Great stuff from Walter Wanderley – and a refreshing change from his work on Verve! The record's dated 1968, but we're kind of guessing that the tracks date from earlier years – although we're not sure. Most of the material's as sophisticated as anything Walter was cutting in the US at the time – and there's some great electric guitar playing on the record, which is something you don't normally hear on some of Wanderley's other organ trio albums. Sublime bossa jazz from one of the greatest combos on the Brazilian scene of the 60s – the crackling trio led by drummer Milton Banana, a really tremendous player no matter what the setting! The album bristles with energy from the very first note – virtually a blueprint for the sound of bossa piano in the 60s, with some great acoustic work here from Walter Wanderley on piano, and basslines that have a quick-spirited sense of timing to match Milton's drums. Tracks are all short and very tight, with a great sense of jazz – leaping along the grooves with titles that include "Samblues", "Noa Noa", "Primavera", "Samba De Verao", "Primitivo", and "Sambou, Sambou". One of the greatest albums by Victor Assis Brasil – a brilliant sax player who was one of Brazil's greatest jazz talents in the 70s! On this set, Victor really tightens things up from some of his spacier post-Coltrane albums of earlier years – crackling with a firey approach to the material, and hitting some great grooves on alto sax with a sharpness that we'd expect from American players like Lou Donaldson or Hank Crawford! Backing is a quartet with piano, vibes, bass, and drums – and the album includes the stellar triple tempo version of "Night and Day" that's forever made Victor a favorite with the jazz dance scene – plus the cuts "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Penedo", "O Cantador", and "Pedrinho". A great return to form for drummer Donald Bailey – a player who's probably best known for his work in the classic Jimmy Smith Trio of the late 50s/early 60s – but who sounds especially amazing here in a recent, righteous recording! Bailey's working with some very tight talent – the mighty Odeon Pope on tenor sax, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, George Burton on piano, and Tyrone Brown on bass – all players with a lot of depth in their music, and a brooding intensity that makes the record burn a lot more fiercely than anything Bailey ever recorded back in the day. The horns are especially nice – and although Tolliver's only on two of the album's nine tracks, Pope more than holds his own on the others – blowing that heady tenor sound that always grabs attention right from the get-go. Titles include "Blues It", "Gone Now", "For All We Know", "USQ/Trilogy", "Blue Gardenia", "Plant Life", and "Variations". CD

Although Herbie and Joao are listed together in the artist credits together for the record, they don't really play together on the record – as did Joao and Stan Getz on their album together. Instead, they trade off tracks of bossa nova material, recorded with Jobim in Rio – Joao's by EMI/Odeon, Herbie's by Atlantic. The set includes a host of great light breezy bossa stuff – like "Amor Em Paz", "O Barquinho", "Bim Bom", "Bolinha De Papel", and "Deve Ser Amor". Not totally over the top, but a very nice batch of breezy bossa tracks with lots of light flute and guitar lines floating around! (Brazil, Jazz) CD

Proof that Max Roach was always experimenting with his music – even in the later years! The album's one of a few 80s efforts to feature Roach's Double Quartet – a group that takes his regular four-piece jazz group and augments it with a string quartet – all in a sound that's almost an extension of modes first begun by Roland Kirk in the 60s! The Kirk reference isn't accidental – as the title track here is a great version of Kirk's "Bright Moments" – one that uses the strings to offset the core jazz work of Roach on drums, Odeon Pope on tenor, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, and Tyrone Brown on electric bass – all in ways that are as creative as they are playful, definitely in a Kirk-styled spirit. Other tunes follow suit – and use the strings to echo Kirk's dream of a black classical music, but also one that's always firmly jazz-based at all times. Titles include "Double Delight", "Hi Fly", "Bright Moments", "Elixir Suite", and "A Tribute To Duke & Mingus". LP, Vinyl record album

Great stuff by this fantastic funky fusion outfit that included Billy Hart on percussion, Eddie Green on electric piano, and Odeon Pope on tenor and flute. The real highlight, though, is Pat Gleason on arp, who adds a lot of cool dark moody touches to the group's fusiony playing. The whole record's a stellar mix of soul jazz and edgey electric playing, and it's far and above one of the best albums ever to be released on Muse. It's also one of the hardest to find, too, and this is one of the rare few copies we've ever seen! Tracks include "Celestial Bodies", "Got To Be There", "Uzuri", and "Perception". The core jazz sound of Odeon Pope's tenor, Tyrone Brown's electric bass, and Cecil Bridgewater's trumpet is expanded by a string group that includes Maxine Roach on viola – and that family relation is probably one reason that made experimentation like this easy for Max! The approach is a surprisingly great one – as the quartet seems to hold the Roach group a bit more inside than before – letting Pope and Bridgewater stretch out on their solos, but not get as sloppy as they had in some of the more outside Roach quartet outings. And the strings color in things really nicely in classic "with strings" jazz mode – but one that echoes more with 70s soul jazz use of such styles than earlier approaches. A major label effort from Max, but a record that's as hip as any he was recording at the time! The set feautres Max's quartet with Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Odeon Pope on saxes, and Calvin Hill on bass – plus a very small bit of additional piano by Walter Bishop Jr – and it's got an approach that mixes soul jazz with some experimental touches, and the occasional freewheeling percussion part by Max. Pope's work on tenor sax is especially nice, an edgey sound that recalls some of Billy Harper's work with Roach in earlier years.
