Jef GilsonLe Massacre Du Printemps ... LP
Futura/Souffle Continu (France), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
One of the most striking albums ever from French experimentalist Jef Gilson – and one of the most outside as well! The album's from the same vintage as some of Gilson's world jazz experiments on the Palm label, but the overall feel here is much more free – with Jef working on a fuzzy Electra Hohner piano, which sounds very stark and trippy – alongside organ from Pierre Moret and drums from Jean Claude Pourtier – as well as other instrumentation from all three members of the trio! There's lots of percussion and extra elements that come into the mix – creating an organic feel that's different than other freer jazz work of the time – and Gilson's use of the electric keyboard is strongly resonant, with bold sounds that never overlap – but hang in the air nicely amidst the percussion. Claude Jeanmarie also plays prepared piano on one track – and titles include "Les Cigales", "Faut Qu'on", "Tournant Decisif", and "Le Massacre Du Printemps". LP, Vinyl record album

Sahib Shihab & Jef GilsonSahib Shihab + Gilson Unit – La Marche Dans Le Desert ... LP
Futura/Souffle Continu (France), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An amazing meeting of two of the most revolutionary talents on the European jazz scene of the early 70s – American expat Sahib Shihab, blowing some of his most exotic reeds ever – and pianist Jef Gilson, working here on electric keys and ondioline! The album's got a sound that echoes some of Gilson's most creative world/jazz experiments – a feel that definitely lives up to the desert march of the title, and which comes across with a loose, freewheeling sound that's almost in the territory of Sun Ra or Salah Ragab! Shihab plays baritone sax and Varitone soprano, and other group members include Bruno Di Gioia on flute, balafon, and bongos; Pierre Moret on Hohner organ, percussion, and ondioline; Maurice Bouhana on flute and percussion; and Jean-Claude Pourtier on whistle and percussion. Titles include the extended "Mirage (parts 1 & 2)" – plus "Les Touches Noires" and "La Marche Dans Le Desert". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jef GilsonBest Of Jef Gilson ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing set of what certainly must be among the best French jazz of Jef Gilson – and it's also one of the best ever compilations from Jazzman – drawn from throughout Gilson's career, but with a solid focus on the fiercely creative, yet sadly overlooked 60s & 70s material! As a composer and as musician, Gilson seemingly had love and respect for the most forward-thinking and brilliant jazz players of many styles – himself adding depth and dimension to jazz and putting his own stamp on it. From tense, post-big band material with angular, kind of heavy touches to twists on waltzes, neo-operatic and choir backed movements, heavily percussive work with Lloyd Miller and beyond. We can't sum it up with a few words, but it's amazing stuff. Totally essential! Includes "Up To The Light", "Accueil", "Valse Pour Helene", "Blue-Bizz", "Agnus Dei", "Modalite Pour Mimi", "Jazz A La Quarte", "Strings For One", "Espagnolade", "Valerie's Waltz", "Chant Inca", "Hommage A Rakotozafy", a mindblowing take on Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has A Master Plan" and more. ✨✧ Jef GilsonEnfin! (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Modern Silence (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest music ever from groundbreaking French pianist Jef Gilson – and proof that right at the start, he was already in a unique space that was all his own! Gilson was a real standout in the European postwar scene – and he was one of the first in the 60s to really try to find a new voice for himself and his contemporaries – a great lineup here that works in shifting arrays on these beautifully vivid compositions by Gilson – tracks that always have a pulsating rhythmic core, but some very unusual modern solos out front! There's a mix of earthy elements and forward-thinking instrumentation that reminds us maybe of Randy Weston at his most modern – or like some of the music on the British scene to come – but given the date of these sides, Gilson may well have beat everyone to the punch. Players include Michel Portal on alto, Francois Jenneau on soprano, Jean Louis Chautemps on tenor, Ivan Jullien on trumpet, Mowgli Jospin on trombone, and Jacques Thollot on drums – and titles include "Anamorphose", "Bitonalite", "Le Grand Bidou", "Indicatif L'Autoroute 1", "Curious", "Three Four One", and "Blue Bizz". Palm UnitHommage A Jef Gilson ... LP
Super Sonic Jazz (Netherlands), 2018. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A beautiful tribute to pianist Jef Gilson – one of the hippest French jazz talents of the 60s and 70s – put together by a combo who take their name from his legendary Palm Records label! The group here are a quartet, and they work with wonderfully moody use of Hohner electric piano by Fred Escoffier, plus a bit of Farfisa and Hammond – of which are used spaciously, over rhythms that often move a lot more fiercely – with a third element created from the soulful tenor work of Lionel Martin – a saxophonist who really gets the spirit of the older Palm Records releases right! Actually, the whole group gets the spirit right – working here with a knowledge of the freer corners of jazz, but never going to that space – and instead hanging back in this spiritual blend of global currents, but all with a sensibility that's really unique. The mixture of tenor and harder electric piano lines is already great enough – but the loose rhythms at the core are what really send things home – on titles that include the Jef Gilson compositions "Mother Africa", "Chant Inca", "Chakan", "Mode De Fa", "Newport Bounce", and "Ouverture Jazz Pour San Remo" – plus a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still in the heavy stickered outer sleeve.)

✨✧ Phillip Wilson with Olu DaraEsoteric ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. Used Gatefold ... $7.99
Percussionist Phillip Wilson's got his name on the cover, but the set's a very collaborative outing with trumpeter Olu Dara – recorded in Paris by Jef Gilson with a very free-thinking, open style that bridges both American and European modes of free jazz at the time! Wilson plays both a conventional drum kit and assorted percussion instruments – although not a huge range – and Dara brings a real sense of "voice" to the proceedings, both with his phrasing on the trumpet – often in a gritty, "mouthy" mode – and his occasional vocalizations through the horn – both of which evoke the more spiritual currents of the New York scene in the 70s. There's mindblowingly creative spirit to the music throughout – that best Hat Hut sound from the first few years of the label – and titles include "Call Call The So", "Double Click", "The Chad", "Elephant Bossa", "Olu 1", and "Lester 3".
