✨✧ James Brandon Lewis & Chad TaylorLive In Willisau ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the boldest work we've ever heard from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an artist you might know from his bigger label recordings for Okeh/Sony, but who sounds completely unbridled here in the company of the great drummer Chad Taylor! Taylor's a player who can step outside strongly, yet still find this inherent sense of swing – and that balance works beautifully alongside the tenor of Lewis, and seems to encourage him to take some great chances throughout the set – with some especially great moments of drums and tenor that almost evoke the way that David Murray or Sonny Rollins might handle such a performance! A really revelatory set – and a great reminder of Taylor's genius, too – with selections that include "Watakushi No Sekai", "Matape", "Come Sunday", "Imprints", "Twenty Four", "Radiance", and "Under/Over The Rainbow". James Brandon LewisCode Of Being ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2021. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Tenorist James Brandon Lewis has really been on fire in recent years – always opening up new doors in his music, and surprising us with each new record, which seems to have a slightly different flavor that further expands his palette of sound! Here, Lewis presents some beautiful original compositions with a group that has amazingly fluid drum work from the great Chad Taylor, lovely colors on piano from Aruan Ortiz, and these rollingly soulful basslines from Brad Jones – all players who are seamlessly tied to Lewis tenor, as the four paint these really wonderful pictures in sound. The approach is more structured than some of Lewis' other recordings, but at a level that's still filled with bursts of personal expression throughout – on titles that include "Every Atom Glows", "Archimedean", "Resonance", "Per 5", "Tessera", and "Code Of Being". Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis just keeps getting deeper and deeper with each new release – very different than the artist who first emerged a number of records back, and one with a strong ability to explore the farther sides of the jazz spectrum! That's definitely the case here – as Lewis plays tenor at the head of a quartet with Aruan Ortiz on piano, Brad Jones on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums – a lineup who are more than fluid enough to move with the ideas that flow effortlessly both from the compositional pen of the leader, and his well-crafted, very personal lines on tenor sax! The tunes vary in length, which further deepens the individuality of the set – and titles include "Helix", "Per 1", "Breaking Code", "An Anguish Departed", "Loverly", "Molecular", "Cesaire", and "A Lotus Speaks". Jack Taylor & The Mark IIITaylor's Sound ... LP
In Records, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $34.99
A really cool set, issued here on a small label from Oakland – a cool combo with Edwin Kelly on organ, John E Lewis on guitar, Ricardo Lewis on drums, and Leo Mallari on flute – plus vibes from leader Jack Taylor, who wrote all original material for the set! The tunes are really lovely – almost in a Verve 60s mode, but with more of an indie vibe overall – and the groove moves between lighter bossa moments and harder soul jazz cuts, all nicely fresh, given the original songs! LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE: Vinyl has a pressing flaw on the edge, which can cause a bit of jump at the start of side two – but rest plays fine, and sounds well. Cover has light wear and a bit of tape.)

✨✧ James Brandon LewisJesup Wagon ... CD
Tao Forms, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis".
