues", "Green Dolphin Street", and "Lullaby For A Monster". CD

Tiny GrimesCallin The Blues ... LP
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good ... $79.99
A seminal bit of early soul jazz guitar work from Tiny Grimes – a player better known for his work in an R&B vein, but an excellent jazz-based talent on this tasty session! Tiny's working here with a group that includes Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor and Ray Bryant on piano, in a mode that opens up the album's 4 long tracks into freely flowing vehicles for improvisation. Trombonist JC Higginbotham brings a nice "bottom" sound to the record, making for a slightly unusual frontline – and titles include "Blue Tiny", "Callin The Blues", "Grimes Times", and "Airmail Special". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono yellow & black label NJ pressing with deep groove and RVG stamp. Cover has light wear and aging, small fray at the top right corner, and extensive notes in pen in back. Label on Side A has a small peeled spot.)

✨✧ Guadeloupe ReflexionsUn Jeudi A L'Arawak ... CD
Creole Stream (Japan), 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A totally wonderful bit of jazz from Guadeloupe – recorded with a bit of American inspiration in the instrumentation, but also plenty of local grooves that really help flesh out the sound! The island combo features alto sax, flugelhorn, and plenty of electric piano – used with a freely fluid style that dances along wonderfully with the open-ended rhythms of the tunes. And while there's certainly a 70s funky jazz sound going on here, the overall execution is a bit more unusual – with some complicated rhythms that stretch out on the longer tracks, and really create a compelling sense of interplay that's quite different from anything in the US at the time! The electric piano is great, and tracks include "Eduardo", "Quand Les Oiseux No Pourront Plus Chanter", "Eduardo Soprano Latino", "Samba Pour Martine", and "Samba Arawak". (Global Grooves, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Joe HarriottFree Form & Abstract Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of legendary albums from the mighty Joe Harriott – a player who emigrated to England in the 50s, then set the scene on fire in the following decade! First up is Free Form – the landmark album that forever put saxophonist Joe Harriott on the map, and it's a brilliant batch of tracks that prove that Harriott was advancing the jazz avant garde in England as much as players like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor were advancing it in America. Despite the "free form" of the title, the tracks are more "new thing" – somewhat structured, with a rhythmic approach that's still a little straight, but solos that go nice and outside. Joe's overall conception is a beautiful mix of angular thinking with freely expressed soulful emotion – and the record's one that ranks up there with the 10 most groundbreaking of the 60s! The group's about as fantastic as you could ever expect from England at the time – with Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seamen on drums – and titles include "Formation", "Coda", "Abstract", "Straight Lines", and "Impression". Next is Abstract – one of the legendary sets of avant garde jazz by the British alto genius Joe Harriott – an artist who was sometimes billed as the British Ornette Coleman – a reputation he definitely earns with the groundbreaking quality of this album! The conception is bold right from the start – strongly rhythmic, but at a level that's different from Coleman's music – with some deeply emotional undertones to the solos (which also include work from Shake Keane on trumpet!) – and occasional modal elements that also bring in some spiritual elements to work perfect with the breakout solos. The group also features crack rhythm work from Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Phil Seaman on drums – and the track list includes "Subject", "Shadows", "Tonal", "Oleo", "Pictures", "Idiom", "Compound" and "Modal".
