Lalo SchifrinPiano, Strings, & Bossa Nova (aka Insensatez) (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
MGM/Verve, 1963. Used ... $9.99
A wonderful album from Lalo Schfrin! This one mixes together bossa piano and sweeping string arrangements – in a style that's incredibly dark-edged and driving, with a sound that's at once spooky and lovely – a dancing groove that makes the best tracks really sparkle! The album's light years away from other "piano with strings" albums of the time – proof that Schifrin was easily one of the most imaginative forces of his generation, and an arranger who really helped reshape music in the 60s. Titles include the incredible version of "Maria" that's played quite often by Gilles Peterson – plus loads of other nice ones, like "The Wave", "Insensatez", "You And Me", "Murmurio", "Rapaz De Bem", "Rio After Dark", and "Time For Love". CD
(2002 LP sleeve edition with domestic obi. Small cutout hole in one corner.)

Phil WoodsPhil Woods & His European Rhythm Machine At The Montreux Jazz Festival ... CD
MGM/Verve, 1969. Used ... $9.99
One of the smartest moves Phil Woods ever made was to move to Paris in 1968 and pick up a European rhythm section that featured George Gruntz, Henri Texier, and Daniel Humair. At the time, the idea of a European rhythm section might have been considered suicide by some folks – but for Woods, it was a liberating move that allowed him to expand his sound tremendously. With the help of these three players – all loose modernists who still knew how to swing – Woods was able to craft some incredible tunes, long flowing numbers that featured his amazing tone stretching out in kind of a post-Coltrane sort of mode. This live set is one of the group's best recordings, and features extended versions of tracks that include "Capricci Cavaleschi", "I Remember Bird", "Ad Infinitum", and "Riot". CD
(Out of print sealed 2003 digipack pressing with a mark through the domestic obi.)

✨✧ Bill EvansFrom Left To Right (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve/MGM, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from Bill Evans – an amazing session of Fender Rhodes material that's quite different than most of his other work! The sound here is incredibly gentle – Bill barely hitting the keys of the Rhodes to send out spare, shimmering notes amidst larger arrangements from Michael Leonard – a talent we hardly know at all, but who fits Evans' piano with a great deal of sensitivity for the set. There's some wonderful tones and colors on each number here – and Eddie Gomez also helps to flesh out the sound a little bit with his basswork, providing those slow pulses of low tones that have a very subtle approach to rhythm. Titles include an amazing version of Luiz Eca's classic "The Dolphin" – plus "Soiree", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?", "Children's Play Song", "I'm All Smiles", and "Lullaby For Helene". CD features 4 bonus tracks too – alternate takes on titles in the album. CD
(1998 digipak pressing with a sticker remnant on the cover.)

✨✧ Walt Dickerson (& Sun Ra)Impressions Of A Patch Of Blue ... CD
MGM/Verve, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent album recorded by vibist Walt Dickerson during the mid 60's. Ostensibly a "soundtrack session", Dickerson freely improvises on themes from the movie A Patch Of Blue, and turns the score into a great platform for moody jazz playing on vibes and piano. Even more surprising is the fact that Sun Ra is the pianist in the quartet, making a rare non-Arkestra appearance – and on a major label, too! Titles include "Bacon & Eggs", "Alone In The Park", "Selina's Fantasy", and "Thataway". CD

✨✧ Johnny Mandel/Gerry MulliganI Want To Live! – Deluxe Edition ... CD
Ryko/MGM, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Johnny Mandel composed the memorable score for this late 50's film starring Susan Hayward, and the music is played by Mandel's orchestra and a smaller group led by Gerry Mulligan, which includes Art Farmer, Shelly Manne, and Bud Shank. The music was originally issued on 2 different albums – but the CD brings together both LPs worth of tracks, for a whopping 22 selections, wrapped in an overstuffed package brimming with notes and photos, and pressed on an "expanded CD" that also has Quick Time archival material! The whole thing's a jazz soundtrack lover's delight – and tracks include "Poker Game", "Stakeout", "Black Nightgown", "Death Scene", "The Last Mile", and "Gas Chamber Unveiling". (Soundtracks, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Harry JamesToday/Harry James Plays Neal Hefti ... CD
MGM/Jazz Beat (Spain), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Harry James a long way from the swing years – and sounding pretty darn great overall! First up is the album Today – a hip 1960 swinger that features the trumpet of Harry James in front of some tight arrangements from Ernie Wilkins and Bob Florence, both talents who know how to update an older band sound strongly – with a leaner, cleaner groove than James ever got in the old days! Harry's solos are strong and bright, and he also gets some help from players who include Willie Smith on alto sax, Jack Perciful on piano, and Ray Sims on trombone. Titles include "Undecided", "End Of Town Blues", "King Porter Stomp", "Ensemble", "Jersey Bounce", and "Lester Leaps In". On Harry James Plays Neal Hefti, Hefti does a great job of updating Harry's older swing style – and the backings here have a solid 60s bounce that's a lot groovier than you ever might have expected from a James record a few decades back! There's a great sense of dynamism in the rhythms here – clearly the same groove that Hefti brought to Basie, but tilted slightly different here – with enough room for James to take the lead on his solos. Titles include "The Creeper", "Mister Johnson", "Tweet Tweet", "Koo Koo", "Rainbow Kiss", and "Hot Pink".. CD

✨✧ Bill EvansBill Evans Album ... CD
Columbia, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pretty sublime album from Bill Evans – one that has him playing both Fender Rhodes and Steinway, overdubbed together, for an effect that's laidback and completely wonderful! The Fender Rhodes was a natural choice for Evans – given his fluid lyrical style, and on this set (and on his equally great record for MGM) Bill opens up with an approach that really suits him well. Each track features him shifting back and forth between electric and acoustic modes, dancing from one to the other in a way that makes the instruments come together beautifully – supported by some incredibly soulful bass work by Eddie Gomez, and drums by Marty Morrell. Titles include "Sugar Plum", "Funkallero", "Waltz for Debby", "TTT", "Re: Person I Knew", and "Comrade Conrad". CD

✨✧ Pepper Adams & Jimmy KnepperPepper-Knepper Quintet (with bonus tracks) ... CD
American Jazz Classics (Spain), 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a session from both players – and one of the long-lost sides on the short-lived Metrojazz label from MGM! Adams and Knepper head up a soulful group that features Wynton Kelly on piano (and a bit of organ!), Doug Watkins on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The real charm, though, is from Adams' solos, which are in that perfect gutbuckety mode that he could hit when he wanted to – a deep, dark drink the best tone the bari could offer, never getting clumsy at all, thanks to some lively rhythm playing. It's another one of those amazing sets recorded on a single date in NYC! Titles include "Minor Catastrophe", "Riverside Drive", All Too Soon", "Beaubien, "Primrose Path", and "Adams In The Apple". ✨✧ Red CallenderSwingin' Suite (with bonus tracks from Lowest) ... CD
Modern/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1955/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful bass work from 50s LA player Red Callender – heard here on his classic Swingin Suite album for Modern, plus tracks from the MGM album Lowest! Swingin Suite is easily one of Red's tightest sessions – a date that has Callender's basslines strongly leading a nonet of players that includes Harry Jones on trumpet, John Ewing on trombone, Willie Green on alto sax, and Buddy Collette on flute and tenor. Collette's lines have a nice sharp edge throughout, and soar out beautifully amidst the bigger backings – and although a "suite", the whole session's got a much more relaxed feel than that compositional title might make you think. Tracks include "On Again", "Greenery", "Pastel", "Dancers", "October Blue", "Bihari", "Skyline", and "Outlines". The remaining tracks on the set were recorded as part of Callender's Lowest album for MGM – a set of both bass and tuba work. Tracks included here feature Callender on bass only, with Gerald Wilson on trumpet and Collette again on flute and tenor. Titles include "Another Blues", "Volume Too", "Five Four Blues", "Pickin Pluckin Whistlin & Walkin", and "Tea For Two". CD
