Gerald WilsonPortraits ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1963. Used ... $9.99
An excellent album from Gerald Wilson – one that features some of his most inventive writing and arranging to date! The album's a perfect balance between the two sides of LA jazz in the 60s – the soul jazz groove, and the growing modern scene – which often didn't get the larger exposure it needed, but would sometimes peek forth under the guidance of mainstream figures like Wilson. The set features very strong solo work by hip LA players like Jimmy Woods on alto, Jack Wilson on piano, Harold Land on tenor, and Joe Pass on guitar – and the tracks are all tributes to some of Wilson's biggest influences – so "Eric" is dedicated to Eric Dolphy, "Ravi" to Ravi Shankar, "Paco" to the great Spanish matador, and so on. The whole thing's quite hip, and another example of how Wilson could perfectly balance the modernist impulses of the LA underground with a tight sense of arrangement and presentation that helped him reach a very wide audience at the time. VariousNotes From The Underground – Radical Music Of The 20th Century (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A fantastic set that really lives up to its title – by presenting a variety of music that all represented the farther reaches of modern sounds in the middle of the 20th Century – electronics, avant classical, and even groundbreaking jazz and poetry as well – all put together in a package that's as sonically striking as the cover! What makes the set great is the way it jumps around in genres and styles – very much as if it were representing the record collection of some New York intellectual at the start of the 60s – with a mix of sounds from Varese, John Cage, Stravinsky, Stockhausen, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Charles Ives, Schoenberg, Ali Akbar Khan, Satie, Allen Ginsberg, Ravi Shankar, and Ornette Coleman! There's also some work by Daphne Oram, who wasn't as available on vinyl over here at the time – but whose contributions sit nicely next to work by Pierre Schaeffer on the set – which is also rounded out by some tracks from The Prisoner and Un Chien Andalou too. 4CDs, great notes, and a heck of a lot of groundbreaking music! VariousRevolution In Sound – Pop Culture & The Avant Garde (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99 30.99
A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. There's a wealth of musical discoveries throughout – and the 4CD set is overflowing with key cuts from Ornette Coleman, Bela Bartok, Edgard Varese, Daphne Oram, Jean Sibelius, Eric Dolphy, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Henry, John Cate, John Coltrane, Humphrey Searle, Arnold Schoenberg, Bill Evans, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Julian Bream, and many others.
