Throttle Elevator Music with Kamasi WashingtonThrottle Elevator Music IV ... LP
Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
The best album so far from Throttle Elevator music – thanks to some fantastic saxophone from Kamasai Washington! The group was always pretty good before – but this time around, they really rise above their past – and also have Washington handling all the arrangements on the record, which gives them a spiritual sound we never would have expected! Core group members include Gregory Howe and Matt Montgomery on guitars and piano, Mike Hughes on drums, and Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet – but the presence of Washington is what really seals the deal, on tracks that include "Gibraltar Road", "We Can Work With That", "Sweet Spot", "No One To Vote For", "Boeske Trail", and "Throwing The Switch". Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonFinal Floor ... CD
Wide Hive, 2021. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
We certainly hope this isn't the final floor for Throttle Elevator Music, as we've always enjoyed the many sounds the group has given us over the years – styles served up here on a record that's almost a testament to the collaborative growth of the ensemble over the past decade or so, as the album brings together recordings made over various years, with new work added in recently to complete the set! As usual, Gregory Howe is at the core – handling most of the arrangements and overseeing the recording, with equal help from longtime musical partner Matt Montgomery on bass – opening up into a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Kasey Knudsen on alto and tenor, and Mike Blankenship on a bit of Farfisa organ! You can definitely feel Washington's presence when he's on a session, but the overall sound of the record is equally nice – a real evolution of the group's sound from the start, maybe served up in part by the more recent touches added to the mix by Howe. Titles include "Supraliminal Space", "Caste Off", "Daggerboard", "Ice Windows", "Rooftop Sunrise", "Return To Form", "Heart Of Hearing", and "Recirculate". CD

Throttle Elevator Music feat Kamasi WashingtonRetrorespective ... CD
Wide Hive, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Not a retrospective of the music of Throttle Elevator Music – as you might mistake from the title – but instead a fresh new album that features the group working tremendously with the mighty Kamasai Washington! Washington isn't just a guest, but a key member of the group – and he really helps to push forward that deepening sound they've developed since their first release – a huge evolution that only gets better when Kamasai's on board. Washington plays tenor on the record, and contributes songs and arrangements – and some of the vibe of the set is maybe a small combo take on territory he explored on The Epic album – proud and righteous, with a very uplifting spirit. Other group members include Erik Jekabson on flugelhorn and trumpet, Ava Mendoza on guitar, Matt Mongtomery on bass and piano, and Thomas McCree on drums – and producer Gregory Howe also contributes songs and arrangements. Titles include "Flux & Solder", "Liminality", "Playing The Alleyway", "February Drift", "Subtract Limited", and "Rapid Rotation". CD

Kamasi WashingtonBecoming – Music From The Netflix Documentary ... CD
Young Turks, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Really great work from saxophone genius Kamasi Washington – music that's very different than the longform sounds of his epic sets – yet very beautiful too, and clearly showing off a whole new feather in Kamasi's mighty cap! As you can tell from the title, the work is music for a documentary soundtrack – and Washington really rises to the occasion with music of majesty – all jazz throughout, but mixed with some extra strings at times too – a bit like those fantastic instrumental moments that Bill Lee did for the early films of Spike – served up here with a similar sense of pride, power, and subtle righteousness! Other players include Rickey Washington on alto and flute, Ryan Porter on trombone, Dontae Winslow on trumpet, and Cameron Graves on piano and Fender Rhodes – on titles that include "Take In The Story", "Shot Out Of A Cannon", "Song For Fraser", "Southside V1", "Detail", "Fashion Now & Then", "Connections", "Looking Forward", and "I Am Becoming". Kamasi WashingtonEpic (3CD set) ... CD
Brainfeeder, 2015. New Copy 3 CDs ... $26.99 28.98
A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". Kamasi WashingtonHarmony Of Difference ... CD
Young Turks, 2017. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Pure fantasticness from the great Kamasi Washington – a set that's much more compact than his sprawling Epic, but which has an equally wonderful vibe overall! The album features material that Washington performed at the Whitney Biennial – to accompany paintings by his sister – but the whole thing stands alone beautifully, with that free-flowing, always spiritual vibe that's made Washington one of the strongest young jazz talents to emerge in recent years! The music resonates strongly with the work of some of his key LA contemporaries – like Ronald Bruner Jr, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Thundercat – all of whom perform in the large ensemble – helping Kamasi's tenor soar to the skies on waves of collaborative joy. Washington composed, arranged, and even produced the record himself – and in some ways, the tightness of the performance makes the whole thing even more satisfying than Epic – as we hope you feel too, on titles that include "Desire", "Humility", "Truth", "Integrity", "Knowledge", and "Perspective". Kamasi WashingtonHeaven & Earth (3CDs – includes bonus CD) ... CD
Young Turks, 2018. New Copy 3 CDs ... $23.99 24.98
Truly tremendous work from saxophonist Kamasi Washington – a set that may well even blow away his groundbreaking Epic album – given the scope of soul and spirit in the music! As with the previous project, this one's double-length, but maybe feels even more fitted to the mode – as Washington leads this incredible ensemble that unifies a jazz group, orchestra, and choir – all at a level that might even top some of Alice Coltrane's early 70s albums for Impulse! There's a richness in vision here right from the start – music that knows what it is, where it's going, and what it can accomplish – very personal, but also very welcoming too – just the right sort of spirit to help get the nation back on track! Washington blows tenor throughout – and gets great help from Cameron Graves on piano, Brandon Coleman on organ and keyboards, and Miles Mosley on bass – whose work alone really seems to drive the proceedings! Titles include "Can You Hear Him", "Fists Of Fury", "Will You Sing", "Journey", "Street Fighter Mas", "The Space Travelers Lullaby", "The Psalmnist", "One Of One", and "The Invincible Youth". Comes with a bonus CD called The Choice – with the Kamasi-composed "The Secret Of Jinsonson", "Agents Of Multiverse" and "My Family", plus covers of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Ooh Child" – it's another 38 minutes of music hidden in the center of the cover! Mack Avenue, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A set that's maybe a bit more searing than earlier records from Cameron Graves – more full-on fusion at times, although still with some of the spacier elements we liked from before – yet definitely driven at points with the kind of energy that recalls the George Duke/Stanley Clarke experiments of the 70s! The rhythms at the core are really on fire – drums from Mike Mitchell and bass from Max Gerl – and the guitar of Colin Cook often matches the bold lines of Graves on piano and keyboards. Kamasi Washington guests on two tracks, Graves sings on one other cut – and titles include "Red", "Super Universes", "Sons Of Creation", "The Life Carriers", "Sacred Spheres", "Master Spirits", and "Eternal Paradise". Josef LeimbergAstral Progressions (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
World Galaxy/De Rap Winkel (Netherlands), 2017. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $44.99 49.99
A masterpiece from trumpeter Josef Leimberg – a set that features guest appearances by Kamasi Washington, Georgia Anne Muldrow, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson – yet a record that has an amazing sound that's all its own! Washington's working in a blend of spiritual and electric jazz currents – often in settings that blend strings from Atwood-Ferguson with his own bold solos, and some rising instrumentation that effortlessly blends vocals, reeds, guitar, and keyboards – all in a mode that hearkens back to the majestic sound of the Cadet/Concept years in Chicago, but which has a distinctly 21st Century flavor overall! The music is incredible – righteous, visionary, and full of power – and we hope we'll be hearing plenty more from Leimberg in the future. For now, the album's more than enough to blow our minds – and titles include "Interstellar Universe", "Between Us 2", "The Awakening", "As I Think Of You", "Astral Progressions", "Lonely Fire", and "Celestial Visions". MaishaThere Is A Place ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A record with a soaring spirit from the contemporary London scene – a fantastic full-length statement from Maisha, a group we'd heard about over the years – but are only now getting a chance to enjoy! The group's led by drummer Jake Long, but features this really tremendous work on tenor and flute from Nubya Garcia – who's got a majestic approach that's very much in the best spiritual jazz modes, but which also maybe gets a bit more personal at times too – especially on the passages with flute, which really brings a lyrical beauty to the record – and the group also features guitar, keyboards, bass, and two more percussionists! Long's rhythm progressions are nicely inventive, and very organic – and the sound is fleshed out at times by the slight addition of added strings, harp, and a bit of trumpet – all to underscore the more righteous currents in the music. Really fantastic – one that might knock Kamasi Washington off your turntable – with titles that include "Osiris", "Azure", "Kaa", "There Is A Place", and "Eaglehurst/The Palace". CD

Wide Hive, 2000s/2010s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
An incredible late-life chapter from trombonist Phil Ranelin – a musician who first flourished on the Detroit scene of the 70s, as part of the Tribe Records underground in that city – and one who dropped off the radar of most folks until a huge revival in the past two decades, spurred on by new interest in his classic recordings! Ranelin got a chance to work elsewhere during this stretch, but his greatest champions may well have been the Wide Hive label – who not only gave Phil new access to the studio, and exposure to a much wider audience than before – but also allowed him to create in some of the larger ensemble modes that were always his strongest suit! The music here is pulled from Ranelin's albums for Wide Hive, but also includes a few new tracks too – and musicians include Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Zane Musa on alto and tenor, Kamasi Washington on tenor, Roger Glenn on vibes, Danny Grissett on piano, Nate Morgan on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Calvin Keys on guitar, Big Black on congas, and Donald Bailey on drums. Titles include "Living A New Day", "Blue Bossa", "Moorish", "In Search Of The One", "This One's For Trane", "Freddie's Groove", "Full Moon", "Spiritual Vibrations", "How Do We End All This Madness", "Fantasy Vibrations", "Black On The Nu", "A Tear In Elmina", "Close Encounters", "Shades Of Dolphy", and "Perseverance 2019". An amazing album from this soon-to-be-famous group – a set that's even more incredible than their previous record – and that one really knocked us out of the park! Tenorist Shabaka Hutchings is in tremendous territory here – recording for Impulse Records, and completely reinventing the spiritual legacy of that famous label – by taking his roots in South African jazz and fusing them through the boundless imagination of the contemporary London scene – a place where Hutchings has gotten great attention in recent years, and has risen to become one of the most important talents to emerge in recent years. The group features alto, bass, drums, and plenty of percussion – plus vocal moments from Siyabonga Mthembu – all delivered with a righteous current of energy that really lives up to the promise of the title, and which may well make Shabaka an even more important messenger in jazz than Kamasi Washington. Washington sounds great here – stretching out at some key moments – but the sound is definitely that of the group, with Kamasi acting as a strong sideman, rather than forcing his own sound on the set – in a batch of shorter tracks that all nicely demonstrate a sense of economy from all players.
