A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

Very groovy work from guitarist George Benson – and a set that really helped him make the transition from small group soul jazz to some of his more ambitious work to come! The album's still quite soulful and a bit funky at times – but it also features larger arrangements from the great Tom McIntosh – cast in a blend of modern rhythms, shades, and colors that really help open up Benson's sound. The approach is similar to that McIntosh was using with Bobby Timmons and Jack McDuff at the same time – tight backings, but still with plenty of room for the lead soloist – and Benson's got a great affinity for this sort of album. The tracks are a nice mix of originals and pop items – with cuts like "Sunny", "Thunder Walk", "Walk On By", "Giblet Gravy", and "Sack Of Woe". Plus, the CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Billie's Bounce", and 2 alternate versions of "What's New?". CD

A pretty unusual album – and one by an obscure player who's not to be confused with Charles Brown, the blues singer – or Chuck Brown, the leader of the Soul Searchers! This Charlie Brown is a tenor player – listed as obscure even in the notes to the session – which is a laidback set of soul jazz numbers which feature Chuck's tenor over backings by Horace Ott. The overall style is similar to some of Hank Crawford's work from the time, particularly his albums on Kudu – with a polished feel to the backings, offset by some gutsier work by the main soloist – and the group is pretty great, and features Neal Creque on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Pretty Purdie on drums, and Billy Butler on guitar. Titles include "Back On The Track", "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Love The One You're With", and "(Funky) Sunny", probably the nicest track on the album. CD

A pair of albums from saxophonist Wilton Felder – back to back on a single CD! We All Have A Star offers up solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy". Inherit The Wind is one of the best Crusaders-related solo projects – a soulful bit of fusion from saxophonist Wilton Felder, co-produced with his fellow Crusaders! The album's got the best sunny finish of the group's late 70s albums – traces of Latin, funk, and soul bubbling through a warm jazzy mix – staying soulful all the way through, and coming up with a sound that's smooth, but never sleepy. The blueprint for a million other records – none of which ever sounded this good! Titles include "Insight", "LA Light", "Until The Morning Comes", "Someday We'll All Be Free", and "Inherit The Wind". A great little live set from Von Freeman – and one of his best albums! Like some of his rare few sides from the 70s, this one features Von in a relaxed setting – blowing as the main lead soloist in front of a piano trio recorded at the Dakota Bar & Grill in St Paul, Minnesota, in 1996. Unlike other sets, though, this one really shows the edge that Von can have when he's working at his best. Gone are the easily-blown standards that never really illustrate the genius of Von that's been an influence on decades of players – from Andrew Hill to Malachi Favors to Eric Alexander. Freeman's range on the tenor is incredible – taking in a wealth of influences that runs from Coleman Hawkins to Ben Webster to Coltrane and Wayne Shorter – and while the rhythm section is comprised of younger players from St Paul, Von's the real talent here, and has plenty of room to work. Titles include "Footprints", "Caravan", "Crazy She Calls me", "Blues For Sunnyland", and "Bye Bye Blackbird". CD

A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Sangster's great here kicking up a groove for the combo – and the tunes also feature plenty of tenor and flute from Col Loughnan, whose tight lines underscore all the best elements in the organ. There's a wonderful 60s nite club vibe running through the whole set – and titles include "Shades Of McSoul", "Sunny", "Blues For Madeline", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Rivera Mountain", and "Whatever It's Worth". A wonderful tribute to this European singer – the lovely Rita Reys, served up here in a package that features five of her best albums, all in little LP-styled sleeves! First up is a record on which Rita Reys meets Oliver Nelson – and a host of other great jazz talents, including Lee Konitz, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, and Klaus Doldinger! The tracks on the set are all standards, but they're done in the tightly swinging style of Nelson's best backing work for vocalists at the time – complete with those warm tones and colors that always made his work some of our favorite in this mode. The mode is a bit different for Reys, who we normally know from more fragile settings – but it works especially well here, and almost seems to compensate for a faltering quality in her vocals at the time. Titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Quiet Nights", "The Second Time Around", "If I Were A Bell", "Ill Wind", and "Wives & Lovers". Rita A Go Go is a wonderful live set – recorded with backings by a full orchestra led by Pim Jacobs, who bring a soulful punch to the proceedings that's really wonderful – and which helps Reys step out even more strongly than usual! Jacobs plays a bit of Hammond on the set, which is especially nice to hear next to Rita's vocals – and titles include "Call Me", "So Nice", "Sunny", "Day Tripper", "Goin Out Of My Head", and "Goodbye Sadness". Today is an incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". Relax With Rita & Pim is a collection of work recorded by Dutch singer Rita Reys – all done with very jazzy backing by the Pim Jacobs Combo, a group that Rita often sang with at the time! The tunes on the set have some very groovy 60s touches – light bossa rhythms, sweet 60s approaches to rhythm, and a syncopated swing that makes the record groove a bit more than some of her other work from the time. In fact, the feel of the set's so nicely swinging, that the "relax" in the title is a bit misplaced – as out of all of Rita's records, this is the one that makes us want to get up out of the chair! Titles "Summertime", "Waltz For Debby", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Desafinado", "Bluesette", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Fly Me To The Moon". The last album is Rita Reys Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim – a set that shows that move into moodier modes that the vocalist took in later years – with a style that works beautifully here for the bossa compositions! Backings are by Rogier Van Otterloo, but the set also features a core combo with frequent collaborator, pianist Pim Jacobs – and the blend of piano, strings, and vocals has all the right lofty currents for these classic tunes by Jobim, with almost a mature Claus Ogerman vibe to the whole record. Titles include "Dindi", "How Insensitive", "This Happy Madness", "Triste, "Song Of The Sabia", and "Once Again". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

A pair of crucial Cecil Taylor sessions from the 60s – both of which show the free-thinking pianist working amidst some larger arrangements! First up are three tracks from the Gil Evans album Into The Hot – all tunes written by Cecil Taylor – a very bold move for Evans, given Taylor's strongly out reputation even at this point in his career – and possibly even more bold, given that Taylor's on the tracks playing piano, alongside players who include Archie Shepp on tenor, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Henry Grimes on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – plus work on one track from Ted Curson on trumpet and Roswell Rudd on trombone. The material's fantastic, and is a key part of Taylor's work at the time, and shows a very different setting for his piano – a bit of tension with the larger Evans group, in a way that's almost more compelling than his own early dates as a leader – on the titles "Pots", "Bulbs", and "Mixed". Next is the Unit Structures album – one of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)".
