Rashied Ali QuartetNew Directions In Modern Music ... LP
Survival, 1973. Very Good+ ... $98.99
Incredible work from drummer Rashied Ali – a set that really delivers on the promise of the music he first crafted with John Coltrane! The vision here is wide and expansive, yet still has a soulful, spiritual heart – a great balance of the free impulses of all players with the core unity of the group – a righteous energy that holds up strongly, even over the course of the album's two long tracks. The set's a great contrast to the work going on in the European scene at the time – and really shows how the American indie recording scene was able to capture performances in a more solid, focused sort of way. In addition to Ali's work on drums, the quartet also features excellent alto and flute from Carlos Ward, piano from Fred Simmons, and bass from Stafford James – the last of whom really ties the whole thing together with his sense of soul. Titles include "Akela" and "As Salaam Alikum". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label pressing with Bell Sound stamp.)

Cory WeedsLive At Frankie's Jazz Club ... CD
Cellar Live (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
A Cory Weeds album that's really a cut above – given that this live session has the alto saxophonist joined by two great guests – Harold Mabern on piano and Terrell Stafford on trumpet! Both Mabern and Stafford get plenty of space to solo, and their contributions are wonderful – particularly Harold, who's rock-solid approach on the keys brings some of the focused energy he's more likely to use with some of the New York scene he records more regularly with – like Eric Alexander or Jim Rotondi. The rest of the group features Michael Glynn on bass and Julian MacDonough on drums – and titles include some well-chosen numbers from old school Blue Note vintage – including "Mood Malody", "Bluesanova", "Tolypso", "The Three Minors", "Up Tight's Creek", and "Consequence". Oliver LakeHeavy Spirits ... LP
Arista/Freedom, 1975. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Great early work from Lake – playing here in a number of different settings, but always with well-matched collaborators! 3 tracks on the set – "Owshet", "Heavy Spirits", and "While Pushing Down Turn" – featuring Lake with Olu Dara on trumpet, Donald Smith on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and Stafford James on bass, playing in sort of a freebop mode. Three more tracks – "Movement Equals Creation", "Intensity", and "Altoviolin" – feature Lake on alto, playing with a violin trio that sounds very dark and moody. "Rocket" is a trio piece, with Joseph Bowie and Charles Bobo Shaw – and "Lonely Blacks" is a somber solo sax piece. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch, ring & edge wear, a lightly bent corner, and sticker spot.)

Woody ShawLotus Flower ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $14.99
Beautiful later work from Woody Shaw – perfectly honed, in the soaring, stretching, soulful exploratory style of his best work in the 70s! The group's a quartet with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, Tony Reedus on drums, and Steve Turre joining Woody in the frontline – and the excellent work of the rhythm section provides a lively forum for the soloists to stretch out wonderfully, without going too far, or getting overindulgent and trapped in designs of their own making. The set sparkles with 5 original tunes – Turre's "Lotus Flower", James' "Game", Miller's "Eastern Joy Dance", and "Song Of Songs" and "Rahsaan's Run", both by Shaw. CD
(Part of the Enja Real Jazz Classics series!)

Woody Shaw with Bobby HutchersonMaster Of The Art ... CD
Elektra (Japan), 1982. Used ... $18.99
A brilliant date from the later years of Woody Shaw – an album that equally shows Woody's own talents, and those of his key group of younger players too! Shaw's trumpet is perfect in both modes here – the hard-blown righteous numbers Woody first gave the world from his start, and the warmer, more sensitive ballads he was crafting a bit later in his career – never too smooth or mellow, but showing a nice link to tradition in his tone. All tracks are longish, and the group features Steve Turre on trombone, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums – all familiar players to Shaw, working tightly together on the date. As an added bonus, Bobby Hutcherson joins the group for most of the set – ringing out a strongly soulful tone on his vibes, on titles that include "Misterioso", "400 Years Ago Tomorrow", "Diane", and "Sweet Love Of Mine". The album also features a bonus interview track with Woody too! CD
