Al Cohn & Shorty RogersEast Coast – West Coast Scene ... LP
RCA, 1954. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A classic session in the tried and true marketing style of "East Coast vs West Coast" jazz, with one side of tracks by a group led by Al Cohn, and featuring Gene Quill, Hal McKusick, and Joe Newman. The other side's got Shorty Rogers representin' on the West Coast, with Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims, Bud Shank, and Shelly Manne. The album's a nice batch of tracks, in the tightly arranged style that characterizes many of these mid-50's RCA jazz sessions. However, since Cohn's measured playing could never really be taken for New York Hot, and since his longtime partner Zoot Sims is part of Rogers' West Coast group, it's hard to say that these sides are really any sort of true battle between the coasts. Instead, though, the tracks are nice and long, with more room for solos than usual, and titles that include "Loki", "Cool Sunshine", and "Inside Out". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, light wear, and some aging.)

✨✧ Stan GetzEarly Stan (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1949/1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 60s album that collects earlier 10" sessions by Stan – one from 1949, and one from 1954! The 1949 sessions have Stan playing in a group with Terry Gibbs, Shorter Rogers, and George Wallington – on tunes that include "Michelle (parts 1 & 2)", "T&S", "Cuddles", and "Terry's Tune". The 1954 sessions are a bit more in the classic "Early Stan" mode – as they feature Getz working in a quintet with Jimmy Raney on guitar and Hall Overton on piano – very much in the Roost mode that first got Stan his fame, with that amazing tone really opening up on numbers that include "Motion", "Lee", "Signal", and "Round Midnight". CD features 4 bonus alternate tracks too! CD

✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz & The Lighthouse All Stars Live ... CD
Giant Steps (UK), 1953/1955. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning roster of players made up the house band at Hermosa Beach, CA's legendary Lighthouse Cafe – an outfit accompanied on these early-to-mid 50s dates by tenor sax giant Stan Getz – with work that's as much an aural snapshot of the sound of place and time as it is a piece of the players' pedigrees! The 2CDs in this set is made up of work captured on a few dates in 1953 and 1955 – some of it laidback and charming, and some of it with more than a little bit of heat and heaviness – with lots of players that include Russ Freeman on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, Jimmy Guiffre on baritone, Teddy Charles on vibes, Howard Rumsey on bass, Shorty Rogers and Maynard Ferguson on trumpets, Milt Bernhart on trombone, and others! Disc 1 titles include "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Jive At Five", "Moonlight In Vermont", Topsy", "Bernie's Tune", "Solitaire" and more. ✨✧ Shorty RogersBig Shorty Rogers Express ... LP
RCA, 1953. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic West Coast session, long hailed by critics as one of the best to come out of the LA scene. Shorty Rogers leads a crack group of players that includes Art Pepper, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper through a bunch of short swinging tracks that really have an edge to them. The tracks were originally recorded for a 10" LP, and they're combined here with a few more that were recorded during another Rogers session in 1956. Titles include "Blues Express", "Coop The Graas", "Contours", "Tales Of An African Lobster", "Pink Squirrel", "Boar-Jibou", and "The Sweetheart Of Sigmund Freud". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Back cover has a small ink stamp. Cover is mostly seam split, but still in solid shape!)

Shorty RogersSwinging Mr Rogers ... LP
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A standout set from Shorty – tightly arranged numbers performed by a quartet that includes Jimmy Giuffre, Pete Jolly, Curtis Counce, and Shelly Manne – all working with Shorty in perfect west coast form! Despite the length of the tunes, the overall feel is similar to Rogers' excellent Wherever The Five Winds Blow album for RCA – and makes the record a great set, done without any gimmicks or tricks – and enough of the modern touch still left from Rogers' first few years on record. Titles include "Martians Go Home", "Trickleydidlier", "Not Really The Blues", and "Michele's Meditation". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some light peeling of the laminate near the opening edge, but is nice overall – a nice original copy.)

Shorty Rogers & Andre PrevinCollaboration (Jim Flora cover) ... LP
RCA, 1954. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
A rare mid 50s collaboration between pianist Andre Previn and trumpeter Shorty Rogers – an instrumental collaboration between the pair – one that's mostly set up in the mode of Rogers style of the time with his Giants group – but which also really sparkles tremendously with the addition of Previn's brightly-colored piano lines! We'd honestly never thought that highly of Andre's work until hearing this set – and his presence here really adds a new dimension to the Shorty Rogers groove of the 50s – a set of tones that spring out wonderfully, and really illuminate the set! Other players include Bud Shank, Milt Bernhart, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bob Cooper – on 13 titles that include "It's Delovely", "Heat Wave", "40 Below", "Claudia", "General Cluster", "Everything I've Got", "Call For Cole", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove.)
