✨✧ Lionel HamptonMess Is Here Revisited – Lionel Hampton Orchestra 1958 ... CD
Bertelsmann/Hat Art (Switzerland), 1958. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A rare German live set from Lionel Hampton – and one that shows just how wonderfully multi-faceted his work could be at the time! Sure, Hampton rose to fame with his romping group in the early 40s – but by the late 50s, he had a way of opening the gate to so many ideas and inspirations, his sound was always shifting and changing – even when the group handled familiar tunes! The lineup here is filled with surprises throughout – piano from the great Oscar Dennard, a mix of horns from unusual American and European players – including Art Hoyle, Dave Gozales, and Macky Kasper on trumpets – plus Lou Blackburn and Wade Marcus on trombones, Gerald Weinkopf on tenor, Lonnie Shaw on baritone, and Bobby Plater on alto – and some especially cool use of guitar from Billy Mackel and electric bass from Julius Browne – the latter instrument very unusual for such a group at the time. Cornelius James sings a bit on the set, and tunes include "Move", "New Orleans Woman", "Round Midnight", "Almost Paradise", "Confirmation", "My Prayer", and "The Mess Is Here". CD

Lionel Hampton with Milt Buckner & The All StarsAlive & Jumping ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A great revival moment for some older jazz giants – all players who really catch fire here in the MPS scene of the 70s! The record features the vibes of Lionel Hampton in the lead (and, if the cover is to be believed, also a bit of drums) – and also includes excellent work from Milt Buckner on Hammond (one of his last sessions ever) – plus especially strong work from Cat Anderson on trumpet and Eddie Chamblee on tenor – both players who really get to step out here a bit at times, and remind us what they can do when they really get a chance to wail! Other players in the small group include Billy Mackel on guitar and Paul Moen on alto – and titles include "Midnight Sun", "Avalon", "Funky Mama", and "I'm Confessin" – plus the obligatory jam on "Flying Home". Buddy Rich/Lionel HamptonTransition ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A mixed bag of work from Buddy and Hamp – part straight jazz, and part sweet electric funk! The first two-thirds of the album features Rich and Hampton with Terry Wilson on piano, Zoot Sims on tenor, and George Duvivier on bass – grooving hard in that open-ended way of some of Hampton's small group dates for Verve from the early 50s, on titles that include "Avalon", "Ring Dem Bells", "Ham Hock Blues", and "Air Mail Special". The last third of the album features a larger group – still with Rich and Hampton, but also with some keyboards from Kenny Barron, plus tenor by Sal Nistico and guitar from Jack Wilson. The vibe on these tracks is a bit more 70s-styled – with some of the soaring electric modes you might expect from Groove Merchant! Titles include "EG" and "Fum" – both great funky numbers! LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy ClevelandIntroducing Jimmy Cleveland & His All Stars ... LP
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Good ... $11.99 14.99
An early leader session for Jimmy Cleveland – one that pulls him out of the Lionel Hampton group, and puts him in the company of a number of different all-stars – top level players that Mercury brought together in three different sessions for the album. Players include Lucky Thompson, Cecil Payne, Barry Galbraith, Wade Legge, Paul Chambers, and Jerome Richardson – and it's the quality of the ensemble grooving that really makes the album swing, a lot more than Cleveland's solos on his own. Titles include "Vixen", "Hear Ye Hear Ye", "See Minor", "Bone Brother", "Count 'Em", and "Little Beaver". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label drummer logo pressing with deep groove. NOTE – Vinyl has a small edge warp that causes the first track on each side to skip. Rest plays VG. Cover has yellowing from age, small seam splits, gloss peel at the sides, and pencil in back.)

✨✧ Eddie Lockjaw DavisFox & The Hounds (Jazz Line) ... LP
RCA (France), 1967. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the wonderful and overlooked albums that Eddie Lockjaw Davis cut for RCA in the mid 60s – each of which features the tenorist in a slightly different mode than usual, with a great focus on his tone! This one has Eddie as the main soloist in front of arrangements by Bobby Plater, who'd done a lot of work for Lionel Hampton – and the vibe is a bit like some of the Johnny Hodges records over at Verve in a similar mode. Titles include "I Wished On The Moon", "Born To Be Blue", "People Will Say We're In Love", "Call Me", "Day by Day", and "Out of Nowhere". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s issue.)
