Vincent HerringPreaching To The Choir ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Vincent Herring can certainly preach with his horn – a deeply soulful version of alto sax that gets plenty of room to open up and speak its message here – working through a set of long, lovely tracks with really great support! The group's a quartet – with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums – instantly hitting that kind of a groove that really makes Herring sound his best – a level of accompaniment he doesn't always get on record – but when he does, on a set like this, it reminds us all over again how much we can love his music when it finds the right sound! There's a solidity here that makes the record one of Herring's best in years – and titles include "Dudli's Dilemma", "Ojos De Rojo", "Granted", "Preaching To The Choir", "Minor Swing", "Fried Pies", and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". ✨✧ Jack WalrathHeavy Mirth ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Jack Walrath is one of those cats who's always making interesting music – records that never fully get their due, but always find a way of getting themselves into the best of jazz collections! This album's another feather in Jack's cap – a creatively put-together date that's filled with really creative original compositions – long cuts that feature sharp changes that really unlock the best energy of the album's lineup of players, which includes excellent tenor from Abraham Burton, bold piano work from Orrin Evans, and rhythm from Boriz Kozlov on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums. TC III vocalizes on the track "A Long Slow Agonizing Descent Into The Depth Of Despair" – and other cuts are instrumental, with titles that include "Bassballs", "Dark Star", "Cloak & Dagger", "Road Kill", and "Drifting". ✨✧ Lonnie SmithBreathe ... LP
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great work from Lonnie Smith – one of the few Hammond heroes from the past who's continued to give us fresh-sounding music over the years! Lonnie's been reinvigorated after returning to Blue Note – and this tight little set follows all the growth he's experienced at the label – organ lines that soar nicely, with a complexity that Smith never had in his early years – given strong rhythmic support from Johnathan Blake on drums and Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar! The middle core of the album is live – recorded at the Jazz Standard – and features work from John Ellis on trumpet, Jason Marshall on baritone, Robin Eubanks on trombone, and Sean Jones on trumpet – on titles that include "Bright Eyes", "Pilgrimage", "Two Damn Hot", "Track 9", and "World Weeps". The set also features two covers – both with surprising vocals from Iggy Pop – a nice take on the Timmy Thomas tune "Why Can't We Live Together", and a version of "Sunshine Superman". ✨✧ Michael ThomasEvent Horizon ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Not the first album we've heard from saxophonist Michael Thomas, but a record that definitely has us looking at his music all over again – thanks to a double-length collection of wonderfully extended tunes – on which Thomas really runs with bold, open energy on the alto sax! The group here has no piano – just the trumpet of Jason Palmer in the frontline, plus bass from Hans Glawischnig and drums from Johnathan Blake – two rhythm players who bring plenty to the table, but sometimes like to let the horns to the swinging – which Thomas and Palmer do in these nicely blocky passages of sound. All tunes are originals by the leader – and titles include "Fox & Cat", "Dr Teeth", "Framework", "Chant", "Underground", "Event Horizon", and "Distance". CD
